→ Re: OCR not working with Acrobat Pro X 10.1.2

  • Acrobat 9 Pro Doesn't OCR Entire Page

I have scanned many paper invoices. I have Acrobat 9 Pro OCR them using the "Searchable Image (Exact)" setting. It does an acceptable job of recognizing most text, but there are parts of the invoices that aren't being OCR'd. See this link for a typical example. As you can see, the form has shaded areas which are the equivilent of field labels. I don't care that they don't OCR. However, the first line of characters below a shaded label is also often not OCR'd either. In the example, see "Invoice Number" in the top right corner. The invoice number ("S3436463.025") is not OCRd. That really cripples my project. There is also a lot of information in the body of the invoice which is not OCR'd.
I have several hundred pages of invoices. I need to save each invoice (typically one page) as a separate document with a name to match the invoice number. If I could OCR the invoice, then select the invoice number, ctrl-c copy to my clipboard, then File Save As using the invoice number it  would save me HOURS of work.
    1. What can I do to get Acrobat 9 Pro to OCR everything that's not shaded?
    2. If Acrobat 9 Pro can't do what I need, is there a 3rd party app which will do this that you'd recommend?

It is not being OCRd because the quality of the type is incredibly poor. It looks like it was printed either using bad thermal paper or an old dot matrix printer. You probably cannot fix things for what was already created. Sometimes we used to be able to increase the quality by xeroxing the bad printout and scanning that image, but I doubt that it will help  here.

  • Acrobat 11 Pro Freezes during OCR

I have a problem with Acrobat 11 Pro (trial version) freezing during OCR.
I am using x32 Windows 8.1 using a solid state hard drive.
While OCRing multiple documents, Acrobat will freeze around 200 pages into a document. I have OCRed a few documents, but eventually there is always a full Windows freeze.
Windows 8.1 is also frozen and there is no way to access any of the other programs on the computer.
The mouse still works though, but keyboard input does not. Each time this happened, I had to reboot with the power button. I have uninstalled and then reinstalled as well.
I have acrobat 9 Pro (full) and it works fine on a x64 Windows 8.1 machine (with a normal hard drive).
Any ideas what is going wrong?

Please share the crash dump with me, so that we can analyse the issue. You can generate the crash dump again using following steps:
    Create c:\temp\
Download and extract http://download.sysinternals.com/files/Procdump.zip into c:\temp.
Make sure no Acrobat instances are already running -- check via Task Manager.
Launch Acrobat -> Acrobat.exe should be running and there should be only 1 instance of this process.
Launch CMD prompt and type "cd c:\temp\procdump"
On the command-prompt type: "procdump -e -ma Acrobat.exe c:\temp\01.dmp". Procdump will now wait for the crash to happen.
Perform the actions in Acrobat that cause it to crash.
Once the Acrobat crashes, Procdump will create dump at c:\temp\01.dmp.

  • Windows 7 Word 2010 with EPS A4 Acrobat X Pro Paper Size Issue

I'm running into the following issue trying to create a PDF.
Word 2010 A4 page size. Document has some Illustrator EPS images used in it.
When I go to make the PDF using Acrobat from the top menu and then Create PDF, the page size of the PDF is A4, but the color is the low res bit map preview look. Not acceptable color, all colors converted to CMYK, but the EPS files have incorrect color values.
When I use File Print Acrobat PDF, the color is correct, but it reduces the pages to 8-1/2 x 11. Every setting I can find is calling for a A4 page size. This way the colors are left as the original files CMYK + Pantone colors.
I spent 2-1/2 hours with Adobe on this and they had no solution.
We have tried different Default Settings and no difference.
The Adobe PDF Page Size: is A4.
If we make the page size A3 then it generates a A3 size PDF.
When I was running XP with Word 2003 and Acrobat 9 Pro I didn't run in to this problem.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Anyone have any ideas?

  • Acrobat X Pro crashes during OCR

I am working on a project for my company imaging medical records. The client wants the files searchable, therefore, I OCR the files. I have been having problems with the OCR crashing on random images in the file. They are all scanned the same and no visable difference between other images in the file. I have to rescan the image then replace the problem page and it works fine. I had the same problem with Adobe 9 until there was an upgrade. Is there any suggestions? Thanks for your help

Can you please share a test file with us. Please mail the file at [email protected]

  • Acrobat 7.0 OCR: Unable to process the page because the Paper Capture recognition service unexpectedly terminated

    Hello,
This error occurs on some computers and but not others. I even tested it with the most basic word document, no formatting and scanned it.
It works on a few systems but others get the message:
Unable to process the page because the Paper Capture recognition service unexpectedly terminated.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Did 7.0 have issues?
    Thanks

You still didn't answer for Michael the version of 7  At one time adobe prodived and standrad version and a pro version. Standard basically done the same thing as the Print to PDF feature in the Print Menu (of the Macintosh).
Pro added features such as forms creation.
Also the exact version number can be found in the about acrobat under the Acrobat menu.
example for my version would be:

  • OCR with Acrobat 8.2.3 occassionally stops with error (5) cannot access paper capture service

After I updated to acrobat 8.2.3 (no other changes in my computer software), OCR recognition occassionally stops with an error that reports the paper capture service is not accessible/available.  This is not a fatal error because OCR can continue in the document but the page is not fully processed.  The error appears to occur after decomposing and before recognizing text.  This problem did not happen with 8.2.2.  I have two computers with 8.2.3 and this happens on both computers.  I would be happy to downgrade to 8.2.2 until Adobe fixes this problem but apparently adobe does not allow removing the 8.2.3 update.
I tried opening the .pdf directly from the Adobe open menu as someone had suggested in another forum, but the problem persists.
I use this OCR capability almost daily on large (>100 page) files so I need at least a temporary solution right away.  Any suggestions?

Not sure if this is a Flash Player problem.  You are more likely to get a reply if you post your question in the AS3 forum.

  • No Documentation for Paper Capture in Acrobat 6 Professional

Do not understand why 'paper capture' yields no results in the local or online help for Acrobat 6 professional. Never used it and would like to find documentation on its use.

Try OCR. They changed the name. Furthermore, they keep moving the selections around. For instance, Reduce File Size is no longer under the File menu (it was introduced with AA6), but has moved on with AA8 and 9 to other menus. I suspect you will be able to find OCR under a slightly different menu in Pro. It works the same way as the old Paper Capture plugin did. Be sure you tell it what kind of conversion you want and that the resolution is between 200 and 600 dpi as I recall. Colors can sometimes be an issue I think. It is also common for folks to do the OCR as part of a scan with the newer Acrobats.

  • Workaround for OCR "Unknown Error"/"Paper Capture recognition service experienced an error"

    Problem Description:
When attempting to "Recognize Text", one of the following error messages appears:
"Unknown Error." when using one of the "Searchable Image" or "Searchable Image (Exact)" settings, or
"Unable to process the page because the Paper Capture recognition service experienced an error. (6)" when using the "ClearScan" setting.
    Problem Origin:
It seems to be a compatibility issue in the PDF and not in the OCR algorithm itself, although this is speculation and not an official statement.
    Problem Workaround:
A possible solution consists of saving the afflicted PDF pages as PNG images (lossless), opening the PNGs in Acrobat, and then performing OCR. Specifically,
Page Thumbnails -> Right-click afflicted pages -> Extract Pages...
    File -> Open extracted pages
File -> Save as -> Image -> PNG
Right-click PNG files -> Convert to Adobe PDF
Tools -> Recognize Text -> In This File
    File -> Open original PDF
Page Thumbnails -> Right-click afflicted pages -> Replace Pages...
This has worked for every problem instance that I've come across, and there appears to be no quality loss. If anyone else can verify this solution, I would appreciate it.

Attempt to run Acrobat 9.5.3 OCR on MacBook Pro under Snow Leopard generates the error message:
Acrobat could not perform recognition (OCR) because:
Unable to process the page because the Paper Capture recognition service experienced and error. (17)
Ignore future errors in this document.
Login as Administrator, launch Acrobat, open one page PDF document without OCR, ..., OCR successful, close document, note additional warning message:
       Suit Product Activation Needed
Adobe Acrobat was installed as part of a suite.  To enable Adobe Acrobat, please start another component of this suite (such as Adobe Photoshop).
Switch back to user account, quit and relaunch Acrobat and OCR works fine.
Looking back at my records I see that I ran into the same error on 11/11/11 probably under Acrobat 9.4.6, but I didn't record the fix.

  • Proofread and correct OCR'd text in Acrobat 10 Pro

How do you proofread and correct text produced by OCR from a scanned document, in Acrobat 10 Pro?
I scan (many, large) paper documents, then use Recognise Text. After the OCR phase, if I save PDFs as text, I can see many scan errors.
I would like to be able to correct those errors in the scanned text, so that names etc can be successfully searched. However I cannot find any way to view and correct the scanned text.
I experimented with Tools / Content / Edit Document Text, but I cannot see how to display the scanned text to allow correction. It appears to operate on the PDF image. But if I try to change the document image to correct known errors (e.g. in spacing), and then save the PDF as text again, the string where I changed the image becomes gibberish.
How is Edit Document Text supposed to work? Is there any way to achieve what I am looking for (fixing many errors in large OCR'd documents)?
    Regards,
    Sue.

"This is a 76-page document, and the users will expect to see the image looking like the scanned original."
That locks it down. The only way to satisfy this is Searchable Image (Exact).
The scanned image serves as the an objective replacement for the source hardcopy.
The OCR output exists to facilitate search/find.
At the end of the day there is no practical means of editing OCR's Hidden Text layer with it in the PDF.
That's not to say you cannot work at it and get results. But, the operative word is practical.
In that context you may want to look over a reply I made here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/950209?tstart=0
To increase accuracy of OCR recognition:
Yes, there are dedicated OCR applications (desktop or server). Having used several of each as well as Acrobat's OCR I've learned that also significant is the scanner and the quality of the hardcopy source.
Regarding the remainder of your post above.
Ok, I cannot replicate what you describe with a PDF I've been using.
It is a scanned image of a single page of textual content.
After ClearScan I can export to Word (&, of course, have some cleanup required).
I can use the TouchUp Text / Edit Document Text tool to select all the PDF page's content (the ClearScan output).
Changed the font to TimesNewRoman, saved, and exported to Word.
The content in Word needed cleanup.
Next, I selected various words and typed in a replacement word.
After a Save I Exported to Word. The changed words carried through.
re: Q1 - What you describe is symptomatic of the Hidden text output of Searchable Image / Searchable Image (Exact) and not ClearScan. So, I'm perplexed.
re: Q2 - An advantage of ClearScan is being able to edit a text string to correct it. So, sure, why not correct? With that said, it can be a tedious and labor intensive activity. As well, typos are possible during correction which begs the question "Who bells the cat?"  8^)
re: Q3 - If corrections to the ClearScan output meets your needs an export to Word may not be needed.
However, sometimes ClearScan cannot recognize the image of a character and leaves it as a bitmapped image.
So, to correct you'd have to get into a word processor.
    re: Q4 - Goes back to Q3.

  • Clearscan OCR ERROR: Paper Capture recognition service experienced and error (6)

I get the following error when I try to run a Clearscan OCR over my PDF:
"Acrobat could not perform recognition (OCR) because:
Unable to process the page because the Paper Capture recognition service experienced an error. (6)"
The problem seems like it might be resolved with a PDF made from 300dpi scans, but I do not like the quality loss so I would rather run this on the 600dpi scans. I wish I could get more information on this "error" that the Paper Capture recognition service experienced. Any ideas?

Ok I think I might have a workaround *IF* this error is only thrown on a few offending pages.  If you have only one page, OR if it is essential that all pages then this will probably not be a workaround for you.
*FYI* this workaround also applies to the stupid "Unknown Error" that occurs in non-Clearscanned OCR.   ("Unknown Error" -- Ha, this is the type of error handling I use when I don't care about anyone using my programs, sounds like Adobe feels the same way).
Since Acrobat spits out such a stupid error, and since it doesn't work in any other scan mode (non-clearscan in any DPI) for these pages, and since there is no log file to look at for the 'paper capture recognition service' to even diagnose the problem, and since they seem completely ok with their absoutely horrible error handling here and since Adobe seems incapable of fixing this error for the last few versions and since they don't care enough to offer any help in their KB regarding an issue affecting hundreds (maybe a few thousand) of users here is a POSSIBLE workaround to clearscan your document if you get this error:
(The following instructions are for Acrobat X (you might have to click 'show and hide pannels' at the top-right of the TOOLS BOX if some of these options are not available; 9 has the same bug and workaround but where you find things are different of course)
    1) Scan your pages OR save your pdf as INDIVIDUAL PAGES (there must be a way to export your pdf into individual pages, you might need to use the batch manager (tools->action wizard on Acrobat X))
    2)  Tools->Action Wizard->Save individual files as pdf: If you don't have individual pdf pages (you have jpegs or tiff) then convert them to PDF FIRST (yes that's right, despite the seemingly obvious thought that a batch Clearscan would actually *gasp* batch Clearscan your files, it won't, it will only convert them to PDFs
    3)  Tools->Recognize Text->In Multiple Files:  Now select to clearscan all your individual files
    4) You will get an error on offending pages where Clearscan would normally give you an 'error 6' BUT this method will get around the moronic error-THEN-exit design of Clearscan and allow you to actually Clearscan most of your document
    5) Create->Combine Files into Single PDF:  Once all pages have been Clearscanned you can reassemble the individual pages to the full document
If you needed that particular page to be clearscanned, this method will not work for you.  If you just want 99% of your document to be clearscanned, then hopefully this will help.
We have to admit that Clearscan is a one-of-a-kind technology.  The OCR scientists should be given a raise for this.  The software engineers and support staff, on the other hand, should go back to the community college they flunked out of and learn a bit more about programming.

  • I have paid for Adobe Acrobat XI Pro OCR but it will not recognise a letter in the serial number for me to update my adobe account and any of the programs I have tried using to convert a PDF file on a Mac to a word doc it is converting file with funny sym

I have been supplied info in an email to copy and paste for a new product purchase "Adobe Acrobat XI Pro OCR" but am unsure how and where to copy and paste to. There is also a link below the serial number. I have tried entering serial number into my Adobe ID but it is not recognising one of the letters in the 24 Digit serial number??? Also I have tried other products previously downloaded to convert a 7 page PDF file on my Mac and convert it to a Word doc but everything I have tried is converting the file to display some text correctly but also displays random symbols and fonts in place of the handwritten info filled in on the form... also getting blank pages included instead of the info??? Would appreciate some help... I am older generation and not always tech savvy, and it is doing my head in haha.

    Hi Jock,
I've checked your account, and all is well there. Please make sure that you're logging in with the same Adobe ID/password that you used when you signed up.
Then, clear the browser cache, and try logging in directly to https://cloud.acrobat.com.
Please let us know how it goes.
