.ACSM file doesn't full download, crashes ADE 4.03 on Mac

Help, everytime I download a more restricted library book to my ADE on Mac it crashes.  I have the log.
If I download a free for the whole world to use book , such as James Joyce Ulysses, I am offered from the start an .epub version which is fine.  I can open those. Thus, the problem seems to be centered on accessing the book through the .acsm system.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled ADE 2x now.
Any I have reauthorized per my librarian and it did not help.
Why are the .ascm files not working? How can get this to work?
For any employees who are monitoring this forum, I can get you the error log.
Thank you,

  • ACSM file doesn't seem to open (Mac OS 10.5.6) in DE

I downloaded a book and the .acsm file appeared on my desktop, but when I open it using DE, nothing seems to happen. It also seems like nothing happens when I drag the acsm file into the DE window. When I close DE and open it using DE, I get a message from DE saying "One or more downloads are not finished. Do you want to resume pending tasks?" When I click "OK," there is no indication that any download is taking place. Is there a way for me to see pending downloads in DE or another way to avoid this problem and get access to my e-book? Thanks in advance for any/all help!

Here's what I did.  I had the same problem when I tried to download an e-book I purchased.  I was using the Safari web browser, and when I clicked on my download link, it would just download the .acsm file to my computer's Downloads folder, not load the book into Digital Editions.  When I double-clicked on the .acsm file and told it to "Open with Adobe Digital Editions," it wouldn't do anything, either.  The solution that worked for me was to use the Firefox web browser instead.  In Firefox, when I clicked on my download link, it brought up a window that asked if I wanted to Open the file or Save it to my computer.  I chose "Open" and then chose "Other" from the application list, navigated to Adobe Digital Editions, and finally the download began inside Digital Editions.  What a hassle, but it worked.

  • AdobeInDesignCS4ClassroominaBook.acsm file doesn't work

I just purchased and downloaded an Adobe eBook. I'm unfamiliar with the .acsm format and my computer doesn't recognize it. I tried to phone tech support but the message says that tech support is essentially unavailable for several days why some major change is taking place. I'm in the process now of calling my credit card company to put a stop on the payment.
I imagine I could spend even more time and figure this out, but frankly, I'm having such a bad customer experience that I will never buy another eBook from Adobe.
Out of curiosity, what do I have to do to be able to read the darn eBook? I have Adobe Pro (latest version) but that doesn't seem to make any difference.
    Thanks,
    Steve

Jim, thanks. I actually figured that out after googling the problem. The instructions from Adobe were incomplete, or at least unclear, in this regard, and that led to a pretty negative first impression. But all's well that ends well -- I'm reading the eBook now.

  • ADE crashes during downloading epub from acsm file

    Hi to everyone.
It's been a while that when I'm trying to download an ePub book via ADE from a acsm file, the software crashes and I can't get to read the books. I'm running on a Mac Yosemite. I tried different ebooks so it is not a problem of a single file. Does anyone had the same problem and solved it?
    Thank you,
    bye

  • ADE 4.0 crashing when opening *.acsm file on Yosemite

I recently wiped my macbook pro hard drive and did a fresh install of Yosemite.  I just installed the latest version of ADE and tried to open an ebook file (*.acsm) I checked out from my local library.  Each time I try to open the ebook file, ADE crashes.  Does anyone have advice on how to fix this problem?  I've previously downloaded these same file types from the same source, and opened them on ADE (likely a previous version, though I'm not sure) without incident. Any tips are appreciated!

    Hi,
Can you please share some details about the crash you are facing?
Does ADE4.0 crashes on all the "acsm" files you open? or some particular one only?
Did you try to open any other e-book? If no, I will suggest that you right click on the book and open it with ADE4.0 and see if it works?
It will be really helpful if you could share the crash logs with us.
You can find crashlogs in "Console" app.
In Console App, you need to click on the "User Diagnostic Reports" in the left sidebar and then there you will find report for ADE (something like "Adobe Digital Editions_<date>_<machine-name>.crash".

  • ADE crashes when opening .ACSM file on Mac OSX 10.10.2 (and other OS versions)

I'm trying to use Adobe Digital Editions 4.0.3 to access downloaded ebooks from my public library. Whenever I import the downloaded .ACSM file, ADE crashes. I reopen it, and the book is there -- when I try to open it, it crashes. I try to transfer it to my e-reader, and (surprise!) it crashes.
I've also tried using earlier editions -- exact same problem. I've tried other downloaded .ACSM books -- crashes again. Has anybody found a solution to this problem?

  • Can't add .ACSM files to ADE, message: "Error! Check activation"

I am using Adobe Digital Editions 4.0.3 with a NOOK Simple Touch, running on a 64-bit 2009 Windows 7 machine. Recently I have been unable to download my library ebooks to my Nook. The electronic library I am using (a derivative of Overdrive, I think) only allows the download of books in the .acsm format. However, recently, I am unable to open the books in ADE. Instead, the only option I have is Adobe Reader. When I select the 'Browse' option and choose ADE and hit 'OK', nothing happens and it doesn't show up as an option. When I try and manually add a file to my ADE library, I get an error message saying 'Error! Check Activation". The only thing I even got halfway working was when I downloaded ADE 1.7.2. I got the .acsm files into the library (still, I had to add them all manually through the ADE interface). However, my NOOK will not open these files, even when using ADE 1.7.2. These are the things I have tried:
-Downloading an e-book (in .acsm format) from the Digital Editions free book selections. Same issue
-downloading and redownloading Adobe Digital Editions 4.0.3 (and removing the other program)
-Downloading and redownloading Adobe Digital Editions 1.7.2 (and removing the other program)
-Deauthorizing ADE (Every time it just says "Unable to erase authorization. Please try again after some time.")
-Adding a book in ADE 1.7.2, getting ADE 4.0.3, transferring the book to the newer software, deleting 1.7.2, and syncing my nook with 4.0.3. Nook says it's not authorized
-Doing a factory reset of my NOOK
-Unblocking the .acsm files by going to Properties>General
-TRYING (and failing) to automatically associate .acsm files with Adobe Digital Editions. Like trying to open a downloaded file with ADE, I get no response when I browse and select i
(SIDE NOTE: my Adobe IDs all match. I know that is also not the issue).
I think the issue here is that something is preventing .acsm files from opening in ADE, and nothing in particular is wrong with my NOOK. My only guess (which is probably misguided) is that Windows can't process my request for ADE to be the program to open .acsm files because it's in the x86 program files folder and not the default Program files folder. I've never heard of that being a problem but I can't think of another reason.
If anyone has any ideas, please give them to me. I am actually typing all this for my grandmother, and she is going crazy without her library books.

On the deactivation issue- I just had a similar issue where I could not deactivate and had to manually deactivate by deleting the activation information from Windows registry. That might help you as well.
Follow the instructions below the disclaimer on this page: Error "E_AUTH_NOT_READY" | Digital Editions
Or if you are more computer savvy, simply close Adobe Digital Editions and then delete this registry key:

  • ACSM files cause Adobe Digital Editions to crash

So, I've been reading these forums trying to find an answer, but I haven't read about someone with the same problem. (If you know of a discussion where a solution was already posted, please link me if possible.) So, I decided to post this issue and see if anyone has some ideas about what to do.
I'm running OS 10.6.8 and the most recent Adobe Digital Editions. ADE can open/download some acsm files perfectly fine. However, for many, the application unexpectedly quits as soon as I try to open the acsm file. I know it's not the file, since I can send the file to someone else who uses the same computer and ADE version, and he can open the acsm just fine. I also know it's probably not ADE itself or my connection/firewall/etc., since I can open/download other acsm files perfectly fine. However, there seems to be a large number of acsm files that simply won't work for me and cause ADE to quit unexpectedly. Like I said, these same files work for someone else running the same version of ADE. Where should I look for the problem? These are not public library books. I do research at a graduate school, and these are ebooks that my school has paid for (the tech people there have been unable to help me). The person I sent the acsm files to test is not part of the institution, and yet he can still open the acsm files that I downloaded but can't open. So, I don't think it has to do with authorization either.
Does anyone have some trobleshooting suggestions beyond what I've just enumerated? Yes, I have uninstalled it and redownloaded it several times, along with essentially every other suggestion I've read on the forums, and still, many acsm files simply cause ADE to unexpectedly quit. If someone really wants, I can paste the entire error message that's given when it unexpectedly quits.
    Thanks for any help.

I have the 4.0.3 version and when i open the ACSM I get the "fulfilling license" window and then it crashes.  i have uninstalled, reinstalled, authorized & deauthorized ADE.  I tried to use my Overdrive account ID to authorize ADE, but when i downloaded a book, i got an error message so i deauthorized and authorized under my ADE.  i have a mac with OX SY Yosemite version 10.10.2 .

  • How can I open an acsm file in ADE?

I am trying to write instructions for someone new to e-readers. Here is the issue.
We downloaded e-books from the Ottawa Public Library. The file offered was an acsm file. We saved it to the desktop. When we opened ADE and used the "add to library" function, it only looks for epub files. We can navigate to the file in explorer and click on it, then ADE opens the file and uses it to create an epub file, which it adds to the library.
My question is: Is there any way to avoid using explorer to open the acsm file? I would have thought that ADE would allow you to point to the acsm file and open it.
    Tks

The .ascm file format is a standard that was agreed upon by the industry
some ten or more years ago, and it's used by most, if not all, of the
epublication programs that are in use now.  That includes the Overdrive
software that libraries stateside use most of the time.  If you're having
this issue with more than one library, I'd check out one other area before
I give up.  If you have Windows 7 as your operating system, some of its
security settings can prevent the library software from activating ADE on
your computer.  I'm an XP person, so I can't pinpoint which ones to look
at, but there are others reading the blog that may be able to help you.
The library's technical support people may be able to help also.
You're incorrect on expecting ADE to find the ,ascm file on your computer.
That file should exist only during the transfer, and I believe that there
are some expiration parameters inside the file, so you have only a small
window of time to use it.  Remember that this file type is only a 'pointer'
    - it's not an ebook.
Bottom line?  This issue is quite rare on the forum, and there are
literally thousands of other users who don't have this issue.  It's not the
product.  If you are indeed 'fed up' with the ADE experience, you can look
into other epublication management software: Bluefire Reader, Overdrive
(which most libraries seem to use) and Calibre would be possibilities.
    Hope this helps!

  • ADE 2.0 does not open 'older' ACSM files

I found many questions/help requests re opening ACSM files -- but none like this.
I have a number of ACSM files that are several years old and I no longer have data re where/how they were obtained.  I recently lost the 'My Digital Editions' folder but did have the ACSM files backedup.
I installed ADE 2.0 and it works fine with ebooks downloaded from Adobe.  However it will not open any of the ACSM files that I had saved.  Each gives the error:
"Unable to download. Error getting license. License server. E_ADEPT_NO_TOKEN."
Can anyone help me understand what the error means and/or how to corect the situation so I can retrieve my ebooks?

There are lots of bugs in ADE2.0.  Try replacing ADE2.0 with the older but more reliable v1.7.2.
(You can have them both installed at once if you like.)
Version 1.7.2, it is a little difficult to find, available on Adobe site for Windows and for Mac.

Make sure to authorize your 1.7.2 with the same userid you used before for V2.0

  • Adobe Digital Edition freezes after downloading a book via -acsm file

    Hello,
Three hours ago I have downloaded the Adobe Digital Edition (ADE) so that I can read a book for my studies.
I use Win7 on my netbook.
I fully authorized it, downloaded the .acsm file, unblocked it in the properties and opened it with the ADE.
A smaller window popped up saying: Fulfilling[book name] and a progress bar went up to 100%.  Then it dissapeared and the ADE froze in a fashion that it can be moved around and minimalized, but nothing else.
Eventually, after about 30min I closed it via task manager.
I've already spent three hours digging through the forums instead of studying so any help is appreciated.

I am also having this problem. Did you find a solution?

  • ADE not recognizing acsm file

I borrowed a library book, used the Library, add item to library, tabs, went to where the acsm file was downloaded right away, ADE would not allow me to click on the file, I tried again a few minutes later no luck.
I had ADE open when I borrowed the book, and was still logged into my library's website when I tried to open the acsm file.
I am running the program on a MAC os10.6.8

After looking around a bit it appears that the error #2038 is a very generic I/O problem with the files over the internet.  10 error on Local File Open is again a windows error that can mean various things but apparently in your case stops the process when it can't open or work with the local file (presumably the ACSM file) because it has a problem with connecting it to the Adobe Server 4 where it needs to get the information.
There are as many questions about this as there are possible answers but it seems to be related to either 1. Flash 2. your firewall 3. your operating system or file permissions 4. your virus software or perhaps which side of the bed you got out of this morning!   This is an example of the solutions which seem to be on a case by case basis:

    Re: Error#2038
hey a client of mine had this problem with his computer..
he bought a ebook but when he tryed to open it with ADE it gave the famous error...
so i ran the program as a admin... i authorised his account.. ( adobe-ID )
and the download started and the book opened !!!
hope this helps some of you..
    grtz Robert
My guess is that you need to find a computer that works and see if you can figure out which part of your system is keeping it from working.   Make sure you Flash is the latest version, that your operating system has all the updates and that your virus program or firewall is not blocking communication with the Adobe Server or the ADE program.   Sounds like and interesting problem but not an easy answer.

  • I can't read acsm files on my e-reader after transferring them from the pc with ADE. it seems to work, but then when I try to open the files on the e-reader it says "open failure". what's wrong?

I can't read acsm files on my e-reader after transferring them from the pc with ADE. it seems to work, but then when I try to open the files on the e-reader it says "open failure". what's wrong?

The acsm file is not the book, it is a ticket to get the book.  I sometimes get library books online, here is what I do.
    1. Start ADE on the computer
    2. Go to library website and find the book I want to download.
    3. Click on the download link
    4. In windows 7 a box opens asking whether I want to open( or run) or save the acsm file
    5. Click open/run and ADE downloads the book into the "Library"
    6. Transfer the book (epub file) to the reader.

  • Nook can't recognize ADE's */acsm file types.

Previous ADE file types */prn worked fine on my Nook. Now I'm getting */acsm files from my library via ADE. Nook doesn't recognize them. Others have posted this problem. Will ADE help us?

Make sure that "DiskImageMounter.app" is selected as the app to open all .dmg files...

  • How do i open acsm file on my windows pc? i downloaded adobe digital edition, but it says error, check valuation?

how do i open acsm file on my windows pc? i downloaded adobe digital edition, but it says error, check valuation?
    thanks in advance

I'm wondering if that is similar to the issue I've encountered before, where the file association for acsm is not to ADE but a certificate file. If you could try right clicking on the acsm and 'open with' and search for ADE and make sure 'always open with this' is check marked, that may, I repeat may, help.
If you've already done this, I don't know what to say, that's just what I've seen.
