We have configured act as in OBIEE and its woring fine for answers reports.
We have created BIP reports and using on dahsboard. But act as is not working for bip reports.

Not able to configure Act As in OBIEE 11g - The application is logging out

We are trying to configure Act As in OBIEE 11g. The list of users gets populated when I click on Act As. However, when I select any user from the list, the applications logs out. The possible reason could be that OBIEE is not able to authenticate the user (We are using table based Authentication). Please give some pointers to fix it.
Also, I am curious to understand the authentication process in case of Act As. The list that gets populated is a list of target users from the table. In our case, the username and display name gets populated. But, how does OBIEE check if that is a valid user or not?

Does Act As functionality work with BI Publisher? I am able to login and select Act As and pick a user and view all dashboards, however when I click a PDF embedded in a dashboard page from Publisher, it says Unauthorized Access: please contact the administrator. If I am logged in as myself I can view the PDF. If I am logged in as the user I acting as I can view the pdf, but if I login as myself and act as that user and try and view it, that is when the error occurs, so am wondering is Act As is incompatible with BI Pub.

Implement "Act As" in OBIEE 11g

I am trying to implement the 'Act As' in OBIEE 11g using the same xml template that I used to implement the same in OBIEE 10g.
But whenever I am providing the "Target USer" an error message pops up saying " *Invalid XML Payload: XML document must have a top level element.*"

Hi All,
after migration from 10 to 11 act is working but only sometimes.
Sometimes the authentication with the user is refused.
Is there a timeout parameter?

Issue in Configuring ACT as functionality obiee 11g

Dear Expert,
I had done the below steps in creating ACT as functionality in 11g. I am using MS SQL Server 20005 and had created table called OBIEE_PROXY.
1. Created system variable called "PROXY"
2. Created Session initialisation variable (PROXY and PROXY LEVEL) and associated the connection pool
3. Created customs templates
4. Configured the instance.xml
5. Done the setting in the Manage privileges
6. Restarted the BI services
I had taken repository rpd to offline and done the above changes .Modified RPD is uploaded through EM and restarted the services. When I login and see the ACT as there is no users appearing in the screen .
Please advise if I missed any step. Also please advise that should i need to create a user’s in the web logic console which i am trying to pass from MS SQL Server.

Limit of Act as users in OBIEE 10G

Hi ,
We have configured act as in obiee 10.1.3.4.1 and its working fine. just want to know how many users can be use in act as .
I inserted 500 rows in my act as table in DB and it goes hangs.
any suggesion pls?

Generally we see a little phase in Act As, default value is 200 and
Make sure you have not crossed the number used at tag MaxValues.
Work around is adding target user on adhoc basis.

Sorting of user list in 'ACT AS' by displayname -OBIEE 11G

Hi,
I have configured 'ACT AS' successfuly in obiee 11g . We have written the following query to populate user name and displayname in the act as drop down .
<getValues>EXECUTE PHYSICAL CONNECTION POOL DAA2.DAA2 select USERNAME, DISPLAYNAME from SIEBEL_USERS </getValues>
With this query the list is getting ssorted by USERNAME .
However, our client expects the user list to be populated in the ascending order of the DISPLAYNAME.
I tried modifying the above query as below in the xml file to implement the same .
<getValues>EXECUTE PHYSICAL CONNECTION POOL DAA2.DAA2 select USERNAME, DISPLAYNAME from SIEBEL_USERS Order by 2 desc </getValues>
But the liste is still getting sorted by USERNAME. Could anyone give some pointers to achieve this requirement ?

Thanks Veeravalli, I did exactly the same. Editing the registry didn't help so I deleted the service from registry and create it again and before that added the following in my installSVC file in the section you mentioned
set JAVA_VM=-server

But it is still not working, I am getting the same error but now it says

one of the things I didn't mention though was that when I create the service, I run the installAdmServer_Service.cmd file as "Run as Administrator", only then the service gets installed. Can this be related to the fact that this windows service needs to be run under admin account? or Run as Administrator? I am guessing because I tried various heap sizes and also edited my setDomainEnv.cmd and commEnv.cmd file to use 1024 as heap size it but still didn't work and it is failing may be while loading the class? If that is the case then how to run this services as administrator? Am I missing anything else?

OBIEE 10g Act-As Proxy Error

Hi,
I have configured the “act-as” proxy function in OBIEE 10.1.3.4.1 and from the drop down list I am ok to act-as for some users but for some the following error appears (and I am logged out of Answers):
Unable to Log In
Odbc driver returned an error (SQLDriverConnectW).
Error Details
Error Codes: OPR4ONWY:U9IM8TAC
State: 08004. Code: 10018. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: 08004]
[nQSError: 10018] Access for the requested connection is refused.
[nQSError: 13023] An external user ‘A33369′ can not run as an internal user ‘K2824′. (08004)
Any ideas why this error comes for some users and what I need to do to mitigate?
I have checked the proxy users table in the DW and there is a row for A33369 and K2824.

OBIEE 11g: Physical Layer acting as level of abstraction against ddl change

Does anyone know of a way to insulate the RPD physical layer from DDL changes on the database. So, for instance a column name changes. Currently we use physical views (PVs) to provide a layer of abstraction but want to see if there is another solution. If the database team changes the name of a column, we want it to be seemless and not require changes within the RPD. There is the physical update in the utility box but this is manual so would not be a solution unless it could be automated. Any ideas on how to handle would be appreciated.

I don't think so there is any utility which captures the column name changes as such.
However you can do these things if your modelling comprises of views or Mviews.
You can ask your DBA to change the actual table column names but not Mviews or Views name.
In your view query you always use alias for each of the column in that way you can retain view columns even if base table column changes.
How ever you should change your view as and when your column name changes..

Completly At a Loss with Act As Functionality

I have:
1: An Instance of OBIEE installed on our server, Single Sign On implemented with EBS 12.1 and everthing is running well. I have been following many post about adding the Act As functionality but I have had no luck, cannot even get the 'Act As' link to appear in the Answers Screen. All the config is done, Custommessage folder, Instance Config, Rpd, etc etc
2. I have on my laptop the same version of OBI. No config, unaltered rpd. This is stand alone, working on the Bi Server. When I log in here however I get the Act As link appear with the exception that it says "This Functionality has not been enabled by your Administrator"" NO Custommessage File, no config to the Instanceconfig file and no tables in the rpd!!!!!!!!!!! I can understand the message as Yes it is not set up, but to still display with no Custommessage file, Im at a complete loss.
Was this functionality integrated into the latest version of OBI??
And how to get it to work against an EBS instance.

Allbeit I doubt you'll see a profile reset, but even better you may see a lasting resolution, hopefully.

Error bringing up /analytics in OBIEE 11g

I recently installed OBIEE 11g on Solaris.
After the installation was completed, I can log into WebLogic Console and Enterprise Manager. I could not open up the <host>:9704/analytics page. All of the services required to start up were started.
After reviewing the error messages on EM, I noticed the following error messages.
Error reading object: /shared/Sample Lite/KPIs/Unit Price
Error reading object: /shared/Sample Lite/KPIs/Sample KPI
Error reading object: /shared/Sample Lite/KPIs/Revenue KPI

Specifically note : Oracle BI Scheduler Server runs Delivers jobs for users without accessing or storing their passwords. Using a process called impersonation, Oracle BI Scheduler uses one user name and password with Oracle Business Intelligence administrative privileges that can act on behalf of other users. Oracle BI Scheduler initiates an Agent by logging on to Oracle BI Presentation Services with the Oracle Business Intelligence administrative name and password.
For Delivers to work, all database authentication must be performed in only one connection pool, and that connection pool can only be selected in an initialization block for the USER system session variable. This is typically called the Authentication Initialization Block. When impersonation is used, this initialization block is skipped. All other initialization blocks must use connection pools that do not use database authentication.

OBIEE 11g Agent Includes Action Link Report Name
I have a dashboard page with multiple reports. One of the reports has Action Links to drill to another report. When I view the dashboard as a web page, the report with the Action Links look fine. The link fields are colored blue. When I send this dashboard page as an HTML email, it shows the Action Link report name in the cell with the other data.
The dashboard page sent out as an agent should look the same as the web page and the Action Link report name should not be visible.
Any ideas?

So you spoofed the values of the 2nd column to have the report act almost like a menu listing?
if that's the case then check the data type of column 2, it should be set to HTML. Then you will just need to build your HTML tag within the column formula.
Example below bins the year name into a Link HTML Tag:

OBIEE 11g - 100% width

Hi all,
In OBIEE 10g it was possible to use the very neat 100% width on e.g. tables/pivots, but in OBIEE 11g it seems like this function is not working anymore. Which is very bad for the graphical user interface. It just looks a lot better when the tables are filling up the screen when using the 100% width option. (Which you set in the Formatting area of the table/pivot).
Is his something Oracle has "forgot" to bring further from 10g to 11g or am I missing out something here??
Another thing which also is really annoying is that it's not possible to open the log (the SQL Query log!!) in a new window. I use this a lot when building the BI Server, to make sure the BI server is acting as I want. Any workarounds here?

I'm getting the Invalid Number Format when the Indent (Left Padding) on the Style is populated with something like 10px. When a left padding value is set, I cannot set a numeric format for this column.
If I remove the 10px left padding, go back to the Data Format tab, set a format and click OK, it keeps the new format as well as the 10px that I removed. But you have to remove the 10px every time you want to change the data format.
1. Open Column Properties
2. Kill the 10px
3. Change the data format
4. Click OK. The 10px padding is still observed in the results, and is still present if you come back in to Column Properties.
To change the data format again, I have to repeat all 4 steps.
I just tested all six fields in the Additional Formatting Options section. They all cause this same behavior. So the problem isn't the use of 100% in the width field. The problem is the use of any value in any field in the Additional Formatting Options section. Bug. I've reported it.

How does one access custom function in OBIEE RPD for Session Init Block SQL

Hello:
We are using SSO for authentication and authorization for OBIEE, using Init Blocks in the RPD and httpHeader as the source of variables in the Instanceconfig.xml file. (As long as the user is member of one group, the results are fine. However, as soon as the user is assigned to multiple groups, group values become URI-encoded.)
To solve the problem of URI-encoding, we have deployed a function to the DB (ora 10gr2).
The problem I am running into is that when I call the function from an Init Block (Security), OBIEE Presentation Services (OPS) acts as though the function does not exist or is not called.
Initialization String: select group_OBIEE(WEBGROUPS) from dual
("group_OBIEE" is the function that was deployed.)
Testing: Successfully tested the function in PL/SQL as well as using the Test button in RPD.
Reason for the fuction: The function decodes the extra characters using a substr function. SSO uses Shibboleth for Authentication and Authorization.
For example, for our group name, we expect to obtain the following value:
edw:hrdir;edw:findir (2 groups separated by a semi-colon)
However, we are obtaining the following: (Determined via the narrative view in Answers: @{biServer.variables['NQ_SESSION.GROUP']} )
URI-ENCODED<edw%3ahrdir%3bedw%3bfindir>
Please note: There are no such problems when we are passing only a single group value (i.e. edw:hrdir). So, in cases when we pass only for Group for the user, we are able to authenticate and authorize w/o a problem.
Any suggestion on how to call the function or a better way to approach this problem?

You don't need a function to assign the groups in your Init Block. In fact you should not use it. You need to use a standard select and define the Init Block as Row-Wise. This means the BI Server knows the Init Block will return more than one row. You select statement should look like this:
SELECT 'GROUP', YOUR_GROUP_NAME FROM YOUR GROUP_USERS_TABLE WHERE YOUR_USER_ID_COLUMN = ':USER'

OBIEE 11G Calculation the Correct Way

My requirement is like this that I want to calculate value Gross Profit which is simple Total Revenue - Total Expense. Now I want this to act as a Hierarchy i.e Gross Profit should be drill able to Total Revenue followed by Total Expenses. For this I created a Accounts Dimension table since no Drill Down facility is available on Fact Table(Therefore I had to move my Accounts to Dimension table rather than Fact Table). Now the problem is that there is no minus based aggregation present in OBIEE BMM layer because of which my all other sum based aggregation work correctly except where there is a negative based aggregation required like in the case of Gross Profit. Kindly Suggest what is the correct way to approach this problem. I am working on OBIEE 11g in this case.

Financial reporting is difficult in BI because of the user preference of how to see signs on different accounts and requirements for adding/subtracting depending on the type of account.
A few ways to approach:
a. Use case statement to make total rev and total expense columns. Subtract to build a gross profit column. You can do this in the presentation services front end or the BMM.
b. If you have opposite natural signs for rev and exp, you can create an account hierarchy in the account table which will net out to gross profit. Ex:
Column 1 – account number
Column 2 – hierarchy level 1, ex Gross Profit
Column 3 – hierarchy level 2, ex Rev or exp
Column 4 – account name
Etc…
c. Remember you can always build your own drilldown using navigation links to a report instead of the built-in drilldown.
