Not absolutely sure what you mean, but if you've had an email asking for account details it's a phishing scam.

  • Keep your root clean...you need 45 meg free!

Just was on the Project Manager of Fremantle Applications Framework blog and he states that the next update will require at least 45 meg free on rootfs...start cleaning....if you don't know what rootfs is or how to check availability install conky.

    2. Reinstall python
This one gives you around 20Mb.   If you did NSU update and reinstalled all apps you do not need to do this.
If you installed a python application (for example FM Radio, Quicknote, Witter, Hermes,gPodder, MAstory) before python was optified, you need to reinstall python.
there is a 'geek' way to do it or the easy way.
Easy way... Make sure you have WiFi Access for your N900 on a network that has been set up.
    1) Do a backup...include applications
    2) Do the NSU update
    3) Immediately after update do a restore of your backup.
    4) system will ask you to reinstall all apps.

  • Keep your phone secure!

The virus and worm threat has reached the mobile world, and like on your computer there are a few things you can do to prevent an attack:
How can malware get on my phone?
Via SMS, as an internet link
Via Email, as an attachment or a link
Via Bluetooth, as a file or a internet link.
Via MMS, as file or an internet link that you click.
As an application you download from somewhere and think it is something completely different (so-called Trojan horse). This, of course is the most insidious way, because since you think it is an application that you want to install and run, you´ll do it without having a clue that you are infecting your phone!
None of the methods above infect your phone immediately! They require you to open a link and save and execute a file.
What can I do to decrease the danger of being infected?
As a general rule, try to be more suspicious of links to open (even if you know the sender!), and be wary when installing applications. Make sure the source is reliable. In system security circles, people shouldn't ask themselves "Am I being paranoid?", they should ask themselves "Am I being paranoid enough?"
Within the Application Manager you can select whether Symbian software that has no verified digital signature can be installed or not. It is recommended that only software with a verified digital signature be installed.
Of course these Guidelines don´t ensure 100% immunity against any kind of malware, but they´ll go a long way towards keeping your phone safe.
If you have any questions regarding this, feel free to ask them within the board!
Thanks to user grschinon for his collaboration.

I haven't used anything for my iPhone - I just throw it into my front right pants pocket. It has been used for three weeks and doesn't have any nicks or scratches or anything else. What's the point of having a nice thin iPhone and then shoving it into a case twice it's size? I've been using smartphones for years and have never used cases for any of them, and none of them have ever become damaged, scratched, or had any other problems. Of course, your usage may very.
As to the screen protectors, Apple does indeed have them. They don't seem to be on the website, but you can call their shop, or stop at any of their retail stores. They have a very strong static cling for the front glass portion and you get two for 14.99.
Ironically, when our new Apple Store Briarwood opened here in Ann Arbor yesterday, I spent a lot of time there sharing iPhone stories with the geniuses that work there -- and NONE of us uses cases, although several of them used the cling screen protectors.

  • Keeping my BT Yahoo Premium Mail Account, I am hav...

I cancelled my BT Broadband Option 3 subscription around Nov 20th 2011 and I discovered on the internet that my BT Yahoo Premium mail would be terminated 90 days after my BT Broadband was cancelled, I've had my bt email account for around 10 years so I don't want to lose it.
I've been running around in circles trying to get the £1.54 monthly charge setup so that I can keep my exisiting BT Yahoo email account all have lead to a dead end .. could you please help me .....
Here are some problems listed below that I've encountered:-
    1) I navigate to the following BT website link where it advertises to 'keep my email' account for bt yahoo premium for £1.54 / month, I enter my email account and it states "there is a problem with the status of your account" and doesn't allow me to progress further with the upgrade. Here is the link...
    http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayTopic.do?topicId=26508&s_cid=con_FURL_...
I still have a bt.com/btyaoo account and a BT landline and I can setill see broadband being billed for Nov 2011 so I don't understand why it will not allow me to upgrade here on the link above.
    2) I was advised by BT operatives to go to the following alternative BT web page to upgrade to BT Yahoo premium mail and most of you will be more familiar with this one... however it only allows the user to generate a NEW BT Yahoo email address NOT KEEP your EXISTING email address despite the link advertising that you can keep it..... after entering my bank account details and I enter my btopenworld email account the web page stops with an error stating that my BT Yahoo email adress is 'already taken': here is the link, also there is a link from my http://home.bt.yahoo.com/  'my account' page to the very same link stated below... the link is named 'Upgrade To Premium Mail' which is very deceptive as it is not an upgrade of your exisiting email account its an entirely new email address that it allows you to create only and this is no good. Here is the link .. with the premium link right at the bottom...
    https://register.btinternet.com/cgi-bin/registernow?version=ie5&ex=1&product_type=PMR
    3) I was advised by a BT operator to contact the BT Yaho premium mail team on the phone (I have a BT phone landline btw) and I called 0808 100 6778 Option 2 (email) Option (1 Change email) on a Sunday at 11am and all I got was the following message then the line cut off, the team should have been there as the message stated but the help service team was not available which is perplexing .. here is the message is this service dead ?
"Welcome to BT our advisors are available from 9am to 9pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 6:30pm Saturday to Sunday"
     Not true...
I remember calling the yahoo premium email team around the 20th Nov 2011 (about a month ago) and they told me that I would receive an email warning me that my BT Yahoo email account would be cancelled in 90 days with an option to upgrade to premium... this email has not been received (I even checked bt yahoo spam folder) hence why I am getting worried about not being able to renew my BT Yahoo Email Account.
    4) I called up other BT Broadband and technical numbers but they can detect from my BT landline that I no longer have BT Broadband so those numbers are not availale to me for help.
In summary it seems that you do have a service to upgrade to BT Yahoo Premium Email for BT users who have left BT Broadband but it is EXTREMELY difficualy to obtain to customers who are willing to pay for this service. Can anyone out there please help me. If I lose the email account it is a very serious matter to me as I have had it around 10+ years.

I'm moving from BT Broadband. I'm wanting to keep the email address and have found that going here...
    http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/12682/~/what's-the-difference-between-bt-yahoo!-premi...
and then clicking on www.bt.com/premiummail gets you:
Sorry, this page is currently unavailable
The tip (as stated above) about phoning the number above worked well.
I was told by the support person there is a 90 day grace period after the end of the BT Broadband and an email will come through on about day 86. The guy on the phone said ring the same number again then to upgrade to subscribe to the service.
If there is a department in BT that looks at things that don't work on their website it might be worth fixing this.

  • What is the best way to keep your macbook pro in tip top condition. performance wise

What is the best way to keep the performance of a macbook pro in tip top shape.  Over the years my computer seems to act like a pc with all of its hicups and lockups.
I am running mountain lion and this computer is approx 2 years old.
Not sure if there is some sort of software that will help with this or is there something else I can do.
    Thanks

    How to maintain a Mac
    1. Make redundant backups, keeping at least one off site at all times. One backup is not enough. Don’t back up your backups; all should be made directly from the original data. Don’t rely completely on any single backup method, such as Time Machine. If you get an indication that a backup has failed, don't ignore it.
    2. Keep your software up to date. In the App Store or Software Update preference pane (depending on the OS version), you can configure automatic notifications of updates to OS X and other Mac App Store products. Some third-party applications from other sources have a similar feature, if you don’t mind letting them phone home. Otherwise you have to check yourself on a regular basis.
Keeping up to date is especially important for complex software that modifies the operating system, such as device drivers. Before installing any Apple update, you must check that all such modifications that you use are compatible. Incompatibility with third-party software is by far the most common cause of trouble with system updates.
    3. Don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” "boosters," “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, such stuff is useless or worse than useless. Above all, avoid any software that purports to change the look and feel of the user interface.
It's not much of an exaggeration to say that the whole "utility" software industry for the Mac is a fraud on consumers. The most extreme examples are the "CleanMyMac" and “MacKeeper” scams, but there are many others.
As a rule, the only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for, and doesn't change the way other software works.
Safari extensions, and perhaps the equivalent for other web browsers, are a partial exception to the above rule. Most are safe, and they're easy to get rid of if they don't work. Some may cause the browser to crash or otherwise malfunction.  Some are malicious. Use with caution, and install only well-known extensions from relatively trustworthy sources, such as the Safari Extensions Gallery.
Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it. Otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve. Do not rely on "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.
    4. Don't install bad, conflicting, or unnecessary fonts. Whenever you install new fonts, use the validation feature of the built-in Font Book application to make sure the fonts aren't defective and don't conflict with each other or with others that you already have. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. Deactivate or remove fonts that you don't really need to speed up application launching.
    5. Avoid malware. Malware is malicious software that circulates on the Internet. This kind of attack on OS X was once so rare that it was hardly a concern, but malware is now increasingly common, and increasingly dangerous.
There is some built-in protection against downloading malware, but you can’t rely on it — the attackers are always at least one day ahead of the defense. You can’t rely on third-party protection either. What you can rely on is common-sense awareness — not paranoia, which only makes you more vulnerable.
Never install software from an untrustworthy or unknown source. If in doubt, do some research. Any website that prompts you to install a “codec” or “plugin” that comes from the same site, or an unknown site, is untrustworthy. Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must come directly from the developer's website. No intermediary is acceptable, and don’t trust links unless you know how to parse them. Any file that is automatically downloaded from the web, without your having requested it, should go straight into the Trash. A web page that tells you that your computer has a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with it, is a scam.
In OS X 10.7.5 or later, downloaded applications and Installer packages that have not been digitally signed by a developer registered with Apple are blocked from loading by default. The block can be overridden, but think carefully before you do so.
Because of recurring security issues in Java, it’s best to disable it in your web browsers, if it’s installed. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This action is mandatory if you’re running any version of OS X older than 10.6.8 with the latest Java update. Note: Java has nothing to do with JavaScript, despite the similar names. Don't install Java unless you're sure you need it. Most people don't.
    6. Don't fill up your boot volume. A common mistake is adding more and more large files to your home folder until you start to get warnings that you're out of space, which may be followed in short order by a boot failure. This is more prone to happen on the newer Macs that come with an internal SSD instead of the traditional hard drive. The drive can be very nearly full before you become aware of the problem.
While it's not true that you should or must keep any particular percentage of space free, you should monitor your storage use and make sure you're not in immediate danger of using it up. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of free space on the startup volume for normal operation.
If storage space is running low, use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the most space. Move seldom-used large files to secondary storage.
    7. Relax, don’t do it. Besides the above, no routine maintenance is necessary or beneficial for the vast majority of users; specifically not “cleaning caches,” “zapping the PRAM,” "resetting the SMC," “rebuilding the directory,” "defragmenting the drive," “running periodic scripts,” “dumping logs,” "deleting temp files," “scanning for viruses,” "purging memory," "checking for bad blocks," "testing the hardware," or “repairing permissions.” Such measures are either completely pointless or are useful only for solving problems, not for prevention.
To use a Mac effectively, you have to free yourself from the Windows mindset that every computer needs regular downtime maintenance such as "defragging" and "registry cleaning." Those concepts do not apply to the Mac platform. A computing device is not something you should have to think about very much. It should be an almost transparent medium through which you communicate, work, and play. If you want a machine that is always whining for your attention like a neurotic dog, use a PC.
The very height of futility is running an expensive third-party application called “Disk Warrior” when nothing is wrong, or even when something is wrong and you have backups, which you must have. Disk Warrior is a data-salvage tool, not a maintenance tool, and you will never need it if your backups are adequate. Don’t waste money on it or anything like it.

  • Keeping Your Verizon Email Address

I was just told by a Verizon support that the resedential
"Keep your Verizon.net email address — even if you switch providers" option (for an annual fee) was discontinued a few weeks ago.  I'm extremely disappointed with them.  Has anyone else heard this?  Thanks.

I signed up for this service a few years ago to keep my email addresses when I moved out of a FIOS area. Everything worked well until recently when I recieved an email stating that they needed to charge me for the service and were going to mail me a bill. The problem is that the address that they are going to try and send the bill to was the address that I had when I lived in a FIOS area. So now after several emails to support and numerous calls taking up atleast 8 hours over the last month ending in one today that I sat there for almost 2 hours. I was finally transfered to another switchboard that proptly told me to call the number I started with then hung up.
So frustrated with Verizon at this time. Is there anyone whithin the company that can help resolve the issue of simply being able to pay for this service so I am no longer under a threat of having it canceled?

  • Firefox keeps reverting to yahoo, even when I select google

Even If i delete it, yahoo keeps resetting as default

    Hi farrbar,
    Sorry you are having problems.
What is it you are deleting ?
Which search is the problem ?
For instance, location bar, homepage or the bar on a new tab.
You are able to select temporarily to use an an alternative search engine. You are also able to select from the search engines available and set one as the default. Whatever you choose as the default search engine for the search bar is normally used for all other Firefox searches.
    * see [[Search bar - add, change and manage search engines on Firefox]]
** Have you tried changing the default search engine used by the search bar ?
** Did that work for the searchbar?
** Does that stay changed after a restart of Firefox ?
** Does it also change other searches such as the locationbar ?
By default the search engine for most locales | languages was Google. Now that has changed and for instance on English-USA it will be Yahoo, unless you choose otherwise.
If you are unable to choose and permanently change the Search Engine it may indicate you have: some odd addon or toolbar; adware, or malware on your computer.
If you continue to have problems a screenshot of the problem search type may help

I clicked on iMessage on my Macbook Pro today for the first time, and now NOTES keeps opening up every 5 seconds, with a new note.  I cannot stop it from opening. If I close it or force close, it opens again in 5 seconds.  I can't get rid of it.  I have tried to clear out the iMessage settings I had put in, and I've tried to adjust the Accounts to not include notes to synch.  But, Notes will not stop.  It opens a new note, and even if you ignore it, it assumes preference every 5 seconds, and the Mac is impossible to use.

Do you have any Boot Camp or other secondary partitions set up on your system? If so then try running a disk verification routine (chkdsk, etc.) in Windows to repair the disk. While I've not heard of it happening recently, in the past errors in these partitions have resulted in stubborn ghost files appearing in OS X.

I downloaded the latest update on my MacBook Pro last week. Now I keep getting a pop-up that iCloud wants my password from an email login I haven't had in a year. I can't find where to delete that email login.  iCloud is also showing my new email login, plus a bogus one I accidentally created trying to fix this problem. Now the calendar on my MacBook Pro won't sync with my iPhone5.

It sounds like you have the Find my iphone Activation lock for sure. Go to www.icloud.com/find and see if you put in that Apple ID that is coming up and yoru password to see if you are able to sign into the account that way to turn it off. If you are unable to, you will have to contact AppleCare by phone (chat cannot handle account lock outs or forgotten password due to not being able to verify your identity) and see if they can reset it. And are you sure the Apple ID that is coming up yours?

I recently got the new iPhone 5c I used icloud to back everything up from my 4s to my new 5c.  Now, I keep getting a pop up that says Continue Restoring?  (This iPhone has not been backed uprecently because it has not finished being restored. Would you like to finish downloading any remaining purchases and media before backing up, or delete them along with any app date?)
I seleted to finish downloading because I didn't want to lose anything.  It still will not finish downloading and I have tried this several times.
What do I need to do to that I can get my iphone to back up and so that I can install the new iOS?

    Hello there, Brandifoote24.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up an explanation of what you're error signifies:
    iCloud: Understanding Backup alert messages
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4576
"This iPhone has not been backed up recently because it has not finished being restored. Would you like to finish downloading any remaining purchases and media before backing up, or delete them along with any app data?"
This message is displayed if your iOS device has been trying to complete a restore for more than three days. This can occur if your restore has been interrupted due to network connectivity issues or some other problem occurs.
Being that this is the case, you would want to go back to the article it seems you were referred to us from and try to restore from your icloud backup again:
iCloud: Troubleshooting restoring an iCloud backup
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4036
How do I restore an iCloud backup if my device is already set up for use?
You'll need to erase all data and settings from your device, so first confirm that you have an iCloud backup to restore:
Go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage, then tap the name of your device to view a list of iCloud backups.
Check the date of the backup you want to restore, because you'll be restoring only what iCloud backed up on that date.
After confirming that an iCloud backup is available, follow these steps:
Connect your device to a power source and make sure that it is connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi.
Follow the instructions for restoring your iOS device from an iCloud backup, which include making sure that your device is using the latest version of iOS.
If the issue persists, then I would troubleshoot Wi-Fi using the following article:
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1398
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

You have now exceeded your iCloud storage, including an additional amount provided to allow you to continue receiving email. As a result, you will not be able to send or receive new email messages with your iCloud email address until you free up storage space or buy more storage. I have 20GB remaining.  WHat is the issue here?

Today I received the same message but have 4.6gb available from a total of 5.0gb. I also received the same message when i first set up my icloud account and icloud was virtually empty. Unfortunately the only way i can see to contact apple is to pay for a telephone call. If anyone knows what is going on i would appreciate knowing.

  • How To Keep Your iPhone Safe At The Gym

I have a problem with the Otterbox Defender (or more like a worry).
Here is my  worry.  I like to use my iPhone at the gym.  I also have an iPod touch.   I have used the iPod touch at the gym, with no problems (it has a very  thin rubber protector).
I prefer the iPhone because my gym lacks  wi-fi, so I can't get pandora.  Here is the problem.  The Otterbox is  not too bulky, but more bulky than the iPod touch.
So when I do a couple of exercises, with the iPhone in my pocket, I get nervous.
For  instance, say I do a dumbell exercise (curls), well the DB comes close  to contact with the front/side of my leg where the iPhone is in the  pocket.
If I do a dumbell bench, same problem, you begin with the DB in your lap, right next to the phone.
The biggest is when I do deadlift, because again the bar almost grazes the front/side of my shorts where the iPhone resides.
Now  so far, no problems, but this makes me very concerned.  I am worried  that I am either going to knick, hit, or drop a DB on my lap with the  iPhone in my pocket getting touched, or the deadlift barbell will hit  it.
So I have a few questions......
    1)  Am I being a worry busybody or is this really playing with fire?
    2)   What do you all do when you workout in the gym (lifting weights, cardio  is no problem, very safe).  Do you keep your iPhone in your pocket or  do you have/recommend an armband?
Most people I see in the gym have  it in their pocket, a few use bands...so that makes me thing perhaps am I  just worrying, but I dunno.
    3) Do you recommend an armband, or  is the ottorbox going to protect it just fine if I hastly hit the phone  in my pocket with a barbell or dumbell?
    4) Or if I had the Griffen defender, would I be all set even if I drop a 60 DB on myself!
***Note to mods, I decided to make a separate thread for this topic, instead of putting it in the "protection" or "gym call disable" one because this is a larger question, and a very important one.
I felt if I put in one of the prior ones, already a few pages into it, this would be missed, and for people using the phone at the gym who want protection, indeed this is a larger, different topic.

Duct tape it to your head.
If you are paranoid that you will smash it with a dumbbell, then get an armband.
