Act of GOD - - - And how AWESOME is Hewlett Packard?

Ok. I have been a Proud TouchSmart IQ816 owner since the end of October. Since they came out. I love everything about it. Especially their Customer Service. Something happened that Tested me. Normally when something Bad happens? I go Nuts. Well, how about this?
I turn on my Touchsmart day before yesterday. It seems to be taking longer to boot. After a few minutes of seeing the Blue HP Logo screen I realized something was wrong. I reboot. The machine will not go past the HP Logo screen. Devastating because I can not go into the Bios, I can't even put in my recovery disk!
It freezes before any of those options happen! The Anger starts.
I call HP and before my anger gets out of control? A representitive tells me not to worry.
I explain that I can't even get to the Bios. Nor the Recovery option.
Frozen on the HP Start Screen? She agrees that there aren't many options. Just one in fact.
Send it in. Warranty Repair. Anger grows inside. It was running Perfect!
Then she says, "I will get a shipping box to you right away, send it in, you will have it back within Two Weeks"
Believe it or not, my anger fades...I tell her that, "Wow! Two Weeks isn't bad, we monitor our children's medication online with Children's Hospital and thought it would be 6 to 8 weeks..."
She was VERY nice, saying that it could be even sooner, and knowing about the kids, and the medical issues she would see what she could do...
Well, let me tell you about HP and their service. I already got the box today, packed it, called FedEX to see when they could pick it up? LESS than 15 minutes later it was on it's way.
I could tell by her tone, she was interested in helping me, and it showed. Already on it's way.
This was the 1st PC that I could do nothing about. Scary. Froze up before disk input even.
Acts of God as they are called can go many ways, and different directions pop up, but HP's Customer care put me at ease, the pickup process was painless, and to know I will be happy again with my toy within two weeks made things all the better.
I hope her estimate was right, I will keep the board posted.
Thanks to HP for helping me maintain control in this awful time.

As I previously posted - Here is my update from HP...
FedEx Tracks I will have my IQ816 back on the 2nd of March.
That is DAYS before their estimate. I am very happy.

    It started randomly about two weeks ago and I thought it was a glitch that would just go away. But now I am getting sick of using only the block eraser on one size. Help?

    The easiest thing to start with is to reset the Eraser Tool.
    Right click on the Eraser icon in the tool options bar and then click on Reset Tool.

    looks like the gtk theme is not the problem. didnt really think it was, but the documentation was worth posting. the guys over at ubuntu look as though they have dealt with this in great detail, and have produced a few solutions, which may or may not work. i have decided to post these for anyone else who may have these problems.

    judging by a google search on this problem and the number of responses that came up, the bonobo/daemon error is quite a common curse for the users of gnome, although much more common in distros such as ubuntu or fedora.
    i hope that this proves useful and if anyone has anything to add, please feel free. the more documentation the better.

    another solution would be to remove gnome and reinstall it from scratch. (some please tell me if i am doing this correctly. thanks )
    1. clean your catch:
    pacman -Scc
    2. remove gnome, gnome extras, and whatever other gnome files you might have installed
    pacman -Rscn gnome gnome-extra etc...
    3. reinstall gnome and gnome extras
    pacman -Sy gnome gnome-extra
    4. reconfigure your desktop the way you want.

  • What is the difference between Wine, Wineskin, Winery and Wine Bottler, and how do I get Wine to *ACTUALLY* work in Mountain Lion?

    Ok, so this is my first post here and I am admittedly terrible at forums. Someone might say, "This was addressed in the ___________ thread by __________! Go read it!" --- that may be so but I've spent enough hours trying to google this problem into submission to no avail based on what is apparently working for others, so I would like a chance to get specific answers to specific questions that aren't from Mar 2011, etc.
    So first of all, I'm confused by all the various Wine programs/apps/whatevers. I've seen Wine, Wineskin, Winery, Wine Bottler, and at this point I wouldn't be surprised if there are even more than that. What's the difference between all of these and how do they work with one another? What do I actually need to get windows programs working?
    All of my google searches have led me to people giving out fish, but no one giving out fishing lessons. I'm not a pro at mac and windows and all that, but I'm a fairly bright individual who gets VERY frustrated, very quickly, when I don't understand the why and how of something I'm attempting.
    I've also found "answers" where the person attempting to help starts off helpful enough, but degrades into the most archaic of techno-babble after about 5-6 sentences. On the other hand, I've watched tutorials on youtube where the poster decides to skip (apparently crucial) sections of the tutorial, and mutters such gems as: "... you might wanna have to run Wine first before you can do anything, cuz I think it has to configure it and set up a bunch of stuff" 
    O.o
    A happy medium between techno-babble and the most basic of explanations would be ideal for me, and I'd imagine for others as well.
    Here is a summarized history of my relationship with Wine:
    Diablo II - I downloaded this awesome thing which ended up being... uh... I guess Diablo II in a Wineskin "wrapper". I'm not sure, all I know is that it's a D2 icon, and if I go to 'show package contents', it's got C drive, Program Files, et cetera inside of it. I double click it, it launches D2, and it works like a dream. <3
    'Vanilla Install' - That's what I heard someone call it. It was the command/terminal style install using xquartz and xcode found at http://www.davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/. I followed every instruction to the letter, and got all the way to '$ sudo port install wine', at which point it started going smoothly, free from the possible error he described regarding the installation of xcode, and then just failed after I left the room to use the restroom and came back. Please don't ask me to repeat what the error was, because honestly, after reading more things on the interwebs, I'm confused as to why it's even necessary to go through all of that, so I'd rather not try that route again anyways, rendering the error message quite possibly irrelevant.
    Wine + Wine Bottler - So I decided to try to seek out an easier method, as I know that one must exist that doesn't involve command lines. I found a video tutorial at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0BBkISOcEA, and oh man would it be great if that method had actually worked. Again, I followed all instructions provided to procure my free fish, and at the point in the video where he declares that "xquarts or x11 will open" - it doesn't open. Nothing opens. I was trying to install Star Sonata, btw.
    So here I am, thoroughly worn out, frustrated at all the random places Wine is installed on my mac now, and just want someone to explain it all, from top down, without getting toooooooo technical on me. I know that might be asking a lot...

    ## I know that the poster has already found a solution, but the following is a possible answer for others that have similar issues.
    For Winebottler, just go to their website and download it. Run the program. Choose .wine as your prefix (best choice) or whatever suits you best. You'll need a functional X11. If you can't use the one that comes with your mac, download the latest one from the website.
    If your issue is one with Winebottler's Wine not running correctly due to X11, then you have a pretty ugly problem, although a simple upgrade is the best solution (Upgrade XQuartz.app).

    The above website is the easiest way to get REAL wine on your computer. First of all, Wineskin WInery, etc. are NOT WINE. They are 3rd party apps that may use Wine or may have originally part of Wine, but they are no longer up to date with Wine. WineBottler is currently up to date with the stable releases of Wine (but not the maintenence releases).
    For the website tutorial and to run Wine on your mac without using a thrid party app, you will need to know a few things.
    First, you will need to know basic control of the command line. That means, sudo (you must know the administrator password to your computer), and the forms of cd (change directory).
    Second, you will need Xcode. Download 4.2 (stable) or whatever other versions you want, but beware: It is over 1 GB, and you will need time for it to work.
    Third, you will need to get MacPorts and configure it. The tutorial should have this data.
    When you download wine (use sudo port install wine-devel for the latest development release of wine), it will first download a lot of dependencies. This will take a while. After that, it will download wine itself.
    After obtaining wine, to run a program, open the terminal.app window.
    cd desktop/XYZ/ZYZ\ WRQ
    The above will first enter the desktop, then folder XYZ, then folder ZYZ WRQ. From here,
    wine th11e.exe
    Or whatever executable you are trying to open. (Using Subterranean Animism as my example).
    It should, in theory, run the program. Watch the terminal for errors. If there is an X11 problem, then it's not wine acting up. If the app crashes or has other issues, check the Wine Application Database to see if your app is compatible with wine.
    If you have any further questions or other things, feel free to reply; I may or may not get back to you, but there's a good chance that someone will come in eventually. Otherwise, the Wine Wiki should have some information.

    As I stated above, "I have to pay for something that was not my fault, nor Verizon's fault, but is an act of God/nature.  Why is that?"  I had a hard time keeping my phone charged at one time, so I called/visited my local retailer of Verizon, and they ordered me a new battery (first step after cleaning my phone. Not like it was dirty anyways). Got a new battery, put it in, still same problem.  Would not charge...boo! So, I bring it back, and they order me a replacement phone, since it "is still under warranty, and insured".  When I first brought my phone in, the young lady said, "That is why it is not charging; it was the charger port, that is why it was not charging. It is as loose as a goose" So, that is why she ordered me a new one. 
         So, get the new phone, put "new battery" back in.  All is good, all of what, 2 maybe 3 weeks later.  Now it is doing the same thing again. Checked the charging port, it is fine.  Bring it in, to the store, and questioned the young man behind the desk, and find out why I was charged the $299.95(+taxes & s/h). He said, "it was because the old phone was because there was "corrosion" around the port."  Of course, there was not a single note of it being loose.  He continued, and said it was because it was there had to be a time where you spilled something on it, even if it was a drop of any kind of liquid. Or, you/ or someone else, had it in the shower with them."  (Really, a drop of liquid, or taking the phone with me in the shower?)  How I could I get a "drop" of liquid in it, if I had an Otter-box on it, or why would I take it in the shower with me?  I admit, I am not the sharpest tool in the shed, but, really? Come on now!
         Since, I have to now pay for it, I am kind ‘a wondering if anyone else has, or had the same problem with their phone (s).  My wife has the same phone and she has not had this same problem.  Makes me wonder.  Since, my phone is doing this again, if it is something that I am doing wrong with it or not.  So, now they have ordered me a new battery, and we will see if this will be a new fix, or "good bye to Verizon."  Any comments, or suggestions, please email wife and me, and let me know.   • Import problems and how to handle a bad crash

    I am working on a system that I "inherited" because I am the only person left who has any idea about how it is supposed to work. :(
    Configuration:
    Oracle Base Version: 9.2.0.1.0 & OUI patch 2.2.0.2.20 & Oracle Patch 9.2.0.3.0
    Operating System: Windows 2000 Server
    Situation:
    The SCSI controller on the mainboard failed taking the primary hard drive drive with it and damaging the HDD controller for the secondary drive. Thankfully I was able to bring the secondary drive back up online and get to the mirror which I immediately copied to a backup location. Unfortunately getting the mirror drive to be bootable under server2K has not been successful so I am focusing on recovering the data at this point.
    Problem #1:
    Incredibly Rare backups of the database have been made and I have the backup files but one of the backup files (the most recent one) is corrupted. During import via the DBCA interface I get a "invalid EXT descriptor signature" message when it is unpacking the files. From my own research, this appears to be a screwup on the part of SUN and how they implemented some things via Java.
    Request #1:
    Does anybody know how to fix this import issue with the backup files? (It will get me almost 2 years worth of data... remember.... Incredibly Rare backups...)
    Problem #2:
    There is still about 10 months worth of data that is sitting in the database from the last corrupted backup. I have a copy of the entire C:\Oracle directory from the mirror drive so the raw data is available to me.
    Request #2:
    Is there a way to import or merge this data with a working backup file (from 2005)? I'm under the assumption that 'overlay and pray' is not an option :)
    General Information:
    The original Oracle server is part of a small domain that was setup to perform a dedicated task. I am currently performing the recovery efforts on a dedicated server setup at home which models the software configuration of the original server that died. I can import a backup file from 2005 without any issues and the OraDim & sqlnet files don't report any errors. I have no trouble accessing or manipulating the data via the Enterprise Management Console or SQL+.
    Please forgive me if some of this is posted to the wrong section.

    I call it a toy because infrequent backups, inadequate training, and an antique unpatched database clearly indicate that your management has not taken this seriously.
    It is time for someone to act like a professional and that appears to mean you.
    Forget this forum, open an SR at metalink, and follow Oracle's support advice.
    If your management has not paid for a support contract ... either they purchase one in the next 48 hours or ... update your resume and get out of there while you still have the skills to do so.

  • How has someone HACKED my iPhone 5c? and how do I stop it?

    I upgraded to an iPhone 5c Monday with AT&amp;T. The first night I got it I was downloading the usual apps and setting my phone up using my Apple ID and iCloud. I downloaded a new app called Tips, by Trusper. Not saying that is the cause but that is the app that I was in when this started. It started flashing like it got a virus and the next thing I know something took control over my phone. It went into my Facebook and shared my friends. Went into my iTunes to see if I was plugged into a computer, went into my settings looking at thing. The whole time I was freaking out cause I wasn't doing this! I instantly deleted all the apps I downloaded. It's like a remote person was fighting with me for me not to go into my setting and hit the reset phone. That didn't work, even when I powered off and back on it started again. I would try to go into an app or mail and it would back me out of it and go into the calculator or my settings or Facebook. It then went into my iPhone search and typed Pepe... And then went into my maps and was trying to locate something. I instantly thought oh crap what if they are trying to find my location and so I immediately tried to shut the phone off which it tried to get me not to by swiping my swipe back. Finally it powered off and I left it off all night. The next day I called AT&amp;T and spoke with them, they sent me to apple operator. They are completely clueless on how it happened and how to fix it. We tried all the normal things. I changed all my logins all my passwords. Reset the entire phone from scratch. Later that night, I thought all was fixed and while on my phone again, all by itself,it went into my email, looked at 2 of my emails, went into my Facebook messenger, looked at one of my conversations and hit the thumbs up like button and send. So now it's taunting me. It started again about an hour later. Now today while I'm using it, it went into another message and hit a laughing emoticon to a friend. Then tried going into my other apps again. WTH is happening? No matter what I've done, nothing is working. So now the plan is to go exchange the phone and start a new id and life on my phone. Anyone had this happen or have any clue? And no I'm not seeing things or on medication, my husband and kids watched if to. I'm trying to catch it happening and get video of it.

    Again if you want to help do so here. Drawing posters to email conversations is against the TOS of this forum.
    Anyway:
    Currently there is no way to remotely hack an iPhone. If it was doing strange things it may have been a glitch or bug in the iPhone.
    Have you tried restarting the phone?  Hold down the Home and sleep/power buttons  until the Apple logo shows up.
    If its still acting up a replacement would be in order.

    I'll get it worked into my main script. Is this Action Manager code, and not just regular Javascript from the Scripting Dictionary? I can't tell the difference. I'll see whether or not it's actually faster than Applescript.

  • Can Time Capsule be used as a time machine on a Windows Server.  Is this possible, and how do i configure this?

    I like to use the new TC in my office as a time machine on a Windows Server.  Is this possible, and how do i configure this?
    In fact my plan is to make the first back up by connecting to the server via an ethernet cable, but thereafter i like to bring the TC to my home and perform the incremental backups over the internet.  This is for safety reasons, in case for example the office is broken into, or flooded, or fire (god forbid).
    I sincerely hope it is possible, and not complicated.
    Alternatively i would not mind replacing our current Windows server 2003 with an Apple server, but all computers in the network (except mine) are Windows 7 or 8. Would it work?

    I will consider the WD My Cloud device.
    It is a NAS.. it is designed to provide a cheap centralised file storage.

    A file server like windows uses heaps of power to do very little.. in your setup.. In most setups like SBS it will do exchange server and provide a heap of useful connectivity to your clients.
    Since you are not using the windows server in anything but simple file serving you can replace with a NAS..
    Problem with the TC is, it is a router with a hard disk inside.. designed specifically for Time Machine.. it fails to provide what a NAS does.. easy access to any clients, local or remote.. TC is designed by apple for apple and the rest of world is not really invited to the party.
    It provides no backup.. no data protection.. and is so specifically apple orientated I do not think it works at all well with windows.
    For a simple example.. windows will have file issues with large files.. because it is only NTserver FAT32 to windows.. bad luck if you have large files.. !!
    Plainly if you use active directory in windows that facility is gone.
    I just like Apple products, find them more stable than Windows and easier to use.  Plus i can access the server from home if it is an Apple Server.
    If you only need remote access for yourself that is fine.. too bad for the windows clients I guess.
    Or you open it up to the world and bad luck for security.
    Apple do not design for mixed environment.. in fact with the TC there is no provision for windows access officially at all.. so anything you do is a fudge.
    You can use the TC for your Mac backups within the network.. that is fine. Apple provide no software at all to help with your windows clients.

    Great information, if you don't mind I just wanted to piggy back off of your post, to clear any potential confusion.
    The 20 free incoming & 20 free outgoing faxes are with HP printer's that include the eFax service print app.  As of now, we have three printer series' that include the pre-installed eFax print app: HP Photosmart 7510 Series, HP Envy 110 Series, and the HP Photosmart eStation C510a.  
    eFax also has a free plan which allows you to receive a limited number of faxes but does not allow you to send any faxes. If you exceed the number of received faxes allowed, eFax will prompt you to upgrade to a paying account. Here are the main details of the free plan:
    One remote (i.e. non-local) eFax number
    Area code/prefix is selected by eFax and cannot be changed (unless you upgrade to a paid account)
    20 incoming fax pages per month (receive-only)
    You are prompted to upgrade to a paying account if you exceed 20 incoming pages, or if you need send capability.

    First, that statement - and those materials - refer to the "legacy" StreamInsight query/adapter model. They do not refer to how things work with the Reactive model introduced in version 2.1. Specifically, it talks about Dynamic Query Composition (DQC).
    You cannot use a deployed Observable in another instance of StreamInsight. You may be able to use them across applications in the same instance - off the top of my head, I'm not sure. I'm getting ready to get on a plane but will take a look at it later.
    Typically, however, applications act as containers (comparable to .NET AppDomains) so I don't think that you'd be able to do this easily. That said, the code and assemblies
    can be reused across multiple instances/applications. You would have separate instances of the classes involved but you would be able to reuse the query logic. That's a common use case.
    Can you be more specific about your use case and what you are trying to accomplish here? It's possible that there are alternative ways to do what you are trying to do.

    I'm in a downward spiral and need advice about if booting off of an external hard disc is the right thing to do and how to go about it. How I got into this mess I'll write below. My immediate problem is that I want to be able to install a copy of osx 10.5 from the original disks that came with my computer onto a usb hard drive. Then I want to boot from that drive and install software such as disk warrior on the same external hard drive in order to repair and recover the files on my internal hard disk. Not sure if this is easy to do with the install disk that came boxed with my macbook. So is what I want to do feasible and how do I do it? Thanks.
    How did I get into this mess?
    For those with time to read more. A downward spiral (and my macbook was working fine)::
    I have been backing up my work documents onto a 20 GB pendrive waiting to get the money to buy an nas to work with time machine for the two macbooks we have at home as a place to backup photos and video. I bought a network drive but it wouldn't work with my macbook; my time machine backup freezing at 3 gb, but works fine with wife's macbook pro.
    I tried to do TM backup on a usb hard disk and got the same problem. Support forums indicated that hard disk problems could confuse TM, so although I was experiencing problem free computing I ran disk utility from internal  osx. This indicated an <invalid node structure - file system verify or repair failed> at the checking catalog file stage. So I followed instructions to run disk utility and repair from the installation disk. When I ran disk utility from installation disk I get exactly the same <invalid node structure - file system verify or repair failed>. It gets worse.
    After failing with install disk utility, I could not then boot from my hard disk (I had had trouble free computing up to my attempts to use TM) or eject the disk. At first attempt I had no option but to boot from dvd again as hd not offered as an option. Second attempt hd option available but fails. By reading advice given to others I managed to eject the dvd and have tried:
    safe boot - it won't
    boot in verbose mode and single user (indicates I have disk0s2:I/O error) and won't boot
    try to use disk utility from install disk to create disk image on external hd, it won't (cites i/o error)
    If I can boot from an external I will try to repair with Disk Warrior as forums indicate that this software has been able to solve <invalid node structure> issues (but am open to recommendations of other products). I also hope that I may be able to try again to burn a disk image sucessfully if this repair works. I'm still trying to save my photos and videos that aren't backed up.
    I  plan to try an archive and install installation but first I want to  try a repair with disk warrior as I fear that archive and install won't work and I'll end up having to erase and repair my hard disk.
    I feel like some perverse god is punishing me for trying to do the right thing and back up my hard disk.

    85 GB of a 150GB hard disk needs backing up (saving)

    I am not sure about this, but my memory is that if you try to partition the drive (in OS 10.5.8) it will erase the data.
    But you can try. Go through the Add a partition steps, but watch for any warnings. If my memory is correct there will be a message to the effect that everything will be erased.     With respect to DW on an external, I do that. I have a 80 GB external - I call it Emergency - with an OS, DW and TechTool Pro on it. (Since I have is a recovery partition built in with all new OS, Emergency would be of use only if I need to run DW or TTP.)  I have never yet had to use it, but it's there. It is not usually connected - I just did that for this screen shot.
