Action Dance Shot

I have a Canon SLR 70D and Tamron SP AF70-200mm F/2.8 - trying to take fast action dance shots
What settings would you put your camera on. Photos in a gym and unable to use flash. Dance is hip hop, lyrical and pom routines so a lot of movement.
picture is just not very crisp - will post a 2nd photo on another board
Used FStop f2.8, exposure time 1/1600 sec, ISO 3200, focal length 42 mm, exposure bias -1.3 step

I shoot light challenges subjects all the time. I am the "Arts Photographer" for our local school district.
My equipment of choice is my 1D Mk IV with my 24-70mm f2.8 L and my 70-200mm f2.8 L.
Most of the advice is good, not all of it but most, especially Tim Campbell. I will add and tell you how I do it.
First set you camera back to factory default. Do not use a EC, set it to zero. This will only confuse you. Do not use Auto ISO either. How is the 70D at ISO 1600? That is where I set my 1D Mk IV and it is very good there.
I always shoot RAW and never in jpg. This change alone will gain you a ton of adjustment ability you don't have if you are using jpg. You will need post software but this is the very best way to shoot. You have a fine camera and a top of the mark lens so why put blinders on them by shooting jpg?
Next choose your spot carefully. Where you are makes a big difference in your success. Sometimes high on the bleachers is best and sometimes on the floor is best.
You do need to find a SS that will stop action. I find 1/250 will do a good job on most movements by dancers even football palyers. Not always so you need to be aware as this may need to go up to 1/500. I doubt you will ever need 1/1000 or higher.
You can use Tv set to 1/250 and give it a try. You don't need the dancers to do this. Go early and do some tests. Possibly there is a sibling that can stand in for you!
I hope some of the tips we have given you help. But I can not stress how much and important shooting RAW is. With todays cameras and software there is no reason to use jpg. And also, maybe the most important is preparation for the shoot. Go early, choose your placement and test exposures.
The camera and lens you have will get you good shots, if you do your part. Let me know how it goes.

SSAS report action to pass multi-value list of dimention key values to a SSRS report parameter

I want to create a report action in an SSAS OLAP cube that generates a list of formatted values to pass into an SSRS report parameter that accepts a multi-valued parameter list. This would be applied at the
cell level in the SSAS action. I have found a solution that gets me most of the way:

if I run the action from a cell that is at or below the dimension attribute I am generating the list for, in this case,
Account Key.

Account Key level or below. I want to be able to run it at higher levels, such as
Account Major and still have it generate all then related Account Key values for the SSRS report parameter. Running it at the higher
Account Major level does not trigger the report to run.

I was unable to get the suggested answer with the "Exists" function to work. To better demonstrate this issue, I have recreated it using the Adventure Works Cube.
I will focus on the Customer dimension, specifically the Customer and
Education attributes. I created a report action called Test Report Action. Below is the XML created for it in the cube.

Below are the steps to re-create the issue.
Connect to the cube in Excel
Add dimension Customer -> More Fields -> Customer
Add measure Internet Sales -> Internet Sales Amount
Right-click Internet Sales Amount cell, select "Additional Actions" -> "Test Report Action" and see customer values created for URL
When the action is ran at this point with Customer, I see the values created in the URL shown message box (since there is no SSRS report server at location specified).
Now the part I'm unable to resolve
Remove the Customer dimension and add Customer -> Demographic -> Education
Right-click Internet Sales Amount cell, select "Additional Actions" -> "Test Report Action"
Nothing happens. If I ran the action on the cell next to "Bachelors", I would want it to build up all the list of all the "Customers" that make up the "Bachelors" in the
Customer dimension as part of the report parameter. If no attributes where used in the cube from the
Customer dimension for that cell, then I would like it to return "All Customers", or something similar to show that all customers are included in the aggregations.
I am not too MDX savvy, thus far. I think I need to somehow join the
Customers to Internet Sales Amount in the Generate function portion. I have tried several different combinations of the
Customer dimension and Internet Sales Amount, along with various functions to see if I could get this to work with no success. I am hoping that someone more knowledgeable the me will have a solution. If you need more details,
please ask and I will provide them.

Thanks for you help with this. This morning I found a workaround. Below describes what that is.
What I ended up doing was getting a list of values from a degenerate dimension that I could use to pass to SSRS to get a list of transactions for a report. Below is how I did this, in relation to the Adventure Works cube using the degenerate dimension

The way I was going about it before was flawed, as I was trying to get a list of the granular values from each dimension used to build the measure value and pass each one of those as separate parameters. I just needed to set something unique for each fact
measure transaction that represents the value and uses that in a query parameter for the SSRS report.

Not able to create a new action

I am using Photoshop CS5 Extended Version - Student and Teacher Edition. I am not able to create a new action. When I open up the actions menu, the new action option is greyed out.
Also, there is no "new action" icon at the bottom of my action screen like I've seen in tutorials showing how to create a new action (screen shot from a tutorial).
How can I get these buttons so I am able to create a new action. I've already uninstalled photoshop and reinstalled it but have gotten the same screen menus for actions. I've also reset the photoshop essentials settings menu but that did not help either. What do I need to do next?

Has anybody found a fix to Facebook video calling in Mavericks, or am I being a moron over the whole issue?

I'm having, and have for a while now, since installing Mavericks had a issue with using video calling for Mavericks. Even though the video icon for video calling is availible in safari, Firefox etc the java app will not download and install. I know there were issues with this initially but have they been resolved? It is doing my proverbial head in, I've searched forums looked at my library playlists etc etc etc, but a fix has evaded me. please please please please somebody give asome sort of affirmitive answer one way or another as to: 1. can it be fixed or 2. will it be fixed!!!!!!!!!

I've just sussed an action .... after I wrote out my own question, I started thinking about it in a different way, the 300 dpi secondary issue was just a niggle after all .... I was coming back to close this question as solved .... I went back to the initial re-size / action logic

Due to an Illness, I have not been able to work on my projects

Had to pack my iMac away for several months until my condition improved. It has improved slightly now trying to work on some simple projects.
I shot some footage on Sony digital. I have used footage and edited footage from past projects. Looks like I need the basics FB editing. I shot video and was going capture.
This first error I get is, Unable to locate the following external devices:

The warning message is nothing to worry about. FCE knows you currently do not have a DV camera connected.
Apple FireWire NTSC (720x408) This is the default FCE Easy Setup. It can be changed anytime to match whatever type of footage is to be captured.

Stop Motion Animation Capture

Is there a option to capture one frame at a time thru Final Cut Pro 5.0 to do stop motion animation? My camera is attached via firewire. Adobe Premiere has a stop motion button that captures one frame at a time.

All DSLRs give you wide choice of image sizes and compressions.
The advantages of shooting with an SLR far outweigh the perceived limitations but they require thoroughly understanding your animation project's needs. The documentation on Tim Burton's "Corpse Bride" and many other stop-action films shot with still cameras is extensive. It's great fun to research. You'll spend hours on google looking for various stop-action proejcts. Lots of these animators are artists or students, gladly sharing their techniques on their sites or blogs. if you find one you like, post it.
There are cults of animators who shoot with still cameras and bring the frames into After Effects for processing with time remapping, frame blending and many other effects. Incredible stuff. Try google for Patrick Siemer, a visual effects artist at Pixar. He is featured in the new AE7 CIB from Adobe.

After Effects color keying

Hi,
I have a problem which I can't seem to find a solution for, and I'm not convinced that there is one either.
Basically I have a dancer shot in front of a green screen. The dancer is wearing clothes that are bright, different contrasting colors. The reason for this is that I want to select the clothing and change the colors of the various parts.
In the green screen shoot we flattened the lighting to minimise shadowing to make it easier to pick out the color. What that has done is effectively washed out the vibrancy a little bit.
In after effects the dancer has black make up around her eyes and mouth and a purple top. In the video the black make up seems to have picked up some purple for reasons I don't know (compression? reflection?) and so I have purple pixels on her face as well as on her top.
Is there a way to separate the purple pixels in the face from those on the clothes? Bearing in mind this will be a 3-4 minute video and not a still image.
I hope someone out there can help me

d.sprowls is pointing you in the right direction. For some more detail, here are two videos that I made that show a couple of different ways to isolate and apply an effect to only a person's face:

As you can see, instead I am now left with Forced Line Breaks in place of the of the Paragraph Ends (except the last colour name). Also, the paragraph break between styles in the main box has been lost, which messes up the styles.
Do you think there is a way around all this?

I just went from a T3i to a 70D. I seem to have trouble with action shots in low light situations, any suggestions on setting...

... and didn't upgrade your lens inventory? Although the 70D will be better in most cases compared to a Rebel T3i, it is the lens. It is always the lens.

G15 action shot

I have recently purchased a G15 after several year of using G7. I am surprise to find a very limited scene modes on my G15. I'm I missing something or have I make a mistake. I do a lot of outdoor shooting at different landscape, views and action shots which the G7 made very simple. Have I made a mistake with G15?

I'd guess that Canon decided that buyers would be photographers rather than picture takers. As such they'd know what setting do the best job in every situation. The G7 used a mode dial to access programmed settings for each of the things you've named such as scene mode, sport mode, night etc. As such there was a built in set of settings that used the meter reading to decide what ISO, shutter speed & aperture MIGHT give you a good photo. For those who've taken the time to learn the basic rules of photography doing the same or a better job on determining which settings to use is relatively simple, & they'll just set the camera up to get the shot & if it's off a bit they'll reset & shoot again.
Fortunately it's easy to see results thanks to digital cameras & LCD's so now that you've spent the money take a bit of time to learn the basics & practice them learning & advancing as you go. For action you use the Tv mode (to set the Time Value or Shutter Speed). You need to pick a shutter speed setting that's high enough to freeze the action, but unlike the built in program of the G7 you pick a more perfectly matched shutter speed. For Landscapes you usually use Av mode (aperture value) & learn what different settings do.
No matter which camera you buy it's going to use the same combination of things to produce good photos, and that combination matches the ISO, the shutter speed & correct aperture to do it. No magic, just the rules that control an exposure, and more advanced cameras allow the user the control over those things.

Action shot is part of the new Smart Camera application that is included with the 925 but will be made available for other Lumia WP 8 devices later this summer.

I have a Rebel T3i zoom for action shots??

I received this camera last year for Christmas. I wanted it to take action shots of my son playing soccer and my daughter horseback riding. It has the lense it came with and I'm wondering if I need to upgrade my lense to get great pictures. I can't seem to zoom in when it's set to action mode is that normal? I'm VERY new to photography. I've read through the users manual but not getting anywhere fast. If it's the lense then which lense would be sufficient for what I would like to do?

We can't tell you much without knowing what lens you've been using but if you want to shoot day time sports there are a few zooms which can do a good to great job but night sports is a very different thing. Be prepared to dig deep if you're really serious but if you can live with good vs great image quality (No matter which way you go there is a learning curve so allow some time to perfect your technique). On the lower end I'd recommend researching the Tamron 70-300 VC & Canon 70-300 IS. A better lens but also shorter reach wise is the Canon 70-200 f4 L or better yet (& more $) is the 70-200 f4 L IS and even more expensive are the 70-300 L IS & 100-400 L IS but it may be a bit long at the wide end for the soccer.

Can't use all annotate actions in Preview-it's a PDF of a web screen shot. No highlight, underline, etc; can insert text, boxes, notes.

I can't use all the annotate actions in Preview. It's web screen shot saved as a PDF. No highlight, underline, or strikethough text but I can insert text, boxes, notes. On other forums this problem was solved by saving as a PDF which I have done. Any other solutions?

I don't think PDF is the way to do it, but if it was you'd need something like Adobe Acrobat Professional.

As far as Text changes, I thing the actual Source would maybe be the way to go, but you could always turn the PDF into a jpg or such, then use a Graphics program to poit out things...
