Action to eliminate "save as a copy"

Question

I have for some time used an action in CS5 which flattens the image I have open, saves it as a jpeg, and closes the file.  When working on files created using Nikon nef files which have been opened as a jpeg (8 bit RGB) the action inserts the word "copy" into the file name.  As the files have already been flattened and are otherwise unremarkable, I am unable to determine how to prevent the insertino of the word "copy".
When the steps recorded in the action are executed individualy (outside the action) this does not occur.  The check box for "save as a copy" is never checked when executing the steps outside the action and is always inserted in the action when I create it.  Any thoughts?

Why flatten the image? A File - Save As - JPEG will do that for you.

Quite right.  Sloppy terminology on my part.  The file was opened in Adobe Camera Raw as an 8 bit RGB.  Selecting the ACR button labeled "Open Image" naturally opens the file in Adobe's own format for editing, as it does all files.  Selecting "Save" displays a drop down box in which the original file name followed by "copy" followed by "jpeg" already populates the field.  ie,"filename copy .jpg".  The same sequece of steps exicuted individually does not insert the word copy.

No.-, but it is composed of 4 layers.  Thus the "Flatten image" command.
Photoshop expects you to work on a "Master Document", saved in a format which can carry all the editing info (i.e., whatever layers, channels, etc. you have created). While working on that Master Document, Save As allows you to save copies as other, lesser formats, such as JPEGs. If your image actually contains NOTHING that can't be saved in the JPEG format (no extra channels, no layers), then the JPEG format can be the master document save format.
At that point I wouldn't expect the word "copy" to appear, but I don't do what you're doing with an action.
Neither would I, which is what generated my question.  "Save as copy" box is checked by default.
Exactly how are you storing the Save As step so that it doesn't prompt you for the filename when you're saving?
Not "Save As" but "Save".  The entire action says nothing but Flatten image, save, and close.
Or are you saying the default filename it puts up has Copy in it?

Perhaps if you make a copy of your action, move the copy to a separate set, save the set as a temporary .atn file, and post the file here we could look at it and possibly make some suggestions. I'll certainly be willing to see if the problem is reproducible on my system.
Thanx, but as this process works just fine if the original file is a jpeg rather than a nef, I suspect that what I wish to do is not possible. The file must be first saved as a jpeg in order for this action to run as I had expected.
