Actions and Magic Move transition

In several slides, I have added a SCALE action and a MOVE action to objects in the slide. I then add Magic Move transition between slides, which works great, until the object pops back down to it's original slide instead of staying at the scaled size. Is there a way to make my SCALE action stick once the transition/move is complete?

Why have you added a magic move transition, what are you trying to achieve, that the actions in slide 1, do not do?

  • Actions and Magic Move bug?

Symptom: When making a transition on one particular slide the "static" slide appears for a moment before making a successful transition.
Description: I have a slide on which there are several text boxes that appear and then move to different locations on the slide. One text box is used as the magic move link, this text box has no actions attached to it.
When the "static" slide is viewed in keynote the result is very confused with text boxes overlaid on each other - as expected.
When I play the slide transition in the slide show mode the first slide completes all its moves and then fleetingly displays the "static" version of the slide before successfully completing the transition.
Any suggestions as to what might be the cause of this behavior?
    Thanks

  • Stuttering magic move transition, has anyone the same problem?

I use Keynote 6 on a brand new macbook pro with retina screen (the most havy one). Has anyone the same problem: a little stuttering of the magic move transitions. It looks like if the movements are carried out on a rough surface. It is a small effect but it gives a low quality appearence.

Thanks for the feedback,Gary. Of course this may be the case, but it doesn't explain why a brand new MacBook Pro does a worse job than a over 3 years old MacBook Air (although the MBP is set at 1680x1050 and the MBA is at 1440x900 default resolution).
I tend to do all transitions at high speed, max. 0.5-0.75 seconds for a transition, often less (0.1-0.4 seconds) for an object build, to get a 'cinematic' effect, as Apple calls it.

  • Magic Move and Charts

I was watching the video of todays WWDC keynote and at one point Phil Schiller was showing a graph that smoothly changed vertical size and scale when transitioning between one slide and another. He then said (I am paraphrasing) "Magic Move in Keynote".
I went right to my Keynote '09 and have spent the last 45 minutes trying to get Keynote to do such a smooth Magic Move transition. Started with a scatter chart. Generated on a page, copied and pasted in the next and just shrunk the vertical size. No smooth transition. I removed the legend from both. Same no go. Tried it with 4 other chart types and in none did Magic Move smoothly transition a chart from one page into another where the size was changed.
Has anyone else done this? Look at the WWDC video - it happens with Phil's first part of the presentation showing numbers of OsX users. Can anyone duplicate this with a chart???

I think so. There is no other way. As I said it's not perfect. Magic Move makes the animation dependent from the objects being at front and at back. To make it perfect, you need to care about that. As this would REALLY take time I didn't do so. But I think Apple does have employees for that
You can do the diagram with keynote, then remove all gridlines etc. copy it and paste it into Photoshop as a Vector smart object. Then save it as a .psd file and put it back into keynote....

  • Assigning Magic Move to Specific Objects

I'm creating a presentation where multiple, identical items need to be placed at different positions on screen. The first object moves from the center of the screen to it's place, but for subsequent slides, instead of moving the newly-placed center item, it moves the first item to the second position. How do I assign specific objects to use during magic move transitions?

Thanks for your reply. I'm finding that doing things slowly, and methodically produces the best results, but there are a few actions that I'm unable to pinpoint the cause. I've uploaded part of the file here: http://bit.ly/1aMWQz
Slides 7, 8 & 9: The bottom row of coins rearranges between transitions.
Slide 9 & 10: The caption "6 Ways" uses the anagram transition which is intended only for the title.
Slides 11 & 12: The captions "6 Ways" and "15 Ways" disappear briefly. The same occurs in subsequent frames.
    How do I remedy this?
    Thanks.

  • Another "Magic Move" question...

    *Hi there!*
I'm trying Keynote 09 and all goes fine, except for this *"Magic Move"* thing.
I can actually "move" one object through both slides, but can't go further than that; if I try to scale it, rotate or everything else that's not just repositioning on x and y axis, all I get is a darkened (and often cropped) image which moves towards the final position and suddenly gets replaced by the modified one at the end of the transition.
Since I'm on an old hardware and running Tiger, I was wondering if there was some sort of hw limitation for the Magic Move transition +(although the ones for which I know hw limitations do exist are regularly grayed out in their menu and MM is the only one that gives me problems)+.
I've tried every suggestion I came across in this forum and over the net, but still had no luck +(even thou' I couldn't find anyone else experiencing the same problem)+.
I've already re-installed the iWorks demo...
    Any hint?
    TIA!
    ale

    Hi, Pesto1.
Yep, I know... MM is pretty young and Keynote itself is not so much older, after all (and still is WAY better than PPT).
I must say I'm pretty satisfied with all its feature, even if - me too - I can see all of their potentials and often find myself thinking about improvements more as a +"*Keynote Pro*"+ application build, rather than some actual improvement on Keynote itself
There are probably too many... people coming from Graphics/DTP have their own, people coming from Flash have others and so do people coming from video-editing.
(I still didn't get why did Apple cut out QT's capability of reading .swf files, to say one).
On the other side, if we're using Keynote is because we need something editable by our clients (if it wasn't for that, I think I'd rather go for a Flash presentation); and clients - or intermediate users in general - are pretty rarely skilled enough to deal with _too many_ choices.
I think Apple's trying to keep Keynote as simple as it can, yet powerful.
And, indeed, it IS pretty much simpler than PPT, yet way more powerful.
    *Back to the "MM" thing...*
I know it has some limitation, but - on my side - it's not working *at all*.
It does move objects, but if I resize (no crop, no template text, no group) or just rotate them, it doesn't work anymore.
+And by "doesn't work" I mean it randomly crops images/objects, moves them and then suddenly pops them up in their final position; no fading as when "it does nothing".+
I managed to get a file in which I've seen (on another Mac) MM working as it should, and I experienced the very same issues (on my G4).
The only thing I can think about at this point is the G4 Graphic Card that is pretty obsolete, and probably MM is one of those "GPU stresser" effects. What makes me doubt about it is that Apple didn't mention it in the iWorks specs.
And the fact that I couldn't find any other similar complaint on the whole Internet.
+(I've been googling around so much for this I think this month Google's gonna send me a bill)!!+ :/
Or maybe is just the fact that no one uses G4s anymore?
It sounds logical and unacceptable at the same time.
No one here "magic moving" anything on a G4?
I'd love to hear some clear words about it, so that I can decide whether to stop looking around or try to improve my search skills.
As for your issues, maybe there could be some workaround...
    1. If you have to crop your image, probably making a placeholder IN which you resize the image and the placeholder itself through MM, could work.
    +(I can't try this myself 'cause... well, I wouldn't be here if I could)+ :/
    2. I think it's fair you can't move template objects in general +(I also come from DTP, where "Masters pages" and their elements *must not* be editable, unless you badly want to)+. But I think if you just select the text boxes you want to move, making a command-X ("cut") and command-V should "unchain" them from the master slide and make them become brand new objects.
+EDIT: just tried it and it does work (at least just moving it), even directly on template text boxes. Am I missing something?+
    3. Groups are evolving... Keynote is not enough skilled on groups, yet.
(I wish I could group many object with different actions/builds applied without losing them forever). Sorry... I have no hint on this.
As for the slide not accepting different timing that's not a (direct) bug of Keynote, but is the way Keynote imports files from PPT.
Dunno if it's Keynote to blame or PPT, but somehow I tend to bet on the last one.
That is a HUGE problem, 'cause I often have to convert PPT presentations made by clients and all of the effects and transitions are stuck in PPT time (which is more than often around 2,00 sec!!).
You can figure what a "PIA" it is to remove each effect on every object and then re-apply them just to have time control back!
And I'm talking of hundreds of slide with 3-8 objects per each!
+(I wish there was a script or something that could read PPT timing format and kinda "translate" it in a Keynote one).+
Btw... if it's only one or a couple of slide, it's no big deal.
Select the action or transition you don't get the timing control on, put the action to "none" and then re-apply the same effect/transition.
You'll have your timing control back.
    +(If i did get what you mean).+

  • How can I choose the target image in Magic Move?

    Hello,
I'm trying to use Magic Move to transition between slides. There are multiple shapes that are the same size and color on the target slide. Is there a way to control what the "target" shape is in Keynote?
Here's what I mean (please pardon my corniness):
Could I make it so that this image "shrinks" into the box on the far right ("Already")?
Right now, it's defaulting to the third box from the left each time.
Thank you so much for any help!

    Hello HanktheCat,
Thank you for providing the details of what you are trying to do with Magic Move in Keynote.  I found a couple of resources that I think might help.
To use Magic Move, you set a target location by moving the original object to a new location or changing the size on the following slide.  I found an article with some tips on how to set this up:
The Magic Move transition uses graphics and text that appear both on the current slide and the following slide. During the transition, the objects are moved into their new position and size on the following slide. This transition only works when you use an identical image, shape, or text box in a different location or with a different size on the next slide. Magic Move doesn’t work with tables, charts, or movies.
For best results with a Magic Move transition, duplicate the slide and apply the Magic Move transition between the original and the duplicate.
To set up a Magic Move transition:
Create a slide and place the objects (text, shapes, images) where you want them.
Select the slide in the Slide Navigator and press Command-D to duplicate the slide.
On the copy of the slide, reposition and resize some or all of the text, shapes, and images on the slide.
Add any additional text or graphics you want to add to the copied slide, and delete any objects you don’t want on it.
Select the first slide of the pair and apply the Magic Move transition. For detailed instructions on how to add a transition between slides, see Adding Transitions Between Slides.

  • When will Keynote support Magic Move between masked objects?

OK, moving an object from one slide to another is a cool transition, but when they say Move, they really just mean Move.  You would think it wouldn't be that hard to support the Magic Move transition between two masked objects but it can't be done. And many a folk here wish it could be by the postings I've seen.
Essentially it would allow you to zoom in on a portion of an image as you transition to the next slide, or zoom out to see the big picture.
Come on Apple, we're begging you.

    Thanks for posting Dave.
I noticed this too (along with position problems with builds imported from Keynote 08). Magic Move is definitely a work in process. Make sure you pass your observations on to Apple via the Keynote Menu>Provide Keynote Feedback with reference to this thread.
Very much looking forward to the next release for Keynote 09.

  • Magic Moves not always Magic (non-linear slide orders)

Magic Moves opens the possibility of non-linear slide orders with animated transitions. Previously in keynote (KN '08), as far as I could ascertain, this was impossible. Now a slide with several hyper-linked objects can enjoy an animation of the on screen objects to there new positions, where-ever they may be on the on the linked slides.
Unfortunately, as in some other things Keynote, it seems flakey. While it works most of the time for some reason, even when duplicating the linking slide and repositioning the very same objects, the Move is delayed and instantaneous: decidedly not Magic!
The joy of being able to finally make the fully interactive Keynote presentation that will slide objects the right amount automatically according to there destination slide seems possible. The great thing is I don't have to construct all the different moves linking 26 different pages to each other via various routes (8 links on each page, which happened to be 8x26 possible linking routes = 208 move builds: too much for prescriptive build/move animations).
But if I can't get it too work 100% I can't really show my client. Any know issues with this Magic Move stuff?
I can replicate problem but not predict when it won't work or decode what is triggering the problem. Searching forum only revealed comment the Magic Move is work in progress. Note I am not scaling any objects. Can upload if it helps. Part of the original Presentation with a linear narrative can be seen at:
    http://www.vimeo.com/3018559
Essentially I am endeavouring to make all the images 'clickable' so the film strip glides (against the preset order) to become the centre project. Also like to add a left and right button. All this can be theoretically done with invisible rect's with hyperlinks and Magic moves on each slide.
Thanks for reading though all this – hope it's clearer than mud.

    Thanks for the response, Kyn.
As it happens writing that long explanation, I thought I'd look from another angle and returned to the file – finding the answer straight away.
    Conclusion:
Hyperlinks never use Magic Move transition, even if it is selected transition for the slide. I was getting hoodwinked by the fact that when I had forward and back arrows with hyperlinks to other slides, those slides were before and after the current slide. So they were Magic Moving with a mouse click on the Hyperlink, but only when forward one slide or backward one slide. Any other linking distance failed to Magic Move.
I've already made the feature request but *please second it*, this would be a very powerful feature. Think Non-Linear Presentations and Info Kiosks with seamless transitions. And interaction is an area Powerpoint has decided edge on Keynote so it can and needs to be closed! (PP is such a trial of an interface after KN).

I'll post the .keynote as requested when uploaded.

  • Keynote: magic move: How do I make it add a 3rd slide?

    Hi,
I made a 2 slide Magic Move transition that seemed to work ok, then I added a 3rd, checked all 3, used the Change button and assumed this would work. But it  just won't accept that 3rd slide no matter what I do. Any suggestions?

Magic Move doesn’t work with tables, charts, or movies.
Select the second slide in the Slide Navigator and press Command-D to duplicate the slide
On the duplicate slide, reposition text, shapes, or images on the slide.
Select the second slide  and apply the Magic Move

  • What's the secret to magic move

I've been using Keynote for years and have yet to fully understand how to dependably get magic move to do what I want. At times it feels like there's no rhyme or reason. One moment a transition is working and the next it's unrepeatable.
Has anyone found a detailed magic move tutorial that explains the magic?
Or perhaps you might have some specific tips that will clear things up?
    Thanks!

From page 107 of the Keynote User Guide:
Tips for Creating a Magic Move Transition
Magic Move doesn’t work with tables, charts, or movies.
For best results with a Magic Move transition, duplicate the slide and apply the Magic Move transition between the original and the duplicate.
To set up a Magic Move transition:
1 Create a slide and place the objects (text, shapes, images) where you want them.
2 Select the slide in the Slide Navigator and press Command-D to duplicate the slide.
3 On the copy of the slide, reposition and resize some or all of the text, shapes, and images on the slide.
4 Add any additional text or graphics you want to add to the copied slide, and delete any objects you don’t want on it.
5 Select the first slide of the pair and apply the Magic Move transition.
That being said, there are a lot of little tricks. For example, you can usually group objects to exclude them from Magic Move matching, and if you have an object that isn't matching between slides, usually deleting it from the second, copying it from the first, then pasting it onto the second will match them.
Do you have specific examples of Magic Move not doing what you want it to? If so, we might be able to help you out.
(And if you want Apple to know about it and hopefully fix it in the next release, you could tell them what isn't working for you via their feedback form, or—to be ESPECIALLY helpful—file a bug at http://bugreporter.apple.com and attach the misbehaving Keynote decks to those bugs.)

  • Magic Move Doesn't Work

I am having trouble using Magic Move in Keynote '09. When I duplicate the slide and content, it works when I move only, but if I try to scale it, the transition fades out and back in to the new location. It doesn't create a smooth transition from one scale to the other like it usually does?
Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for your help.
I checked everything you mentioned and none of those solved the issue. The item is an image without any text on it. I even took a completely different image and the same thing happened... so it doesn't appear to be a result of the image itself. The problem carried over to the new image? However, when I used a completely new slide and dropped the same image into the slide as if I started from scratch, it seemed to create the magic move transition. I also copied in all the text from the previous slide.
I'll go ahead with that hack, it's not really a solution, but it will have to work for now.
Still curious what the problem was, but thank you for your assistance. If you still have an idea of a solution, I would love to know in case it comes up again.

  • Magic Move not scaling text

Hi - despite assurances from the manual and the help files, I cannot get Magic Move to scale and move a text box - it just dissolves instead. This from a single slide with nothing else on it, duplicated and then the text moved and resized.
    Any ideas?

Using Grab or any other screen grab application will indeed copy the background color behind the text. In some cases that won't matter, but if you have a gradient background color or something more complex than a solid color, it could be an issue. Also, if you have another object behind the grabbed text, the background will also be visible. Instant Alpha can help, but we can detect flaws in text more than in other graphics, so the results may be disappointing.
If you do use the screen grab method, if backgrounds are not a problem, and your text is being scaled up, then use this technique with the text created in Keynote in its largest size, and then copy and paste accordingly across the Magic Move transition. Since you are creating bitmapped images, text will look a bit chunky if scaled up too large, but scaling down will look fine. Keep in mind you can "reverse engineer" a Magic Move (i.e. create an object in the second slide, copy and paste it into the first, scale down, etc.).
Or you can avoid all this work and just created the vector-based text from another app, as I outlined in my previous post. All issues of backgrounds and text scaling are eliminated.

  • Magic Move with videos

Does anyone know if it's possible to do a magic move transition between 2 videos? I have 2 videos that play as a backgrounds with bullet points that display over the top of them - really want the slide transition to look smooth and the videos roll into each other.

    slobberingdog wrote:
Hi again - can't check out the video as you need to pay ('alot') for it. Might be worth it though.
I watched this at time (ages ago) for free so not sure what you are paying for. Anyhow just because he says "Keynote" does not mean it is +actual table object+ being Magic Moved.
(A large part of the power of Marketing is in creating false perceptions without actual doing anything illegal. This has been discussed on other threads and lots of people made same assumption as you have).
There are ways to do what was demonstrated using pngs of the table for the transition then dissolving to the actual table etc etc.
Not a big deal to do for a Big budget presentation like that but a hassle if you are changing the table data as you need to regenerate pngs and so on

  • Magic Move causing problems with scaled animation

I have a presentation that uses the Magic Move transition between slides. The Magic Move only effects a solid rectangle at the top of the slide which moves to the bottom of the next slide. The Magic Move transition works great except it causes a rescaling of an object on the slide that has been scaled using the scale animation. There are slides where I animate text to move and scale to a larger percentage.
The text animation moves and scales perfectly. When the slide is about to preform the Magic Move transition (advancing to the next slide) the object that was scaled by animation scales back to its original size. Then the presentation advanced to the next slide.
I've reproduced this on two other computers with 'start from scratch' presentations to test. It occurs with any object - text, shape, etc.  Can someone else verify that this is a bug or not?
    OSX 10.9.4
    Keynote 6.2.2 (1878)
    Keynote 6.2 (1861)
    MacPro
    MacBookPro
    Thanks.

    UPDATE.
Just tested my issue in Keynote version 6.0 and there were no issues. Scaled animated objects and text combined with the Magic Move transition will not result in a the scaled object reverting back to it's original size during the slide transition.
I still would like verification from another user that you can repeat my problem in version 6.2. Although I'm 80% sure this is a bug I have found, until someone else can confirm my issue i'll hold off on that conclusion.
