Actionscript Books
I need to learn the basics of Actionscripting 2.0...I have
the Actionscript book " Macromedia Flash 8 ActionScript: Training
from the Source" but I am still lacking the basics... I don't know
when to use certain functions and where to place them. I have the
hardest time with some of the most simple projects such as creating
a preloader correctly. I really need some advice...I got a job
offer and I am lacking basic actionscripting knowledge...I want to
ensure them that I am a great candidate for this entry level
position and I can learn the materials...just need a good teacher
that all...
Hi danielle_01... I found the Friends of Ed book by Sham
Banghal really helpful out of the 3 or 4 books I've bought on the
subject. It was, by far, the easiest to digest coming from a design
background.

Hey guys,
Seeking some advice... I've been a designer for years. I'm
pretty hardcore in Photoshop and Illustrator and can get around in
Flash. Any Flash code I use is very basic or borrowed off the
internet.
My issue... Actionscript is too damn hard to learn. Before
you label me as lazy... I've read a Actionscript book and after
taking copious notes, and now looking back at them, they make no
sense. I also have three different sets of video tutorials, and
have visited Youtube as my last resort.
Any books for amazingly basic script? Any websites?
Also, I want to learn only AS3 now that a new language is
out. Unfortunately most people are still using AS2.
Some of the tutorials online are like trying to figure out
the Da Vinci code, and aren't very descriptive.
One thing I've noticed is that coders aren't the best
designers, and designer aren't the best coders. Anyone agree or
disagree?Hi skoolyb,
I agree with what you (and NedWeb) say: the only way to learn
is to
do/try. Sometimes best with some deadline waiting, 'perhaps'
that
product won't be your best, but usually you'll learn a lot.
But be careful, a client may not know how much time something
may cost.
If you don't either, you may get burned or at best have an
unpleasant
period ahead. In such cases I wouldn't hesitate to get
informed in
places like this.
I don't claim to be a "real good" scripter, but I've learned
a lot over
the years in various environments. Mainly by doing small
experiments not
worth much more than the learning experience, enough for me
If you want to learn which I can't blame you for (what's
better than the
joy of creation?), experiment a lot and don't bite off much
more than
you can chew!
good luck,
Manno

Australian actionscript training
This is a message for any Australian flash developers who are
trying to come to grips with using actionscript to create animation
and other interactivity.
I got a sneak peak at a actionscript seminar being offered by
David Harradine training last week and found it to be a really
worthwhile resource. Usually Im hugely sceptical about training
seminars as I prefer to buy books and utilise this and other
forums, but with this seminar I was pleasantly surprised.
Firstly I should state that I have no relationship to David
Harradine training and that I got to see it purely by luck, through
a friend of a friend.
The seminar is aimed at people who are just starting to
explore actionscript but rapidly gets you up to speed so that you
can tackle more complex scenarios. I decided to post about it,
because I found that when I first started learning actionscript,
that I could really have used something as the glue between the
forums and my actionscript books and this would have been it for
me.
As a visual person there was many times that I just could not
grasp a scripting concept and needed a face to face explanation.
This is exactly what this seminar has the potential to deliver for
people in the same situation as I was. While I found the graphics
used in the seminar to be pretty basic, I didn't mind because what
they were teaching could easily have much slicker graphics applied
to it.
Anyway I know that they are running the seminars in most
Australian major cities and details can be found at their website

Hope this may be useful info for somebody.

CFFORM format flash - Looking for a book
I am thinking about building a CF Flash based site. I have
been testing and reading posts on the net. Seems that a production
grade site will require ActionScript, lots of it.
Should I be looking at ActionScript books or CF books?You can try to learn from here (and watch out for the famous
32K problem):
http://livedocs.adobe.com/flex/201/
http://www.asfusion.com/examples/
Just a little advice and maybe you already know that the
accessing speed of the flash form is pretty slow. If your users do
not have fast internet connection, maybe you should change your
mind in using cf flash. If you have an external site, maybe you can
try to build a module in cf flash, ftp the module to your external
site and test the accessing speed. If the speed is ok with you, you
can continue on what you're doing.
I have been doing many cf flash based sites for my internal
applications only. But for my external (internet) sites, I would
still prefer using cf html form. Because my audiences do not really
have fast internet connection.
Cheers,

Stopping at specific y coordinate
I have some graphics that I want to load into my flash file
above the stage and then slide into the stage area the stage area.
I am obviously new to actionscript, but I thought this would not be
too difficult to figure out.
Here's what I have:
On the frame:
//load Graphic Behavior
this.id_error_mc.loadMovie("smart_qc/id_error.jpg");
//End Behavior
On the movieClip named id_error_mc
onClipEvent (enterFrame) {
if (this._y<3) {
this._y += 10;
This movieClip is set at y -300. I want it to drop down and
to stop at exactly y 3. I comes close, but it's off by a few
pixels. When I adjust the speed, it's off even more. When I adjust
the coordinates it's still off. I suspect I am going about it all
wrong, but I have not been able to find anything on the web or in
my actionscript books that can help me solve the problem.Thanks! That works, but it sort of bounces and does not have
an ease in transition. I have to hit the books and learn some
actionscript. -
Beginner Flex2 / AS3 question
I am a beginner by all respects and have decided to develop
an FTP via browser application for my company website in my free
time. Before I buy a few Flex 2 and Actionscript books for myself
and dive in, I figured it might be smart to ask the community if
its even possible or recommended.
Can you (should you) use Flex2 / AS3 as the basis for a drag
and drop .ftp through browser application? If so, feel free to
advise me on any Flex packages or methods to use as a basis and I
can place emphasis on that in my learning.One thing I'd like to point out, generally I'm all for
recreating something on my own but for something on that magnitude
I'd suggest checking out this link, someone has already pretty much
created what you need to accomplish.
http://www.onflex.org/ted/2007/05/flexftp-ftp-client-in-flex-using.php
obviously if your not using PHP you can change the server side
around to reflect your needs but the source there has already
tackled some of the major issues of a(n) FTP client in Flex. One of
the biggest ones is with sockets you don't know when it's full so
you constantly need to clear it. However if you were to use the
FileReference classes (based on HTTP protocol) your going to need
to configure your server to allow large buffer sizes for files to
be uploaded as well as setup long timeouts. The other drawback is
using sockets theres no way to create a true progress of what's
been done. Just my two cents. Hope this helps. -
Controlling the root timeline from inside a MovieClip
[preface] I'll apologize in advance. I'm a designer, not a
developer. I know very little about actionscript so if you
can help me out, please pretend like I know nothing.
[/ preface]
I just need actionscript to check the value of a variable
when the end of a movie clip is reached and then call an action.
Here's what I've got and it doesn't work. Please don't laugh.
if (p == 1){
tellTarget (_root) {
play();
else if (p == 0){
stop();
(the "stop" on the "else if"
is referring to the movie clip's timeline, not the root
timeline... in case you're wondering)
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!No it's not a school project. Good guess though. It's
actually a self-promo piece for the ad agency I work for. I'm an
art director expanding my horizons. I would take a class or run
through one of the good actionscript books but unfortunately, I
don't have time.
Thanks for the help again kglad.
btw, I've used tellTarget successfully in a few projects in
the last few months. I'm using Flash 8. -
I use Flash Paper 2 regularly to print documents from
Microsoft Access. In Word and Excel there is a toolbar button for
Flash Paper but none in Access, and there is nothing available in
the list of tools to add to a custom Access toolbar.
Is there any way to get a toolbar button for Flash Paper in
other applications such as Access?
ThanksThanks Urami! This worked. However, there is still one set of
buttons that still don’t work. These buttons are programmed
to open a new window that is a specific size and has all the
toolbars and menu bars turned off. The html page that opens in the
window contains an swf file that runs a video.
Again, it works perfectly over the Internet or when I test
the html page from Dreamweaver on my PC, but the window will not
open when the button is pressed if the program is running from a
CD.
This program was originally created with Studio MX 2004 with
Flash Professional. With that version, the CD worked on Windows
2000 PCs but not Windows XP. We re-published the entire program
with Flash Professional 8. Once I fixed the file names as you
suggested, everything works except the buttons that open a child
window. Now these buttons in the Version 8 program don’t work
on a CD running on Windows 2000 either.
Here is the code that I have in Flash movie for the button:
on (release) {
getURL("javascript:newWindow('videowin_turnassist.html')");
Here is the code that I have in the html document:
function newWindow(bookgif) {
bookWindow = window.open(bookgif, 'bookWin',
'toolbar=no,location=no,menubar=no,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,width=400,height=425')
bookWindow.focus()
I got this html code out of a reference book several years
ago and we use it all the time to open child windows from parent
windows.
I tried other code that I got out of an ActionScript book and
from the Help files, but I can’t get any of it to work at all
(not even from Dreamweaver).
Do you have any other suggestions for opening a specifically
sized child window that will run a Flash movie?
TIA

I have a site with navigation buttons in some of the Flash
(Flash 8) movies. The navigation buttons within Flash are
programmed to load a new html file in _Self. All of the html pages
are within the same directory. Here is the code:
on (release) {
getURL("operation-03.html", "_self");
When I upload the site to my Web site, the buttons work
perfectly. However, when I load the site onto a CD, only the
Dreamweaver navigation buttons work. The navigation buttons within
the SWF files do not work. Nothing happens when they are clicked.
I have 'Allow active content from CDs to run on my computer'
checked in the Security section of my browser.
Is there something else I have to do to make these navigation
buttons work when the site is run from a CD?

I'm burnt out badly with the display list....but Merry Xmas
I created two display objects on the main timeline. One is
the a loader Object to load my movies into. The second object
(container) is a movieclip in the library. The problem is, the
loader Object displays on top of container, when container should
be on top. Thus, the loader object should be at the very bottom and
the other object container should be at the top in the stacking
order. In tried EVERYTHING...addchildAt, addchild, you name
it...the loader object is still on tp of everything. How do I know?
because when I load movies, all the loaded movies are on top of
everything on the stage and the container object is on the
bottom...I know this is simple, but I spend days on this and I'm
literally burnt out...please send me in the right direction...happy
xmas; hope u got sum actionscript books under the tree...
Here's the code....
// Create the loader Object and add it to the stage
var my_loader:Loader = new Loader();
addChild(my_loader);
// Create a displayObejct to hold the housed the loaded
movies
var container:blue=new blue();
container.name = "myContainer";
container.x=10.0;
container.y=74.0;
this.addChildAt(container,1);what does container have to do with the loaded movies? ie,
why that 2nd comment? -

Adobe please never forget your market is NOT the old Director

rather user papervision(bleargh) tham DirectorI came across an interesting article by Colin Moock (good
Actionscript book author) regarding the controversy around AS2 vs
AS3; one and a half year after its release AS3 is still
controversial and not widely accepted among Flash developers. Moock
does some fine myth busting (by comparing AS1/AS2 vs AS3 line by
line showing that it isn't that different), and while he himself is
definetly an AS3 'fan', he also puts Adobe on the trial: has Adobe
killed multimedia??!!! Then he does a division which is what I
think is relevant in this discussion about Director as well: there
is the TOOL and there is the LANGUAGE. While AS3 is an enormous
improvement over AS2 is in its consequence and strict logic, this
is mostly to the benefit of engineers; not designers. While it is
fine that for instance ‘buttons’ now is an object like
any other, this/it requires a level of abstraction that is
irrelevant for the designer. Irellevant, irritating, disturbing;
hence counter productive. It is not that designers are stupid, but
this is not what they should use their intellectual resources for
anyway. Even if conceptually brilliant, you should not need to
write five lines of code for simple navigation. The solution
(inspired by Moocks article) is not to reintroduce or cling to old
ways, but to make things like simple naviagtion available in the
TOOL. This division makes sense to me, and I hope it will be
possible to keep these things separate when we discuss the future
of Director as well. Generally Director has been better off than
Flash. Originally our app had plenty of ‘visual
programming’, for instance pauses and transitions directly in
the Score, but this has been downplayed and not improved upon. In
Flash you can’t access individual Layers, while in Director
the Sprite is of course identical to the channel/layer, and
it’s a good thing. We also have had drag & drop
behaviours for simple navigation and such stuff for quite a long
time, but again: this needs to be done even better, so that it is
obvious that this is the right way and the best way. Do not open a
script window – for c&#% sake – for a simple
‘go to’!
Whether Lingo needs imporvement, or be exchanged with
something else, is another debate. I like Lingo, and for me it has
offered a fine gradual transition into more complex programming.
Whether Lingo offers ‘real’ or ‘fake’ OOP
is a moot point for +90% users; you don’t use any of that
anyway when you make a portifolio disk for a client.
As Moock also states, designing a good ‘tool’ is
not an easy task. From what I’ve read about the development
team in India, they seem to lack a deep understanding of what
Director is and needs to be. I don’t blame them, but if
they’re left alone in their development without interplay
from a strong reference group of actual users, I’m not too
optimisitic on Director’s future. Adobe seems to have killed
multimedia – for the time being – by letting Director
drift away, and while Flash is gaining popularity and kudos among
Java developers et al for AS3, the disperancy between that and the
visual environment most people actually is working in is becoming
larger; from a crack to a shaft. It's amazing that they're letting
this happen. -
I am still new with Flash in general. I am creating
advertisements to place on Google Adwords for my website:
http://www.oldwestdvd.com . I
read the other threads and I am still having problems with the
"clickTAG" function.
1) This is what my current action looks like verbatim:
on (release) {
if (clickTAG.substr(0,5) == "http:") {
getURL(clickTAG);
Is this complete? Do I need to add my web address anywhere?
2) Currently I have this action placed on the first frame of
the bottom layer on a button.
Is this the correct place to put this action?
Thank you in advance for your advice.
-ScottScott,
> Flash ads must be 50K or smaller in size
That's no surprise.
> and utilize Flash versions 4 - 7.
Odd. That does surprise me, but hey. It's their site, so
they can call
the shots.
> Does this mean that I won't be able to do this because
> I'm using CS3 Pro? It says that I need to use versions
4-7.
They're talking about Flash Player, so you're fine. Check
out your
Publish Settings and change the version of Flash Player and
ActionScript to
to suit. Flash CS3 is capable of publishing all the way back
to Flash
Player 2.
> Or do I have to remake the ad using a older version of
> Actionscript?
Take care not to confuse ActionScript with Flash Player
versions (or
Flash authoring environment versions). A FLA file, for
example, can be
published specifically for Flash Player 9 but use
ActionScript 1.0. Flash
Player 9 features two virtual machines for ActionScript, AVM1
(for AS1 and
AS2) and AVM2 for AS3, so it can do either. Flash Player 6
through 8 can
handle AS2 or AS1. Flash Player 3 through 5 can handle
versions of
ActionScript that don't have a number at the end -- back when
it was just
called ActionScript. When you look through the Help docs,
specifically the
relevant ActionScript Language Reference, just make sure to
check the
Availability heading on each entry to see what version of
Flash Player
supports the particular function you're trying to use.
In this case, I would configure my Publish Settings for
Flash Player 7,
ActionScript 2.0.
> I really need a book on this stuff. I'm sure you are
getting
> tired of being my Guru. Do you know of any good
> Actionscript books?
Heh, no worries ... I'm happy to help when I can. :) Thanks
to Flash
CS3, the Flash authoring environment is now capable of
publishing in
ActionScript 3.0, so your horizons are pretty open. I do a
lot in both
languages (AS2 and AS3), so it's hard to choose which a
newcomer should
learn first. AS3 is certainly the "cleaner," better
organized, all around
improved edition of ActionScript (which makes sense, because
it's the
newest), but using AS3 means you're bound to publishing for
Flash Player 9
or higher. Ultimately, you should learn both.
Your best bet is to wrap your brain around the concepts of
Object-Oriented Programming. AS3 meets those principles
better than AS2,
and AS2 meets those principles better than AS1. So maybe ...
start with AS3
to get the Big Picture.
I like Elst, Yard, and Jacobs' Object-Oriented ActionScript
3.0 (friends
of ED). You'll also find a Flash 8 (AS2) version of that one,
too. I just
finished a book of my own, co-authored with Tom Green, called
Foundation
Flash CS3 for Designers (friends of ED), which deals with AS3
almost
exclusively and is aimed more at designers than developers
(programmers).
While not an AS-based book, it covers a decent amount of
programming. The
book I'm most looking forward to reading cover to cover is
Colin Moock's
Essential ActionScript 3.0 (O'Reilly), and he also has an
Essential
ActionScript 2.0 (O'Reilly) that covers object-oriented
programming in great
detail.

1037: Package Cannot Be Nested
Hi --
I ran in to the "1037: Package Cannot Be Nested" error when
using the sample
code in Flash help and found the "How to Use the Examples"
portion of the
Adobe Flash help files to finally get my answer. It appears
to be an issue
many others have come across so I thought I would explain in
more detail how
to solve this problem.
What you need to do is save the ActionScript file as the name
of the class,
for example "MyClass." Then you set the Flash movie "Document
Class"
(FILE-->PUBLISH SETTINGS-->FLASH-->SETTINGS) to
"MyClass." You do not need
to call/refer to/load the ActionScript file in the Flash
movie -- it will do
it automatically for you! Just make sure the FLA and the AS
file are both in
the same directory.
RichRichard,
> I ran in to the "1037: Package Cannot Be Nested" error
when
> using the sample code in Flash help
Ah, good one! Yes, thanks for bringing this up. A number of
the
current 3rd party ActionScript books -- and, as you pointed
out, most of the
sample code in the docs -- is written in the form of class
files. I've
heard from a number of people who have tried to copy/paste
such code into
keyframes, then see the 1037 compiler error.
In ActionScript 3.0, all SWFs have a Document class one way
or the
other. If you don't assign one yourself, such as the
MyClass.as you
mentioned, the SWF will receive a default Document class by
the name of
MainTimeline. Which means the SWF's code is already declared
inside a
package (automatically). The introduction of a second
(seemingly original)
package declaration in timeline code cause those two packages
to be nested,
which is not allowed.

Voice over is making the animation slower??
hey there,
i'm currently working on a Flash presentation where i have to
synchronize the animation with a certain voice over, everything
goes well if i set the sound properties are set to (stream), but
since it's a voice over, i have to set the sound properties to
(event) so i can get the best sound quality.
The problem is that when i do that (set the sound properties
to "event") the animation becomes slower when i export to swf and
not synchronized with the voice over (which doesn't happen if the
sound properties are set to stream).
Does anyone know what i should do??
PS. frame rate is 25
file size is 512 x 720 pixels
thanks in advance for any advice : )Ralph,
> i changed the sound settings in the publish tab and now,

Woo hoo! Glad to hear it.
> if it's not too much to ask,

action
> script (i know the basic commands that allow u to
control
> the timeline -play, stop, go to, etc...) but when it
comes to
> more interactivity, i can't do the things i think of
For me personally, it was a breakthrough to think of
ActionScript in
terms of objects. Rather than thinking of basic commands like
the ones you
mentioned (and which might be a jumble of anything), think of
movie clips --
which is what timelines are, even if they aren't movie clip
symbols -- as
solid, manipulatable objects, like a wooden block, a Rubik's
cube, or any
other item you can hold in your hands. Objects have
characteristics (number
of frames, width and height, x and y position, etc.), which
are known as
properties; they can do things (gotoAndPlay(), play(),
stop(), etc.), which
are known as methods; and they can react to things (onPress,
onRelease,
onMouseMove, etc.), which are known as events.
Objects are defined by something called classes, so if
you're dealing
with a movie clip, look up the MovieClip class in the
ActionScript 2.0 (or
3.0) Language Reference. If you're dealing with non-static
text fields,
look up the TextField class. Sounds? Look up the Sound class,
and so on.
Each of these class entries will give you property, method,
and/or event
summaries, as available. Class entries are basically your
Owner's Manual
for the object at hand -- and the Language References in the
Help docs is
tightly organized around this concept. No more hunt and peck,
or in the
very least, the sense of hunting-and-pecking for answers is
greatly reduced.
;) You won't have to guess anymore what an object can do:
you'll see the
full list under each class entry.
> do books help, or do i need to take a course somewhere?
Different people have different learning styles. There are
some good
video training materials online, such as Lynda.com. I
occasionally dip into
those, but I also find books very helpful. I haven't had any
formal
training in Flash (if you don't count books), and I'm a full
time Flash
contractor.
I've been recommending Object-Oriented ActionScript for
Flash 8 lately,
by Todd Yard and Peter Elst (friends of ED). The same authors
have a new
edition for Flash CS3 that just hit the shelves. That will
get you up to
speed on an object-oriented approach to Flash. You might also
want to check
out Foundation ActionScript, by Sham Bhangal (friends of ED),
or the new
Foundation ActionScript 3.0 with Flash CS3 and Flex 2, by
Steve Webster and
Sean McSharry (friends of ED) -- that one is currently
available on
pre-order at Amazon.
Tom Green and I wrote a companion book to the newer
Foundation
ActionScript book, so I'd recommend that too, but ours is
aimed more at
designers, though it does introduce and use AS3 in many of
the chapters.
