Actionscript is on main timeline: Error #1009 comes up.

The Code on Frame 1:

var audio:Sound = new Sound();
var req:URLRequest = new URLRequest("Buzz.mp3");
audio.load(req);
audio.play();
//var channel:SoundChannel= new SoundChannel();
addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, flickerIt);

var glow:GlowFilter = filters[2];
glow.strength = Math.random()*.5 + .35;
sign.filters = filters ;
So Why am I receiving the error when the actionscript is on the main timeline.

The 1009 error indicates that one of the objects being targeted by your code is out of scope.  This could mean that the object....
- is not in the display list
- doesn't have an instance name (or the instance name is mispelled)
- does not exist in the frame where that code is trying to talk to it
- is animated into place but is not assigned instance names in every keyframe for it
- is one of two or more consecutive keyframes of the same objects with no name assigned in the preceding frame(s).
If you go into your Publish Settings Flash section and select the option to Permit debugging, your error message should have a line number following the frame number which will help you isolate which object is involved.

  • Sparks ButtonBar error #1009

    I have an application that I am using a sparks buttonbar for it's menu.  This menu is in its own MXML module, also the dataprovider is a sparks arraycollection, I've also tried a variety of methods in populating the arraycollection whether sparks or mx I get the same results.  Everything works fine until I remove an item from the dataprovider in actionscript than I get an error #1009.  Adding an item works fine.  After removing an item and getting the error debug shows the correct items in the dataprovider and it shows the correct newindex from the indexchangevent.  I've tried the original sdk for flash builder and several diff. nightly builds including the newest.  With the original sdk using itemclick the app had error #1009 with a renderer problem.  With the new sdks error #1009 is showing null object.
    Any suggestions or is there a better sparks component to use for an application main menu (in its own module) which items get added or removed or renamed, and the dataprovider can be an xmlcollection or arraycollection or ...?

  • Error #1009 !! Can't solve :(

    Hi, guys . I made an interactive movie ( or i'm making....)
    Check it out :http://mr-agu.deviantart.com/#/d2s1vfc
    The PROBLEM is that the Error #1009 comes up.
    Here is the actionscript I used.
    home_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, home);
    function home(event:MouseEvent):void
        gotoAndStop(366);
    stop();
    I got a button with instance name home_btn in a layer below the actionscript layer on the same frame...ie. Frame number 365.
    And this error comes
    TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
        at test1_fla::MainTimeline/frame366()
    What should i do ?? Plz help. i'm a N00b in flash.

    Yes, the problem is whith the button. But i have given the button the same instance name " home_btn".
    Now error is :
    TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
        at test1_fla::MainTimeline/frame366()[test1_fla.MainTimeline::frame366:1]
    And the button and actionscritp are in the same frame(365). but it says error in frame 366 !
    Click on this pic and u will get a clear idea of my problem.

  • In actionscript 3.0 how do i make a nested movie clip button go to a frame on the main timeline

    I am making a website based in flash actionscript 3.0 i have a button nested in its own movie clip, because I have the button expanding to be able to read it i have figured out the only way to do this is by creating it as a movie clipa nd inside the movie clip creating it as a button
    I added an event listener to the blog button by saying,
    blog.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER,gotoblog);
    function gotoblog(evtobj:MouseEvent){
         gotoAndStop(2)
    this part of the code works it goes to the 2nd frame of the timeline it is in and stops wich is a blown up version of the origanal symbol
    i added on frame 2 a second command
    blog.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK.gotoblogpage);
    function gotoblogpage(evtobj:MouseEvent){
    gotoAndStop("blogframe")
    trace("the blog button was clicked")
    i have named the symbol blog and have name the frame of where the blog page is going to be "blogframe" this line of code at the bottom is where i run into trouble the output window in Flash is saying "The blog button was clicked" just like i want it to. no errors are accouring why than is the playhead not going to frame "blogframe"? if the button is working when i click it the code is right i belive the problem here is it does not want the playhead to go to the frame i want it to. So i gues my question is, how can i make a button withing a movie clip interact with the main timeline?

    I have a similar problem if could please help me i'd really apreciate it!!
    So i have a looping animation of some thumbnails, the hierarchy goes like this
    Scene1(main timeline) -> imgBar(MC)->imgBarB(MC within the imgBar MC)
    My buttons symbols are in the last MC "imgBarB" where i have this code:
    ss1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, OneButtonClicked);
      function OneButtonClicked(event:MouseEvent):void{
      MovieClip(root).gotoAndStop("ssbox1");
    I want to control the Btns in my "imgBarB" MC to play a labeled frame(named "ssbox1") on another MC on the main timeline,this other MC goes like this:
    Scene1(main timeline)->ssbox_mc(MC where my labeled frame is)

  • Error#1009. Actionscript error in Flash Game I'm making...

    Hi,
    I'm making a Flash game and rather than putting all the AS3 on a seperate .as file, I'm throwing it on the timeline, which may or may not be a mistake since this game is getting really big, really fast and messy.
    And so I'm getting this error when I test:
    TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference at GameBeta_MainTimeline_fla::MainTimeline/frame1()
    From what I've read on this error, it refers to something that isn't instantiated yet, like something that's out of order? Like I'm referring to something that doesn't exist at the point in time that I'm referring to it? So I'm looking at my AS3 and have NO idea. Here is what I have written:
    stop();
    //TITLE PAGE
    play_game.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, startgame)
    function startgame(evt:MouseEvent):void
        gotoAndStop("Name Input");
    //Name and Gender input page
    var userName:String;
    inputField.addEventListener(Event.CHANGE, onInput)
    function onInput(e:Event):void
         outputField.text = "So your name is " + inputField.text + " are you sure?";
         userName = inputField.text;
    confirm_input.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, toCreationpg)
    function toCreationpg(evt:MouseEvent):void
        gotoAndStop("Fem Creation");
        outputField.text = "So your name is "+ userName;
    //Character Creation Page
    readytostart.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, firstscene_plz)
    function firstscene_plz(evt:MouseEvent):void
        gotoAndStop("Day03");
        outputField.text = "Let's make your character, "+ userName;
    So, any ideas as to why I'm getting this error?
    Before I had each page with it's own Actionscript and buttons inside their own movieclips on the timeline. That was getting confusing so I took everything out of the movieclips to place everything on one timeline and have one layer of Actionscript hoping to simplify things and find the problem easier. No luck. It's supposed to have a Title page and a button that goes to the 2nd page where you input your name, and while you type, it shows your name before you confirm by hitting another button that finally goes to the Character Creation page. When I test, I just get that Error#1009, it'll get to the 2nd page for the name input, but the text fields act wacky and the button to proceed isn't working. I'm hoping that when I find the source of this error, the rest will be fixed as well.
    Thanks in advance for any advice offered! I'll greatly appreciate it.

    Yeah, that's what makes me even more confused. I have a seperate file where I'm testing the name input mechanics alone, just using this piece of actionscript, one input box with an instance inputField and a dynamic box outputField, a button, instance enter_name, that confirms and repeats the input on the next page. And it works.
    inputField.addEventListener(Event.CHANGE, onInput)
    var userName:String;
    function onInput(e:Event):void
         outputField.text = "You typed " + inputField.text;
         userName = inputField.text;
    enter_name.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, onClick)
    function onClick(evt:MouseEvent):void
        gotoAndStop("frame two");
        outputField.text = "So your name is "+ userName;
    So I don't get the error with that seperate file so could it be that other things are conflicting with this? Perhaps the order in which I've written my actionscript or the way I've organized my frames? In my other file, it says it's the inputField Event Listener but it'll work when I take out all the other frames and script...

    Okay, so I was on this website earlier, www.peterdavid.net and tried to view a video that Vevo was hosting directly on the site's homepage, when it loaded up till about 56% an ActionScript error came up saying basicallly something like:

    Now my question is really, first of all, is this a problem with the website or with my computer, second, how do I fix this, and yeah I don't know anything about ActionScript, I was not trying to write one at all I simply came across a website and this happened during the video playing. Any thoughts?
    EDIT: not sure if it would help, but the options I had were to Dismiss All and Continue.
    Thanks in advance.

    Usually this type of error is caused by the website, rather than your Flash Player installation.  If you tell us what video on the website is causing it, someone here can test it.
    What OS and browser are you using?
    Also, is 'third-party content' checked on the Flash Player Settings Manager at http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager.html ?

    The target path to the button is wrong. Select the 'overview'

  • Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method

    Here's the context of the problem, in which I will try to include as much information as possible while keeping the explanation brief.
    I am trying to make a portfolio website (architectural design + concept art).  Flash / programing are not my focus and this is my first go at learning the software.  Due to the nature of the content and my (lack) of ability in AS3, I want the the coding to be really simple and still let the site look good.  The way the site is currently structured:
    1) Basic menu buttons that navigate to sections of the site (brings up a new page).
    2) Example, clicking on <Graphics> takes you to a new page and a sub-menu animates in (simple motion tween for the buttons to cascade down).  This animation is a movie clip placed on the main timeline.
    3) On the screen is also a slideshow for all the images within <Graphics>.  Instead of multiple small slideshows, I combined them all into one, so as to avoid complications with add / remove from stage.  There are prev / next buttons that keep images within their sub section (ie 1->2->3->1).  The sub-menu buttons are suppose to link to the start of each sub section, much like chapters on a DVD.  (The slideshow is a movieclip sub-nested in the menu movieclip).
    Main menu buttons work.
    Sub-menu animation works.
    Slideshow works.
    Can't get the sub-menu buttons to access the slideshow chapters.
    I have created and solved about half a dozen errors, and each time I fix something, it just causes another point to break.  I've gone around in circles for days, and not sure which was is up anymore.  So, while the slideshow works independently of the rest of the content, and I think I have the parent referencing correct, the problem I am currently facing is thus:
    TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
        at 03graphics_fla::MainTimeline/frame1()
    I've browsed some other threads, and I think I know what the problem is.  Since the sub-menu is animated, the buttons do not appear on frame 1 of the nested timeline, while the actionscript is on frame 1 of the main timeline - thus the code doesn't exist yet when I click the button.
    Is this indeed the problem?  If so, how do I go about fixing it?
    Additionally, does the structure makes sense on how my site is organized?  Is there an easier / cleaner way to code it?
    (This thing is completely ghetto-rigged, I just need it to function - it's like my own little Millenium Falcon...)
    Cheers,
    Andy

  • Attempt to move main timeline from inside a movie clip breaks menu buttons.

    I am attempting to have the main timeline move from a stopped position over a movie clip to frame 1, where my start menu is.
    The code I'm using does move the timeline but in doing so it somehow breaks the 4 buttons I have in frame 1.
    My code in the movie clip:

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    For the sake of space, I'll leave out all the package declarations and class declarations and just talk about the functions.
    First, the Game class, it has two functions.  The first one is the constructor function and it launches at the beginning of the game:  First the Game function:
    public function Game():void
    //Game code goes here
    }//Game
    We want to listen for someone to click the mouse on the MenuPage, so lets create a new MenuPage and add a listener to the button contiained within it.
    public function Game():void
    menuPage = new MenuPage;
    menuPage.startButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, startGame);
    addChild(menuPage);
    }//Game
    You will notice that before I declared a variable var menuPage:MenuPage, but that's all I did was declare it.  I didn't really make a new instance of it, I just set aside space for it.  In the first line within the Game function, I'm actually turning that variable into a new instance of a MenuPage.
    We don't have a picture of this imaginary menuPage instance, but lets' assume that in our MenuPage MovieClip in the library, we created a SimpleButton called startButton.  Here, I'm adding an EventListener that patiently waits for someone to click that button.  Once we receive that event, Flash is told to call the startGame function.
    As you get better at this, you'll get into custom events, and the eventListener for the button will exist in the MenuPage class file, or even in another class file that you create just for the button.  Something like StartButton.as  But for now, we can do it as above.
    Now the startGame function:
              public function startGame(evt:MouseEvent):void
    //Remove the start Page
    //Add the zombie
    //Add the gun
    }//startGame
    And we'll replace those comments with real code.  It follows along with what we just did above.
    public function startGame(evt:MouseEvent):void
    zombie = new Zombie;
    addChild(zombie);
    gun = new Gun;
    addChild(gun);
    And we also want to clean up some by removing the menuPage, and throwing out the eventListener.
    public function startGame(evt:MouseEvent):void
    zombie = new Zombie;
    addChild(zombie);
    gun = new Gun;
    addChild(gun);
    menuPage.startButton.removeEventListener(MouseEvent.Click,startGame);
    removeChild(menuPage);
    }//startGame
    Now our Game class is complete.
    The Zombie Class
    public function zombieWalk(evt:Event):void
    this.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME,zombieWalk);
    this.x = this.x + 10;
    }//zombieWalk
    Notice we've added a function to the Zombie Class.
    The first function adds an EventListener to the zombie.  We can use the word this and actionScript knows we're talking about the zombie that the class is written for.  This listener fires off every frame.  If our FLA file is set to 12fps, then 12 times every second it will call on the zombieWalk function.
    The zombie walk function moves the zombie 10 pixels to the right every time the function is called.
    On a more advanced level, you'll want to add animation in the MovieClip to move the zombie legs.  You'll also want to use Timer events to space out how often the funtion fires and not ENTER_FRAME events.  And you'll want to use a static constant to establish how far the zombie moves.  We have it now set to 10 pixels, but that can get irritating if we want to change that value later.  But again, baby steps.
    And finally, the Gun class
    public function Gun():void
    this.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, fireGun);
    }//function
    public function fireGun(evt:MouseEvent):void
    this.gotoAndPlay(2);
    }//fireGun
    First we add an EventListener for when someone clicks on the gun.  Once this happens, the listener calls on the fireGun function.
    The fireGun function takes advantage of the frames within the Gun MovieClip.  Say we have three frames in the Gun MovieClip.  The first is just a picture of the gun.  The second is the gun with a flash coming out of the nozzle.  And the third is the gun at rest again.  The line this.gotoAndPlay(2) sends the gun to the second frame with the flash graphic.
    For this to work, each frame in the Gun MovieClip has to have some stop and play commands.
    But.. you said no code on our timeline!! Liar!
    I know.  This is the exception.  You will need basic stop() commands and gotoAndPlay commands to loop animations.  Any MovieClip that has more than one frame will need something to control it.
    So our Gun MovieCLip has the following:
    Frame 1: stop();
    Frame 2: no actionScript... and I mean nothing, not even the words, "no actionScript"
    Frame 3: gotoAndStop(1);
    This will loop the gun to the beginning and wait for the next time the user clicks the gun.
    Advanced features of the Gun class might include a Bullet.as sub-class that creates a bullet MovieClip to fly across the screen.  Sound to play when the shooting takes place.  Object collision detection to see if the bullet hits the target.  And a means by which a custom event will tell the Game.as class that a zombie has been hit and it should be removed from the stage.
    As you go down the rabbit hole of ActionScript 3, you will find yourself at a point where it's just a matter of getting the syntax right for all the built in functions and classes.  Arrays, Loaders, casting variable types.. all that stuff will come.
    I hope this has been helfpul.  It's been on my to-do list for a long time.  When I first started out, no one could provide me with basic answers for how all these classes and whatnot worked.  After teaching myself AS3 for 2 years and reading a gabillion books, I think I've gotten to a point where I'm pretty comfortable with it all.

    It doesn't happen all the time but it will every once in a while. There doesn't really seem to be anything specifically that triggers it either. I also happened to notice that not all of the enemies respond to being clicked on. I don't know if these two things are related or not. I don't know if the error is caused by the code for the monster library item or the code for the main timeline. Thank you in advance for looking at my code.
    This is my code for the monster library item:

    Ok. Apparently, I didn't test it enought times to get the error. I went back and tested it again to get the error. When I did this, the
    trace(this); revealed [object Monster]
    and
    trace(this.parent); revealed [object MovieClip].
    The only one that was different was the one that gave the error. For that one the
    trace(this); revealed [object Monster]
    and
    trace(this.parent); revealed null.
    Then it gave all of the error information.

  • Preloader :Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

    Hi,
    I'm having a lot of trouble getting a preloader to work on my Flash website. I'm new to actionscript, the site works fine but when I place the preloader in frame 1, I get.
    Error#1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
    Then it lists three areas. The buttons on the site don't work anymore.
    I've followed the Lynda com tutorials so don't know what is causing this error.
    Included is the word.doc with the error code, preloader code, the main flash frame 2 code and the debug information.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks!

    You need to make sure 'cards' is named properly and is present when that line of code executes.  If it is somewhere down a timeline, it is not present.
    As far as your preloader code goes, what is infoLoader.  I have to assume it's some form of component since you don't have any code to instantiate it.

  • Stupid TypeError: Error #1009:

    so, movDropDownContainer (which i know is myContainer.container_mc) doesn't exist WHEN revealDropDown() is called (and that error message is displayed).
    we already know it does exist and movDropDownContainer is defined correctly when your constructor is called so some time after that the timeline that contains myContainer.container_mc must move and it no longer exists or actionscript is used to remove the movieclip.
    the most subtle way that can happen is with a timeline created instance (ie, created in the ide).  there are lots of ways this can happen.  obviously, if you see that your timeline moves to or through a frame where myContainer.container_mc doesn't exist, it should be clear why you're seeing that error message.  but this error can be caused by more difficult to understand situations.
    for example, if it appears that movieclip is in every frame but it's in a layer with more than 1 keyframe, then you can have identically named instances (and that all look the same) that are not the same instance.  in fact, the only sure way to know that movieclip exists in keyframes where it appears to exist is to clear all the keyframes in its layer (after the first keyframe where it appears) and then create all the additional keyframes.  at that point, if you do not remove the movieclip from the stage, in any keyframes, all the instances will be the same.  if you do anything else or you've done anything else, you're going to run into this problem.

  • Another TypeError: Error #1009 Problem

    Hey all,   I've searched the 'net and searched these forums but can't seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong.  I'm creating a flash based game for school that so far has ten frames on the timeline.  I have buttons on frame one, frame 5, and frame 10. I have actionscript code to control those buttons on frame 1, frame 5, and frame 10 respectively.  The code is worded identically on each frame with the exception that I've changed the button names and the function names that are called when the mouse button is pressed.   The code works fine on frame 1 and on frame 5, but when I click the button on frame 5 that sends me to frame 10, I get this error immediately:
    TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
        at keys2BibleTest_fla::MainTimeline/frame10()
        at flash.display::MovieClip/gotoAndStop()
        at keys2BibleTest_fla::MainTimeline/stormBtnHandler1()
    I have verified that each instance of the buttons do indeed have the name of the button being listened for in the event handlers. I can change the type from button to movieclip and it works fine.  I can also remove frames 1 through 9 and the code works.
    Here's the code:
    Frame 1:
    stop();
    enterBtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, enterBtnHandler1);
    function enterBtnHandler1(event:MouseEvent):void {
        gotoAndStop(5, "Scene 1");
    Frame 5:
    import flash.events.MouseEvent;
    stormBtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, stormBtnHandler1);
    function stormBtnHandler1(event:MouseEvent):void {
        gotoAndStop(10, "Scene 1");
    chickenOutBtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, chickenOutBtnHandler1);
    function chickenOutBtnHandler1(event:MouseEvent):void {
        gotoAndStop(1, "Scene 1");
    Frame 10:
    import flash.events.MouseEvent;
    creationBtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, creation);
    function creation(event:MouseEvent):void {
        gotoAndStop(3, "Scene 1");
    lifeBtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, lifeOfChrist);
    function lifeOfChrist(event:MouseEvent):void {
        navigateToURL(new URLRequest("http://www.ceoutreach.org"));
    I can't for the life of me figure out what's wrong.  Can anyone help?
    Thank you,
    Mike

    Ned,
    thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, my buttons are on separate layers and separated by blank keyframes to boot.  When I posted originally, the buttons were all on the same layer BUT separated by blank keyframes. After doing some research on the web, I moved the buttons to their own separate layers (one button per layer) and kept the blank keyframes as well.
    Currently, my only filled keyframes are one, five, and ten. All other keyframes are blank except for my labels and actionscript code. I'm using separate layers for labels and actions, too. I attempted to attach the file with my original post but received the message that .fla files are not allowed.  I don't know about your window, but mine says Max size 5.0 MB (my file is 2), All files types allowed except.... .fla is not one of those in the exception list so I expected it to go.
    It's got something to do with the two buttons on frame 10.... I just went into the actionscript and bypassed frame 5, going directly to frame 10 when the Enter button is depressed, and got the same error message.   There's something in the code I'm just not seeing.... when I comment out the code for the buttons, no error message.  Put the code back in, error message comes back.  Delete the buttons and the code and insert new ones, the error message comes back.
    It's got me totally stumped.
    Thank you for trying,
    Mike
    Edit: I forgot to mention, frame ten is the only place on the timeline where instances of these particular buttons are being used. The other frames are populated with different buttons.  Also, when I change the type to movieclip, everything works.  Weird, huh?
