Actiontec MI424WR USB ports

When we will get firmware update to enable the USB ports on the MI424WR router for external harddrive storage?  Really want to see this option available as I missed this capability from my previous Belkin router in my DSL days.

Yeah, I'd like to see NAS enabled on the ActionTec Router too.  As the manual states...
"In the future, with a firmware release upgrade, the USB host functionality will be available for devices such as external storage and cameras."
However setting up NT Shares is easy and that's what I have done on my SOHO LAN.

  • Port Forwarding for L2TP/IPSec VPN Behind Verizon Actiontec MI424WR-GEN2 Rev. E v20.21.0.2

I've got a NAS setup with various services running on custom ports to help minimize exposure (especially to script kiddies). I've tested everything both internally and externally to confirm they all work, and even had someone at a remote location confirm accessibility as well.  Port forward configurations performed on the Actiontec are working well.
I installed an L2TP/IPSec VPN server, tested internally and it connected successfully.  So for all intents & purposes, this validates that the VPN server is correctly configured to accept inbound connections and functioning correctly.
I logged into the Verizon Actiontec MI424WR router, setup port forwarding for UDP ports 500, 1701 & 4500.
Note: I added the AH & ESP protocols based on what I saw on the built-in L2TP/IPSec rules
With the port forwarding in place, I tested VPN externally but it didn't connect.
I've done the following so far to no avail:
Double & triple checked the port forwards, deleted & recreated the rules a few times to be sure
There are no other pre-existing L2RP/IPSec port forward rules or otherwise conflicting port forward rules (e.g.: another rule for ports 500, 1701 or 4500)
There was an L2TP port triggering rule enabled, that I toggled on and off with no change
Verified the firewall on VPN server had an exclusion for L2TP, or that the firewall is off. (Firewall is off to reduce a layer of complexity, but it worked internally to begin with so I doubt that's the issue.)
Since it works internally, and there are no entries in the logs on the device indicating inbound connections, I'm convinced its an issue with the Verizon Actiontec router.  But unfortunately, I'm not sure what else to try or where else to look to troubleshoot this.  For instance, is there a log on the router that I can view in real time (e.g.: tail) that would show me whether or not the inbound connection attempt is reaching the device, and whether or not the device allowed or blocked it?
    My router details:
    Verizon Actiontec
    MI424WR-GEN2
    Revision E
    Firmware 20.21.0.2
Verizon Actiontec built-in L2TP/IPSec rule templates.  They're not currently in use, but are baked into the firmware for easy configuration/selection from a drop down menu.

normally a vpn on that router, will have a GRE tunneling protocol as well.
two ways to build the PF rules,
    Manually
    Preconfigured
I know the preconfigured VPN rules will do the GRE protocol as well, but if you do it by hand you can't get it.

  • ActionTec M1424-WR Rev F Router USB port

Does anybody know if Verizon ever plans to support the USB port to connect prionters, hard drives, etc?
The Verizon Installer hooked up my printer to this port, then called me from his truck after leaving my house to tell me that it wouldn't work!
Last traffic i saw on this from the verizon forum was related to Rev E firmware in March of 2010 (almost 2 years old) that says that they "don't ever" plan to support it.
    Thanks!

I've heard rumors that the latest version of ActionTec's firmware is supposed to add USB Functionality to it. Perhaps when Verizon gets the firmware, they may start pushing it out with USB support. Hopefully it requries nothing more than basic Samba shares. Don't need to install crappy, proprietary software to do file sharing over a network.
But yeah, otherwise for now the ActionTecs just give power via the USB Ports. Nice if you wish to have a light or something in a networking cabnet via a USB LED Light, but that's really it.

  • Cant figure this one out. Port forward of http 8181 to inside server port 80. Actiontec MI424WR

I have an Actiontec MI424WR and have 2 servers nn1 and nn2 running IIS and Apache.
Here is what I have being forwarded currently which works fine outside and behind router.
    192.168.nnn.nn1  HTTP - TCP Any -> 80
    192.168.nnn.nn2  HTTP Secondary - TCP Any -> 8080
I need to add something like (ie. forward 8181 to 80) so i can do http://mysite.com:8181 to website page on 192.168.nnn.nn2:80
    e.g. some like this
192.168.nnn.nn2     HTTP Third- TCP forward 8181 to 80
How do I specify this in the router? I tried several things (like 8181->80) and nothing works.
I tested behind the router and it works fine: http://192.168.nnn.nn2:80 so no problem here.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated

Why don't you just add a web site on port 8181 on 192.168.nnn.nn2 and then change your port forwarding to tcpany to 8181
then build a link from website 8181 to website 80

    Hi VZ tech,
Is the USB port on Actiontec GT784WNV active?
Tested with a pen drive; it was nowhere to be found (devices and printers).
If the current firmware does not support the port, is there any time frame when it will?
    Thank you.

Last I heard, the usb port on the Verizon supplied routers are not active and may or may not be active in later verisions.

  • USB ports on routers?

I have an Actiontec MI424WR (Rev I) router.  It has two USB ports.  What are they for?  Thanks for your help.

At the moment they only serve as powered USB ports. With a firmware upgrade they could start acting as ports to run a printer and perhaps also share an external hard drive, but that is currently not active in the Verizon firmware.

  • How to configure VPN with Cisco ASA 5505 behind Actiontec MI424WR

I'm trying to test my Cisco VPN client from my workplace to my home where I have a Cisco ASA 5505 (VPN server) behind the Actiontec MI424WR.  I'm able to Ping the Actiontec external IP.  I also have Port Forwarding for IKE and IPSec configured on the Actiontec, but I cannot establish the VPN connection.
What do I need to configure on the Actiontec to make this work?
Also, when I test this at home, the MI424WR acts as the DHCP server for my laptop and the Cisco outside interface.  At home, I'm able to establish the VPN connection from my laptop to the ASA, allowing me to see a shared drive behind the ASA.  However, at home, I cannot go to the Internet while using the VPN client.
    Thanks for any help.

those are the best sample config's and resources on how to set the FiOS network
Bridging is possible but difficult.  That link will give you great info on it.
Are you a FiOS customer that has phone/internet/tv
or no tv?   or no phone?    You have to be careful on your configuration or you might lose some TV features and functionality, like the Interactive Program Guide, or the VOD or the Widgets.
Sorry the Portforwarding wasn't enough to resolve your issue, I am not sure that it's a Actiontec config you are looking for, from my understanding of Cisco's and FiOS it may be something behind the cisco that is causing an issue.  You may want to reach out to the Cisco admin that manages that, and find out if there are additional ports that are required and then you can come back and configure those ports too.

  • Problems with FIOS with ActionTec MI424WR

I have had FIOS for a couple of months and am having major problems with the internet and the actiontec MI424WR Router:
I cannot get port forwarding to work.  I have setup several previous routers to do port forwarding to my Windows web server, never had a problem.  Nothing I try on the Actiontec works, all incoming requests are rejected.  Checked Dns, server, everything.
Wireless works well at first, then slowlly degrades until after a week or so the signal is so weak that wifi traffic slows to a crawl.  Turning off the router and turning it back on fixes this problem.
Wired Ethernet traffic becomes flaky.  browsing works for a while, then gets flaky, IE and chrome both report that they can't reach web sites, but other apps can still get to internet.  closing browser does not fix issue, rebooting machine does.
This is the most problematic router I have ever seen.
Is there a different brand of router from one of the more respected router compnaies, like Dlink, linksys, or netgear?

Port forwarding is a little odd the way it's setup.  Took me a couple of days to work it and then it was only by looking at one of the canned protocolsand then emulating it for what I wanted that I made it work.
For example, if you go into port forwarding and select New Entry and under Protocol select FTP it will display the canned setting for port forwarding to an internal FTP server, all you need to do is add the internal IP address of the local host that has the server.  The confusing thing is that what you see for FTP is TCPany -> 21 whereas I expected it to be TCP21 -> 21.  Means that when you set up your forwarding you typically would be selecting protocol User defined and under that protocol TCP (or whichever you want) the leave source port at ANY and change destination port to Single or Range and enter the value.  Then save it
Your other questions appear to say that your router maybe not working correctly.

  • Actiontec MI424WR-GEN2 & Netgear MCAB1001 MoCa Adaptors

    Hi all,
I'm hoping someone can help as the problem I'm having is really starting to get on my nerves!
We have a relatively simple network in our house.  We're on FIOS Internet, no TV, no Voice, and it's over COAX in the house, not Ethernet.  From the COAX port in the living room, we have the Actiontec MI424WR-GEN2 router hooked up.  It works pretty well, with good speeds, and reliable wireless connectivity.  All devices, both wired and wireless work fine.  The problem however, is that some of the upstairs rooms struggle with signal, so I invested in a MoCa based solution.
    As it stands:
    Living Room: Actiontec MI424WR-GEN2 (COAX)
Bedroom 1: Netgear MCAB1001 (with a Roku2 connected to it)
Den: Netgear MCAB1001 (with a gigabit switch connected to it, supporting a Smart TV, Xbox 360, Onkyo Amp, Media Center & Blu-Ray.
When it works, it's all great, however more and more recently, I'm seeing that the Netgear adaptors simply stop passing network traffic.  No DHCP addresses getting through, 169.X.X.X addresses on the devices hooked to them, and when I look in the 'My Network' box on the main dashboard of the Actiontec, it shows the devices as 'Inactive' when they are absolutely active, and are requesting network services.
The only way i've found, so far, to fix the problem, is to reboot the Actiontec, which miraculously provides all the MoCa-connected devices with connectivity again.  The problem is, this is happening almost on the daily basis.  Last night for instance, I completely factory reset the Actiontec, re-configured the network, and wireless, checked the MoCa channel (1150) and connectivity was working.  This was 1030pm.  By 7am, the Roku2 in bedroom 1 was no longer receiving network traffic, and as shown above, was now listed as 'inactive', even though it wasn't.
I don't know whether this is a Netgear, or an Actiontec configuration issue, and I'm not specifically sure why a 'reboot' solves the issue, but then after a few hours it seems to drop out again.
Any help or guidance would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Matt

  • Actiontec MI424WR GigE Bonded LAN interfaces

Good Morning Everyone! I wanted to see if it was possible to bond the 4 LAN interfaces on the Actiontec MI424WR GigE routers to connect up to a etherchannel on a Cisco Switch? I have looked at the manual but I have been unable to find any information on this setup. Just curious to see if anyone has accomplished this. Thanks.

Why would you want to do that?  The FiOS  WAN link is at best 300/65Mbs. A single GigE port has more than enough bandwidth to handle this.  Redundancy is not an issue, as there is only one WAN link so a redundant LAN doesn't buy anything.
To answer your question, I've never heard or seen anything about Ethernet bonding support in the MI424WR routers.  Bonding is something used by high end networks, and not typically found on a small office/home office router such as the MI424WR

  • Can You Daisy Chain Verizon Actiontec MI424WR Routers???

I currently have an Actiontec MI424WR router which is a wireless G router.  Since I have some Tivo HD units in the house (they use wireless G)  that I'm looking to upgrade to Tivo Premiere (they use wireless N), I'd like to upgrade my wireless network to wireless N (I would be able to transfer HD shows between Tivo units ALOT faster over a wireless N network as the G network I have now is very slow).  I also will be buying my son an Xbox and the faster network would help with all the online gaming.
Since Verizon doesn't yet offer a wireless N router, I'm trying to come up with a solution and I think I might have one.
I'm sort of a newbie with networking but here is what I'm looking to do:
I'd want to buy a second router that has wireless N capabilities (I'm looking at the Netgear WNDR3700 Rangemax Dual Band Wireless N).  Then I will go into the Verizon Actiontec router and turn off the wireless function.  Next I will connect the new router to my PC and turn on the wireless function, disable the DHCP and assing the new router a different IP address.  Then I will connect the two routers using an ethernet cable from the Actiontec LAN port the the Netgear's LAN port.  Essentially, what I want to do is have the Actiontec router still bring in all the information in from the ONT but have the Netgear router send it out via it's wireless N signal.
I think in theory this should work but I wanted to pass it by the forum to see what details I'm missing here.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, including any details as I quickly glossed over my idea in the paragraph above.

Your options are to either buy a Wireless N router, DISABLE DHCP on it, and then plug them together (the internal / ethernet side, do NOT use the WAN port on the new router in this scenario.)  That would make you effectively use it as a wireless access point instead of a router.  You do not want to get into daisy chaining routers, it'd doable, but not a complication  you need in your scenario.
Honestly if I were you I'd just get a wireless N access point.  http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4468240&CatId=372

  • Verizon FIOS router Actiontec MI424WR not working with bonjour printing

Running OS X ver 10.9.3. Have a HPLaserJetP1102w. Just upgraded my Verizon FIOS router to Actiontec MI424WR Rev. I. Now my Mac can no longer find the printer wirelessly (it does, however, work thru USB). I see others have had this problem- and apparently some have solved it by changing settings on the router- but those settings options do not appear under 'advanced' for me. Verizon technical support, including the version one must pay for- was totally and utterly unable to help. Any suggestions for how to rescue this? Was all working perfectly with older Verizon router.

    >It's amazing to me that talkting to 4 or 5 Verizon Tech's, they all say "This is new to me,  I've never heard of this."  Ugh...
I've had EXACTLY the same experience. Phone support and the techs who come to my home apparently have no idea this has been happening for months and months. Clearly, this issue hasn't filtered down from the network engineers to support.
