Activate application when screen saver active or display asleep

I cannot activate an application when the screen saver is active nor when the display is asleep.
Neither
tell application "Safari" to activate
nor
do shell script "open -a Safari"
work or log errors when run as part of a GUI script.
Does anyone know the reason or a workaround?

I also tried
tell application "System Events" to tell process "Safari" to set frontmost to true
to no avail. I'm out of ideas, for now.
So, GUI scripting doesn't work if you schedule a script to run without the application being frontmost when the screen saver executes or the display sleeps?

Applications quit when screen saver is running

Hi Forum Members - Recently, I have to reformat and reinstall my entire PowerBook drive using Tiger 10.4.4 and experiencing that applications quit each time when the screen saver is being activated. This was not the case previously. I scanned through each functions within System Preference and could not find how I can preserve opened applications upon returning from sleep mode. I reckon that I am missing something but not able to identify what needs to be set correctly. I certainly need your expert tips to resolve this annoyance. Thanks in advance.

I have begun to experience the same problem on an iMac G5 running 10.4.5. About 50% of the time all applications will have quit upon returning from sleep mode. This computer was recently purchased and the files from a PowerMac Quicksilver G4 were transferred to it. This problem has not appeared on the Quicksilver.

Notification when screen saver goes active

My program needs to know when the Windows screen saver becomes active. Is there some way to catch an OS event that indicates that the screen saver has become active?

Reading here, I think you can use InstallWinMsgCallback() to get the WM_SYSCOMMAND message with WParam == SC_SCREENSAVER when the scrrensaver starts.
In the page I linked there's an explanation on how to detect if screensaver is still running.

Cannot resume, when Screen Saver is active, using TrackPoint or TouchPad

I cannot resume from Screen Saver, neither using TrackPoint, TouchPad, any UltraNav Buttons as well as an external BT mouse.
The one and only way is using the Ctrl+Alt+Del, to resume.
How can I solve that issue?

may be it´s a problem with BOINC, if the problem won´t occur with windows screen saver.
May be there is an option in BOINC preferences or somewhat, that can switched on, to end
sreensaver, when using your mouse and perhaps other users of BOINC have got this problem too.

Radio stops playing when screen saver activates

Tried changing screen saver. Open to other options to try. Don't know why a purely visual screen saver would mess with iTunes radio. Any suggestions?

Seriously. Firefox has been my favorite browser for a while now, but Firefox 4 seems buggy since I downloaded it this morning. If Pandora doesn't work with Firefox 4 I'll have to revert back to 3.6...but what a PAIN IN MY ASS! If this is the future of Firefox...it doesn't look good.
Thanks for letting me rant here...I already started using Chrome, but there are a few things about Chrome that annoy me to no end...so can't see myself using that one either. Maybe time to check out an up and coming browser.
Anyway, I'm pissed!!! Just wasted my entire morning trying to figure out what to do about something I shouldn't even have to think about!

Screen Saver Won't Display

The screen on my iBook is going black after 5 minutes instead of running the screen saver. I've checked Energy Saver and that doesn't seem to be the issue.

The only obvious cause for this would be to have the Display Sleep time set earlier or the same as the Screen Saver start time.
It's also possible you have the screen saver set to start with a black slide. If you have a hot corner set, use that to activate the screen saver and check its ordinary behavior.
Mine fades to black on battery, where both are set to the same time, but goes to the screen saver on ACD power, where the SS is set to activate before Display Sleep.

Monitor flickers when screen saver runs

I have a two monitor setup. I just put in a replacement video card which has one ADC port and one DVI port. The monitor on the ADC port flickers when the screen saver runs. But it doesn't seem to flicker at any other time. The monitor on the DVI port has no problems.
I wonder if there's anything I can do to get rid of the flicker. Could it be the card, which otherwise seems to work fine? Or could it be a memory problems?
Any thoughts appreciated!

I wonder if it is the screen saver. Some really put the 3D graphics hardware to task. Have you tried switching to a screensaver that doesn't demand serious hardware acceleration like "Computer Name" or one of the "canned" savers that display picts like Cosmos, Beach, Paper Shadows, etc?
I keep two different types of temp monitoring on my Macs so see what programs task the system, One is software and the other is a direct-read remote thermometer (remote sensor tucked in the exhaust port of my Intel iMac). When I run the 3D savers, I can see the temps start to go up.

System Preferences crashing when Screen Saver window opens

I have been having a bit of a problem for some time now (a couple weeks).
One day, I noticed my screensaver was gone, and it turned into just the name of my hard drive and the Apple symbol moving periodically on a black background. So, I tried to open the screen saver options to change it, but when I open the Screen Saver tab, the list shows up briefly with nothing on it, then it crashes. I get this error message:
The application System Preferences quit unexpectedly. The problem may have been caused by the FlashPlayer- 10.4-10.5 plug-in.
I have re-installed Flash, but it hasn't helped. Any help on this issue would be outstanding! Thanks

Has anyone found the answer to this problem? I have installed and uninstalled flash player several times but whenever it instals my sytems preferences die, which is very frustrating. I receive the same message as Lazula.

IChat signs off when screen saver comes on

If I ever leave my computer for the 10 minutes or so that it takes for the screen saver to come on, I'm kicked offline. When I get back to the regular screen it automatically signs me back on, but I want to stay online the entire time, not sign off and sign back on. Even if I change my screen saver settings to a longer period of time before it comes on, my computer still goes into some energy saving mode after only a few minutes, kicking me offline.
Is there a way to prevent this?

My Screen saver on my XP (BootCamp) nor my MacBook Pro in OS 10.5.1 do not do this.
I see nothing in Screen Savers or Energy Saver that would cause this.
It is almost like your computer is thinking it is Asleep whilst still displaying the Screen Saver. (Macs always cut Network connections on Sleep)

Can't activate password-protected screen saver

I use my MacBook for sensitive data, so I always make sure to "lock" my screen with a password-protected screen saver when I walk away from my desk. Normally, there are several ways to do this:
1. Wait for the screen saver to come on due to inactivity.
2. Set a "hot corner" for the screen saver and move the mouse to that corner.
3. Enable the keychain menu bar icon and choose "Lock Screen" from the menu bar. (This is my preferred method.)
Under normal conditions, any of these three methods will activate the screen saver.
However, sometimes when I've been running my computer for a while (several days) without rebooting, all three of these methods simultaneously *stop working*. The "lock screen" menu option does nothing, the screen saver hot corner does nothing, and the computer fails to activate the screen saver on its own after the predefined period of inactivity.
Oddly, I can still activate the screen saver by using the "Test" button in the screen saver preferences pane, but in that case it's not password protected, so that doesn't help.
A reboot solves the problem, but this usually happens when I have a bunch of stuff open and it's not a convenient time to reboot. Plus, after a reboot, the problem still recurs a few days later.
I'm not the only one with this problem. Many others have reported the same behavior:

A few of those users found workarounds, but they seemed to be experiencing something different from what I'm describing here. Those who were describing the same symptoms I am still don't seem to have found a solution.
Incidentally, I am not running Spaces or Parallels, nor am I using an external monitor, all of which have been suspected in other threads as the culprit. Quitting all open apps doesn't seem to help either.
The issue seems to be limited to one account at a time; if I switch into another account while having this problem, the other account won't have problems starting its screen saver, but switching back doesn't resolve the issue for the first account. A reboot does.
Can anyone shed some light on this or offer another workaround? Or is this just an ongoing bug?

This may be the stupid question but disturbing me from long time.
when i save any webdynpro application as html file by view->source ,file->saveas->
<something>.htm.
After i open that html file ,the rendered page is not matching to the page i have saved.
please give me the basic idea how the webdynpro application renders.
please help.

The Web Dynpro HTML client has a double buffering mechanism for flicker-free screen updates. If you save the HTML, you will only get the content of the first response.
To see what is sent to the browser with every response, you have to use a tool like HttpWatch.

Screen saver do not display at 15seconds

hi everyone.
I need to set a screen saver to start at 15seconds in macOS X (10.5). This needs to be configured in a particular way since the screen saver is in an secondary account with no admin privileges and parental control turned on.
Basically in this account the user can only access the internet (through Safari).
Now, i've already defined the command "defaults -currentHost write com.apple.screensaver idleTime 15" (in the terminal of the administrative account)and it's works fine. But when i log into the account with limited privileges and run the same script the screen saver only displays after three minutes of inactivity.
Any ideas?

Try using 'su' instead of actually logging into the other account (if you're not already doing that).
In Terminal, while in your admin account, type 'su <15secAcct>' - of course without the quotes and with <15secAcct> replaced by the name of the account whose screensaver time you want to change. It'll ask you for the password for that account.
Then, enter your defaults command to set the screensaver. Type 'exit' to leave that user account and return to your own; then, 'exit' again to get out of Terminal. (Again, maybe you know this, but just in case...)
That should work for you.

CPU overloading when screen saver is on

Recently I've been noticing that whenever the screen saver starts the fan quickly starts working full power, and when I come out of sleep I can see in the activity monitor the cpu usage dropping from almost %100. (There's no cpu intensive process running normally on my Mac).
Not only does the fan noise disturb and presumably shortens the lifespan of my MacBook, but I am worried that some spyware is running when it thinks no one would notice...
So,
1. How can I identify the culprit? (e.g. record which process was leeching the cpu during screensaver)
2. Is there any way I can enforce a general limit on cpu usage when the Mac is idle?

Use Activity Monitor (Utilities folder.) You might consider not using the particular screen saver. If it's a third-party screen saver it may simply be defective.

Laptop freezing when screen saver

Hi and thanks in advance for your time.
My laptop is freezing soon after the screen saver starts. In short, the sxreen saver continues but the mouse doesn't respond. I have no option but to force it to turn off using the turn on/off bottom.
I ran techtool pro and fixed permissions and rebuilt. Did not run disk warrior yet, waiting for update to arrive...

If it's one of Apple's preinstalled or a 3rd party screensaver, check to see if there is a plist file inside the ~/Library/Preferences folder and trash it. Restart your computer.
Boot from your install disc & run *Repair Disk* from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk.
Restart your computer when done.
