Activate middle mouse button in Opera

In the web browser Opera, there is an auto-scroll mode, a.k.a. panning mode that is activated when clicking the middle mouse button. I have noticed that this works in some programs that have a similar feature, like the Microsoft Office suite, but not in Opera. In Opera, the usual "hold middle button and drag" scroll feature of Thinkpads works, but I would like the Opera-specific feature. This would also allow me to pan sideways for large pictures. I can set the scroll function in the settings to "Neither" (i.e. not scroll and not magnify), and that lets me do what I want in Opera, but that also turns off all scrolling in all other programs. And changing mouse settings every time I switch programs is a bit too much of a drag. Since it is possible to turn "Neither" on for specific programs (like the Office suite), I thought it might be possible to do the same for Opera. I fiddled around in tp4table.dat with the Opera setting there, but no effect whatever I do. Does anyone know anything that might help?

Oh, by the way, I am on an X61 Tablet, running XP SP3, but I think this issue is in common to all Thinkpads with a Trackpoint.

  • Middle mouse button does not function for Firefox Tab browsing when cetain programs are running.

My Microsoft Comfort Mouse 3000 middle button is set in Firefox to open and close tabs. (In Control Panel, Mouse, Firefox is the only program exception and the Wheel button is set to middle-click instead of the default Instant Viewer).
When vlc media player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) is running and at some point viewed in full screen, the middle mouse button reverts in Firefox to the default Instant Viewer. When vlc is closed, tab operation once again works.
The same thing happens if MWSnap screen capture (http://www.mirekw.com/winfreeware/mwsnap.html) is running.

Very glad to see I am not alone. Alas....that answer did nothing on my system. I also am very very frustrated that, all of a sudden, my middle mouse button brings up a weird four pointed arrow! (see pic) I NEED it to open links in tabs for researching!!
I turned off auto scrolling in the advanced settings. Restarted FF even...and nada.
I have disabled every single add on I had (only like 6 of them)...and nothing.
This happened all the sudden...I dont even know of an update. FF v3.6.10

  • I used to be able to open links in a new tab by clicking my middle mouse button, but now that I've updated it to the most recent update it doesn't work anymore. How do I fix this? I really love that feature. It works in IE and Chrome but not Mozilla.

Ok, I used to be able to open links up in a new Tab using my middle mouse button. However, I updated firefox with the automatic Updates on the 26th of October and now I no longer can open links with my middle mouse button. Why? I use this feature just about every time I go searching on the internet so I really would like it back. I couldn't find anything that it was related to in the options so I turn this over to you guys.

Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode? <br />

  • Why is it that sometimes when I use my middle mouse button to click on a link to open it in a new tab I will have it open it in an entirely new instance of Firefox instead of a new tab?

Occasionally when I click on a link with my middle mouse button, instead of opening the page in a new tab, it will open a new instance of Firefox.
I've looked through some of the settings and I wasn't able to find anything. It really gets to be bothersome at times because I prefer things to be in tabs instead of a new browser.

It's not specific sites. I can middle-click on the same link 50 times and it will open it in a new tab 45 times and 5 of those times, it will randomly open it in an entirely new window. I don't know what's causing this.
It happens so randomly that I don't know how to pin-point what it could be.

  • How do I change what the middle mouse button/wheel does?

I feel like an idiot asking this, but I can't figure this out...
I've plugged in a bog standard 2 button + scroll wheel third button mouse, but I can't get the middle mouse button/wheel to behave like it would in Windows.  If I click it, it changes programs, hold it it brings up the task switcher thing.  It's like I'm pressing command + tab.
I want it to work normally, where the program I'm using the middle button responds, not the OS.  Like in Firefox, I want to be able to close tabs with the middle mouse button, and open new links with it...instead all it can do is switch programs.
Is there a way to do this?  Am I missing something obvious?

Err...I don't know what happened, but I rebooted and now it's working like normal (knock on wood!).  Noooo idea how it ended up in that state!

[BUG FIXED, see "EDIT 2" at the end of my post]
I'm on Firefox 3.6.21, and I got this problem today after a Greasemonkey update (To version 0.9.10, apparently).
Disabling Greasemonkey solved the problem, and re-enabling it reproduced the problem (middle-clicking links to open in new tab did not work, merely highlighted the link).
I should also note that while Greasemonkey was enabled and the bug was affecting me, Ctrl+Click to open links in new tabs was also broken.
    I hope this helps!
EDIT: It appears this is a known incompatibility/conflict bug between current versions of Greasemonkey and Tab Mix Plus. Read more here:
    https://github.com/greasemonkey/greasemonkey/issues/1406
EDIT 2: GREASEMONKEY HAS NOW BEEN UPDATED with a workaround to fix the problem. Go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/greasemonkey/versions/ to install the update manually. It hasn't been reviewed by Mozilla yet, so it won't be an automatic update for another day or two. All credit to "cannonfodder" below for noticing this; please mark his post as helpful!

  • How can I get the middle mouse button to work with the toolbar button?

Yesterday firefox stopped responding to middle-mouse clicks made in the bookmarks toolbar. Middle mouse buttons still work in web pages.

    Hi,
Please check if this happens in [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe%20Mode Safe Mode]. Safe mode disables the installed '''Extensions''', and themes ('''Appearance''') in '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Add-ons'''. Hardware acceleration is also temporarily disabled - the manual setting is '''Tools''' > '''Options''' > '''Advanced''' > '''General''' > [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Options%20window%20-%20Advanced%20panel?as=u '''Use hardware acceleration when available''']. All these settings/options/add-ons can also be individually or collectively disabled/enabled/changed in Firefox normal mode to check if an extension, theme, option or hardware acceleration is causing issues. Disabling/enabling hardware acceleration, and some types of add-ons in normal mode may require a Firefox restart.

  • Lenovo Thinkpad Compact USB Keyboard with Trackpoint: Middle mouse button and scrolling

    I got this keyboard (KU-1255).
Unfortunately, it generates bogus mouse button events if I click the middle mouse button and use the trackpoint:
With "thinkpad scrolling mode" disabled, the middle mouse button is released as soon as I move the trackpoint while still pressing the button!
Expected behaviour: The middle mouse button is pressed, the event created. Moving the trackpoint moves the cursor normally. Releasing the middle button creates a corresponding event.
With "thinkpad scrolling mode" enabled, the button is registered as pressed, then scrolling occurs as I move the trackpoint and the button is released if I release it.
Expected behaviour: No middle mouse button event is registered if I move the trackpoint. Pressing and releasing the middle mouse button is only registered if I click the button without moving the trackpoint.
When will there be a firmware update available for the keyboard, like for the SK-8855?
Since I am also using Linux, I would be really interested in fixing this in the firmware, not only getting a new Windows driver.

    Help please.

  • Auto-scoll (middle mouse button) gone/not working in Firefox 20/Windows 7 64-bit?

    duplicate of [/questions/956896]
I recently upgraded both my work PC and my home PC to Firefox 20.0.1. My work PC (Win XP 32-bit) works fine, but my home PC (Win 7 64-bit) no longer allows me to auto-scroll when I click the middle mouse button (it does nothing). I have tried restarting Firefox with all addons disabled, as well as a totally fresh install, but haven't had any luck. To clarify, the mouse wheel itself still works as it should, it's just clicking it in to auto-scroll that's the problem.
    Has anyone else experienced this?
    ##EDIT##
    Please delete this (double post)

    Did you check the setting?
*Tools > Options > Advanced > General: Browsing: "Use autoscrolling"
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

  • Middle mouse button doesn't work in Firefox

On my Lenovo Thinkpad the middle mouse button, that scrolls a web page up and down, doesn't work in Firefox only. In all other programs (including IE) the scroll function of the trackpoint middle button works fine, but in Firefox not at all. One solution described at Firefox is to edit a pref for a "ui.trackpoint_hackenabled" parameter, and I did change that value to 1, and restarted Firefox, but NO luck.
    I'm using 4.0.1.

    Nobody got any insights?

  • Middle mouse button in FF 4.0, Linux, does not open new url from clipboard

In new version FF 4.0 on Linux, middle mouse button doesn't open url (which is copy from clipboard in Linux style) without http:// prefix. It open url in format "http://www.mozilla.com" but doesn't open "www.mozilla.com". It works properly in previous versions FF.

And, wouldn't you know it, an hour after posting I found the simple solution...
Someone suggested that the Logitech RX300 mouse had a problem with mapping the middle (wheel) mouse button - try another one.
I tried 4 various mice - they all worked. The Logitech RX30x mice needs some adjustments.

  • Middle mouse button does not open links in a new tab.

If your only solution is to tell me to:
    1.Restart my computer
    2.Start Firefox in safemode
3.Use another hotkey to open a new tab that's not middle mouse button.
Then don't even bother replying. As I've done the first two and it made no difference and 3rd option is a solution at all.
This is frustrating and I'm slightly upset that after reading 20+ Pages of the same problem dating back from 2011 that there are no answers.
I am on a fresh install Windows XP (Yes I know old school) with firefox version 27.0.1.

Cor-El I have done all of those as everyone else suggested on all of the other forums.
I plugged my mouse into another computer and it worked fine. So that lets me know its either something fishy with firefox or my computer.
As I was writing this I found out what my problem was. However I'm unsure of why. I'll explain here in case anyone else has a similar problem.
If I Middle click + Hold click for a solid second on the link it will open a new tab.
It just seems like there is a massive delay in my middle mouse click speed on this system.
Either way I'll investigate this further on my own. I appreciate all of your time.

  • Middle mouse button problem after arch update

    Dear Arch Users,
I have a very strange problem in xfce4 with middle mouse button after arch linux update. It is especially annoying in firefox. Earlier, the middle button just opened a new tab (in firefox) now it also tryies to go back everywhere it can... So, when I am on a some site, I try to open some link by middle button click, it is opened in a new tab - OK, but the firefox goes also to the previos site on a current tab - it is terrible...
    I am using xfce 4.8.0 and xorg 1.9.5 (RC1).
    Cheers,

  • In UNIX middle mouse button pastes clipboard text to noneditable JTextField

In UNIX, if you have a JTextField which is not editable, i.e. setEditable(false), clipboard text can still be pasted to the JTextField if the middle mouse button is pressed. How can I prevent this?
I've tried overriding the JTextComponent paste() method, but that only works if the user hits CTRL-V, but not for the middle mouse button click. A GlassPane works but blocks all events for the entire frame.
How do I prevent middle mouse button clicks from pasting into a noneditable JTextField?

This is actually a bug in java that has been reported and fixed so in the next release i would expect that it will work. We found the bug about 8 months ago and reported it and have since recieved email from sun saying the bug has been fixed. They had a similar problem with the CTRL-V paste before and fixed it but apparently forgot to fix the unix based middle click paste. We decided that the bug wasn't something we needed to fix so we never investigated a work around for it.
