Activate new iPhone with iCloud email as ID?

I've had an Apple ID for years but my wife is new to Apple (iOS or Mac). She'll get an iPhone soon. She doesn't have an Apple ID and doesn't have an iTunes account, either. Also, she doesn't have a personal email.
My goal is to get her on Apple email (which means she'll need a .icloud accout) and to use that address for her Apple ID.
Looks like Apple requires you to register an iOS device first before getting a .icloud account for Mail. So it looks like she has to use another email (like a temporary gmail or yahoo I'd create for her first), create her Apple ID, register her iPhone, then create a .icloud email address, and finally get Apple to change her Apple ID from gmail or yahoo to .icloud.
Is that correct?

It's done and I was able to set up my wife's iPhone and create and use an icloud.com email address in the process. I did not have to use, or create, a gmail, hotmail, yahoo, etc. email to use as the Apple ID in order to set up the device.
During the set-up process, the Apple ID screen asked if I wanted to use an existing email or create a new icloud.com email. I chose the latter. Then I was detoured into a set-up screen for the new icloud.com user name and password. When that was completed, I continued with the iPhone set-up process. When if finished, my wife had an icloud.com Apple ID and Mail email address.
So Apple has made if possible; it's an option right on the set-up screen dealing with Apple IDs. You can't miss it when setting up a new iOS device.

Yes, that's the only options. If the wi-fi network requires that you authenticate using Safari, then it's not appropriate for activating your iPhone.

There is a new security feature in iOS 7 called Activation Lock. You need the
AppleID and passcode used to activate the iPad or it will be useless to you.
There is no workaround.
Suggest you try very hard to remember that AppleID and passcode. Did you try the
AppleId you used to log into this forum?

In which this just gets weirder and weirder...
I logged onto iCloud.com, signed into my account and created a rule there that emails from my husband's address should be allowed into the inbox. I sent another test msg from him to me and got the New Mail notification sound, the new mail showed up but in a flash disappeared. This happened in the space of about 3 seconds.
Messages from his email address are not even showing up in the Trash folder. WTH?

I run both Mac and a PC and have iTunes on both, which has previously recognised my iPhone. I had updated my Mac with the new iTunes software with iCloud and updated my iPad2 just yesterday. I then wanted to do the same with my iPhone today, but my Mac wouldn't recognise the device so I tried it on my PC, which recognised the phone but told me I needed to update my iTunes and this in turn wanted to update my iPhone software. After completing all this and restarting, my iPhone now shows the iTunes icon with the USB plug pointing towards it, obviously wanting me to plug it in to my computer to re-connect with iTunes, but now neither of my computers recognise my iPhone and my PC states an 'Unknown Device'. My Mac doesn't even see it. Can anyone help as I really need to get my phone working?? Thanks

I think iCloud isn't coming until this fall and not until iOS 5 is publicly available. Right now there is confusion because all this stuff is still in beta and things are under NDA and may still change.
I'd just set the 3GS up the same as currently. When iOS 5 is available in the fall (and I don't think Apple has specified beyond "fall"), before you update, there should be any number of guides to setting things up and how it will all work. http://macworld.com is a good place to look for such information.

Just to make sure - You're saying you had backed up your iPhone 4. When you plug in the 3GS, and try to "restore" the data from the iPhone 4 backup onto the 3GS, you get that error? Check to see if the iOS version is up-to-date, and hopefully it isn't. It might also be because your iPhone 4 wasn't, and is causing some sort of problem.

How to change the name associated with iCloud email alias??

I had MobileMe on the iPhone with alias email addresses and I liked how it didn’t attach any “name” to an alias. For example, I had MainUserName, then for aliases I would have [email protected], [email protected], etc. When I sent an email from my iPhone using one of the aliases as the "from" no name would be associated with the alias email address. If it was the MainUserName then it would associate it, e.g. Main User <[email protected]> will show up on the "From" field when I sent an email. But with iCloud on the iPhone (and iPad), it’s Main User <[email protected]>, Main User <[email protected], etc., which I don’t want. If anything it should be Alias 1 <[email protected]> or Alias 2 <[email protected]>. Anyway, I don't want any name associated with the aliases, so when I send an email it will simply say [email protected] or just [email protected] with no name association.
It works differently if I access iCloud through a web browser. If I send an email via iCloud on the web, I can customize and have a different name with each alias, e.g., Tom <[email protected]> or Harry <[email protected]> And the customization carries over to the Mail app on my Mac. That would be ideal if the customization carried over to the iPhone and iPad, but I'd be happy if there was no name association with alias email addresses. Hopefully, there's a solution to the iPhone/iPad situation with iCloud as I don't want the name linked with the main iCloud email address linked with all the different email aliases I have.

I have this exact same issue. Replaced my iPhone 4s with the new iPhone 5s, setting up my new iPhone 5s to restore from iCloud. This completed and now I am unable to delete my old iPhone 4s iCloud backup (consuming 15.1 GB of my 20GB allocation). How can I delete it, so that I get my 15 GB back? If you get the error "Backup not successful" and you've tried deleting the last backup and trying to back up manually without luck, try the following test: Go to...
Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>manage Storage, tap your device name in the Backups section, then look under Backup options. Turn off all apps from backup and then do a manual backup. If that doesn't work, then this post will not help. If the backup works, then go back to the app list and turn some on and try another backup. If successful, keep repeating these steps. If it fails at some point, then try to zero in on the one app that seems to make the backup fail. (I had this problem and found one app failing, probably due to a corrupt data file.)
This process will take time, but if a backup works with no app data being used but clearly fails with the original settings, then somewhere in the mix of apps is a "bad" one.

My Iphone 4 is telling me the same thing and I believe I figured out what the problem is. I had some fraudulent charges on my itunes account, so I call my bank and disputed the charges. Right after I did that, I started getting the message "Your apple ID has been disabled." I just realized today that the charges are not fraudulent, they are "in app purchases." One of my daughters downloaded the game Top Girl which is FREE, but in the game Top Girl you use money in the game to purchase things. It just so happens that the money you use to purchase things is real money MY Money!!!. My daughter thought she was using play money in the game and had no idea she was using real money. She spent $106.00 buying stuff. Now I have to call the bank and tell them to release the hold and pay Itunes. I'm hoping this solves the problem. It could be the activation server is unavailable right now, however have you or anyone else ever used that computer to jailbreak or hack another phone? That can have an affect on the hosts file. You can check this regarding information on the hosts file or security software problems.
