Activating original Iphone.

The Iphone went crazy on Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Everytime you touched it - it would hop around all of your contacts, sometimes call a contact or activate Yahoo or Google on Safari. Finally decided that I needed to refresh the software. After doing that - the phone needs to re-activate. But I am being told by the Apple Store that Apple at present cannot re-activate original Iphones. They are working on it? It is almost Thursday - how much longer do I have to wait??
Any ideas or people to call? AT&T was no help.

It does it on it's own if you are on an authorized carrier.

Update iOS on Original iPhone

I have an un-activated Original iPhone that was replaced by my 3GS. I'd like to update the old model to iOS 3.1.3 (which, IIRC, was the last version to work on the Original iPhone) before I pass it on to someone else.
Can I just hook it up to iTunes and click on Restore to Default? I plan on using my G4 iMac running Tiger and iTunes 9 so as to not mess up the settings on my main iMac.

You CANNOT update or restore without the SIM in the iphone that was previously active or an active SIM.

I used BSNL - India previously. After I get problem, I used Mobily -Saudi Arabia again I got problem and I am trying to use Airtel - India.
Does the app Cydia appear on your iPhone?
What does It mean?
What does it say when you look at Settings=>General=>About=>Carrier?

Original iPhone not activated, Help

I have an original iPhone (from 2007) that has never been activated. Can I use the iPhone as an iPod and have access to wireless internet without activating the phone? An Apple representative informed me that I may place a deactivated sim card in the phone and that would allow me to use the iPod and wireless features. Does anyone know if that is correct? Does deactivated sim card mean a sim card that was once used in an active iPhone? Thank you

I thought that the iphone must be activated in order for anything to work. Once it has been activated, then it can be used as an ipod, even when de-activated.

Original iphone works but can no longer be activated for phone use????

I have one of the original iphones that works but I no longer use (as in I paid $700 for it when it first came out). I just gave it to my nephew and my brother tells me Apple and ATT don't support it and he's being told that it can't be set-up as a functioning phone? That the current version of itunes won't support it either? Does this make sense to anyone? Could this be true? I'm on my 3rd iphone version and the first 2 work I just upgraded so now the old phones can't be used? I gave the same nephew a much older flip phone that still works and it has phone service.... Thoughts?

Until this last November, I was using a Blackberry Curve. I was visiting a friend and complained about the trackball giving me fits. He went to his kitchen junk drawer and pulled out his very first iPhone 2g and tossed it to me. I've been using it ever since without issue.
If the phone is in proper working order, it should only take a call to AT&T to order an appropriate plan and sim card. The original iPhone is still fully supported by AT&T and iTunes. While iOS support does end with version 3.1.3 and more and more apps do require iOS4, it still affords a very reasonable user experience. So reasonable, in fact, I am reconsidering my original plan of upgrading to the iPhone 4 this month. What can I say? It kicks BB Curve behind and does everything I need using a sweet grandfathered calling and data plan! laugh

Activating Tomorrow From Original iPhone

The iPhone 3GS I ordered from the Apple Store is due to be delivered to my work tomorrow. I currently have an original iPhone that I sync on my home computer. My original plan was to play it safe and just wait until I get home from work tomorrow to activate my new phone through iTunes from my home computer after doing one final sync from my original iPhone. But now I'm wondering if I can just do a final backup of my original iPhone on my laptop, and then activate the new phone from the same laptop when my phone is delivered tomorrow at work.
Does the backup actually have all the data needed to transfer information from my current phone to the new one(except for music and video files), or should I really wait to activate my new phone from the computer I've been syncing from? I'm mainly concerned with my contacts, calendar info, and notes.

Original iphone activation

I have an original iphone (day 1) that I dropped on its head and now has problems. I own a backup original iphone that I want to use in its place. Can I activate the backup without a new contract? I don't want to lose my upgrade discount. I swapped the SIM card and itunes acts as if I am a new customer, asking me what calling plan I want.

How do I unlock my original iPhone to be used as a backup to my iPhone 3G?

Some background:
Back in July '08, my original iPhone died. This occurred 2-3 weeks after the 1 year warranty expired and the Genius at my local Apple Store was kind enough to still replace it with a refurbished one. However, before I met with the Genius, I bought an iPhone 3G (which is what I'm using now).
My question:
The refurbished iPhone came with firmware 1.1.4 and is useless because it keeps showing the 'connect to iTunes' image. How do I unlock it so I can use it as a back-up to my iPhone 3G?
Right now, it's just a paper weight. When I first got it, I was hoping I could connect it to iTunes to unlock it but I stopped it half way through the process because it started to cancel my iPhone 3G data plan (to replace it with the EDGE data plan). In fact, I had to go to an AT&T store to restore the data plan on my 3G.
FYI, I have no desire to jailbreak it or unlock for use with other mobile carriers. I just want to unlock the phone so that I can use it with my current AT&T plan. I also did a quick Google search an all the articles I found were for jailbreaking the iPhone.

Ok, weird. After starting this thread, I plugged my original iPhone into my MBP and iTunes displayed a message saying the firmware was too old to synchronize. It suggested that I upgrade the firmware. Instead of continuing, I chose to eject the iPhone and now it's activated - i.e., I can use the iPhone and access the apps (except for the ones that require a data connection). So, I guess I'm all set.
Hopefully, iTunes didn't screw up the data plan on my 3G (I don't think it did since it didn't show any message of communicating with AT&T's servers).

After an iPhone is no longer activated, you can't install a firmware update or restore the iPhone with iTunes (which re-installs the firmware) since activation is required in order to do so.
I'm not aware of a way to roll a restore back.
If you have the SIM card that was used when this iPhone was activated, you can try inserting the SIM card and do another restore. Someone here reported that it is possible to install a firmware update or restore an iPhone with iTunes that is no longer activated as long as the SIM card that was used with the iPhone when activated is inserted.

How do I change the phone number of an original iPhone

My oldest daughter just got a new phone for xmas. She is giving her original iPhone to her sister (who's iphone was stolen) I erased the content, but how to I change the phone number to my younger daughter's #, which is still active.

I thought the data erase feature was only on the new G3's? We did think she had password lock on, which is why we figured it couldn't be returned. We thought whoever found it (she knows she lost it on the school bus, there were only two other high school girls on the bus at the time) couldn't get in to figure out who it belonged too...now we realized she had turned it off and someone actually "stole it" v. "found it"

I'm trying to activate my original Iphone for a few weeks

My daughter dropped my 3G in the toilet- and so of course it is toast. I ordered a new 4S- but they are backordered- so I was told I could place my current sim card into my original Iphone. When I do- it shows a picture of cord to be plugged into Itunes. When I do plug it in, my computer recognizes it, but the phone is just frozen with this icon. I've tried 3 different computers and they all had the newest Itunes software. Has anyone had this happen? And more importantly- do you know how to fix it? I really need a phone for the next 3 weeks! Your patience is greatly appreciated joanr1331! Let's get your iPhone 5c activated once and for all. May I have you remove the sim card, reboot, and reinsert, & retest. Keep us posted with your findings.

Original iPhone, how to use it?

I hooked up my original iPhone and all I can do in iTunes is activate it. I don't need to activate it, I have a new iPhone.
I just want to use it as a 4GB iPod touch and maybe some apps.
Am I missing something here?

Hey Jason,
In order to use the iPhone with iTunes it would have to be activated.
The iPhone resale value is quite high, so you may actually make money selling the iPhone and buying an iPod touch.

Without the original Apple ID & password, you cannot activate iPhone.
It's the new IOS7 Activation Lock that prevent thief restoring/wiping stolen iPhone for reuse.
There's no way to bypass this, you need the owner's Apple ID & password.
