Activating QT pro and associated questions

Recently purchased QT Pro. Registered but not appearing in Applications. Is it meant to?
When trying to make a QT version of an IMovie, receive message error code 1409. What does this mean?
Where does Apple store list of Error Codes?
Any help much appreciated.

Recently purchased QT Pro. Registered but not appearing in Applications. Is it meant to?
No. QuickTime Pro is not a separate application, so you won't find it by searching your system. A Pro key just unlocks the extra features of QuickTime Player and the QuickTime browser plugin. If the Pro labels have gone from the menu items, then your key is correctly registered and you should be good to go.
When trying to make a QT version of an IMovie, receive message error code 1409. What does this mean?
Where are you trying to save the exported movie? Error -1409 usually happens if you try to save or copy Mac OX files to non-MacOS volumes. If you're trying to save on a server or external drive, try saving the exported movie to your internal drive and see if that works.
Where does Apple store list of Error Codes?
Apple hasn't, to my knowledge, provided a single comprehensive list of all the possible error codes for Mac OS X. If you search the web, you can find some lists that users have compiled. Knowing the description of the error code usually doesn't help much in solving the problem, though.

  • I'm looking to buy a new Macbook Pro, and have questions about the Applecare extended warranty?

I'm looking to buy a new Macbook Pro, and have questions about the Applecare extended warranty? I want to know if the 3 year extended warranty covers what damage. Like water damage, accidental damage, lost or stolen macbook, manufactory defects, or any other kind of damage, maybe be even cosmetic damage. Can anyone help me?

If you are talking about features of the MBP itself, as long as you are not looking at  the Retina models, then the memory you can upgrade yourself for a lot less than Apple charges, and that does not affect the warranty as Apple considers memory a user permitted upgrade.  Great sources are Crucial and OWC, both are Mac specialists and have on-line videos on how to do the install.
If the 15" is what you are looking at, a good upgrade is the 7200 rpm hard drive, gives a little better performance over the standard 5400 rpm drive.
The Hi Res screen is good if you do a lot of graphics work.
Comparing the 13" amd 15" you will notice the 15" has a second, discrete graphic processor...helps when you get into heavy duty videos, games, graphics...but keep in mind that kicking in the second processor uses a lot of power and will run the battery down faster.
If you are looking at the Retina models, then keep in mind there are no post-purchase upgrade options...you have to buy with everything you want at the start.
    Just some thoughts.

  • New Mac Pro and migration question

I will be getting a new Mac Pro in a day or so. I currently have a G4 with all the Adobe suite programs and more. I am wondering if it is best to install those fresh. It sure would help to get all my Dreamweaver settings as I have a ton of sites.
Should I just transfer mail and prefs etc.

There are many pros and cons to doing such a thing. The biggest pro to doing so is expediency. Manual transitions, while more efficient, can be quite a pain even when you know what goes where. When this works it works great.
However, there are downsides to it. Firstly, being a new system the best way to gauge it's performance is to have everything fresh and new. While it's more effort you do get a much better feel for what you system can do and a much better awareness of when things are wrong.
Then there's the migration itself. With a data only migration I can't see much going wrong but there are instances when a migration does affect total system performance.
So I guess I've not really answered your question. There are benefits to opting both ways.

  • Just bought a Macbook Pro and have questions about sound libraries

I just bought the lower end Macbook Pro 200 GB Mem/2GB Ram. I installed Logic Studio on it. I have about 129 GB memory left. My question is, how does anybody deal with installing Libraries. On my main desktop, I got a separate hard-drive which holds about 150 GB of sound Libraries which I pretty much use. I could not even put this on my Macbook. I would like to work on my files on my new Macbook but would have half of the sounds missing if I work on an existing file (transferring from my Desktop to my macbook) How does everybody else deal with this. A separate ext HD?
    Thanks

Hello - It seems to me that there is a total mess on Logic Studio Installer that doesn't allow one to install the Jam Packs onto an external drive, if that's where you keep your sound libraries. Why is no one from Apple responding to this post, probably because they know what a dogs dinner the installer is. The run through on the install insists on a system disk to load all the listed software. My Ibook has no room for all the Jam Packs and other audio data, so I did a basic install of just the program packages, invested in a 250GB firewire portable for my libraries. I then tried to install the Jam Packs onto my external drive but have to go back to the main installer, which although is aware of the application install, insists upon my system drive as the disk to use even when you tell it to install media only. Incredibley bad, bad, bad error Apple. The only work around I can find is to actually install the Jam packs then move them to the external hard drive and then use the browser for access - I have no idea as of yet how this will affect other operations. And why is there not just a simple setting ( like all good programs PROTOOLS , ABLETON LIVE ) where one selects the path for the Library. Still can't believe how bad an error can get onto a finished product from Apple. Kinda totally disgusted, Is this just Garageband with some Bells & whistles? I've been editing sound for film for the last 10 years, so I know my way around, but this is just stupid. If anyone knows the answer , as this is a question as well as a rant please do respond. Maybe someone from Apple ?

  • Installing new SSD into older MacBook Pro and Organization Questions!!?

    Hello,
I am about to pull the trigger on a new Samsung 840 Pro 512gb ssd for my older Macbook Pro 5,3 with 2.66 Intel Core 2 Duo.
I need some advice or at least point me in the direction of where I can read up to date info on properly executing the install of my new ssd.
    A little background:
I have a Seagate 500gb external hdd that has many older pictures/videos on it as well as my "just about full" 320gb hdd on this computer that will be getting the 512ssd.
Any comments/suggestions a to how I can organize all of this and have it in one accessable place? (I was planning on installing the 512ssd on this computer, putting everything on the 512ssd and then wiping the external drive and using it as a backup periodically in case something went wrong with the new ssd I would be installing on this computer.  Follow me? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
I've been telling my wife that we NEED to replace this drive before we lose many of our important pictures and other items on it.  We have used 319gb of which 45gb is still available.  I am nervous as this hdd is about 6-7 years old?
The pictures/videos are the most important to us and do not want to lose them.  Thanks, in advance, for your help!

How to use an SSD with your HDD
If you are going to use an SSD as a boot drive together with your existing HDD as the "data" drive, here's what you can do.
After installing the SSD you will need to partition and format the SSD using Disk Utility. Then, install OS X on the SSD. After OS X has been installed boot from the SSD. Use Startup Disk preferences to set the SSD as the startup volume.
Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your user account listing in the sidebar and select Advanced Options from the context menu.
You will see a field labeled "Home dir:" At the right end you will see a Change button. Click on it. In the file dialog locate the Home folder now located on the HDD (HDD/Users/account_name/.) Select the folder, click on Open button. Restart the computer as directed.
When the computer boots up it will now be using the Home folder located on the HDD.
Another more technical method involving the Terminal and aliases is discussed in depth here: Using OS X with an SSD plus HDD setup - Matt Gemmell. This is my preferred approach because I can select which of the Home's folders I want on the HDD and which I don't want. For example, I like to keep the Documents and Library folders on the SSD because I access their content frequently.
Be sure you retain the fully bootable system on your HDD in case you ever need it.

  • Question about Mac Pro and Adding GPU's

I am a recent convert from PC and I had a Dell system that had two Nvidia Cards in it, but I could not use each one to run one monitor because it was SLI and it could only clone my screen and not extend it. So I had to plug both monitors into one card, and I basically paid for one card that I never really used since I wanted two monitors.
I have two monitors hooked to my new Mac Pro, and my question is if I put in another Nvidia GT120 will each GPU run one monitor, and will they run as one big desktop just they way I have it set up now. Plus is there any benefit to having the dual GPU? I work on documentary videos and I use Adobe Creative Suite a lot. Will having the dual GPU speed up things like After Effects and Premiere. I know snow Leopard will help some, but in the mean time will an extra GPU help any?

As Hatter said, you can drive 2 monitors from 1 video card on the Mac. SLI/Crossfire doesn't work under OSX, so unless you need to run more than 2 monitors, there's no need to have more than 1 video card...
And I wouldn't say you got no use out of the 2nd video card in your dell. If you were gaming at all, you were probably getting better performance using the SLI than you would have gotten with just 1 card.
So, yes, under OSX, you can drive 2 monitors with the 1 card and it will let you either clone the desktop on to both displays (both show the same thing) OR stretch the display so the desktop stretches across both displays...
I'll be doing this with my mac pro to drive 3 monitors (using a 2nd video card)... Which should give me a HUGE desktop (I can't describe how much nicer it is to have tons of desktop space when programming or doing video editing...)

    Hi...
    Mac OS X keyboard shortcuts
    Control-F4
Move focus to the active (or next) window
    Shift-Control-F4
Move focus to the previously active window
By the way...  since you are new to Mac, click a clear space on your Desktop. You should see "Finder" top left corner of the screen in the menu bar.
Click Help then click Help Center
As an example type in    keyboard shortcuts
You can use the Help menu for almost any application on your Mac.

  • I had a windows laptop, and I save files like photos, documents, videos and other things on an external hard drive, and now I want to move those files to the Mac book Pro, and then move those files again to another external hard drive 1T. My question is:

I had a windows laptop, and I save files like photos, documents, videos and other things on an external hard drive, and now I want tomove those files to the Mac book Pro, and then move those files again toanother external hard drive 1T. My question is: Is it possible? Doing this willnot affect the files that I had in windows? No information is lost? or how cani do it?

Connect the external drive to your Mac and drag the files from it to your Mac's internal drive. Then dismount and disconnect the external drive, connect the 1TB external drive, and drag the files from the internal drive onto the external. Nothing will have been deleted from any of the drives up to this point; the files will only have been copied. Verify that the files are readable. There's no reason they shouldn't be; this is just a precaution.
Now if you wish to delete the files from any of the drives, drag them to the Trash, and Empty the Trash while the drive from which they came is still connected. If you disconnect the drive before emptying the Trash, the files you were trying to remove from it won't be deleted. They'll remain in the Trash and continue to take up space on the drive.
Note that if your external drives are in NTFS format, you won't be able to write anything to them or delete anything from them, though you will be able to read and copy the files they contain. The NTFS disk format is read-only to the Mac OS, unless you have a third-party NTFS driver installed. To make your drives cross-platform readable and writable, you must reformat them in the FAT32 or ExFAT format.

  • What are the pros and cons using Active Data Guard vs Data Guard?

My understanding is that Active Data Guard is an additional database option for Oracle 11gR2 Enterprise Edition. I need to know the pros and cons using Active Data Guard vs Data Guard in order to decide whether to get pay extra for the Active Data Guard.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hemant K Chitale wrote:
Before jumping in to Active Data Guard, one needs to evaluate :
    a. Is there really a need to run queries on the Standby ? The Standby could / should be at a remote site so queries are "across the network". Depending on the nature of the queries and the volume of output, the "performance" of the queries may not seem to be the same.
    b. If the database is not in Maximum Protection mode, the data "seen" at the standby may not be in "real-time" synch
    c. Not all applications are truely read-only when querying. Some applications use "jobs" that write to tables when querying. Such would not work with Active DataGuard. (example : EBusiness Suite). There are very complicated ways of handling this -- and one needs to consider if the complications can be introduced and supported.
Over the network accessing standby read only is really not an good idea, I think no one will compare performance with primary and standby,
But some of them they want to validate data which are very critical, as it is matching with primary or not, Its an added advantage with ACTIVE DATAGUARD
Prior to that until unless stop MRP, open database and then we need to validate, So there is an interruption of recovery, I can say its also an advantage where there is no interruption of recovery.

On your friend's computer with an internet connection, log into the Mac App Store with your ID and download Yosemite from the Purchases section of the Mac App Store. The make a bootable USB install media using

Then boot from that on your computer and install

Sure-glad to help you. You will not lose any data by changing synching to MacBook Pro from imac. You have set up Time Machine, right? that's how you'd do your backup, so I was told, and how I do my backup on my mac.  You should be able to set a password for it. Save it.  Your stuff should be saved there. So if you want to make your MacBook Pro your primary computer,  I suppose,  back up your stuff with Time machine, turn off Time machine on the iMac, turn it on on the new MacBook Pro, select the hard drive in your Time Capsule, enter your password, and do a backup from there. It might work, and it might take a while, but it should go. As for clogging the hard drive, I can't say. Depends how much stuff you have, and the hard drive's capacity.  As for moving syncing from your iMac to your macbook pro, should be the same. Your phone uses iTunes to sync and so that data should be in the cloud. You can move your iTunes Library to your new Macbook pro
you should be able to sync your phone on your new MacBook Pro. Don't know if you can move the older backups yet-maybe try someone else, anyways,
This handy article from Apple explains how
How to move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support''
don't forget to de-authorize your iMac if you don't want to play purchased stuff there
and re-authorize your new macBook Pro
time machine is an application, and should be found in the Applications folder. it is built in to OS X, so there is nothing else to buy. double click on it, get it going, choose the Hard drive in your Time capsule/Airport as your backup Time Machine  and go for it.  You should see a circle with an arrow on the top right hand of your screen (the Desktop), next to the bluetooth icon, and just after the wifi and eject key (looks sorta like a clock face). This will do automatic backups  of your stuff.
