Activating Windows 7 with 2012 KMS server

Hi,
I know this question has been asked before
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/7549c0a7-67bb-4a91-9224-2832c1d234eb/setup-a-kms-on-winsvr-2012-for-win7-activation?forum=w7itproinstall,
but I'm not sure I understand the answer.  I have configured VA services on a windows 2012 datacenter virtual server - and as part of the setup/configuration, entered a Windows 2012 KMS key - and am wondering if that key will enable activation of the
Windows 7 computers in our enterprise.
( apologize in advance if this is posted in the wrong forum - or if the answer is elementary )
regards,
Adrian

No.  Once the client workstation has been activated by Win 8 or Win 7, or a combination of the two, you're set.
There is a difference between servers and workstations.  I've noticed having the 5 servers doesn't allow it to start activating workstations.
I'll dig for a technical reference on that.  My answer is based on experience alone.  In my environment, I have about ~80,000 Win 7 boxes and 3 Win 8.  Those Win8 activated fine.

  • Is it possible to run a Windows domain with a Mac Server?

Looking for some advice on getting rid of our Windows domain controller (DHCP server, AD, etc.) in favour of a Mac Server (which we own).  Is it possible to run a Windows domain with a Mac Server?

Snow Leopard Server (10.6) and earlier included Samba which supported acting as an NT Domain Controller (this pre-dates Active Directory). Lion (10.7) and later as standard can no longer act as an NT Domain Controller nor can they act as an Active Directory server.
So the short answer is no.
Theoretically you could port Samba4 to a Mac and Samba4 can act as an Active Directory server. In reality this is not going to be easy but is theoretically possible.
An easier option might be to run a copy of Linux (e.g. Ubuntu) in a virtual machine e.g. using VirtualBox and then run Samba4 in that and configure it to act as and Active Directory server. Then you could connect the Mac side to the Samba4 Active Directory server. This approach would use all Mac hardware, and not have any extra costs of licenses to buy and as far as all the rest of the network is concerned would be a standard Active Directory server environment.

  • Activating Windows 7 by using KMS Without the Active Directory Domain environment

    Dear,
Can we able to activate the Windows 7 O/S Machines by using KMS without the Active Directory Domain environment,As our some of the Computers will not connect with AD domain, we need to setup the speprate KMS
    server for this.
    Thanks
    Balaji K

You can point the KMS clients to the KMS host machine by opening an Elevated CMD prompt:
and running slmgr /skms to point directly to the KMS host.
You do not need a Domain controller.
Volume Licensing: Key Management Service (KMS) Client Options:
    /skms <Name[:Port] | : port> [Activation ID] [Activation ID]
Set the name and/or the port for the KMS computer this machine will use. IPv6 address must be specified in
the format [hostname]:port                          /ckms [Activation ID]

  • Using a Mac on windows network with a proxy server

Hi I’m very new to Macs to apologies if this is a really silly question. I’m
trying to setup a Mac on our network and I’m having an issue getting it to work
properly with our proxy server. I have connected the Mac to the network and
selected automatic proxy configuration in the network settings using the URL of
our Pac file. I am asked for a proxy username and password when I initially try and
access a website but once I have entered my credentials they are saved in
keychain and anyone coming after me can browse using my account. I work in a
hospital so there are many different people accessing different devices. We
monitor and trace all users internet browsing so my question is can I configure
the Mac to ask for proxy credentials for different users? On our windows devices
a login box will appear if the browser has been closed and reopened. Can I do
    this with the Mac?????
Any help you can offer will be very much appreciated.
    Thanks

The short answer is that the IT department is a strict Microsoft shop and also incompetent. Almost everything in that message is patently false. Unfortunately, when accessing Microsoft Server services like this, you will need the support of the IT staff to tell you various settings to use. I think it is pretty clear that they have no intention of doing that.
There is nothing "special" about bootcamp. It is just a boot loader. A Mac running Windows via bootcamp is a Windows PC, not a Mac. As such, it will work perfectly fine in the network. You could also try running Parallels. I believe Parallels can be configured to use a bootcamp partition so you could run Windows via either bootcamp or Parallels.
One of the few things that is correct is that Apple does have to provide driver support for bootcamp and there is the possibility of random incompatibilities - but no more so than any other PC manufacturer. Parallels/VMWare may work around that with a different set of incompatibilities. Don't be too worried about this part. These "incompatibilities" are minor and almost always with funky hardware devices. What you want to do should work perfectly with either Parallels/VMWare or Bootcamp.

  • How to configure a Windows machine with any vnc server software for ARD

I need someone to direct me in the right direction to configure and install any vnc server software so that I can control a windows machine with ARD like I control the rest of my macs in the lab. I need some suggestions as to the best and easiest software to configure and the correct settings to get the machine to be able to show in ARD. Thanks

Sort of. I found this article below that helped me to connect to the remote CF server using MXML. It seems that you have to create a regular project in Flex with Aplication Server Type set to None and connect to CF using the endpoint attribute of the RemoteObject MXML tag or via AS.
    http://www.aliaspooryorik.com/blog/index.cfm/e/posts.details/post/200
However I found out after getting error using the AS3 code to use the endpoint property that
mx.rpc.remoting.RemoteObject does not support  the "endpoint" property
whereas mx.rpc.remoting.mxml.RemoteObject does. See link below
    http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg101439.html//www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg101439.html
So I had to change my AS3 code by adding a new channel to my RemoteObject using a code similar to the one on the link below (Note that this code uses PHP, when I instantiate myRemoteObject, I do so informing that the destination is "ColdFusion" [new RemoteObject("ColdFusion")], so no need to set destination as in the code on the link below

  • "Hide Instance" setting not working with 2012 SQL Server Database Engine

I have turned on the "Hide Instance" setting in SQL Server Configuration Manager on my SQL Server 2012 Database Server. After several restarts of my SQL Server/Agent/Browser services, as well as the server, I am still able to browse for the Instance
from another computer.  I can also find the instance by running the "sqlcmd -L" command.  Is there another step to get this to work?  I have seen other people suggest that you disable the SQL Browser service, but we would like to avoid
    that.

    Hi,
According to the description, I know the you are able to find the instance in the Browse for Servers window from another computer after turning on the ‘Hide Instance’ setting in SQL Server Configuration Manager. Are you able to connect to the instance as
    well?
Make sure that the HideInstance has been set to 1 in the below registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.instancename\MSSQLServer\SuperSocketNetLib
Note: You may take a backup of the key before make any changes on the registry keys.

  • Issues using BitLocker in Windows 8 Emedded with 2012 SQL Server Express

I was told that this forum may be able to help me with my issues (see original thread here:
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/8c81fde1-e91b-46eb-8d2f-b79426805ddd/using-sql-server-2012-express-with-bitocker?forum=sqlexpress).
    Background:
To summarize, I have an OS that is partitioned into two volumes: C and D.
C drive contains the running software, SQL Server install, and the OS.
D drive is the encrypted partition via BitLocker. The SQL Server files are stored here (logs, backup, and mdf).
    Problem:
The software cannot connect to the database stored on the encrypted D volume when BitLocker is turned on. The user account that I use to enable BitLocker is the same SQL Server Service account and has is also part of the Local Admin Group. As soon as I disable
BitLocker, the software works fine and the database connection succeeds. I am currently using the SQL System Admin account to login (SA) and BitLocker is being used with a TPM.
The error I am experiencing when connecting through the software is 'login
    failed for user sa'.
    Thank you for the suggestions/help.

    Hi HMLunger,
Did you install the SQL Server instance successfully? If not, please help to post the summary and detail logs for analysis. By default, the logs can be found in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\Log.
However, if you fail to start SQL Server Express service after successfully installing SQL Server,
you might have to change the paths of the files by running the following scripts from the command prompt. For more details, please review this similar
    thread.
    NET START MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS /f /T3608
    SQLCMD -S .\SQLEXPRESS
    ALTER DATABASE model MODIFY FILE (NAME = logical_name , FILENAME = 'new_path\os_file_name');
    ALTER DATABASE model MODIFY FILE (NAME = logical_name , FILENAME = 'new_path\os_file_name');
    go
    exit;
    ALTER DATABASE msdb MODIFY FILE (NAME = logical_name , FILENAME = 'new_path\os_file_name');
    ALTER DATABASE msdb MODIFY FILE (NAME = logical_name , FILENAME = 'new_path\os_file_name');
    NET STOP MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS
In addition, you can follow the steps in this KB article to uninstall SQL Server.

  • Obtaining keys from old KMS server for permanent use?

We have a client who bought a series of PCs that had previously been on loan from a software company. They discovered about 6 months after the fact that their copies of Office 2010 and Windows 7 on those machines were coming up as deactivated.
My question is:  Can you obtain a permanent key for Office/Windows for a KMS activation after the device has been removed from the network with the KMS server?

I have a couple of these exact units for home... They are loud and expensive. I don't have exact figures, but I can't afford to run them. I bought a rack-case and built a custom "server" instead. The DL380's are now at work instead (where I don't pay the electricity bill )
Thanks. I wonder how it would be with green SATA drives and some power config tweaks. For now, I'll stick with my backup drive in my desk drawer and rsync for my laptop. Thanks all.

  • Connecting to a Windows Network with Cisco AnyConnect

Okay so I am beyond stumped here and hope you can help. So I am able to connect to my companies VPN using Cisco AnyConnect with no problem. The network admin can see me in, and I can even access Web based resources. My problem comes when I am trying to ping the domain controller and our DNS server and cannot. In addition when I go to use RDC to connect to our Terminal Server no love.
No for the very weird part. When I do a traceroute to the TS server by name I am getting DNS resolution. So it appears that I am able to hit the DNS server, but not able to ping it for some reason. I have tried everything I can think of short of binding my computer to the network. Any ideas are very welcomed!!!!
    Thank you all in advance,
    Mike

I am assuming that the windows and Mac appear on the same subnet of your local LAN?
If the PC's are having difficulty finding the Mac and the Mac has a static IP, I would add that listing to your local "hosts" file, the entry would go below your local IP found in that file such as:
    127.0.0.1
192.168.1.5 maciscool (where maciscool=NETBIOS name you entered in the Advanced section of Network under WINS), and/or under "Sharing" at the top box entitled "Computer Name:", if it doesn't work with maciscool.local, try removing the ".local" from the computer name. Older versions of whenders had difficulty with upper/lower case machine names, if it is currently lower case, make it UPPERcase.
The local hosts file used to be found under c:\window\system32\drivers\etc, have no ideal where they hid it under Vista but probably the same place.
Windows should search local "hosts" file before going to WINS, before going to DNS, since you most likely don't have a Windows domain with a WINS server it won't look there and of course it won't find computers on your local LAN via DNS, so by adding those to your local hosts it acts as a mini DNS server to resolve machine names and addresses.

  • Activity window in safari is very complicated.. any fix?

Streaming videos in safari were so easy to download in Lion. Mountain Lion really made the activity window a mess(in my opinion)! Has anyone found a way to download streamning videos in Safari? I tried downloading from the new activity window but with least success.
    Any suggestions?

I've been searching this on google for days now with very little success. However, I did find a method that works. I put this together from bits and pieces of what i've found on google, then expanded on it. It's not as easy as it was with the original activity window, however it does the job and I hope that this works out for you.
    1) First off you need to enable the Developer menu in safari: Safari>Preferences>Advanced and put a check box next to "show developer menu in menu bar". Once you've done this, you'll find a new menu at the top of the screen named "Develop". Now if you've been searching google you've probably seen this already, tried it out, and failed. Keep reading though, it gets better
    2) Next, navigate to the website from which you would like to download the streaming video/music/content. Do not click on the content yet to start it. You do not want safari to start downloading/streaming before you are ready to capture it.
    3) Once you are at the site you want, go to the "Develop" menu and click on "Start Timeline Recording" The bottom third of safari will now show you all the different file/content that are currently being streamed to your computer. It shouldn't show anything yet since you havn't started streaming your video yet.
    4) Once you have clicked on that, you should now start to play the content which you want to download.
    5) Now that it is streaming and downloading, it will show up in the Network Requests Timeline. If you are trying to download a flash video or sound file, I would expect it to be bigger than 1MB, so on the right side of the network requests window, sort the files by size so that the largest files appear on top. When you believe you see the file that you wish to download, go back up to the "Develop" windows and click on "Stop Timeline Recording".
    6) Next to the file that you wish to download in the Network Requests Timeline, there should be a little arrow that is pointing to the right. Click on it and it will try to play the video. It has a hard time loading for me, but that isn't important. What is important is that on the right side of the window, it gives you the full address of the video file.
    7) Highlight the address, copy it, and paste it into the address bar of safari and press enter. The file will now begin to download to your "downloads" folder or wherever you have designated your files to be downloaded to.
    And your done!!!!!!
It's definately not as easy as the old windows activity window, but it works, and in some ways is easier..... Once you get in the habbit of doing it correctly. If anybody is still having trouble, make a reply on here and I will see about doing a picture or video tutorial.
And to anybody who works for Apple that might read this, the activity window was one of the single greatest features that I have ever seen on a web browser. I suspect it may have been removed beacuse of people downloading material(s) that they were not suppose to download, but for all the bad that might have been done with it, it was an amazing tool and a real loss for safari which I think will drive people to other browsers. Please re-activate the activity window and don't cripple safari any further.

  • Windows 2012 Activation from Windows 2008 R2 KMS server

    Hello,
We have 2 KMS servers in our Domain. One has server has KMS key for Windows 2012 KMS installed and other not.
I have joined first windows 2012 server to domain and its been 3 hours the server is still not activated from KMS server.
When client contacts KMS server for Windows 2012 licnese, if key is not installed on first KMS server, will it automatically contact second one? Do I need to change sonmething?
    One more question:
Is it possible to have Windows 2012 key installed on the same KMS server, which is already acting as KMS sertver for Windows 2008R2? and Windows 2003 R2? or wil this cause any issues?
    Mahi

    Hello,
Once a KMS host is activated, it will publish it's record to DNS.  KMS clients attempting to activate will query DNS to get a KMS host, if there is more than one, they will use the first one they get.  The DNS server should be rotating which records
    it hands out.
If they activate, they will cache that record and attempt to use it when they renew, if they fail to renew or activate, they will query DNS for the KMS host again.
Since this is a new KMS host it will need at least 5 KMS clients to contact it meet the count needs for Server.
What version of Windows is the other KMS host machine is it Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2 or is it Windows Server 2003 R2?

    Hi Guys
I did install windows server 2012 and promoted as AD domain to serve with production environment, unfortunately
I unable active windows using for MAK or KMS . " That Key can't be used to activate windows on this PC --it can only be used to set up a key management service. Contact your system administrator or try a different key"

It sounds like the key you are trying to use is for setting up a KMS, not for activating a windows server station.
If you want to use a KMS, use the following key:

Also be sure to create the service record for the KMS in DNS:

For a KMShost with the OS=WS2012R2, you cannot, and, there is no need to, install any other Windows KMShost keys. The WS2012R2 KMShost key, by itself, will activate the KMShost OS, and will also enable the issuing of activations for ALL Windows KMSclients.
Office KMS features are different, and do need to be installed for Office KMSclient activations.
The error you are experiencing is expected, and is a result of your attempt to perform an unnecessary configuration step.

I only have windows 8.1 kms host key but I can't add a client OS kms key to Windows 2008 R2 kms server. And I don't have Windows 2012 R2 license either. Is there any way I can activate Windows 8.1 using my existing kms server? Thanks.

if you have a KMShost product key for WS2012R2, you can patch a down=level Server and be fine.

I'm having similar issues and have a similar question that doesn't seem to be answered:
My KMS server is Windows 2008 R2 (Also is my domain controller). I want to activate Windows 2012 R2 and Windows 8.1 machines off this KMS server. I can install the 2012 R2 key just fine but receive error 0xC004F015 (The Software Licensing Service reported
that the license is not installed) when I try to install my 8.1 KMS key.
What I'm gathering from this thread is that I have to set up a Windows 8.1 host and set it up to be a KMS server exclusively for activating Windows 8.1. Is this correct? If so, Microsoft needs to fix that. I have a SERVER for activations for a reason: it
is a server, not a client. If I am mis-understanding, how do I get my Windows 2008 R2 server to accept the Windows 8.1 KMS key for activating 8.1 clients?
    Thanks!
You don't need Windows 8.1 KMS key. Your 2012 R2 KMS key will be able to activate your Windows 8.1 machines. So your current set up is fine, no need to set up another Windows 8.1 KMS host.
    My problem is I don't have 2012 R2 KMS key as I didn't buy any Windows 2012 R2 license. So I can't use 2012 R2 KMS key to activate my Windows 8.1.
Oh that's interesting. I guess I need to play around more because my 8.1 test machine isn't activating. I'll start a new thread for that if needed. Sorry for the confusion.

  • Windows 8.1 system with new Office 2013 install not pulling down any Office 2013 updates from my SCCM 2012 SP1 server

    Hi,
I've just setup a new Windows 8.1 system and added to my SCCM 2012 SP1 server and all is good and it pulled down all the correct Windows updates and pulls down automatically the FEP updates that are distributed from SCCM 2012 daily.
I just installed Office 2013 on this system and have activated it as necessary.  The problem is that the system doesn't seem to be pulling down any of the Office 2013 updates that have distributed thru SCCM.  I have other systems with
Office 2013 installed and they have pulled down Office 2013 updates in the past when I published them.
If I look at the Office 2013 updates in the SCCM console software section, I can see that for example it shows that Office 2013 SP1 (x86) is needed by one system and installed on 8 other systems and shows as downloaded and deployed.
I've restarted the new system multiple times and also tried to force a software update check from the Configuration Manager applet but nothing seems to happen.
What can I check to try and determine what the problem is?
    Thanks in advance,
    Nick

Yes, the 8.1 system is a member of collection where the update deployment is targeted.
Are there any specific logs I should check in the client?  If I check the WindowsUpdate.log I can see messages about the machine pulling down the FEP updates but that's all it appears to be doing.
in CCM\logs, focus on the updatehandler and updatedeployment, to begin with
