I saw an ad for iwork 09 and am thinking of buying it having read all the negative comments here about pages 5. However, I read a response in the ad that said it was necessary to purchase a "code" form Apple inorder to use it. Does anyone kn ow about this?

The demo and downloadable installers for Pages '09 required a serial number. The DVD version does not.
I am curious what this ad is for? Are they selling you something that was free and unusable without paying Apple?

Just to clarify - in terms of backing up one set of these, would that just be so I had it on disk and didn't need to re-download from Adobe if the installation got corrupted somehow? Or do I need a backup for some other reason?

You don't need to install the older version, you only need the serial number from your original purchase. If you don't have them to hand, did you register? If so, they should be in your Adobe account. If not you really need to contact Adobe, though it isn't clear they will be able to do anything without some proof of purchase etc.

Software activation codes are provided by the software producers, so you need to check with the site you downloaded the app from.

Check the usual suspects, letter O and number zero for example, also letter "ell" and capital i.
We are however not Apple. Contact their telephone support for wherever you are.
