Activation of "Lost Mode" and how do we know?

I arrived home (Hong Kong) on an El Al flight from Tel Aviv this afternoon and stupidly left my iPad Air in the seat pouch in front. It is offline. I became aware of this at the luggage carousel and made a report to the airport staff. I enabled "lost mode" from my iPhone at that time. There was a message that said it would be enabled when next it was online. I got an email at 8pm local time that "lost mode" was enabled at 5am. Two questions:
1. Does this mean that someone has accessed my iPad? and
2. It's not possible for an aircraft to fly that quickly 'back in time" to have a time difference of -15hrs within 6 hours. It took an 11 hour flight for a time difference of 5 hrs to be attained between HK and Israel. So why 5am?

I did not have a password lock set. I am using iOS 7.1.1. On setting 'lost mode' I was informed that the password would be initiated and it would enter lock mode on access to the internet by my iPad. How would I know when it did access the Internet and has therefore enabled lock mode? I thought it had because of this email I received:
Lost Mode enabled on MSY's iPad Air.
This device was put into Lost Mode at 5:00 AM on June 3, 2014. Lost Mode enables Location Services. Find My iPhone and other apps will be able to use the location of your iPad until it is unlocked.
But it has no historical location on the map. This confuses me as to whether it has or not.
My iPad is the Air 128Gb, engraved with my name as a present from my wife and daughters.

hey all,
i need some help regarding a situation i'm in!! the overview is i'm going through a messy breakup at the moment and my ex has possession of my ipad2 (a wi-fi model that's running ios6)!! it's supposedly for my 7 year old son's use (he's autistic)!! anyway, since it's registered to me, i had restrictions enabled with a 4 digit pass code where i had location services turned on, and i disabled my mail account and other things that would not be appropriate for my son to use or access, such as skype, facebook, etc!! basically, all that was on it was his game apps, safari, youtube and our photos of days out etc!! my ex was paranoid i was spying on her through the location service....... i explained that it was a security feature that would enable it to track it if it was lost or stolen!! she even thought i was listening to her conversations and watching her through the camera!! i explained this was absurd and paranoid!! anyway........
well, here's the problem!! after having the restrictions enabled for months, oddly enough after receiving a summons last week requesting her to attend court next week concerning the matter of my contact with my son, i noticed yesterday on my find my iphone app on my icloud account on my macbook the locations services was disabled and the ipad was online, being used!! realizing immediately she's obviously figured out my restrictions pass code and turned off the locations feature!! i immediately put it into lost mode (receiving an email confirming), and within minutes, it was offline for about 4 hours!! in the afternoon, i checked it again, lost mode was disabled and it was being used....... so i put it in lost mode again! 30 seconds later, it was disabled........ finally, i put it into lost mode and added a message that would be displayed on the screen stating 'be warned: i am aware you are using my passcode and password without my permission, which is a criminal breach of my privacy! ignore this & i will report to the police!'! it went offline! 7pm i received a text to my iphone asking my my son couldn't access the ipad and why was there a request to phone her! i ignored, as i know this was a game!! whilst in work, i received an email to my icloud mail inbox stating that 'lost mode had been enabled'......... making me realize she must also have access to my apple ID to gain access to icloud to enable lost mode! it stands to reason that you cannot tell the device you are actually using it is lost and lock it down!! finally, i updated the lost mode with a new message stating i was going to the police and she freaked out!!
so, that's the situation! the questions i need answered are:
*aside from a lucky guess, how else could she get my pass code and icloud pass word? is it possible the ipad has been jailbroken, hacked or spyware has been used to get my pass code and password?
*how come, when in lost mode, it says on the find my iphone feature on icloud that it's active (green spot) and 'online: location services disabled'? should lost mode not render the device unusable? i monitored it for at least an hour last minute...... it kept changing it's status from 'online: location service disabled' to simply 'offline'!
*in the 'find my iphone' app on icloud, next to the lost device, there's a symbol of an orange padlock! what does this actually mean? if it means it's locked, then how can it be online and seemingly active?
just to cap off, i've requested the device be returned to me (my ex has ignored this, stating only she intends to replace this device so she's free from my control and spyware) and i've contacted my solicitor who has offered to send an official letter requesting it's safe return!! as the device is registered in my name and contains my personal information, i understand the implications for her is that she's committed theft and possibly used criminal means to invade my privacy!!

My wife lost her iPhone two weeks ago while on vacation in London (cell service inoperative in foreign country). Using Find My iPhone app on my device, I activated Lost Mode and Play Sound. However, both are listed as "Pending," since it those actions require the phone to connect to the internet (wifi only due to no cellular data coverage.).
We recently returned home and purchased a new iPhone.
However, when looking to restore the apps/settings from her old phone using a previous iCloud backup, iCloud indicates that the old phone connected to iCloud and backed up the original phone at a date that is 1 week after it went missing. How is this possible without locking (Lost Mode Pending an internet connection)?
If the phone was activated and connected to the internet via a wifi signal, shouldn't it immedately lock, show up on the map, Play Sound, and send me an email that the phone has been found?
I also read somewhere that if running iOS 7, the iCloud website interface enables you to track previous locations, for instance if the phone moves from wifi hotspot to hotspot. Is that true? If so, how do I do that?

We are fellow users here on these user-to-user forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support nor Apple.
Have you tried closing all apps via the iPad's multitasking bar and then doing a soft-reset and seeing that helps ? To close all apps :
iOS 7: double-click the home button to open the taskbar, and then swipe or drag each app's screen from there up and off the top of the screen to close it, and click the home button to close the taskbar.
iOS 6 and below : from the home screen (i.e. not with any app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of each app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
Soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

My iPhone was stolen, but I managed to get it back. However I put it in Lost Mode while it was gone and now that I have it back I cannot seem to get it out of Lost Mode. When I switch it on it says connect to iTunes so I do and when it's connected a message pops up saying it cannot be connected because it is in Lost Mode and locked. Is there anyway to sort this? unfortunately - no
if the device is on ios 7.1 or above there's two things.
1) the device may be restored to factory settings - but the phone can't be activated. imei unlock is different to Iphone activatio. - your friend unlocked it to use any sim in any country. iOS 7 forces you to restore the phone and reimpit the original icloud login. This can only be solved if you a)forgot the login/changed it, and can prove to apple youre the owner; b) to get the original owner to deauthorize his account associated with the phone, on his/her computer.
2)if there's also a Passcode lock on the phone, and the last registered sim doesn't work (in the case of a stolen phone) - then it's impossible for you to do anything, full security = restore will lead to activation lock immediately. There's no bypass to it, the fake videos online only allow a bypass if the device was a 'jailbrokem' one - which would invalidate apple trying/ever wanting to help you.
if you know who the phone belonged to previously (usually comes up with the icloud username on it) then you can ask them to deactivate it.
otherwise, you have what we call - a brickb- won't even work as a super iPod touch

Unless you have a backup from which you can restore, yes you will lose all of your data and settings.
You should be able to sync your content back to the iPad if you have been syncing with iTunes all along. If you don't sync with iTunes, you can download much of your paid content again for free as long as you use the same Apple ID. This explains downloading past purchases.

Using a computer, other than the one you have regularily been Syncing and Backing up to, was the begining of your issue.

You can try reaching out to iTunes support and see if they can tell you if a purchased code has been redeemed or not, but I don't know if they track that.
