Active Directory Advertising nightmare
Hello Everyone,
After having suffered from this for a while i would like to share this issue with the community to see if someone has an explanation.
Every time i deploy a secondary DC in ANY environment, Advertising test always fails.
It always returns the name of the primary domain controller.
I always have to do a lot of troubleshooting to resolve the issue. (sometimes its dns, sometimes i need to do an authorative and non-authorative restore...)
Does any body has this issue ? Why does the advertising test always has to fail ?
What can i do to quickly remediate the situation ?

How do I create Local Network Home Folders for Users from an Active Directory binding?
My situation is this... I run an iMac lab at my school. I have a server set up to manage the network user accounts in the lab. Currently, I can sucessfully create Local Network Users and log in to them from any of the iMacs. My school has an Active Directory set up for all the students on campus. What I'd like to be able to do is configure the server to allow the students to use their user names and passwords from their school accounts to log in to the iMacs and have it automatically build a network user folder on the server for them to use during the lab.
So far, I have been able to configure access for the Active Directory accounts to use the services on the server, mainly File Sharing, but I cannot figure out how to allow them to log into a user account on the client's machines using their same Active Directory credentials. I have even attempted to allow the user accounts to create mobile accounts, but that's not working out either. Entering indivual network user accounts into the server for every student every semester will be a nightmare. I'm sure there's a way to do it automatically using the exisitng Active Directory structure.
The live server is running 10.8.5 Server still, but I've also got a clone running OS X Server in case it matters. Please help!ok reinstalled everything dns seems to be working have done sudo changeip -checkhostname and it says that both names match but then i started open directory and can't seem to get Kerberos started, i've tried changing it to stand alone then back again but it does nothing. I'm wondering why this would happen? i've tried adding a kerberos record but it doesn't do it just does nothing so i don't know what i'm doing wrong. I wondered if it might be a problem with the two network cards and dns as on ethernet one it is getting the dns name xserve.xxxx.ac.uk (which matches what the college server wants to call us) but on ethernet 2 gets xserve-2.local because it tells me that it already exists on ethernet one and renames it to this. I need to set up NAT so have ethernet coming in on port one and out again on port two. I wonder if my dns is backwards as its got the 192. address the NAT uses but its linked to the ethernet port one dns maybe this is the problem. would this cause open directory not to start kerberos?

Active Directory Services Can't Connect to Domain
I removed Active Directory services form a server running 2012. I then went to reinstall and reconfigure it, but I keep running into issues. When I launch active directory admin center it gives me an error that it can't connect to any domain, and I can't
make any changes. The local server has already been promoted to the domain controller. Here is the output from dcdiag:

I've been trying to debug errors one at a time, but I'm having a hard time finding any information that pertains to this issue as a whole. Anything you can tell me about this would be great, thank you for reading.It was the only server in the network, the only dc in the old forest. When I re-installed ad ds I gave the new forest different name, but I guess the old settings are still in the system somewhere conflicting with the new setup? Is there a way to
purge the old setup entirely and start over with ad ds, or am I going to have to re-install the whole OS? Thanks again for the help.
Honestly, the best way to handle this is to rebuild the server. There are many things that are "left behind" when you remove the Domain / Forest from a Domain Controller. In fact many articles will say after using ADMT (active directory migration
tool) you should decommission the original Domain Controller (aka reinstall the OS).
While you could spend more time trying to get that domain controller working, it absolutely is going to be 1) More reliable 2) faster to reinstall the OS on the old domain controller. If you are still leveraging storage, or services on that domain controller,
you will want to back them up, or have a transition plan before reinstalling everything on the server. I have a feeling if you choose to keep troubleshooting this, you will run into more issues down the road.

Active Directory domain controller could not be contacted

Help please.
I am trying to add a new server (2008) to domain 'bridgelimited.local' - only one DC (2003) doing everything at the moment. The plan is to add the new server, then move everything over from the old machine, then retire/upgrade the old machine and use as a backup.
I am currently trying to dcpromo on the new machine but I get the following error:
The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate an Active Directory Domain Controller for domain bridgelimited.local:
The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)
The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.bridgelimited.local
Common causes of this error include the following:
- The DNS SRV records required to locate a AD DC for the domain are not registered in DNS. These records are registered with a DNS server automatically when a AD DC is added to a domain. They are updated by the AD DC at set intervals. This computer is configured to use DNS servers with the following IP addresses:
212.50.160.100
196.168.16.2
- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:
bridgelimited.local
local
. (the root zone)
For information about correcting this problem, click Help.
192.168.16.2 is IP address for the DC.

SAP R/3 Enterprise 4.7 Sync with Active Directory on Win2k3 server
All,
I'm having a nightmare with this and I'm hoping someone can either confirm my problem or solve it for me.
We are running R/3 Enterprise 4.7 (Web AS 6.20) and would like to sync the users with Micsoroft Active Directory 2003.
We are exploring the option of using full Active Directory schema expansion for the SAP sync. i.e. so we have all SAP related fields in AD.
According to the SAP notes, I need the WEB AS 6.10 installation CD so that I can run R3SETUP to perform the Active Directory schema modifications.
I have tried to download this from the SWDC with no luck.
So I guess my questions are:
1, Do I really need the 6.10 install cd (it seems it's only the ADSINIT.R3S file).
2, If I do, where can I get it from?, do I need to order it through our SAP contract manager?
In the meantime, I have tried performing the manual schema extension using the RSLDAPSCHEMAEXT report, uploading this to the AD server and running "ldifde" command.
This has extended the schema (or so it says), but I can't see any SAP icon in the AD tree. Have I missed something?
Any help appreciated.

Active directory users and computers wont start on a dc, "the server is not operational"

two which run server 2008 (they work perfectly)
and one never off branch dc that runs server 2008 r2.

I have my first DC Server (DC1). DC1.DOMAIN.lOCAL, I decided to add another Domain Controller. Made it a secondary DNS Server and also GC. Everything seems to replicate, but its missing NETLOGON and SYSVOL Wont replicate.

On the second DC (DCR). I see SYSVOL, no files replicated, also theres no NETLOGON. -
Help with setting up active directory domain controller/DNS - need this for Clustering
Disclaimer: I am new to Active Directory, so please dont rule out the obvious things I may have overlooked.
I need to set up Active Directory Domain controller on at least one server so I can run clustering. I set up the domain controller and ran Cluster validation and that failed - unable to reach writable domain controller.
When I look at my server manager AD DS complain about DNS:

What do I need the Computer certificate for in an Active Directory domain? Theoretical Inquiry
So we are trying to clean up the thousands of certificate we have deployed. We are on a 2008 R2 Active Directory and have been using certs for about a decade. With all of our machines auto enrolling in Computer certificates and renewing every
year we have maybe 50,000 certificates, yes some are expired already but its a nightmare to manage. So what do we need the Computer certificate on all the Windows machines for anyway, some are XP most are Windows 7.
Is the Computer certificate required for Kerberos authentication?
If we don't need it I rather stop publishing the Computer template and simplify our lives.
Please explain (I am not new to PKI, though this question may make me seem like a novice) I get the Web Certs, EFS, etc.Computer certificates are not needed for Kerberos authentication.
They are typically used for 802.1x WLAN or wired authentication, or they might be used for VPN logon. Then you might used them for IPsec / "domain isolation" or perhaps DirectAccess or related solutions by other vendors.
So they are needed for some sort of "network isolation" but they are not required for default AD operations. With some the mentioned scenarios (e.g. 802.1x / IPsec) you have the choice to pick either certificates or other credentials.

Can't fix Active Directory replication
Hi,
I am not sure when the replication issue started, but it is for month now. Whe have two AD's and so actually, we have one working fine (probably). Users are replicated fine (at least they show in the second AD tree) and also, the group policies replicates
(they show in the group policy tree).
But, in the \\dc02\SYSVOL\domainname.com\Policies directory, nothing is shared. It's completely out of date. Also the group policy manager gives an warning: 1 Domain controller(s) with replication in progress.
Anyway, me, and other members of the IT-staff looked into it but it looks that the problem goes deep.
So my question is, what is the best way to solve this. Start to place some errors here or maybe we should completely re-install the second DC? Or both? Or is that a bad idea?

Problem is, Event viewer keeps giving different errors. I just restarted my secondary DC and it gives this error:

Use of the File Replication Service for replication of non-SYSVOL content sets has been deprecated and therefore, the service has been stopped. The DFS Replication service is recommended for replication of folders, the SYSVOL share on domain controllers and DFS link targets.
Before restart, I ran dcdiag again and it gave problems with NCSecDesc. So permission problem. I fixed that and after that I ran dcdiag again and no errors were showing. But sysvol directory was still not in sync.
After that, I restarted and the top error is shown in event viewer and dcdiag gives me another, new error:

After restarting the secondary DC, the primary DC gives an error on DFSREvent but I think that's OK because it lost the secondary DC for a minute. No further errors there.
After restarting the primary DC, it gives also a SystemLog error, but different from the other DC with dcdiag:

Syncing Active Directory Groups for Unity Distribution Groups
We have multiple remote stores with managers that move around quite a bit. This poses an administration nightmare when trying to keep voicemail distribution lists up to date. Is there a way to syncronize an active directory group to a Unity voicemail distribution group? Therefore when we move a manager around in ADS the user automatically moves in Unity.
Unfortunately this feature has not been re-implemented in Unity Connection. This is one of the few things from Unity that I miss. I suggest voicing your desire for this as a feature enhancement with your Cisco AM.
If you are doing that many changes you may want to consider going through the Cisco Unity Connection Provisioning Interface. At least you could script the changes there using code that checked AD group membership and replicated the changes into CUC. -

SharePoint Foundation Active Directory Problem
Hey,
I have a problem with the Active Directory connection to SharePoint Foundation.
My Situation looks like this:
I'm working on a kind of project controlling plattform. Each of our customers has its own site. Also each customer has an account in our Active Directory. For the administrative part, we have a list which contains some infos of the customer, the url to its
site and the contact person.
I wrote an import-script which creates a site and a new item in the list. To put the contact person in the list-item, I use a code-snippet like this:

Now the problem is, that the try/catch block fails too often which means: SharePoint doesn't know the loginNames of some of our customers.
Why does SharePoint not know maybe 1/5 of all our customers? All of them have an account in our active directory, none of them ever logged in the SharePoint (at the time they even doesn't know, that they have a SharePoint site for this project).
I searched the internet for the problem but all I found where questions related to the synchronization of ad-properties to SharePoint Foundation. But I don't want to sync the phone-number or something like that - I want SharePoint only to know all the loginNames
of our customers, not only 1/5 of them.
How do I achive this, what am I doing wrong?
Thank you!web.EnsureUser has nothing to do with the UPS at all. This has nothing to do with synchronisation (it does have a role but it's a maintenance one and nothing to do with authentication.
The simplest answer is that the login names are being entered wrongly. Having said that there are a few areas you can look at to try to identify the problem:
Does it fail repeatedly for the same username? Can you add that user to the site manually using a people picker control and if so will the script work afterwards? Are there any trends in the user accounts that SharePoint cannot find? -

This is definitely a Custom Adapter because OOTB Adapter name is adpADCSADDUSERTOGROUP and NOT adpADDUSERTOADGROUP
So, it is your custom code and in the code you are passing incorrect value of the Active Directory Child process form...
The correct name is UD_ADUSRC and the Group Name column name is UD_ADUSRC_GROUPNAME.
While you are passing UD_AD_CHILD as the child process form and UD_AD_CHILD_GRP_NAME as Group Name column name..
Use OOTB Adapter... Correct these discrepancies... Your addition of group will work
And since you are creating custom adapter, you need to be more careful and remain consistent throughout..
Then if you want to use UD_AD_CHILD_GRP_NAME, use it everywhere consistently... Pass only this value in the adapter...
And even in lookups, if any... Search everywhere... Keep things consistent... They will work... Because good news is that you are able to create user in AD via Java Code...
