Active Directory Cross Forest Domain Migration

Dear All,
We are in the process to rebuild new Active Directory infrastructure. Multiple single forest domains in organization which needs to be consolidated/migrated on single Active Directory Domain. For this consolidation, have some queries to be addressed before
going to start consolidation.
What is the best practices and what tool should we use for domain migration/consolidation
Active directory is on Windows 2003, forest and domain level is on Windows 2003, this will support to Windows 2012 R2 forest and domain functional level, will be migrated
directly from windows 2003 to windows 2012?
When move users to new domain, how will they access the other resources on the network. For e.g. Printer, File server, local web base application
After moving some computers to new domain would be possible to access remaining computers on old domain?
How the file server data will be moved? Best practices with NTFS folder permissions and users rights?
Is there any policy to register network printers on new Active Directory domain?
How users would be access web base application on new domain as their FQDN would be define with old domain name? Any option to change old domain FQDN with new domain that would be describe with any URL link?
Kindly give your valuable input to meet the desire result.
Thanks in Advance.

Dear Lucky,
Ya you can Migrate contents from multiple forest domain. Using ADMT (Active Directory Migration Tool)is the best way to migrate AD content. But you can't migrate from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2012 R2, cause in Windwos Server 2012 R2 don't
have the supportebility of Windows Sever 2003.And not only users you can also migrate all others info (i.e. Computer object info, groups info, Exchange mailbox info, security info). You can migrate users face by face, means which peoples are in old domain they
can access old domain and new users are in new domain. For more info please follow the given link:

  • Active Directory cross forest trust which are deployed in separate subscription

    Hi All,
I know that this is not Azure forum, but I have a question related to Active Directory, Appreciate your understanding and letting me know your concerns about AD cross forest between two subscriptions of Azure.
We have two separate subscriptions of Windows Azure under one Global Account, previously these two subscriptions are treated as a separate company and they are having separate forest and separate domain, these two companies does not have any site to
site VPN with each other over the wan, but these two companies are having site to site connection with Azure for their own subscription respectively.
Additional domain controller for both subscriptions are deployed in Azure in order to authenticate those servers which are already deployed in Azure
Due to some reasons these companies are merging together and due to some reasons they want to have cross forest trusts between these two companies. As we do not have any WAN connection between these two companies the questions has been raised that can we
do a cross forest trust between two Active Directories because these two are deployed in Azure and both companies active directories are deployed in Azure.
Can we achieve this and how we can achieve this, I know that we can expose servers in Azure over the internet by creating endpoints and allow ACL in order to get connection from specific public IPs.
My question is can we achieve this, does it supported from Microsoft. if yes then is there any thing we have to consider before deploying it.
    Thanks

No, i am not using Windows Azure Active Directory at all, i have deployed additional domain controllers from each forest on each subscription.
For example in subscription 1 we have additional domain controller of forest 1 and in subscription 2 we have additional domain controller of forest 2.
    Thanks

  • Problem authenticating user in Active Directory cross domain

    Hi,
We have two different AD servers serving our London and Tokyo networks. My application runs in London network but used by both London and Tokyo users.
The two ADs have domain trust setup between them. I have groups defined in London AD to which users from both the London and Tokyo ADs are assigned.
'm trying to connect to London AD using the "users credentials" and retrieve the groups they are assigned to.
I can connect to the London AD using any of the London user and I could retrieve the groups. But when I use a Tokyo user credentials to connect using the London AD server 'm getting Security exception with a code indicating "User Not Found".
The code I use which is very basic is given below . The code below run as such gives me the following error,
[LDAP: error code 49 - 80090308: LdapErr: DSID-0C090334, comment: AcceptSecurityContext error, data 525, vece.
If I change in the code below, Provider URL to Tokyo AD Server URL then it works but I can't use that due to security restrictions. As per the Windows Team the domain trust should allow me to connect/bind to the London AD Server with the Tokyo credentials.
    Hashtable<String, String> env = new Hashtable<String, String>();
    env.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, "com.sun.jndi.ldap.LdapCtxFactory");
    env.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, "london ldap server url");
    env.put(Context.SECURITY_AUTHENTICATION, "simple");
    env.put(Context.REFERRAL, "follow");
    env.put(Context.SECURITY_PRINCIPAL, "[email protected]");
    env.put(Context.SECURITY_CREDENTIALS, "password");
    env.put(LdapContext.CONTROL_FACTORIES, "com.sun.jndi.ldap.ControlFactory");
    ctx = new InitialLdapContext(env, null);
I would like to know how to authenticate a user in a cross domain Active Directory environment. I read in one of the blogs that the "simple bind" will not work for cross domain user authentication. Unfortunately the blogger didn't mention what would work :( . Any help is much appreciated.
Please bear with me if my query is a naive one and point me in the right direction.
    Thanks

    Hi Praveen,
to avoid losing data when user objects are moved to new locations in the LDAP server, it is possible to configure the User Management Engine to use the value of a specific unique attribute as part of the unique ID instead of the distinguished name.
For this, you have to change the following UME properties:
    For user objects: ume.ldap.unique_user_attribute=<attributename>
    For account objects: ume.ldap.unique_uacc_attribute=<attributename>
    For group objects: ume.ldap.unique_grup_attribute=<attributename>
Be aware that the attribute (i.e. cn or uid) must be unique in the configured user/group path.
Please read SAPNote 777640 for more information regarding this problem and the way to change the UME properties.
    Best regards,
    Robert

  • Active Directory multi forest Kerberos authentication Tomcat

Sorry. It is wrong forum. I forwarded my question to Business Objects forum.
    Hi,
I have Business Objects Enterprise XI R2 with Tomcat installed on Windows 2003. My BO server and users are placed in different Active Directory forests (BO domain x forest A, users domain y forest B). I would like to authenticate users from domain y in my BO using Kerberos.
There is a trust between whose domains. I also set SPN and configured "Windows AD" tab in Central Management Console.
I can add AD group from domain y and list users from that domain in Central Mangement Console. But when user from domain y tries to logon to BO he gets error java.lang.NullPointerException. Due to this error, he is unable to connect.
There is also an error logged in Tomcat stdout.log file:
70051106 [http-8080-Processor22] ERROR com.crystaldecisions.sdk.plugin.authentication.ldap.internal.SecWinADAction  - LoginContext failed. No valid credentials provided (Mechanism level: Fail to create credential. (63) - No service creds)
If anyone has come across this situation, please share the solution.
    Thanks & Regards,

    Hi
Is your enterprise is configured to a Java Active Directory?
    Then there can bemultiple causes:
    - The Java and the Central Management Server (CMS) are using encryption types that do not match.
    - The Service Principal Name in the CMC is incorrect
Then to resolve this perform the following steps:
    - In the Central Configuration Manager, double-click the CMS, and note the service account used.
    - In Windows Domain users and computers, go to account properties for the CMS service account.
    - Select Use DES encryption types for this account. In large AD deployments this change can take time to propagate.
    - Login to the CMC and verify (Authentication -> Active Directory -> Service Principal Name) is in the format BOBJCentralMS/HOSTNAME.DOMAIN.COM
    - Restart the CMS server and log on.
In a clustered CMS environment ensure that all CMS's are running under the same domain account.
    Hope this helps!!!

  • Is it possible to switch from Office 365 online user management to Active Directory after Exchange online migration?

If we utilize the Cutover method to migrate from on-premise Exchange (2007) to Office 365, which to my understanding will hand over user management/authentication to Office 365 online during the process, is possible to later switch from Office 365 user management
to Active Directory (synced to a future local domain, or even possibly via AD federation single sign-on)? If so, how difficult is this process and is there any documentation available?
Asking this because the organization  I'm working for plans to upgrade (re-do actually) its entire infrastructure. There will be a completely brand new domain/AD set up that's totally unrelated to the old one. At the same time, we also plan to migrate
all emails (previously hosted locally on Exchange 2007) to Office 365 and get rid of local exchange. Now because we will set up new domain, we do not want to carry over the older AD to the cloud, hence we will not use the "Staged Migration".
So the plan is to to use "Cutover" migration first, which means all authentications will become Office 365 managed. That's fine for now. But later, after we set up our new domain and AD controller etc, we'd like to have Exchange Online switch back
to syncing with our new on-premise AD. We'd also like to consider the AD Federation Services if it's not too complicated to set up.
Your advice on this would be greatly appreciated!

In principle, you cannot sync back from the cloud AD to the on-prem, yet. But you can take advantage of the soft-matching mechanism once you have the new AD in place:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2641663
Be careful though, as the moment you turn on Dirsync, all the matching users in the cloud will have their attributes overwritten. A very good idea is to do an 'export' of the cloud AD first, using the WAAD module for PowerShell and the Get-MsolUser cmdlets,
which you can then use to compare or import data in the new on-prem AD. Some links:

  • SCOM 2007 cross-forest clients migration

Hello to all. I'm preparing a cross-forest migration from source domain domain1.a.com to target domain domain2.b.com .
Source domain has hundreds of servers (windows 2003 and windows 2008). All source DCs are Windows 2003. Source domain already has SCOM 2007 R2 deployed on its member servers and on others located on another source domains.
As cross-forest migration will run just for domain1.a.com I need to know:
1- Is possible to migrate member servers from source-->target and keep source SCOM 2007 R3 monitoring the already migrated member server?
2-If positive, what need to be done in advance (before any member server migration) and after each member server migration?
3-If target forest already have a SCOM 2007 R2 environment, what should need to be done so migrated member servers would be monitored on this target SCOM 2007 R2 (that has nothing to do with the source one) ?
       Thanks in advance, EEOC.

    1. It is possible.
    2. You will have to install certificates in the environment and either manag the agents through a gateway (minimal number of certs) or by installing certs on the agents directly.
    3. Just uninstall the agents and reinstall by the target SCOM 2007 R2 console.

  • Hou to do intra-forest domain migration of enterprise sub-ordinate CA

    Hi,
We have a parent-child multi domain AD environment . The root CA is placed in parent domain (Domain-A) and one enterprise sub-CA & one enterprise NDES CA in child domain (Domain-B). We have other child domains as well ( Domain-C,D,E). Now we are consolidating
all child domains and migrating all resources to root domain-A. We already have finished all users/computers/servers migration. now need to migrate the CAs from child domain-B to parent domain-A. Can anyone help me with the migration process and what all checklist
I have to follow ? Also, is there any impact to the CA certificate and other the enrolled certificates, because the domain name of the CA will change.
AD is on windows 2008 R2 STD & CAs are on Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise OS.
    Thank you in advance.

    1.  First of all it is possible.
    2. Migrate the CA server during off-business Hrs.
    3. CA server name can be change but not the CA name itself.
    4. You need enterprise admin for that.
    5. Join your new CA server into the Root domain & follow the steps.
    Sl.
    Steps
     1
Back up the CA templates list (required only for enterprise CAs).
     2
Record the CA's CSP and signature algorithm
     3
Publish a CRL with an extended validity period.

  • Authentication against Active Directory Forest

    Hello Everyone,
I am new to JNDI programming and would appreciate any help in the following problem.
I am planning to write a program using JNDI APIs to authenticate users against an Active Directory (AD) forest.
Target AD forest contains multiple domains with two-way transitive trust between them. There are several users created in each of these domains.
I would like to know what should be the general approach for authenticating users against such a topology.
I have a working program which uses JNDI APIs to authenticate users against single Domain.
A sample topology would contain domains like these.
    - abc.corp.net
    - xyy.corp.net
    - pqr.xyz.corp.net
    - hrdev.xyz.corp.net
    - lmn.corp.net
Thanks in advance for any help

  • Provision Search in SharePoint Foundation 2013 without Domain Controller / Active Directory - Domain accounts

    Hi,
I have successfully setup SharePoint Foundation 2013 as single server farm with SQL Server Standard database in a DMZ environment using local accounts since DMZ doesn't have an Active Directory and hence Domain accounts using powershell as described
    in https://theblobfarm.wordpress.com/2012/12/03/installing-sharepoint-2013-without-a-domain-controller
When I run Farm configuration wizard to provision search service application, I get an error:
ERROR: "The service application(s) for the service "Search Service Application" could not be provisioned because of the following error: I/O error occurred."
The log file logged the details of this error as:
ERROR: "Failed to create file share Analytics_e441aa1c-1a8d-4f0a-a079-58b499eb4c50 at D:\SharePoint Search\Office Server\Analytics_e441aa1c-1a8d-4f0a-a079-58b499eb4c50 (System.ArgumentException: The SDDL string contains an invalid sid or a sid
    that cannot be translated."
After investigation, I found that potentially the error could be because the timer service is trying to setup a network share for analytics component (as part of provisioning search). It is trying to setup that share with a domain account that happens to
be a local user instead in this case and fails with error “System.ArgumentException: The SDDL string contains an invalid sid or a sid that cannot be translated”.
I got some pointer from the below thread
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/c8e93984-f4e5-46da-8e8a-c5c79ea1ff62/error-creating-search-service-application-on-sharepoint-foundation-with-local-account?forum=sharepointadmin
However, the above thread doesn't state that the solution worked.
I have tried creating share manually for Analytics_<Guid> folder but it doesn't work since every time farm configuration wizards is run it creates a new Analytics_<Guid> folder.
Since, I have setup SharePoint Foundation 2013 on a production environment I cannot test and trial various solutions.
Can some please guide me on how to successfully provision search for SharePoint Foundation 2013 setup as a single server farm with SQL Server Standard database in a DMZ environment using local accounts (without Active Directory - domain accounts).
    Thanks in advance.
    Himanshu

Microsoft documentation doesn't always specifically call out all products (Project Server isn't there, either). But it does apply. You'll need to stand up at least one Domain Controller, or allow port access back to a DC.
Preferably, set up SharePoint on the internal network and use a reverse proxy (which will terminate client connections at the reverse proxy) present in the DMZ.

  • Creating active directory users with dscl

Our mac workstations (OSX 10.8) are bound to a 2008 Active Directory server.  We are attempting to use some existing dscl scripts on the mac client computer to create Active directory users.  We can successfully read and change AD attributes of an existing user with dscl, but creating new users or new attributes for an existing user gives us an error.  Here are some examples.
SUCCESSFUL READ OF AD USER ATTRIBUTE:
    root# dscl -u administrator  "/Active Directory/CXAD/All Domains" -read /Users/jholmes SMBHomeDrive
    Password:
    SMBHomeDrive: H:
    root#
SUCCESSFUL DELETE OF ABOVE USER ATTRIBUTE
    root# dscl -u administrator  "/Active Directory/CXAD/All Domains" -delete /Users/jholmes SMBHomeDrive
    Password:
    root#
FAILED ATTEMPT AT RE-CREATING THE DELETED ATTRIBUTE
    root# dscl -u administrator "/Active Directory/CXAD/All Domains" -create /Users/jholmes SMBHomeDrive
    Password:
    <main> attribute status: eDSInvalidRecordType
    <dscl_cmd> DS Error: -14130 (eDSInvalidRecordType)
    root#
The same error occurs when attempting to create a new user.  Any ideas?  Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

In the end I could not find them; account info is ONLY stored locally in Open Directory when they have mobile accounts.
However, I found I could migrate their user directories in Terminal via ditto ( I connected the old macs via Firewire Target mode) , and when they log in all their stuff and settings are there.
the command is: ditto /Volumes/<old mac hard drive>/Users/<username> /Users/<username>

  • Upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite breaks Active Directory. Is there a fix / work-around?

I work for an organization that uses Active Directory  (Windows Server 2008, I believe) for user account management and also for managing printer shares. Until Yosemite, OS X worked brilliantly with AD and our user accounts and machines were bound easily and reliably. When any user upgrades to Yosemite, the process occurs without a hitch except that AD connectivity breaks.
The color indicator for Network Account Server in Users & Groups is green, indicating that believes the connection to the directory server is OK. If you select "Edit" for the directory configuration - everything looks as it did before. However, if one attempts to access the Active Directory tree using Directory Utility it displays the error "Connection failed to node '/Active Directory/COMPANY/All Domains'. If one uses the command line utility 'dscl' to attempt to list AD entries, you also get errors:
    > ls Active\ Directory/COMPANY
    All Domains
    > ls Active\ Directory/COMPANY/All\ Domains
    ls: Invalid Path
    <dscl_cmd> DS Error: -14009 (eDSUnknownNodeName)
If I go to add a printer, I can no longer retrieve the printer list from the domain.
I have checked, and there DNS search domains are correctly configured and fully configured properly on all the computers involved. They can all ping the AD servers, and if I used dig to check for SRV records for LDAP (_ldap._tcp.directory.company.com), they are correct.
Does anyone have an idea what's going on? What's changed and how to fix it?

We spent over a month trying to find a fix for this issue, and even your fix didn't work.
Same as you we have forest AD.LOCAL and domain as domain.com.
We are sure the DNS settings are fine, the green light is on and it even authenticate as it said my password will expire in X days. But it never pass the loading login screen.
    Can anyone assist please?
    Thanks.

  • Active directory, SSGD and password change

Hi everybody, we have some problems with SSGD, active directory and password change
    Scenario:
    We have 2 different perfectly working Active directory called "Gruppo" and "Eracle";
    We have 2 different tarantella installations called "Sgd" and "Tlv";
Sgd servers are working servers and users authenticate against Eracle, used by our customer.
We made 2 basic different test with Tlv:
    1. we configure Tlv to authenticate users against Gruppo (that is our real need)---> we can't change pasword using kpasswd or ttakpasswd
    2. we configure Tlv to authenticate users against Eracle ---> everything was ok
There are NO DIFFERENCE beetween Sgd and Tlv, they have same configuration, same krb5.conf etc..
There is ONE DIFFERENCE beetween Eracle and Gruppo:
    Eracle Active Directory's properties:
Domain functional level: Windows 2000 mixed
    Forest functional level: Windows 2000
    Gruppo Active Directory's properties:
Domain functional level: Windows 2000 native
    Forest functional level: Windows 2000
SSGD documentation doesn't speak about different Active Directory properties. The SSGD documentation says that you can authenticate users against Active directory, so, IT HAS TO WORK even if the domain functional level of active directory is different.
    Can someone help us^Hi Simon
I'll try again to explain you our problem, because it seems that I wasn't so clear.

    Added question.

    Thanks,

  • Home folder in active directory

    Hello,
My environment is a Microsoft Active Directory 2008 SP2 domain environment. Our users home drives are hosted on a Windows server. Upon login on a Mac workstation, the user's home drive should be mapped automatically and appears on the dock.
I'm working with Mac OS x 10.6.8 on the machine. The home drives start mounting on the dock as a "?" icon and aren't accessible. I can create a manual mapping of the shared network folder and that works fine, but it's the automatic mapping done by Active Directory that isn't working properly and I'm frankly stumped at the moment.
Does someone can help me ?
    Thank you,
    Olviier

Hello, no experience with AD, but once you manually map the Shared Network folder, try dragging that to the right side of the dock between Applications & Trash.
