Active N/Bridge cooler with k8n plat w/9800+vga silancer

I need an active cooler for my north bridge before I oc anymore.  Thinking i might just go get a copper van iceberg is says the hight is 14mm so it should be allright.
But my vga silencer is in the way, will i be able to fit an active cooler on there and keep my vga? Is anyone running this combination?

yup, it'd have to fit.  NB heatsinks are generally universal.

sure thing   I'll actually give you the accurate measurements from the box: 51.2 x 59 x 14.2 mm.  So the thickness is 14.2mm.

  • No POST with K8N Plat 2

I have a K8N Platinum 2 with an Athlon 64 3500 socket 939 and I suspect that I am dealing with an RAM issue.  When I power the PC on, it does not POST and the D-Bracket shows:
     Memory Detection Test
    - Testing onboard memory size. The D-LED will hang if the memory module is damaged or not installed properly
I have not tried to reset the CMOS via the jumper yet but I may try that today (was up till 3am trying to figure this out).
I suspect that the RAM I am using is the culprit but I wanted to see if anyone else was familiar with this issue or has this RAM installed successfully (CORSAIR 184-Pin 1GB ECC REG DDR PC-3200, Model CM72SD1024RLP-3200):
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-145-310&depa=1
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

It was the Corsair RAM.  I went to my local Best Buy and bought a cheap 256mb to test with and it POSTed no problem.  I guess I will be returning the Corsair RAM for either their XMS or for some OCZ.

  • Success with K8N Neo Plat + ATI 9800Pro?

I'm trying to decide on whether to go with the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB or the GeForce 6800nu. But I've read a lot of places where people have had problems combining the MSI K8N Neo Platinum and the Radeon 9800 Pro cards together... lots of blue screening or choppiness when playing games like FarCry or other heavy hitters. So that's why I'm considering the GeForce card instead, but I'd really like to stick with the ATI if possible.
So, if you have a combination of that mobo and gfx card, please post the results of your success or problems (and why) along with your system specs.
    Thanks in advance!

Since my power upgrade to a Tagan 480W, I haven't had any problems anymore! With the new ATi catalyst 4.9 drivers I reached 6005 3DMarks (2003 build 340) yesterday. Without any OC-ing, I think that's great! Before the Tagan psu I had some drops to 3700 3dmarks, so make sure you get a psu with at least 24amps or more on the +12V rail for this kind of system!
No choppiness in games either, in fact they (Farcry, Colin Mcrae, CoD, Doom3 since 4.9 drvs etc etc) all look great!
I can really recommend the ATi9800Pro 128 MB + MSI Neo plat. + a AMD64 CPU as lons as you buy a decent psu with it! I mean the ATi9800 Pro has a great price / performance these days

  • [AMD] Highest clock speed with K8N Neo Plat + A64 3200+ Newcastle?

Who owns the exact setup (ram+cpu+mobo) as me and what is the clock speed you all achieved? Mine can only go till 220x11, Ram at 220mhz,
    (2.4ghz, DDR440)?

The place I bought my parts from were selling similar ready-built systems with K8N and Geil Value Ram (not Golden) so I thought it would have been fine also (same Antec case and PSU)...
300W and 10A is pretty low for a PSU (mine's only 350W and 16A though) - but your problem sounds very much like my original problem (although worse).
Take a look at Ram that does not work well with MSI K8N:

angusmcchris: Kingston Value RAM doesn't work so hot. Would have saved me a weekend's worth of horror if I had found this thread earlier.  I had to lower the RAM speed down to 166MHz to get it to work, and now its time to go to bed.

I couldnt install any OS. i got the blue screen million times and many different ones. Even linux failed to install until i slowed it down to 166 in the BIOS then everything worked fine. Then i wanted to see if i had a defective motherboard or ram card so i bought a PNY DDR 400 512MB ram stik pulged in at 200 and it worked perfectly.
Also look at Ram that works well with MSI K8N for good, compatible RAM...
I can't recommend Crucial Ballistix enough: 2-2-2-8 timings @ 1T on AUTO settings. Never had a single glitch with hours and hours of Doom3, Half Life2, etc...

  • "Does Bridge come with Photoshop if I buy the CC single app?"

Question from a Customer…"Does Bridge come with Photoshop if I buy the CC single app?"

Actually whether you consider the Suite a unified concept or not, if you are using a variety of Adobe products Bridge does the job well. Here's a great testimonial of what it does according to one user:
Bridge is the coordinating hub of the Creative Suite. Synchronizing color management settings for all suite programs is done from Bridge, and can only be done from Bridge, to take one important use.
Bridge displays actual thumbnails of many more file types than Finder or Explorer. It also allows instant play of sound or video files more readily than the native OS file managers.
Bridge allows direct access to file metadata, to embed copyright information and keywords where appropriate (e.g., for corporate logo vector and raster files). It also displays the fonts used in an InDesign file, the swatches in an INDD or AI and the output plates (including spot color plates) they use.
When managing the assets for a design project, Bridge allows quick and simple sorting, rating and custom labeling (with color flash indications) of assets. I can rate images according to whether they are rejects, possibles, for review by client, or approved. The filters built into Bridge allow instant isolation of only the approved images or designs in a folder, only the rejects (for deletion) or only files with certain ratings, no matter how many files it contains. It recognizes aspect ratios, so if I only need a landscape or a 16:9 image in a folder of hundreds of images, I turn off the aspect ratios I don't need.
Once filtered, the remaining visible files can be selected and copied, moved, or deleted without affecting the rest of the contents of a folder.
Collections are a massively useful feature. One of my clients is a performing arts center, and in a season we turn out dozens of ads, flyers, brochures, web banners, playbills, billboards and other collateral using the same assets over and over. These assets are organized by artist and/or show on disk, but I set up each season's repeating assets as a Collection in Bridge, so that I just have to open the collection and drag and drop these assets into new INDD, AI, PSD, HTML (in Dreamweaver), FLA or AE projects without having to navigate from folder to folder picking up individual files.
Bridge's Favorites is another place I stack frequently-accessed folders, such as stock photography, backgrounds, and top-level folders for active projects.
Assets can be divided into subfolders, but a quick toggle of "Show items from subfolders" exposes all of the assets in a single view while maintaining their organization. I will typically keep AIs, PSDs, EPSs, stock photography and client images in separate subfolders within a project. When I'm ready to start pulling assets into an InDesign layout, I toggle this on and simply drag what I need into the layout.
Bridge comes with Adobe Camera Raw built in, which is many times faster than using Photoshop to adjust jpegs or tiffs for things like tonal range, white balance, cropping, spotting and sharpening, and is non-destructive.
One tremendously useful Bridge function for InDesign CS5+ users is the "Show linked files" feature, which opens all the linked files in a layout into a single view, regardless of where they are physically located. I often use this when doing alternative layouts from a client-approved mockup for a campaign, to be certain the same assets are used in each piece, or when creating a motion graphic or interactive piece for the campaign in After Effects or Flash.
The batch and image processing scripts built into Bridge automate things like creating web-ready small jpegs from multiple images, renaming large numbers of files in place or by copying to an alternative location, creating sets of PSD, png, jpeg or other file types from an assortment of image files, and so on.
Bridge is so much a part of my daily workflow that on my main workstation I have one monitor dedicated to it almost 100%. Bridge just sits open 24/7, ready for use. I would run at half speed without it, no question.
Not bad for an old file browser.

  • Best BIOS setting for MSI K8N Plat + AMD 3000+ Venice + Geil Value RAM

    Hi all,
Which BIOS settings would you recommend for this combination:
    MSI K8N Plat
    3000+ Venice core
    2 x 512 MB GEIL value RAM
I have NorthQ Giant UFO cooler attached to CPU. I would like to have as fast system as possible but remain on the safe side - a 100% stable system.... I know default would be safe enough but wouldn't use the potential of the CPU, I gues....
    BR, Jens

If you want SSE3 support and you do not overclock, Bios 1.4 is the only one officially available (1.41beta is not official).
Try to upgrade to 1.4 and see it for yourself, do the upgrade with floppy in DOS so that you can save your old Bios.
I would rather wait till mid June when a less troublesome new bios is suppose to be availabe for NEO4 MBs.

  • Passive chipset cooling on K8N Neo2 Platinum?

    Hi,
I would like to hear from anyone with experience from replacing the active MSI HS on a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum with a passive one, Zalman NB47J for example?
    - Does the Zalman NB47J fit or is there another HS better suited?
    - Are there problems with the VGA card since the AGP slot is so close?
    - Heat problems. Would you recommend passive chipset cooling on K8N Neo2 Platinum?
I am not an overclocker but would like my system to be quiet.
    Cheers
    About to build:
    Fortron PSU 350W FSP350-60PN
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
    AMD64 Winchester 3000+
    Thermalright XP-90
    Powercolor 9800 PRO

    Baskerville,
No problem mounting the Zalman NB47J
and no heatproblems for me so far ( with some good chassi airflow / ventilation )
The problem is the limited space between the cooler and the Graphic card.
I had to bend a couple of the zalman fins, to be able to mount my 6600GT card.
If not- the Grahpic card components hits the Zalman cooler.
It may work with some other passive cooler that´s lower then the zalman model.

In Adobe Bridge, when I try to open my camera raws, I get a pop up stating"Bridges parent application is not active.  Bridge requires that a qualifying product has been launced at least once to enable this feature."  What the heck?  I have a PC and haven't had problems before.. I have adobe cloud and pay my monthly bill...

Have you opened Photoshop or any other Adobe app that Bridge works with?  You need to do this if you've upgraded PS or just signed up for CC.

  • MSI X58 boards bad chipset cooling - with proof and fix proposed for high IOH

    Hello,
First of all I like MSI boards this is not an anti marketing thread. I own one and with a FIX I don't regret buying it.
I will go straight to the point, the cooling of chipsets on the MSI Eclipse/PRO is totally disastrous. Here is the proof :
Since we see this problem all around, and never "good" response from tech support, here it is - in color. You can't deny it.
I will stay with constructive remarks - the TIM or thermal paste violet is dry and hard as rock ! The bolts are not strong enough also, and doesn't center the heatsink firmly on the north bridge. So if for everyone with high temps of IOH this is why. Please stop telling us that from Intel spec it is OK since it's specified to go up to 100°C. Mine was about >85°C and after a replacement it is under 50°C. Heat causes instabilities and long term wear damage to any chip.
It is a problem of engineering. Bad TIM was selected. MSI will not admit it since it will cost too much to take back all theese boards.
Heat dissipation is so bad as if there were no heatsink on the chip.
Nothing is perfect, if it was MSI would send me a free tube of MX2
MSI Eclipse SLI FIX - will work for other models certainly
    Needed :
Thermal Paste - Arctic Cooling MX2 (Non conductive, long run, one of the best)
    Optional :
    Heatsink - Thermalright HR-05 / IFX
    Tighter bolts, plastic screws.
    How to:
-You need to take off the heatsink that cover both northbridge aka IOH and southbridge.
-The heatsink "DrMOS" over VRMs doesn't get that hot. The TIM on it is like straps and doesn't really require replacement.
If you don't have tighter bolts or screws, you can use existing and add some rings on it to heighten the pressure that will need the heatsink. Warning : If you use metal screws be sure to use a spring or it may do serious damage to the chip.
-Apply a small amount but enough of thermal paste to cover the violet rectangle of both heatsinks. Replace them on the board.
How to (with heatsink replacement) :
Your IOH will go down 40°C. Yes you've read right.
-With this method either you need A) to loose one part of the heatsink, B) or loose two SATA ports and will not be able to use SLI with long cards but for majority of people it will be fine and provide tremendous cooling performance to south bridge also. You can also buy a second heatsink if you wish to keep original untouched but I couldn't find any that would suits the board dimensions or provide improvements for the southbridge.
A)If you don't care about the original heatsink, you will need to cut the two heatpipes. Cut it near the southbridge. It doesn't need high cooling as IOH. Apply thermal paste to it and install the new Thermalright heatsink on the northbridge chipset.
B)You will need to bend the heatsink ! It seems extreme but well works in fact. Bend it towards you and try doing it gentle so it is exactly at 90° angle :
-Before installing it, clean the small heatsink of the old violet "thermal paste". Apply the new thermal paste on the chipset. Now we can install the heatsink but upside down. It seems extreme again but it exactly fits. It won't apply weight pressure on the board since it touch the plastic IDE connector. Warning : be sure, absolutely sure that the heatsink doesn't touch any electrical components.
-Mount the Thermalright IFX and your done.
Here are picture of the final board, and with a mounted system :
(Clic on pics if you need high resolution picture)
The case is an Antec 1200. With modified +5V voltage on fans and with lowspeed enermax fan on processor it is whisper quiet.
Temperatures with overclocked BCLK at 175 MHz :
    Idle/Load : IOH : 45°C / 50°C
    Idle/Load : System : 35°C / 39°C
    Idle/Load : CPU avg : 38°C / 67°C
Now this board is a jewel - impressive low power consumption, very high overclocking capability, stability.
Please MSI, fix your TIM and retention system. Maybe for the new eclipse will it be good ?
I hope this thread has cleared some questions and helped.

hi guys , just an add on to evr999 thread, ive also now changed both n/s bridge heatsinks, with excellant results some pictures for you all to look at.

  • Ace module in bridged mode with client nat

Could someone confirm whatever a NAT is supported for ACE-20 module, please?
Let me to explain technical details.
I do need to convert working CSM(SLB) config to ACE configuration and I am not quite sure
if the configuration below is correct. ACE module should be configured in bridge mode with two
vlans - vlan 36 (client) and vlan 436 (server) - bridged with interface bvi 36.
NAT on ACE configurad as "nat dynamic 1025 vlan 436" into corresponding
    "policy-map type loadbalance"
Could you check two parts of configs and advise me if the ACE config is
properly converted from CSM and will be working in the same way (especialy for NAT).

    Hello F.Makarenko-
You will want to use PAT while you do nat, so change the natpool configuration to this:
       nat-pool 1025 10.36.3.100 10.36.3.100 netmask 255.255.255.0 pat
You also need to apply the nat like this:
    policy-map multi-match IFVLAN36-POLICY
    class WEBMAIL-80
        appl-parameter http advanced-options HTTP_ADV_OPT
        loadbalance policy WEBMAIL-80
        loadbalance vip inservice
        loadbalance vip icmp-reply active
        nat dynamic 1025 vlan 436
      class WEBMAIL-443
        appl-parameter http advanced-options HTTP_ADV_OPT
        loadbalance policy WEBMAIL-443
        loadbalance vip inservice
        loadbalance vip icmp-reply active
        nat dynamic 1025 vlan 436
If you are going to build out a lot of classes, you can instead do source nat like this:
    policy-map multi-match IFVLAN36-POLICY
    class WEBMAIL-80
        appl-parameter http advanced-options HTTP_ADV_OPT
        loadbalance policy WEBMAIL-80
        loadbalance vip inservice
        loadbalance vip icmp-reply active
    class WEBMAIL-443
        appl-parameter http advanced-options HTTP_ADV_OPT
        loadbalance policy WEBMAIL-443
        loadbalance vip inservice
        loadbalance vip icmp-reply active
    class class-default
        nat dynamic 1025 vlan 436

  • Beans - Active-x Bridge - Problems!

    Hi,
I developed an ip address bean based on JTextField (JDK 1.3.1_02), successfully packaged it as an active-x control using the packager and instructions in the active-x bridge tutorial.
The control has all sorts of problems under visual basic: to name a few:
    1. The caret seems to disappear when the control receives focus
    2. The tooltips dont seem to show up.
    3. The focus lost event does not seem to fire in the control.
Is it worth for me to trace these issues or is the activex bridge not really practically used by anybody ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Vishy

    Vishy,
Did you by any change find a solution to your ActiveX Bridge problem, I'm stuck with the same shit..
    Thanks,
    Harvey
P.S. Maybe nobody works with this technology except maybe none-visual components?

  • Closing Bridge CC with Photoshop CC

Why doesn't Bridge CC close with Photoshop CC as Bridge closes with Photoshop CS6?  When I close Photoshop CC I now have to also close Bridge CC - just another steip but I'd like it to close automatically with Photoshop CC.  Thanks

To explain a bit more because I think you are confusing some things: PS CS6 uses Bridge CS6 and PSCC uses Bridge CC. Bridge is version specific and uses dedicated start up scripts per version.
In CS5 (I believe, can't check myself) there was an option bar with a bridge icon to start Bridge from PS. The command 'Browse in Bridge' in PS file menu has been there as long as I can remember. It either switches to the Bridge application itself or if it was not active already this starts Bridge also.
While you can have multiple versions of Bridge installed on your systems you can have only version active and open at the time. Yet you are able to have both PSCS6 and PSCC open and working as you can with other Adobe apps like LR (e.g. both LR4 and LR5 can open and active at the same time) yet Bridge allows you to have only one version open.
I don't know why this is (can't think of a valid reason other then 'as designed') but it is a fact. You can try your self, have Bridge CC open and try to start BridgeCS6, the focus switches to the already open Bridge CC
MiniBridge is a panel in PS designed for a shortcut to Bridge itself so you don't need to switch between applications to reach your content. However the panel only works when Bridge itself is also active. MInd you, CS6 connects with BridgeCS6 and so on.
It works more or less like the other panels, you can change its size and location (dock it to others or use it floating) like you can with panels like layers, history etc. You can also create your own workspace with or without the MB panel. Like other panels you can select it in the PS menu Window, only it is under the submenu 'extensions'.
Mini Bridge could be a great feature but they screwed it in CS5 and beyond, it is hard to use nowadays (only as a floating panel you can have multiple rows and columns for the thumbs to name an important flaw). If you want to use the combination of LR, Bridge and PS for your own reasons then I would suggest to start with LR and export those files to a particular folder.
Then open Bridge to point it to this folder and take a few moments to let Bridge cache its content. Meanwhile create a collection of those files (select them all, click on the new collection button in the collection panel and name it properly.
Then in PS open MB panel and choose collections and select your newly saved collection name. just my 2 cts btw

Best BIOS setting for MSI K8N Plat + AMD 3000+ Venice + Geil Value RAM

If you want SSE3 support and you do not overclock, Bios 1.4 is the only one officially available (1.41beta is not official).
Try to upgrade to 1.4 and see it for yourself, do the upgrade with floppy in DOS so that you can save your old Bios.
I would rather wait till mid June when a less troublesome new bios is suppose to be availabe for NEO4 MBs.

  • MSI K8N Plat SLI Audio Problems

i just built my system and i am wondering what to do about the onboard audio. i have a old set of speakers from gateway that include a subwoofer and 2 front speakers that are digital i believe. i plug them into the yellow spdif out coaxial hole  (speaker plug dosent go in all the way) and i would get a lot of crackling and distortion so i took it out, i tried all teh other onboard audio and nothing works. i checked the digital output only option and unchecked it and nothing changes. now when i plug teh speakers in nothing works no sounds nothing. anybody else have these issues? im thinking about buying a sound card what do you guys think? ithough the soundblaster was supposed to be something great whats up with this? ive read a lot of issues regarding the onboard sound but cant seem to find ananswer.

The "distortion" as you describe it is static interference that goes through to the amplifier, due to the fact that you do not have a correct connection. If the connector does not fit, do not try to force it.
I would leave the case connectors unconnected for the moment, until you get sound through the spdif out. What type of connector is it to your speakers?
you are correct sir! i did some more research with different keywords after i posted my last post and realized that i needed a 1/8" stereo to RCA converter, so i hopped over to radio shack and purchased the little connector for 4 bucks and plugeed it in and walla. Thanks for the help though.
also to the guy with the link to the front case connections, thanks for the suggestion, i had all of my audio ports connected so that wasnt an issue, but thanks for pointing that out.
