Active window switches to finder

I can be in any application eg:mail or typing this post on the web site and while typing the my cursor will disappear and the active window will change to the desktop. I don't have to be doing anything, I could be just reading a page in any application or site and it changes. It's very frustrating.
Thanks

i will tell you want i did
I went to the library/preferences and i deleted com.apple.finder.plist.. but it didnt really worked, somehow my pc was recreating this file.. Finally i devided to delete everything and restart immediately... it worked, my you lose all your settings.. everything is working fine but all the setting of your mac turn to the manufacter original setting.. that said , if you do it, your dock is gonna be as it was when you bought your mac. and of course any other setting on other programs..

  • Why does active window frequently switch to finder?

This has been happening for a little while. It's really weird, I could be in any application and while I'm doing something all of a sudden my active window is now inactive and the finder is active. Mostly, it seems to be happening in email, but also safari, and others...
    Any idea?
    Thanks,
    Bob

Not that then. If you go into System Preferences/Exposé & Spaces have you got a mouse button assigned to Show Desktop in Exposé? Is Spaces enabled and have you got a shortcut enabled in there that you might be accidentally using?

  • Why does Spaces automatically switch away from my active window?

I'm having the weirdest problem. As of a few days ago, whenever I use an app in full screen mode, this thing happens: after about ten or twenty seconds, the app will switch away from my active window, and show the desktop. What's also weird about it is that there's no switch away from the app - in the menu bar (which was previously hidden, because I was in full screen mode), it'll show that whatever program I was using (ie, Chrome), not Finder. Again, to be clear: the window is switched out of view, and I can see my desktop, but the app I was using is still active.
This problem only happens in full screen mode, and seems to be happening across the board with all the apps I regularly use (iCal, Word, Chrome, Excel, to name a few).
    Thanks for the help.

This just started for me today and I have no idea what's causing it.  I almost always have a full-screen Chrome space running and it worked fine for me for as long as I've had this machine, but suddenly for no reason it wants to do this autoswitch thing.  It is incredibly frustrating even if it is a simple swipe to get the screen to go back across it makes watching a video or reading a page nigh impossible.  Is there a solution for this at all or even a workaround?

  • I have a dual monitor setup.  When I paste develop settings from one image to another, Lightroom switches the active window.

Strange problem.  Lightroom 5.5.  Windows 8.1. Dual monitor setup.
I'm processing a large batch of photos.  I have Monitor #1 set as my main develop window, with Monitor #2 set only to display a larger version of the image I'm working with. If I copy the develop settings off of one image and try to paste them onto another image, Lightroom will switch from Monitor #1 to Monitor #2 as the main develop window, and will not display anything on Monitor #1.
If I then try to paste develop settings onto another image on Monitor #2, LR will then display a larger version of the image I'm working with on Monitor #1.
To work the way I want to, I have to continually drag my develop window back to Monitor #1 every time I try to paste develop settings onto a new image. How can I make this stop?

I just tried what I think you’re saying you’re doing and I don’t have the problem with LR 5.5 on Windows 7 SP 2.
Does the same thing happen whether you use the key shortcuts vs the Settings / Copy/Paste options on the menu?
I ask this because if you’re using the keyboard shortcuts, maybe you have some display-manager program that has bound itself to the Ctrl-Shift-V (paste settings) to the function of move-to-other-monitor which would do at least part of what you describe.
You can also test this theory by doing a Ctrl-Shift-V with an application other than LR as the active window and see if it moves.  I suppose Ctrl-Shift-C might also play into it so try both of these hot-key combinations with a program that isn’t LR.
If none of this sheds any light on the situation, then give a more detailed description of the low-level functions you’re doing to accomplish the copy-paste of settings, so someone else could replicate the steps exactly.
    Specific detailed steps, like:
left-click on source photo’s thumbnail in the filmstrip
press Ctrl-Shift-C to copy the settings
    click Check-None
enable the white-balance and calibration checkboxes
    click Ok
left-click on destination photo's thumbnail in the filmstrip
click on Settings / Paste Settings in LR’s menus to paste the settings to the selected photo

I'm also experiencing the same issue.
I've had to reset my password 3 times in the last 3 days.
At first, I couldn't get my email. I sweated it out for 12 hours, reset my password and I was good to go again. 48 hours later, I ran into the same issue. Only problem is, not only do I get the 'Incorrect username or password' on my device, but my iCloud.com login no longer works. so now I can't read my messages on the web OR on my device/computer.
I have went to appleid.apple.com and reset my password there: no luck.

  • Want Finder to start with active windows

Under previous OSX, mac would start at login with two active Finder  windows, on the second display alogside Mail. Mavericks won't do this. Is there a way to have Finder start with one or more active windows? Thanks.

In addition to the previous answer, uncheck the box in System Preferences > General: Close windows when quitting an application..

  • All apps/programs switch to Finder on their own... buggy.

Hello guys and gals... It's a simple but awful problem. No matter what I'm doing on my computer, any program/app I'm using will randomly switch to Finder on (it just happened while I was typing) it's own.
At first I thought I activated a certain key command or was hitting a special area on my mouse. But now that I've experienced this issue for a few days, their is no consistency. My only (just did it again!) observation is that I need to be using the computer... if I'm simply listening to iTunes, it won't switch completely on its own, but if I'm surfing in Firefox or editing in Final Cut, it will switch once an hour up to every minute.
This isn't my Macbook BTW, it's a 11.4.11 G4 tower. (43GB HD space left) and I only have a few apps at a time open.
    Thanks for reading!

    Hi Monty,
It's likely some 3rd Party APP that got broken by the recent QT or Security update.
Stuffit AVR has been a big one, if you have that use the Pref Pane to turn it off, but others have been implicated too. Check System Preferences for a Stuffit Pref Pane and disable AVR.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it is some 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Microsoft Word consistently becomes active window when clicking between dual screens and programs

    13" MBP
    2.3 ghz i5
    8GB Ram
    Running 10.9.2
    Microsoft Word 2011
Dual screens with amazon Mini Display to VGA adapter
When I am running word between an external monitor and my MBP, Microsoft word always interrupts any clicks between programs and between screens to become the active window. This is especially annoying when I am trying to navigate between MacMail and Chrome, or any other programs.
The problem doesn't exist when I click between programs on the MBP, but only when I select windows between the two screens. Or programs on the external monitor.
Word is up to date, as is my MBP.
Please don't punt me to Microsoft, they're the worst!
    Thanks!

There is a workaround for this problem, which was posted by Highestwater on the Microsoft Community thread for this bug and worked for me as well:
    Go to
System Preferences > Mission Control >
and UN-check the box labeled "Displays have separate Spaces" (see image below)
The original poster on this thread may already be aware of this workaround, because he/she mentioned that the "separate Spaces" option is checked. But if you can live without the extra Mavericks dual display features (like going full screen in 1 display only, switching spaces independently on each display, and having a menu bar on each display), then uncheck this option and the "stealing focus" bug seems to disappear. For me the bug is so annoying that it's worth it to lose the extra features. Just yesterday I closed a Word document I was working on by mistake because I clicked on a Finder window on my other display and immediately pressed command-w to close it, without realizing that the focus had switched to my word document which closed instead. It was saved, but this sort of stuff interrupted my work enough to be both an annoyance and a time drain.

  • Active Window suddenly drops to background

Besides not being able to switch to an application window on clicking on the application in the dock, (see previous post) i've also had a concurrent issue that seems to make the active window suddently go right to the back window, this seems to be happening in multiple applications - i can be writing an email, and suddenly the window dissapears to the back of the desktop and i have to go find it and make it active again.  The only way that i can stop this from distracting and stopping me from working, is not to have any other windows open!!.
In Safari, if i click on any of the buttons (like bookmarks, top site etc) that also makes the window suddently go back, and i have to find the window again to make it active. its VERY frustrating and making me very unproductive.  has anyone else had this problem? does anyone know a solution on how i can fix this?
i've don repair permissions, i've restarted the machine, i've done FSCK but the problem still persists - cna't wait for the lion update and hope they also give the option of the old Spaces and Expose!
    thanks in Advance.

    Thank you Francois,
It is most closely resembling [Command+H]. but the window still appears, with all other open windows appearing in front of it.
It seemed to be intermitent for me. I closed all apps, and restarted, un-selecting "Re-open windows when logging back in."
For the moment it appears to be stable again, and this has happened before, so will keep you posted. Is there a dump or some other function I should do next time it is happening?
Macbuzzz, are you still experiencing this issue?

  • Why did apple get rid of the activity window in OSX 10.8? That was such a useful feature.

This is BS if activity window is gone for good, so am I. I'm switching to crome.

It's not Activity Window, but if you go to Safari>Extensions and scroll down, you'll find Click to Flash. If you install this, it'll change the native .flv file to an .m4v or .mp4 (something like that). You can then just right click on the video in question and click on the dl button

  • Click on desktop background switch to find is very confusing

If you click the desktop background, the Finder becomes that active app even when there is no Finder windows anywhere on screen to be seen. The menu bar is switched to "Finder" but the user is completely unaware that their world inside their mac has completely changed but the screen look exactly the same to them: the shade of grey change to the active window is just not obvious. The problem is compounded for non-English user: the menu bar look the same to them: it just show "Picasa", "Preview", "Finder" in the app menu, not translated.
Is there anyway to disable click on background switch to Finder?

The Finder is your Desktop. They're one in the same. Sounds like you need to be using Mac OS 9 where all the apps had "application frames". Those were sad times indeed. Kidding, loved OS 9 when it was around.
Seriously though, no. Finder is always running. It's kind of like the visual, tangible link between the user and OS.
Or could you just stop clicking on the background?

  • Slow window switching after Yosemite install.

    Macbook Pro Retina 15" (2012)
Having a problem since Yosemite with window switching, using CMD-W to switch windows.  The switching works, but it's extremely slow.  It's to the point where sometimes I can see a frame of the window come in and then the controls are drawn.  Sad that this machine was so fast with Mavericks.
Weird thing I noticed is it's only when I'm unplugged from my two monitors.  When I'm using the MBP as an actual laptop, it's extremely slow.  (Plugged in or battery, both)  But when I am plugged in to my two monitors (24 inch and 23 inch) I don't have the problem, switching windows is back to normal.
I researched and can't find anything that would cause this.
I only notice one thing weird is discoveryd is always running and at around 15 - 20+ % all the time.  I can't see how that would do it, but I'm at a loss.
    Thanks

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Hiding Mail 5 Activity window

The Mail 5.0 Activity window is acting very strange. With the Activity window visible, when the main Mail 5.0 application is hidden the Activity window remains visible. How can I hide the Activity window without closing it?
Another quirk: When the Mail app is hidden and the Activity window is clicked on, the Finder becomes the active application. This is more annoying than having the Activity window always visible and I would settle for having the Activity window always visible but invoking the Mail parent application upon click.

I've got the same bug, but maybe it's not a bug. Could be the new Mail activity window is more akin to a Help window, which are non-floating windows.
Try this.  Open a program with a help menu, Safari for example. Then open the Help Center by invoking the Help menu.
Switch to a different program (Mail will work) and "Hide Others". You'll see the Help Center window from Safari is visible in Mail.
As for the second 'quirk', I'd suggest the window isn't seen by any application; therefore, it just floats visible to only the eye, unresponsive to a click in any program but Mail.  Also, Expose removes all the windows to the side, but leaves this orphaned Mail activity window.
I asked on a different forum and no one else reported this anomaly.
    So, figured out a cure?

  • Batch won't run unless Illustrator CS3 is active window?

I'm hoping someone can help me out with this as it's driving me nuts. Basically I'm trying to batch an action I made in CS3 to run on about 700 illustrator files.
Everything runs just fine and dandy until I switch from Illustrator to another program (Firefox, photoshop, bridge, anything other than illustrator), once illustrator is no longer the active window, the batch process stops. When I make illustrator the active window again, the batch starts again. This worked perfect in CS2 and I never had this problem until CS3.
This is a huge pain as I can't work on anything else while keeping the batch running in the background.
    Here's the nitty gritty details:
XP SP2, Illustrator CS3, smoking fast machine
Action was created in actions palette to do the following:
Unlock All > Select All > Create Outlines > Convert to Grayscale
Ran the batch via the actions palette, choose "Save and Close" and "log errors to a file".
I've restarted Illustrator, restarted the machine, recreated the action, broke the folder into smaller folders with less files. It's making my Tuesday feel like a Monday.
I've search all over and found nothing. There was one post here on the adobe forums, but it was from October and it never got answered. If you have a solution you will be my hero!
    Thanks!

Yes, I have absolutely seen this! At our office we batch process Illustrator files to JPEG very frequently, and it's a huge nuisance to have Illustrator block the system during the batch processing. Everyone here is on XP SP2 as well, and we all have this issue. In fact, trying to switch in and out of Illustrator while it's batching can cause the application to crash fairly regularly for us.
I can confirm that the Mac version of Illustrator CS3 does *not* have this problem, as I am batch-exporting right now with Illustrator in the background on my Mac. (Mac OS X 10.5.2, Illy 13.0.2)
A fix for this would be most appreciated, Adobe!

  • The Background File Activity Window Is Annoying. Any tips on removing?

So, I just started using Dreamweaver CC after having been on hiatus from the program for nearly a decade. I have to say, most of the things I hated it for, and stopped using it because of, have been corrected. Kudos, Adobe, for fixing what was everyone's least favorite program in the suite.
Anywho, all that said, I am still annoyed on a very VERY regular basis by the program issuing an extremely pesky pop-up window anytime I attempt to Put files to my Remote or Testing server. I took a screenshot of the nasty bugger and have attached it here. The Background File Activity window closes when the Put action results in no errors or warnings. That's fine, but EVERY SINGLE TIME I put an HTML file that has references to external files (**so ya know like ANY HTML FILE EVER**), the window stays up and requires me to take action on closing it. THIS IS EXTREMELY ANNOYING. The error message displayed in the window doesn't even seem to be accurate (- error occurred - Access denied.  The file may not exist locally,  may be open in another program, or there could be a local permission problem), because it DOES put the HTML file in question. Perhaps the worst characteristic of this window is that is floats above everything else on my desktop. That means if I want to do a local>remote sync or just upload a bigger bunch of files, and then jump back into Photoshop to keep working on assets in there, I eventually am interrupted by this window popping up. This thing is worse than my cat trying to lay on my hands when I'm typing.
So, if anyone has any suggestions on how to turn this frustrating dialogue off, I would be very grateful.
My system specs are: Yosemite (Mac OS 10.10.1) and Dreamweaver CC 2014.1 (15.0.0.6947).
    MUCHO DANKES

its not FTP information, the site is defined as Local
    Network. I have a drive
lets say M:\ mapped to \\machine\webroot or whatever and then
    point my DW8 site
    to M:\webroot
It can synchronize all it wants, all day long for all I
    care...... just lose
the focus so I can switch windows??? You don't name something
    'background' file
activity when its in your face and causing nothing to respond
    appropriately in
    the 'foreground' lol.
