Activesync obtains music on device=uses up all memory

I normally add music to an sD card via media player. However when I sync now, music is added to the hard drive on my phone and I have to delete it before my phone will function properly r/t low memory.
I've deleted the music file on my device but it is recreated after syncing.
I've checked my active sync settings to make sure music is not selected.
Not sure why this happens. Using Treo 700wx, windows vista.

Windows Media Player on your PC can sync directly with the device when connected and it may be the culprit. Check it out and see.

• Web browser leakage uses up almost all memory

I consistently find that when using Safari (or Firefox), within a short period of time (sometimes even less than one hour), the browser has taken over nearly all available memory. This happens even when the browser is the only program in use, and when no webpages with extensive audio or video content are open.
Can someone explain to me why this happens -- i.e., why web browsers seem to hog all the memory they can find -- and (more importantly) whether I can take steps to prevent it from happening?
Thanks.
As an example, my current System Memory readings (from Activity Monitor), with only 'Firefox' and 'Activity Monitor' open, are:
Free memory . . . 74.9 MB (but frequently dropping to less than 10 MB)
Wired . . . 228.4 MB
Active . . . 1.20 GB
Inactive . . . 504.5 MB
Used . . . 1.92 GB
VM size . . . 31.99 GB
Page ins . . . 292.1 MB
Page outs . . . 120.6 MB
Swap used . . . 518.7 MB

<<< Which release of Safari are you using? Your original profile suggests you are still on OS X 10.6.3
The most recent release of Safari (5.1.7) for OS X 10.6.8 seems to keep more free RAM available (and thus offers a bit better performance with fewer beachballs) than Safari 5.0.5, the version I used extensively before recently updating to OS X 10.6.8 to get the anti-Flashback security updates. >>>
I'm actually using OS 10.6.7 (not 10.6.3). I'll update to 10.6.8 now that you've made me aware of it (thanks), but I don't see why that will make any difference regarding this particular problem.
I'll also update Safari (I'm back a few revisions on that one), but there too, I don't expect any pleasant surprises. (I don't recall ever seeing a performance improvement from an update.)
My inquiry was primarily directed at the use of the Firefox browser. However, when I've switched (in frustration) to Safari, I've seen negligible difference in performance, or regarding the particular issues I've posted about.
Even you characterized the performance gain as "a bit better." This problem cries out for much more than "a bit."
Thanks for your reply.

unless i'm missing something, i think you got mixed up, this is easy google for walk throughs
i'm assuming this is the new 3tb tc AC or 'tower' shape, if so, its wifi will run circles around your at&t device
unplug the at&t box for a minute and plug it back in
factory reset your tc - unplug it, hold down reset and keep holding while you plug it back in - only release reset when amber light flashes in 10-20s
connect the tc to your at&t box via eth in the wan port, wait 1 minute, open airport utility look in 'other wifi devices' to setup the tc
create a new wifi network (give it a different name than your at&t one) and put the tc in bridge mode (it may do this automatically for you, but you should double check) under the 'network' tab
login to your at&t router and disable wifi on it
add new clients to the new wifi network, and point your Macs to the time machine for backups

I upgraded my iPod Touch 4th Gen yesterday. Now it won't play music, which is the main thing I use it for. Over 11,000 songs [it's a 64GB model] -- will I actually have to restore the device and re-add all that music?
[Music files are still there, and I can play them on my computer directly from the iPod [just one track at a time] but not in the usual way, through headphones.]
On the Summary page of iTunes for the iPod, it shows 50-plus gigabytes of "Other" content and no music, which was not previously the case. I assume this is related to the problem.
I can bring up individual tracks on the iPod and see cover art, but cannot play the music.

iCloud is free, iTunes match is $25 a year.
I had the same problem and when I went to Settings I had 0 songs, even though they were obviously still there since I only had 15GB free on my 64GB device.
I decided to do a complete reset/restore of my 4th gen iPod Touch, Bad move! I've been messing with it for hours, and it simply won't restore--it keeps hanging on a black screen with an Apple logo and a progress bar at about 10%, sometimes it goes completely blank and tries again, with the same result. (I've posted my question/plea for help here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19735862 )
I'm ready to bang my head against the wall! I can put the device in recovery mode, connect to iTunes on my computer, and get it back to the setup screen, but when I go through the process again and try to do an iCloud backup I get the same reset/restore loop.
I could start from scratch, but I really, really, really don't want to go through all of my hundreds of apps, reinstall them one by one, etc. etc. etc.
I thought that once I started using iCloud, I didn't need to sync with iTunes anymore--guess I was wrong.

• I cannot sync my iphone music, i had used my i phone on another pc, now when i bought a song on this computer from the apple store, i have just been sent an email that says Your Apple ID, was just used to purchase "" by a computer or device not prev assoc

i cannot sync my iphone music, i had used my i phone on another pc, which died. Ive managed to save the hard drive and transfer stuff across. I ended up smashing my phone and could update all other stuff on restore but cant sync any music. It is all grey at the top of the screen. Ive re installed itunes and cleared all phone data. Now when i bought a song on this computer from the apple store, i have just been sent an email that says Your Apple ID, was just used to purchase (a song ) by a computer that had not been previously associated with that apple id. So do i have to tell apple now somehow i am using itunes on this pc, and if so how? Because i authorised it and it said this pc was one of 5 aujthorised. if anyone can be of assistance then great!

I'm having a similar problem. I had previously (over a year ago) purchased 2 episodes of Law & Order. Then about 2 months ago, I purchased the 3rd season of Sons of Anarchy. When I downloaded these episodes to my iPad, about a dozen full seasons of various shows popped up, too. No money was removed from my iTunes account & theses particular shows aren't in my iTunes library on my desktop. I've tried every which way to delete them from my ipad, but can't. I went to the Apple store & they suggested I contact expresslane.apple.com for help. I submitted my problem, via email Friday, as they asked, but have not received any response. Any suggestions on how to get rid of these "phantoms?".

• Multiple devices using iTunes on multiple Windows accounts interchangeably

I have searched this topic online extensively and have not been able to find a case similar to mine explained. So I am hoping that I can get some assistance here.
I have a Windows XP PC with 2 user accounts - one for me and one for my wife. I have 4 devices that sync to the 2 accounts today as follows:
- My iTunes account/library
1. iPhone - synching Outlook contacts, ringtones, videos
- Wife's iTunes account/library
2. My iPod - synching music
3. Wifes' iPod - synching music
4. Baby's iPod - synching music
There is no music in my iTunes library as all our music is on her library. What I want to do is sync some songs to my iPhone by connecting it to her iTunes library. I want to continue to sync my other data on my iTunes account. Is there any way that I can do this without iTunes prompting to delete all data off my iPhone when I attempt to sync music from her iTunes library to my iPhone?
Thanks.

No. Use a flash drive to copy what you want from your wife's library and add it to your own library, and then sync your iPhone as normal.

• I have multiple apple devices mainly used between me and my wife , my question is that can i have two sets of contacts backed up to icloud one for her devices and one for my devices using the same itunes account

i have two sets of devices one ipad, iphone and mac which i use and one iphone ipad and mac which my wife uses
now is it possible to have two sets of contacts and calendar synchronised for her devices and one for my devices using the same icloud account
i dont want a separate itunes account as we use the same music books and apps to be automatically downloaded which is very convenient
please guide

You can set up different iCloud accounts on each device using different Apple IDs (to keep your mail, calendars, contacts, etc. separated), and still share the same iTunes account (in Settings>Store on your device). There is no requirement that you use the same Apple ID for purchases and for iCloud.

• I have an older Ipod Touch, I bought a new one and the Itunes on my computer is too old to recognize my new Ipod Touch and cannot be updated. Is there a creditable software program I can use to get all my old music from my old iPod Touch to the new one?

I have an older iPod Touch, I bought a new one and the Itunes on my computer is too old to recognize my new iPod Touch and Itunes cannot be updated. Is there a creditable software program I can use to get all my old music from my old iPod Touch to the new one? It is my understanding that the music cannot be saved onto my new iTunes, b/c I did not have iCloud. I have over 2,000 songs I just cannot part with. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help some how!! THANKS!

I had the same problem with my iPad, i couldn't get the newer version of itunes because the computer was too old and my iPad couldnt sync with the old itunes. I got a PC from school a few months later so that solved the problem for me. Unfortunately i don't think there would be a program to put your music on your iPod, iTunes should be the only way to transfer files to Apple devices. What operating system are you running and what version of it is it?

• When you are pulling music from a hard drive and it says music can not be found, is there a way to stop it from doing that every time I play music from my computer? It used to find all music now it only finds 1 song at a time

When pulling music from a harddrive and it say music can not be found, is there a way to stop this from happening every time I play music on my computer? It used to find all music when serching for song but now it only finds 1 at a time. I have over 2000 songs so I can't go through this every time.

1) However I do not want to move my itunes Music onto the flash drive, only my Movies, and want to keep my music on my hard drive.
Is this possible?
Yes
2) Do the MacBook Air's not have a separate program other than itunes that can play movies? If so, is there a program I can get to solve this problem? I went onto the App Store to see if there was something I could download, but all the apps were for creating DVD's, not simply playing them.
If you can play the movies in iTunes, you should be able to open the movie files using Quicktime, which should already be on your system. If you have already transferred the files to your flash drive, open the flash drive in Finder, and hold control when you click on the movie file (or right click if you have the enabled) and select Open With Quicktime Player. This should play the movie directly from the flash drive.
If you want to set all .m4v files to open with Quicktime by just double clicking on the file, you can follow the steps here: http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2573/os_x_how_to_change_default_application_to_op en_file_type/
3) If 1. & 2. questions are solvable, will it then be safe to delete the movies from my itunes?
You can move the TV shows to your flash drive by dragging them from the iTunes window to your flash drive in Finder or the flash drive icon on the desktop. When you are sure everything is transferred over to your external device, you can delete the movie from iTunes. I recommend playing the videos from the flash drive first before deleting them in iTunes.
To delete the videos from iTunes, you can highlight them and press the delete key on your keyboard. In the next prompt, you would want to move it to the trash so that it is deleted from your internal hard drive.
I hope that helps!

• Importing iTunes music, apps, device backups from Time Capsule

Recently my old iMac hard drive crashed. Fortunately, the data is safe on a Time Capsule, and I'd now like to move all the relevant iTunes data (music, photos, device info and apps) to an existing computer and account. Any suggestions on how to approach this?
Thanks,
Gary

Hello gpgrim,
I'd recommend using Migration Assistant, as it does all that you've described, and in a simple, relatively automated manner.

• Streaming of Music and Videos using iCloud

I have been ripping all my CD collection and my DVD collection to be able to play it on iPhone, iPad and iPod. Now with iTunes being in the cloud I was wondering if it is possible to stream both my Music and my Videos directly from the cloud to my appletv. Anyone who knows that? Would be great to see my movies without starting a mac and then streaming it via airplay...
//Roland

Now with iTunes being in the cloud I was wondering if it is possible to stream both my Music and my Videos directly from the cloud to my appletv.
The good news is that AppleTV does support iTunes Match. It is also the only iOS device that will only stream content from iTunes Match - it has to, since the most recent model really doesn't have local storage. I have an AppleTV and I use iTunes match all the time. Just be aware that not every music file will be deemed eligible, so if you have low-bitrate songs, or songs in a format that iTunes Match isn't set up for, they will be deemed ineligible. There are work-arounds for this which basically involve making a copy in a format Apple likes. For most people that just means making an AAC copy within iTunes and running Match again.
The bad news is that the only music videos eligible for iTunes match are those that during the matching process, are identified as (1) being purchased from the iTunes store and (2) still available in the store. Music videos in general, as well as movies and audio books are not eligible for the service and after iTunes match has scanned your library, will be identified by a cloud with a strikethrough.

• Can we have genius mixes on our IOS5 device using iTunes match?

Can we have genius mixes on our IOS5 device using iTunes match?

Actually I was wrong ... I mistaked being able to say "play rock music" for genius.
You can't say "play similar songs" it will say genius is not available.
I don't understand why they would have disabled genius all together for itunes match?

• I have a mac os 10.5.8, i want to upgrade to mac os snow leopard, can i keep all my files (documents, music on itunes) without backing up all the files first on a external device prior to the upgrade?

I have a mac os 10.5.8, i want to upgrade to mac os snow leopard, can i keep all my files (documents, music on itunes) without backing up all the files first on a external device prior to the upgrade?

I strongly advise against upgrading the OS without first making a backup. Were something to go wrong you would lose all your files without the backup. See:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update. While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
E. If updating:
Download and install update(s)
Use Software Update, or
Download standalone updater(s).
