ActiveSync support!

I am relatively new as a Blackberry (BB) user, and must say that I am a convert.  I can easily say that my productivity has increased tremendously, and others in my company have noticed as well.  That being said, the only show stopper as far as others in my company are concerned is the lack of ActiveSync support.  From the looks of the forum threads, it appears that this is a hot topic filled with all sorts of work-arounds and kludges.
I work for a small company that has an exchange server but has no desire (nor ability) to add BES support (even the free version).  We don't have an IT department, and rely upon an outside consultant to manage the Exchange for us whenever something goes wrong, which is very seldom.  I can sync my inbox via OWA, but not my sent mail, so when I’m away from the office I can’t refer to my sent mail at all.  If someone adds an appointment to my calendar at work, I don’t know about it until I get back to the office and sync my BB to the Desktop Manager running on my PC with a cable.
So what is a user like me supposed to do?  If you look at the forums on various BB sites such as Crackberry.com, there are a myriad of suggestions including getting third party software such as AstraSync and BBerrySync which cost approximately $50/year (because they use a server to provide the syncing) – and many have reported issues, etc. with these products.  Or I can subscribe to an external BES provider and pay a monthly fee to them and pay AT&T another $15/month extra for BES service – no thanks.  Or I can download several Google products and sync away to my heart’s content – but then you have Outlook syncing to Gmail and then the BB syncing to Gmail which is once again putting a third party (albeit a free third party) in the middle, but it sure seems like a lot of extra steps.  Plus, that only addresses the contacts and calendar and not the sent mail issue or tasks.
Why go through all of this when ActiveSync can solve the problem?  Before I became a BB convert, I had a WinMo device and really didn’t think that BB wouldn’t have this capability since other manufacturers had ActiveSync and BB had OWA access to mail via BIS.  Not all of us can work for larger companies that have deployed BES.  Some have made the comment that support of ActiveSync would be against BB’s philosophy and potentially reduce BES sales.  I really don’t understand that, since BB is now moving to a more consumer oriented focus in order to expand their base, there is a significant chunk of the marketplace that would benefit from having ActiveSync capabilities.  I would say that those companies that have bought into the BES philosophy (remote wipe, security, provisioning, control, etc.) would still use BES.  But those companies, such as the one I work for, that do not have the need for the same level of security would benefit from having their employees have more access to their Outlook Exchange data (mail, calendar, & contacts) without having to be burdened with the cost and support of BES.  Just using my company as an example, I am the only person in the company that has this issue since all of the other users are WinMo, Nokia, or iPhone users. [Side note here – the arch enemy iPhone can do this but not cut & paste, but really, isn’t ActiveSync more important.]  Like it or not, there are more users of Exchange without BES than with BES, and RIM would not be making a philosophical concessions by having an ActiveSync client available to those users that wanted it, or are willing to pay for the application.
Well, that’s my two cents worth….. Thanks for listening ……  And I am open to any and all comments and suggestions.

Hi
Well I'm currently testing the new (beta) version of NotifySync which now does include HTML ;-)
I use NotifySync for my main company mailbox and BIS messages for my other (personal) accounts. The beauty of NotifySync is the true folder mirroring that you get against your company ActiveSync server. I dont mind my personal accounts in another program icon. I can keep them separate.
Also I assign the left hand convenience button (normally used for Voice Command) to NotifySync and move the NotifySync icon to the top left hand corner which means it will always appear in the short desktop mode.
You are right about year 1 pricing but year 2 is half of what you stated. Year 2 plus pricing is to cover support and maintenance releases.
Hope this helps
Best Wishes

  • Will iOS5 support more ActiveSync email security polices?

Could you please tell me if iOS5 will support the ActiveSync policies: “Include past e-mail items:” e-mail retention period and “Allow attachments to be downloaded to the device” policies in Exchange?
Under iOS4 they are not supported per testing and also per http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb232129.aspx, and inferred in http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#featuredarticles/FA_Exchange_ActiveSync_ and_iOS4_Devices/Introduction/Introduction.html.
These are necessary to have the iPhone and the iPad conform to our corporate security policy.
    Thank you!

Thanks again for the NDA answer and the link to the iOS 5 site - I will wait and see I guess whether full ActiveSync support will be included to allow iPhones/iPads to access our organization's email.
Also I just got the answer to the followup question regarding feature request how-to here.

  • Apple Support??? Are you listening??? Manual calendar sync???

    I had a simple question:
How do I manually sync Calendar and Contacts with Exchange?
I and others have asked this, but no response from Apple. Is there any way to submit a question to Apple? I heard such great things and this is my first Apple product, but there seems to be no support - i can file a bug report of feature request but it goes into a black hole.
Today i noticed I had a calendar appointment in Outlook but not on my phone. I change its time, added notes, etc. but it would not sync. Finally i copied it to later in the day, and it did sync. I deleted the original, and changed the time on the copy, and now i have it.
I really thought that when Apple announced the 3G with ActiveSync support, that after 6 months of dev time, and a mature protocol like ActiveSync that this would be a slam dunk - wow was i wrong.
The Calendar and Contacts features on the phone are not ready for enterprise at all. I can't display some contacts by business name first - it is ALWAYS by person name. Calendar doesn't allow you dial an embedded number for a con call. I feel like i am living in the windows mobile world many revs ago......

Blackberry has opposite issues, calendar events that don't disappear even though they are deleted in Exchange and outlook.
I agree they all have some issues, but I am really frustrated that Apple claimed enterprise support and a business enabled phone, yet they left out basic usability queues to the user. All I want is a way to know that my calendar and contacts are up to date. A "last synced date" at the bottom like Mail does would be simple and easy - or just a big ActiveSync "Sync" button and a message that said "Sync of Contacts, Calendar, Mail" successful.
I have read numerous articles regarding the pains Apple goes to for Mac usability, even where a button is placed. But i think they skipped the usability testing in order to get ActiveSync support out the door.

  • Mac Mail and Activesync

My iPhone connects easily to my corp Exchange server using Activesync. My Mac Mail does not because it is looking for the EWS facility. Does anyone know if there is a way to get Mail on OS 10.6 to connect to Activesync? It took awhile to get IT to support the iPhone. I just assumed that when we got that done that the Mac Mail would be a no-brainer. Silly me.

I'm going to continue looking. Isn't ActiveSync an open protocol now? Anyway, Apple did not make this especially clear and unless they can explain to me why it is inappropriate or impossible to support ActiveSync in both Mail.app and iPhone, I'm just going to chalk it up to a really stupid business decision.
Mail.app supports the Exchange Web Services which from the information I can gather ActiveSync should be a subset of this. I cannot find any information on why non-mobile clients should not have ActiveSync support.
My experience with this problem is that most corporations will yield to the demand for activesync on mobile devices. However, for some inexplicable reason they do not open up EWS to the outside world. As a result most of us have to connect to the internal corporate networks to access our corporate email.

  • Cisco ASA 5505 VPN with iPhone

Hello Everyone. I am a newbie to the Cisco appliances, so please bear with me. I am trying to configure this unit to allow iPhone VPN access to our network to sync LOTUS DOMINO (Not Exchange) user's Email, Contacts, and Calendar. We have a Sonicwall NSA 2400 that is our main router, so the ASA will only be used for VPN access, not routing. It will be in the DMZ providing VPN access for the iPhones. With the VPN connected, we need to limit access to only those services required by the iphone to sync information. The Software version on the Cisco is 7.2(4). If there is anyone that could help me out, I would greatly appreciate it. Please remember I am new to this, so please be patient. Where do I begin? I hope to hear from anyone soon.

    Hi,
I cannot help you with the Cisco side of the equation, but do you know about Lotus Traveler? It's free from IBM and essentially adds ActiveSync support to your Domino email environment. The iPhone is configured with an Exchange ActiveSync account and pointed to the Lotus Traveler server (which sits in your DMZ and only needs port 80/443 access). It gives you full push email/contacts/calendar (Blackberry-like) functionality.
Like I said, it's a free add-on from IBM Lotus for all licensed Domino users.

  • Gmail calendar sync is available why not hotmail calendar

Why s that you can sync to a gmail calendar but not to a hotmail account calendar.
    Post relates to: None

Hotmail calendar sync is here! Microsoft recently added Exchange ActiveSync support to Hotmail accounts, giving full bi-directional sync of mail, contacts, calendar, and tasks.
To set this up, edit/create your Hotmail account using Manual Setup and set type as Exchange (EAS). Then use the following settings:
    Server: m.hotmail.com
    Domain: leave blank
Username and password is your email address and password.

  • A way to sync tasks into one calendar on N8, appoi...

I am currently syncing appointments into one calendar and tasks into another, on my Nokia N8. Why do I do this? Skip about halfway down this post, for my rationale.
I'd like to know if there's an easier way to get this done.
I am using a Nokia N8 and syncing with Outlook 2007.
I have both Ovi Suite and Nokia PC Suite (7.1.30.9, which is one of the last versions that doesn't prohibit a connection with the N8). And, I've synced succesfully with both of them.
Nokia PC Sync is set to synchronize tasks and files/folders, but not appointments or contacts. I set it to sync an empty Calendar folder within Outlook. But, it syncs my normal Tasks folder. That way, Tasks go into a calendar on the N8 called "PC Sync."
Then, Ovi Suite synchronizes appointments and contacts, but not tasks or files/folders. I set it to sync an empty Tasks folder within Outlook, but it syncs my normal Calendar folder. Ovi Suite places the appointments into the default N8 calendar called "Personal"
Is there a way, preferrably using Ovi Sync, where I can place tasks into one calendar, on the N8, and Appointments into a different calendar?
Why do I do this? Nokia didn't provide a way to exclude tasks from any of the calendar views (but provided a task-only view - what were they thinking!?). This means the daily and weekly views are filled with tasks, all set ahead of the appointments. I cannot imagine why anyone would want that to constitute their default view of the calendar. Particularly since there is a view available, of only tasks.
By placing tasks in a separate calendar from appointments, I can pick and choose whether I want to see tasks with appointments, in the daily and weekly views.
Now, if only Symbian would be able to sync the categories associated with my tasks and appointments, in Outlook. . . But, I realize (even after years of hoping Nokia would introduce the concept of categories to its software) that you have to walk, before you can run.
I hope you have found this post to be entertaining. But, back to my original question: Is there any way to sync - using only one software solution on the PC, tasks into one of the Nokia N8's calendars and appointments into another?
    Thanks for any ideas.

Here is the text of my feedback letter regarding Tasks...
Come on Apple! You have to be kidding me! I got caught up in the iPhone 3G euphoria and blindly ordered my 16GB Black about a week ago. (still waiting for it BTW) I had not purchased an iPhone Edge specifically because of its lack of Exchange connectivity. I have been "suffering" with an AT&T Tilt (HPC 8925, TyTn II) for the past year while I waited for Apple to "catch up" as it were.
Well, imagine my surprise a few minutes ago when I read that "Exchange ActiveSync Support" on the iPhone is not as capable as it is on a Windows Mobile device or even a Blackberry for that matter!
Look, any junior Exchange admin knows how important Public Folders are in the enterprise. There is absolutely no excuse for the lack of Public Folder support on the iPhone. This is a serious issue that will lose Apple and AT&T important high use, high revenue enterprise customers.
Then there is the issue of tasks. It has been my experience that many Exchange users utilize the Tasks feature extensively. I am dumbfounded that task support is missing from the iPhone.
Finally comes Notes. While it might not be used as much as Public Folders and Tasks, from the outside looking in it seems that integrating Exchange Notes would be a fairly simple endeavor.
PLEASE tell me and the rest of your customers (and potential customers) that support for Exchange Tasks, Notes, and Public Folders is in the works. We need something integrated just like mail, calendars, and contacts, not some patch-on workaround.
I and the rest of your users look forward to your response.
    Sincerely,
    eddiela

Update 6/18: I have directed this thread to a manager of Palm's technical team, he advised me that many of these suggestions were forwarded to the development team and most are being worked on/considered. He also confirmed that an update is coming over the next couple weeks that will fix a few issues including the SSL issue with EAS... and there is another update that will fix the MSFP issues (security policies) with EAS email (in around 60 days) It's good to hear that Palm is very responisive to our needs and suggestions.
Update 7/11: Since this thread has received so much attention and ideas I have not been able to post all the different suggestions on this front page. I have put this forum thread in front of several sprint/Palm employees that do have a say in future updates... so please keep posting suggstions! Please also use the link below. Thanks!

  • Corporate Email..

So my corporate email was accessible from ActiveSync on my Treo 700w... But I can't figure out the settings using the "Outlook" option. I don't wanna ask IT b/c we're supposed to only expense phone bills (wireless) that use ActiveSync. Any way I can connect using Outlook to anyones knowledge? Also, were they going to add ActiveSync support or was that a rumor?

The treo was most likely using an OWA (outlook web access) server. The iPhone's imap exchange does not appear to work with OWA, but rather needs the address of the actual exchange servers. You should be able to find out what those are by going to the account settings in your outlook on the computer, however it is unlikely imho that your exchange servers are live to the outside world. In other words you can not directly access them from outside your company's network. This is what OWA is for. It handles a relationship from the outside to the internal servers, but again the iPhone doesn't appear to work with OWA at this time.

  • Nokia 808 - questions about email client

Hi guys, i am considering purchasing the 808, however i have just one concern, does the exchange activesync support html format, i am used to see the pictures within the body of the email, thanks in advance.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi galaga742,
Thanks for your post and welcome to the forum.
I've just tested this for you, the Nokia 808 doesn't support html format. A picture sent within the body of an email will be received on the phone as an attachment and will not be visible in the email itself.
    Hope this clears things up.

  • IPhone Feedback - is anyone listening?

Love the concept, now waiting for the following updates:
    1. ActiveSync - Support for push exchange mail. This is a must-have, or else I have to revert to my blackberry (not so cool, but email usability is way better than iPhone mail).
    2. Mail usability: Delete selection, search/find, archive/save mail
    3. Cut and paste
    4. Quick profile change to vibrate only mode (meeting mode)

    4. Quick profile change to vibrate only mode (meeting mode)
This is already present on the iPhone. Top switch on left side of phone (above volume rocker) will put your phone into vibrate-only mode.

  • IPAD 2 attachment problem (mime) -exchange 2003

I 'm using exchange 2003 server with activesync support. The majority of the attachments sent to ipad
are not showing pdf, xls etc (I get only the mime icon). I tried using different mail format as suggested by apple html, rtf, plain still not working
Could you please advise if possible?
    Kind regards
    George

Before I realized it was working fine through 3G I completely re-setup my exchange email just in case.  No luck there.  Everything else (including laptops) are connecting to exchange via WiFi with no problem so I'm pretty confident the network itself is not the issue and am also confident that the iPad/iPhone exchange setup is correct.  Obviously since it works 3G it must be right.

  • HT4759 Completing Exchange info; Server, Domain, and Username?

When setting up my several different email addresses with my new Toshiba Laptop, I was asked to fill out an Exchange form that included filling in my email addresses, plus a Server, a Domain, and a Usersname, and finally my password.  I was okay with the email addresses and the password, but did not know what to put in for my Server and Domain info, or the Username, but it may now be my new Username that we just completed, MarkScharer, for my Apple ID.
Can you please help me with this information so I can start using my new laptop!?  Plus I need to know if this information is going to be different for each email address or the same?  I have (3) "gmail.com" addresses, (1) "icloud.com" address, and (1) "me.com" address, and did not know if the Server, Domain and Username information would be the same for each of these or not.
Please help!  Thank you, Mark Scharer

Has your employer enabled ActiveSync support on the Exchange Server?
If so, all that should be required is entering your email address, user name (domain\User) and your account password in the required fields when creating the account using the Exchange Account preset.

  • Calendar// my day

    Hi There,
I used to have a Nokia E51 and the one thing that I loved about that phone that really kept me organized was that on the home screen// (the desktop) would list all of the events in my calendar for that day. By having this kinda thing displayed on the desktop of the phone, in a way that i wouldn't have to open an application, would be extremely useful. that way I would know my entire day, or at least the next 4-5 events, in the matter of seconds.
I'd really like to see this on the next update..
    E.G.
    12:30 - Lunch
    2:45 - Meeting /w joe
    3:30 - train leaves
    5:00 - etc...
    Best,
