Activity Monitor - Disk Space Pie Chart

Anyone else miss it? I propose asking apple to bring it back in Mavericks!

Posting this here might make you feel better, but other than that, it won't do much good. This is a user-to-user forum and is not usually monitored by Apple for the purposes of feedback. If you want Apple to change something, you can give your feedback here: Apple - Mac OS X - Feedback

  • Activity monitor memory usage pie chart gone?

    What happened to the pie chart that sits in the dock that shows memory usage?  I found this very useful in the past, and Mavericks seems to have removed it from the dock options.

    Uhhh, I know it's a bit late for this but...

    I have
    CPU Usage
    CPU History
    Network Usage
    Disk Activity
    so it's hard to know what you're taking about when referring the the "memory pressure graph".
    Please clarify. Thanks!
    ... it sounds like you have a previous version of the Activity Monitor.  The one that comes with 10.9 has
    CPU
    Memory
    Energy
    Disk
    Network
    The memory pressure is at the bottom of the Memory tab.

  • Difference between Available and Used in Info for MacIntosh HD and Space Free and Space Utilised under Activity Monitor, Disk Usage?

    I have a MacBook Air 2010, upgraded to OSX Version 10.8.4.  When I click the Macintosh HD and then look under Info, it says I have 120.47GB capacity, Available 60.97GB, Used 59.5GB.  However when I look under Activity Monitor, Disk Usage it says Space Utilised 92.18GB, Space free: 28.29GB.  Questions:
    Why the difference?
    Which is more important for computer speed?
    How to I reduce "Space Utlised" to closer to "Used"?  (I've already moved 25GB of the more bulky, less immediate data to external storage from the computer, including emptying IPhoto Trash and the main Trash.  The Space Utilised dropped only from 95GB to 92GB--while the Used space dropped from 85GB to 60GB.)

    Just to let you I tried the reindexing before the Mendes advice and it had no effect.  Of course, I may have done it wrong. It was the HD icon from the desktop which I dragged into the Privacy window of Spotlight (and then did the +, OK, - and close Spotlight).  Should I have dragged in something else?  Or opened up the HD and dragged in all the contents?
    Also, there is a small section in my HD which is for my wife's account which has a separate user name and password, although it has no data in it and I set it up while under my administrator account original, so my MacAir may think I still "own" it; in any case, I did not get any sort of error message saying I did not have ownership of the entire HD.

  • Agentless Mode - Monitor Disk Space

    Hi guys, I have 100 VMs running Windows 7. All I wish to do is monitor the free space on them so I installed the agent on a server VMand I'm trying to use it as a proxy to agentless monitor disk space on them. I can't figure out though how to get the disk
    space monitor to fire against them agentless. It doesn't seem to discover the disk instances against them. Is there a guide for this somewhere?

    I should have been more specific.
    There are no internal firewalls software or hardware based
    Remote registry is ruing on all machines.
    The SCOM action account is a full admin on al client machines
    The issue is that the logical disk are simply not being discovered agentlessly. How to troubleshoot this? I see messages like this on my Proxy agent:

  • SCOM only monitoring disk space of a group of servers

    I have been looking for a way to setup SCOM to ONLY monitor the disk space on a specific group of servers.
    We have a sandbox environment that consists of approximately 100 servers.  The only responsibility we have is to make sure these machines are patched.  Everything else related to the OS and Software is handled by the developers who own the sandbox,
    so no other monitors are needed.  Microsoft patches are failing because some of the C drives do not have enough disk space.  Is there a way to discover these servers and only have the disk monitored? All other monitors in SCOM can be ignored on these
    servers.
    Thanks for any assistance that can be provided.

    Without knowing what else you have in your SCOM environment, it could be a lot of work to start excluding this group of servers from all the other monitoring you have.
    Other options you could consider are to allow the servers to be monitored, but somehow exclude those alerts from being sent in any subscriptions, or putting the components of those servers into Maintenance Mode other than the C: drives, but both of these
    options will still collect information on these 100 servers and take space in your SCOM DBs.
    You can refer to this page for how to use the free space monitor and override it for a group that will target your 100 servers. http://blogs.technet.com/b/jonathanalmquist/archive/2009/04/04/logical-disk-free-space-monitor.aspx

  • Monitor disk space using alerts

    I need to receive an email when a disk space on a given drive (which has SQL DB files) falls below 3 GB:
    - I need to use alerts (I don't want to use a SQL job to run some SP every x mins).
    - SQL Server performance condition alert cannot be used, because SQL cannot access non-SQL performance counters

  • Conky to monitor disk space.

    Okay, I'm trying to modify Southie75's conky config for my own use, and running into some problems.
    Here is the disk part of the config:
    ${alignc}Disks
    ${alignr}Writes/Reads
    Root ($color${fs_type /}${color0}) ${alignr}$color${diskio_write /dev/sda2}${color0}/$color${diskio_read /dev/sda2}
    ${fs_used /}${color0}/$color${fs_size /} ${alignr}$color${fs_used_perc /}% ${color0}${fs_bar 8,100 /}
    Vista ($color${fs_type /home/southie/vista}${color0}) ${alignr}$color${diskio_write /dev/sda1}${color0}/$color${diskio_read /dev/sda1}
    ${fs_used /home/southie/vista}${color0}/$color${fs_size /home/southie/vista} ${alignr}$color${fs_used_perc /home/southie/vista}% ${color0}${fs_bar 8,100 /home/southie/vista}
    Backup ($color${fs_type /home/southie/mnt}${color0}) ${alignr}$color${diskio_write /dev/sdb2}${color0}/$color${diskio_read /dev/sdb2}
    ${fs_used /home/southie/mnt}${color0}/$color${fs_size /home/southie/mnt} ${alignr}$color${fs_used_perc /home/southie/mnt}% ${color0}${fs_bar 8,100 /home/southie/mnt}
    Now, my version:
    ${alignc}Disks
    ${alignr}Writes/Reads
    Root ($color${fs_type /}${color0}) ${alignr}$color${diskio_write /dev/sda2}${color0}/$color${diskio_read /dev/sda2}
    ${fs_used /}${color0}/$color${fs_size /} ${alignr}$color${fs_used_perc /}% ${color0}${fs_bar 8,100 /}
    Home ($color${fs_type /}${color0}) ${alignr}$color${diskio_write /dev/sdd4}${color0}/$color${diskio_read /dev/sdd4}
    ${fs_used /}${color0}/$color${fs_size /} ${alignr}$color${fs_used_perc /}% ${color0}${fs_bar 8,100 /}
    Anime ($color${fs_type /media/Anime}${color0}) ${alignr}$color${diskio_write /dev/sda1}${color0}/$color${diskio_read /dev/sda1}
    ${fs_used /media/Anime}${color0}/$color${fs_size /media/Anime} ${alignr}$color${fs_used_perc /media/Anime}% ${color0}${fs_bar 8,100 /media/Anime}
    Storage ($color${fs_type /media/Storage}${color0}) ${alignr}$color${diskio_write /dev/sdc1}${color0}/$color${diskio_read /dev/sdc1}
    ${fs_used /media/Storage}${color0}/$color${fs_size /media/Storage} ${alignr}$color${fs_used_perc /media/Storage}% ${color0}${fs_bar 8,100 /media/Storage}
    It seems to work, but the probem is that every time I show down my computer and boot it up again, conky will not start because the /dev/XXX has changed. I asked about this on IRC, and was linked to the wiki about persistent block device naming (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Per … ice_naming), but I don't really understand how to make it work with the conky config.

    What did I miss? Do I need to include that whole first part too?

  • Activity Monitor reports incorrect amount of RAM

    I have an early '09 Mac Mini 2.0 Ghz. I bought a 2GB stick from crucial and installed it in the empty slot without a hitch, I was nervous, but ifixit was a great help. If I look at the "About this Mac" screen, it clearly now says 3GB. If I then click look under the system profiler, all is well there also. 1-1GB + 1-2GB for a total of 3. If I open Activity Monitor, under the pie chart where it is supposed to say the total amount of RAM installed on the machine, it says 2.75GB. What gives? This one really has me stumped. Strange thing is that if I add up the "free:" and "used:" from the column on the left, it adds to 3GB.
    I check my other Macs, all 4 display the correct amount in activity monitor. 3 of them running Snow Leopard and 1 G4 running Leopard. I called Apple support and the guy I talked to was unsure, but said that I should call Crucial. Called them, and the guy told me he was CERTAIN that the RAM was fine if it was up and running without crashing, which it is. He said it would either not startup, or it would be crashing regularly. I downloaded a RAM testing software, recommended by the crucial guy, called rember. Ran it, and all tests passed.
    A few months ago, shortly before installing the RAM, I was given an old G3 iBook. I wanted to put some software on it for my daughter and hooked it up via Target Disk Mode to my Mini. Soon after it was connected, I smelled an electrical fire. The Mini then shut down and the fan spun at max for over an hour, with no response to the power button and the light off. Eventually I unplugged it, then later plugged back in and restarted. It seemed to be working fine. When I tried to hook up a firewire HD, it wouldn't read it. Under system profiler it said "Unable to read Firewire Device" in red (first time I had ever seen color in the profiler!) letters. I took it to the genius bar and the eventually told me the logic board was bad. Week later got it back with a new LB. About a month later Snow Leopard came out and I then added the RAM and installed it. It had previously been running Leopard.
    I know that somewhere along the line, there was an update specifically for '09 Mini's that said something to the effect of... to correct an issue with certain Mac Mini's recognizing certain 3rd party RAM. It was a EFI update!?! maybe!?! or some type of ROM update, I think. I installed that update and got the "Successfully installed" dialog box after restart. I am not certain that the "bad" logic board (TDM firewire issue) had anything to do with the RAM, or even if the issue was present before the new logic board.
    Would a replacement logic board be the cause? Maybe I had done the ROM update on the Mini's old logic board, but the new one needs to be updated? Does anyone else have these issues with a Mini or even another computer? Or is it a bug in activity monitor?

    You have to look at whether the specs state the GPU RAM is shared with main memory or not.
    For example, for the latest Mac Minis, the spec states:
    NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 128MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory
    or
    NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory
    Compare to the high end iMac which simply states:
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 with 512MB of GDDR3 memory
    All current Macs use integrated GPUs that use shared main memory RAM for graphics save for iMacs with an NVIDIA GT or ATI Radeon GPU, MacBook Pros with the NVIDIA 9600M GPU, and Mac Pros.
    On shared machines Snow Leopard is just more honest by noting that memory used by the GPU is not actually available for use by the OS.

  • Disk Space for Elements

    I recently downloaded Elements after buying Parallel and Wiindows 7 for my Mac notebook. I keep getting the message that there is not enough disk space. I have moved all I can find to my external hard drive and deleted all I could find and there is still not enough space. What can I do further?

    Are you installing PSE in OS X or in windows? It's not clear from your post. If windows, why? and how large is your virtual machine? If in OS X, how large is your hard drive and how much free space is left? If you don't know how to find this, go to Applications>Utilities>Activity Monitor>Disk usage and you can see there:

  • Alert on Low disk space

    Hi  All
    I have created an alert of WMI event in sql server  which send mail if disk space on D drive is less than 10GB

    but some time it does'nt send alerts. I am not sure when this __InstanceModificationEvent   occure

  • Activity monitor dock icon in mavericks

    I used to be able to show the Activity Monitor as a pie graph of memory usage in the dock icon. But in Mavericks I cannot figure out how to do that.
    Help?

    Yes, thanks for the confirmation. I did some googling and found more people with eight-cores who could not view more than one bar in the dock icon.
    I understand that showing eight bars in the icon might've been unreadable, but I would have preferred that they show two bars for the dual processors, instead of leaving us with one bar. I'll have to look into some alternate utilities, but it's a shame Apple decided to regress functionality on their top-end machines.

  • Maverick free disk space activity monitor

    Activity Monitor in 10.9 does not display free disk space any more. What was the idea behind that?

    Additional question related to Actvity Monitor:  In 10.9, was the capability to monitor the disk activity of an external disk also removed?    I have had some problems with an external disk; the old activity monitor gave me some indication whether it was functioning normally or not.  I also used the Activity Monitor to watch the disk activity during backups in the event of disruption of some kind; could be, for example, a loose FireWire cable. A third part app is ok, but I have the sense that useful capability has been removed.  -j

  • Activity Monitor Memory Pie Chart

    I set the dock icon to monitor my memory usage as I do a lot of work in VM's that can chew through what's available.  After updating the only icons are CPU, Network, and Disk usage. What happened to Memory?
    And yes, I know there are other more informative resource monitors out there, but Activity Monitor had the best "at a glance" dashboard.

    This is no longer an option, especially since Mavericks has new memory management routines (ie, memory compression) that make the charting of memory usage less straightforward. Apple has switched to a new "Memory Pressure" approach to viewing memory usage, which is available in the Memory section of Activity Monitor, but so far has not been added as a Dock icon option. Hopefully Apple will do so, as this would perhaps be one of the more useful Dock icon options.
