Activity Monitor doesn't start up

Hello,
I have a problem with only one program Activity Monitor.
I won't start up. And i checked the console and I fixed all priveleges of this disk. And I still have the same problem.
Does anyone know what will work?
Thanks in advance...
'The tool is not setuid root' This I don't understand...
2006-05-15 15:16:40.525 Activity Monitor[728] The tool is not setuid root - please repair the privileges

Ok I did some more research.... And I hope some of you can help me further..
I checked on other computers and they have a activitymonitor.plist... When I try to import it on this computer the file disappears... and i still have the message from the console that says please repair your priveleges... and they are good now...( I did reapair them and the priveleges are the same as all other programs.
If someone have a solution ... I will be the first to try
thanks COlin...
Isn't there a way with the terminal? Can't I start a program and say 'use this priveleges'??

  • Updated to Mavericks. Now theres tons of activity in my terminal and my activity monitor doesn't seem normal. I want to think someone's hacking me, but i need experienced help please!

I spent all night trying to fix this. It seems to me that someone has been trying to hack into my system with all of the random codes/lines in my terminal and i have all of his foreign IP addresses. And now i get this strange message that popped up in my terminal. Idk what it entirely means? I would very appreciate if someone could just walk me through this. Thank you very much.
First time poster. I have Macbook Pro. OSX. Just downloaded the new mavericks. I'm i have my firewall on. I stay secure. I run Netbarrier, Virusbarrier, IdentityScrubber.
I know something is a little odd or just doesn't make since about my activity monitor. Then my WiFi was hacked last night and this person was writing tons lines of commands/codes that i found in my terminal and my activity monitor doesn't look normal,  and I've only been a mac owner for about a year now and i'm learning more and more but while trying to figure out what was going on this message popped up which concerned me the most. Any help would be most appreciated, thanks guys. I have my terminal full of his foreign ip addresses i noticed, and a lot of other commands and lines he wrote out that i definitely did not type myself. Can anyone give me a hand on this? Thanks

haha, so now i'm thinking. I'm learning the terminal as fast as i can but there are several lines of codes and commands in there that throws up red flags to me that i don't fully understand. It just looks fishy too me. It would be highly appreciated if someone could just check this out just to tell me that i don't need to worry about it. Or point me in the right direction. I just feel un easy about this. ha.

  • JBuilder X Enterprise activity monitor hang while starting SUN ONE 7

    Dears,
I have JBuilder X Enterprise installed on Win XP Pro + SP1, and I installed SUN ONE plugin for development on SUN ONE 7 update 2 platform edition.
I can debug do whatever from about 4 weeks now, but starting from yesterday, I began getting Activity Monitor (Initializing the Java virtual machine) dialog still hanging, although the application server is started -It usually disappears after a period of starting-, so it is always there, the problem is that it appears as modal dialog and prevent me from debugging my code.
About my application, it is an EAR with around 45 EJBs, and 30 JSPs till now, I think it is not that overhead.
I tried and installed both JBuilder twice and SUN ONE application server once again, but no use :(
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks for yr time ...

I made a work around and post it to JBuilder team on the following URL.
using remote debugging even if u r on the same machine it worked fine.

My imac has slowed down and Safari keeps crashing and everything is slow. I tried to look in Activity monitor but when I try to get in it tells my that 'Activity monitor doesn't have to correct file permissions' and to fix it with Disk Utility, so I tried that but nothing. I have a 232 gb hard drive with 97 gb free. HELP, I am not very smart with computers so laments terms etc wud be great. thanks

  • Activity Monitor still broken

I was told that it was probably a problem with 10.4.5. Activity Monitor doesn't show any programs.
Now I've upgraded to leopard the same problem persists. I've deleted the plist files and this makes no difference. I can now, with leopard, look at the plist files and there isn't any obvious reason for this.
A ps -A in command mode works perfectly well, but no programs at all appear in Activity Monitor!
    Any suggestions gratefully received...

    OK, it's to do with:
Permissions, the location of the Activity Monitor Application and the Install Receipt file ...
Open a Terminal window and enter
    ls -l /Library/Receipts/Essentials.pkg/Contents/Archive.bom
    ls -l "/Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app/Contents/Resources/pmTool"
If you get an error about "pmTool" it means you moved Activity Monitor from /Applications/Utilities
Move it back there and then run Disc Utility and Repair Permissions
If you can't repair it means it's lost the Receipt file somehow

  • Cannot run Activity Monitor

I tried to run Activity Monitor. (One reason was to see if there was something causing seemingly sluggish behavior when, e.g., I open folders. Opening the Applications and Utilities folders seems to take a long time for all items to be listed.) I get the following message:
Activity Monitor can not start because of incorrect file permissions.
I have reset permissions using Disk Utility to no avail. I have reset permissions and ACL to all accounts using the 10.5 install disk to no avail. I have created another user (with Admin privileges), and Activity Monitor still won't run, giving the same error message. Any ideas on what is wrong and how to fix would be greatly appreciated. I am on the verge of reinstalling 10.5 (and am willing to do so, if it solves these problems). Thanks!

You should check for ACL troubles in your /Applications directory
    Open terminal.app
    at the prompt type:
    ls -ael /Applications/utilities
If you get something like this:
    drwxr-xr-x+ 3 kj staff Activity Monitor.app 102 Jul 19 01:36
    0: group:everyone deny delete,limit_inherit
    1: group:wheel allow list,addfile,search,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeex tattr,readsecurity,file_inherit,directoryinherit
then you have ACL problems. There should be no acl entries on your apps.

  • RAM and Activity Monitor questions M.B.P. Is sOoOoo slow and I just don't know where to start..RAM and Activity Monitor

So I am really unsure where to start but I def need a little help getting to where I want to be or feel I should be.  I understand that I am pretty much filled when it comes to the RAM on this machine but I need to figure out how to lower it.  I back up my machine about once a week which is longer than I would prefer but due to the way Mavericks has been acting I cant deal with the long backup process.... WHY?!?? may be your response to that and I will fill you in.  My external Hard Drive is a 1tb Lacie and its about 2 years old.  In that time I have dropped, lost, threw and slept ontop of it.  Causeing minor damage (each time) to the casing.  So now becomes rather hot and I kinda dont want it to burn out.  When I first updated to Mavericks the backups were fast and went along mb by mb...now though, the updates drag out for 3-5 hours and update kb by kb.  Tried some of the "solutions" posted on here but none seem to work any more than me consistantly purging my system while the backup happens...kinda why I dont have time to do it everyday like I'd like.
ANYWAY can someone please fill me in on a way, program, application, anything that will help me lower my RAM?  Because in the spirit of honesty I just dont have the extra funds to snag some new RAM or another HD.  I am almost at the point of saying "F**K IT" and wiping everything off the computer so its as close to empty as can be and manually, one by one redownloading what I want/need.  But I dont have the time to accomplish that either.  PLEASE lend me your ear and help a brudda out with some information from that exceptional brain of yours.
Below is a copy of my machines "report" from EtreCHECK and I am including screen shots of what the (Mavericks) Activity Monitor currently looks like in ALL PROCESSES.  PLUS it kinda seems that I have WAY TOOO MANY processes going on in the ACTIVITY MONITOR and have NO clue how to lower the amount.    Will truly appreciate any help anyone can toss my way.
        THANK YOU

Mavericks is designed to use as much RAM as possible. Free RAM is wasted RAM... it's RAM that's not working for you, not doing anything helpful. Seeing your RAM full is not an indication that there is a problem. Seeing your memory pressure graph spike would be.
As for the performance issues, see my Mac Performance Guide.

  • My airport doesn't manually shut down: airport icon is off, but activity monitor shows lots of packets still flowing. Its not my activity- all updates turned off. Virus?

I'm running a Macbook Pro circa 2007 with OSX 10.6.8 and Firefox 27.0.1, and just had a circumstance that really puzzled me. I have a Hughesnet satellite modem with wireless router that I connect to via the airport, and I use Little Snitch software in the demo mode so I know and have to approve which software can send info through the internet connection., but the demo mode had just timed out and terminated and within a half hour of that the computer fans started speeding up to max and the CPU got blazing hot (+200 degF).
Worried, I looked at the activity monitor and it was showing lots of internet activity even though I wasn't doing anything on the internet at the time, and I have all my software updates set to manual because otherwise they would use up my allotted daytime bandwidth and leave none for me. I'd already completed manual software updates during the nightly free time recently. Fearing my computer was hijacked & out of my control, I turned the airport off to terminate the internet connection, BUT IT DIDN'T TURN OFF, and though the indicator in the top right of the screen said it was off, packets were still streaming back & forth like crazy on the activity monitor, and the poor thing was still overheating. So I rebooted the computer, and when it came back up there was no internet activity, and things started cooling down, back to normal again.
Though I'm no techie, this seems to me like my computer has been hijacked by some virus that has taken control of the airport and is feeding me lies about the internet connection status, so that it can use my computer for sending out its own messages. Has anyone heard of a virus that prevents the airport from being turned off, and what should I do about it? I'm afraid to back up my data with my time machine, though its been months since that was done, for fear I'd overwrite a virus-free state of the time machine files with a virus laden one, but I also hate to do something to clean up the machine without backing up my files, and lose a bunch of data. Is there virus protection software that could surgically search out and remove only the virus from my machine and leave most everything else untouched?
    Any advice is welcome,
    Christina

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
    Try Changing the Airport Channel
Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a computer using Mac OS X.
Select the device you’re setting up, and then click Manual Setup. Enter the base station password if necessary
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
Choose a new channel from the Channel pop-up menu.

Thank you.  There is a bigger issue.  It is not the web page that is the problem.  It is that I can see my mouse moving and can move it along the bottom toolbar and the options will highlight but I can't click on anything.  I can see the apple icon to get to force quit but cant click on it.
I used your suggestion and force quit came up but I can't select the option to force quit... not even with my arrows and enter/return key.  Any other thoughts?
    Thank you.

  • Problem after 10.6.6 update! MDS running from the start on activity monitor

    Hello,
I have a iMac late 2009 and yesteday <unfortunately> I did the update 10.6.6! Before everything was working great cause I care the system with clean my iMac and other applications everyday and mostly I use recording programs like Pro Tools. After update the restart came and iMac's CPU was jumping at 20-30% without touching anything! I saw on Activity Monitor and <mds> was running! I want to ask what is that and how I can remove it and not running all the time. I close it from Activity Monitor every time the system starts but I want to remove it and don't see it as it wasn't before! After reading other topics, I did verify and repair permissions from Disk Utility and Mac Osx disc but mds starts when system boot.

This problem started happening to me on both my iMacs as well. I have a brand new 27" 3.06 Core2Duo which started to experience boot and shutdown problems after running the 10.6.6 update. My 21.5 3.06 Core2Duo (have had for just over a year) is suffering quite a bit more. My 21.5" iMac has Bootcamp installed, as mentioned in this thread and at the following thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12968046#12968046
I had noticed extremely sluggish behavior and many cases of the spinning wheel of lost hope. I run MenuMeters, so noticed a higher than usual CPU utilization - looking into Activity Monitor, mds was taking between 30% and 50% of my CPU.... ordinarily that shouldn't be a problem, but since that is Spotlight's indexer, I imagine there was IO contention. I plan on removing Bootcamp this weekend (don't really use it anymore thanks to Parallels 6).
Additionally, I have experienced horrible WiFi performance on both iMacs since updating. I have seen a few mentions on the Internet about this, but no real official acknowledgement. My icon in the Menubar indicates that the connection is still solid, however, I'm unable to resolve websites, etc. I assume that it is losing its connection momentarily to my router, and not reresolving with DHCP upon reconnect. This problem seems to be pretty repeatable when I use Fast User Switching... Anyone else having this problem? I have ruled out my router, as my Windows box and Linux laptops have zero issues. I hope Apple is resolving this issue -- making me eat my words when I told my wife that we HAD to go Mac since its so much more reliable!

  • My server doesn't start without monitor (UEFI system)

    Hallo folks!
I have a problem with my new Gigabyte J1800N-D2H motherboard: the computer doesn't start if there is no screens at the startup.
I can't find any log about this fact...
I can't connect with ssh, ping doesn't pong and there aren't R/ARP packages on the lan.
Also I didn't find any option into UEFI system.
    What I could check?
    Thanks all

Can you more accurately describe the problem? You have sshd running, but when you boot if a monitor is not connected, you cannot ssh in?
What does "computer doesn't start" mean? Doesn't boot at all? Boots but chokes at some point?
I can't see where is the problem because the machine doesn't apprear online: no ssh, no ping; moreover, no logs were saved.
On the other hand, if the monitor is connected no errors are shown

  • Application hangs on quit, but doesn't appear in Activity Monitor

When I tried to quit an application, it became not responding. The Dock and the Force Quit Applications window showed that it's still running, but there's no entry with the application name in Activity Monitor.
Trying force quitting by right-clicking at the dock icons as well as using Cmd-Option-Esc didn't help. Neither did using the command "killall process_name" in Terminal. (It said there's no such process running)
The problem happened to all kinds of application, from Firefox, iTunes, to Microsoft Word, so I think it's the OS fault.
I couldn't restart, shutdown the OS or log out when this happened.
The problem has just arisen earlier this week.
Please help me solve it. Thanks.

    Hi vnt;
Well it sounds like something is corrupt. It could either be the preference files or the system. So creating another user is the fastest way to determine which that I know.

Any ideas? Because I have no idea, what is happening.
Edit (08.08.2008): All right, don't bother answering this question anymore. The problem is no longer important. This topic can be closed, since it won't be solved.
(I think it was caused by some error during copying files while updating my system.)

    Problem solved - thanks!
Only question left is:What are the correct permissions for /tmp since I'd like to set them back to default.
