Activity Monitor is Missing!!

OK, I'm a dunce. Can't find AM in utilities, and it's nowhere to be found on the disks that came with the computer (new MacBook) Any ideas on where to get this utility?

Download the shareware utility Pacifist from www.macupdate.com or www.versiontracker.com. Use it to extract a fresh copy from the file archives on your OS X Installer Disc. The archives are in the /System/Installation/ folder.

    Hey Claudenir,
    This note will help you.
Remember subject profile consists of catalogue, codes and so on.

  • Activity Monitor Dock Icon - Memory - Missing

Why is the Memory option for the Activity Monitor Dock Icon missing now in Mavericks?
Why would Apple remove this feature?
I was happily using this little pie chart for a Dock Icon to keep track of overall memory usage on my system.
Has anyone else found a solution to bring this back?

Yes, thanks for the confirmation. I did some googling and found more people with eight-cores who could not view more than one bar in the dock icon.
I understand that showing eight bars in the icon might've been unreadable, but I would have preferred that they show two bars for the dual processors, instead of leaving us with one bar. I'll have to look into some alternate utilities, but it's a shame Apple decided to regress functionality on their top-end machines.

  • Activity Monitor - missing added memory

Just dropped 4 1GB sticks in my PMG5 in addition to the 4 512MB sticks already in there.
ASP correctly sees the sticks and reports total RAM as 6GB. But the "System Memory" tab in Activity Monitor still reports as there being only 2GB total memory.
I've seen this come up a few times before, and although some kind-meaning souls have posted multiple links to long discussions describing in detail the differene between Wired, Active, Inactive amd Free Memory in Activity Monitor - completely failing to understand the issue, there's never been any resolutions. It's affecting me in OSX 10.3, and there have been threads where this has happened in OSX 10.4.
Not seen any threads with it happening in OSX 10.5 - in fact my Mac Pro took the upgrade to 10GB and then 24GB in its stride under 10.5.
Anyone who has had this found a resolution ? I'm presuming that it's some sort of Activity Monitor cache, or System cache used by AM to get the RAM total.
I bet if I swapped around all the 512MB sticks with the 1GB sticks (still keeping matched pairs) it'd fix itself. But that's not the issue.

Perhaps the RAM isn't configured correctly for the PowerMac G5 model
you have; in that you may have to forgo the 512MB chips and try larger
in their place. And check the specifications on the RAM, too; just in case.
Max RAM: 4.0 GB (dual 1.8 GHz) or 8.0 GB (dual 2.0 GHz+)
    Type of RAM slots: 4 (dual 1.8 GHz) or, 8 - PC-3200 (dual 2.0 GHz+) 2.5v,
unbuffered, 8-byte, non-parity 184-pin DDR SDRAM (matched pairs.)
One of the standard practices when changing RAM configurations, has
been to re-set the PRAM afterward, to be sure it registers correctly.
That it appears on one location while not fully in another, is some indicator
of some kind or another. Too bad there isn't more information on which
chips are being shown in the instance of only 2GB appearing. If there were
a way to know the slot locations of those 2GB, and study the chips in them,
something may be learned about this situation; or at least an additional clue.
In some of my old tower computers that could take many RAM chips, some
times there would be dust or fingerprint oils on the electrical contacts and
a careful cleaning and firm re-installation helped make better connections.
I'm wondering if some of the RAM you have may be sub-standard in a way.
There are some RAM utilities to check and test RAM; not sure which ones
are current nowadays, since I tried rember or some other one a few years
ago and it did not help me find a defective RAM. Multiple tasking forced a
bad chip to appear by acting up, when it would kernel panic under a load.
Hopefully someone with direct experience in this matter will reply.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Mavericks Activity Monitor Missing Functionality

I'm a developer who loves to keep track of application and system resources to be sure I'm making effective use of them both during the development process, but also to ensure that users of the software will have a good user experience and not be wasting RAM, CPU, etc, unnecessarily.  So the Activity Monitor is a fantastic tool to stay on top of everything at all times.  When I upgraded to Mavericks, I lost 3 key abilities that I use 24 hours/day and never shut off:
    1) Ability to view memory usage in the Dock icon. I realize you can view it in the Memory tab on the main window, but the Dock icon allows you to display memory there, so you can use the main windows for network utilization.
    2) Network utilization under Mountain Lion showed in very easy graphical representation the exact amount of KB/sec or MB/sec of network throughput as a line graph. Keeping that window open and tucking in a corner of one of your monitors allows for constant tracking of network bandwidth usage, so you always know how much bandwidth you're consuming at any given moment with a quick glance.
    3) CPU utilization horizontal floating window. I realize they still have the vertical bar floating window representation, but where has the horizontal representation gone?  I preferred that view as it takes up less screen realestate.  This feature is gone in Mavericks.
With these 3 different views open and viewable at all times, you can keep close track of RAM, CPU, and network bandwidth.  And all 3 of these views are gone in Mavericks!  Can we please have them back?  These are serious usability and efficiency tools that we've come to rely upon.

Yes,   I have a similar question,  but particularly wanting the VERTICAL  CPU usage  FLOATING bar back.  (still relevant to the Horizontal CPU usage bar of course).      Here is the link to my post/question:

    good luck.

  • Business Activity Monitoring for BPEL Processes

    Hello,
IEP is capable of monitoring real time events, Real time business event collection and processing.
In that case, can we use IEP to monitor BPEL process activities with activity data.
One very big part, the ability to provide functionality for third parties (clients like Me) to register some sort of observer to capture live BPEL process activity, is missing.
I'm trying to cover that big hole in my project. That's the reason I'm posting about BPEL process management capabilities and events.
But I got no concrete answers for that. Not every business use can be provided by any generic system.
I looked at CAM (which comes with Alaska build). But I couldn't get much info about entire picture.
Other BPEL engines, the one I have used, has the functionality to do activity monitoring and process management. (IBM Process server, Apache ODE)
Could any IEP, BPEL component developers answer any sort of solution to my use case?
    Thank you
    Raja

I agree that this would be very useful. If anyone can provide additional insight it would be much appreciated.

  • Activity Monitor Freezes

Since installing Leopard I have been getting Activity Monitor freezes. I have to quit the application and relaunch to get it going again. Happens every 30 minutes or so.
Anyone else have the lockup? Any clues to fixing the problem?

Welcome to the Mac world. Basic Mac user rule: don't move Apple apps or utilities from where Apple installs them. Basic problem isn't what you ran into, but future updates won't occur because the installer ignores anything not in the correct location.

  • How to add Activity Monitor to top Toolbar

The last step of most workflows is to Export. By that time, I grow a little tired and impatient. It takes time if you are exporting dozens of versions.
How can I configure Aperture with the a button for Activity Monitor at the top?

O.k., go to the "View" menu and use the command "Customize Toolbar".
Drag an "Activity" icon to the Toolbar.  Sorry, I missed it the first time I searched the "Customize Toolbar" menu.

  • Newbie having problems with noisy fan and high CPU usage in Activity Monitor

I am new to the world of Apple and have got my hands on a hand-me-down PowerBook G4 version 10.4.11. It works fairly well for everything but the Internet.
One of the first symptoms i noticed was that watching stuff on youtube was slow and jumped a lot. I checked a few things out and looked the CPU usage in activity monitor and this was about 80% to 100% when on youtube or even moving from page to page. I'e tried loads of stuff including repairing disk permissions, emptying caches and relaunching finder when the preferences file is on the desktop (not really sure what that was supposed to do).
The next thing I discovered was that if i disconnected the laptop from the mains and played youtube and some other applications the whole thing would go into sleep mode very quickly. I have got temperature monitor downloaded now although I already know it is getting very hot.
PS when it heats up the fan turns on because I can hear a whirring sound...
Would really appreciate some insight into this as it seems to be a good runner otherwise.
PS2 I have loads of free space left in the disk usage tab in activity monitor.
    Big thank you in advance

Welcome to the world of PowerBook!

Virtually no G4s are dealing well with web video anymore. The video technology used by modern developers puts a huge strain on a G4 processor. As this a choice made by coders, there is not much you can do about it. Some people suggest adding RAM but the effect is marginal considering it's the processor that's taxed.
Notebooks get hot. The fans in my 1Ghz 17-inch PowerBook from 2003 kick in between 130 and 140°F. The danger point is not until in the vicinity of 100F so don't sweat it to much. Make sure you do not cover the case bottom by setting the computer on a thick cloth placemat, pillow or other bedding item, or on your lap without a lapboard. The bootom of the case is part of the heat dissipation system and needs air under it to work
A lot of PowerBooks have, by now, lost some or all of their "feet" that gve a little space under the case. Don't bother looking for official replacements--get the silicone door/drawer bumpers from the hardware store that stick on. I found some about 3/16" thick that let more air under my PB thatn the mostly missing originals.
The next thing I discovered was that if i disconnected the laptop from the mains and played youtube and some other applications the whole thing would go into sleep mode very quickly
Your battery is likely dead from old age. Batteries only last about 2-3 years. You are seeing a sign of the battery lacking sufficient remaining capacity to run the computer. Get this utility:
    http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery/
(you'll need the 2.6.6 version for Tiger) and post what is says about "Health" and "Cycles."

  • Activity Monitor won't run after leopard install

The only problem i'm having is that when i try and load Activity Monitor it bounces once and crashes. No amount of relaunches and reset/relaunches fixes the problem.
Any ideas? I've also tried launching the old tiger version of Activity Monitor that is on one of my SuperDuper backup external drives, but no luck.
    Thanks,
    Conrad

I apologize for the poor formatting. I did a filter for Activity and found these references to the crash. It looks like i'm missing a framework required for displaying the graphs that activity monitor uses. Any advice on how to go about replacing that?
    Thanks

  • Activity Monitor issue

I have been using Activity Monitor more lately to stop Norton anti-virus automatic scan from scanning my Ipod because it takes too long to check it and usually ends up freezing when doing it. But just recently Activity Monitor has just stopped working, I click on the application and it bounces a few times in the dock and does not start up. How can I fix this issue?

just to sort out the easiest possible cause: have you verified that it not just the acitvity window that has gone missing? If that would be the case you would see Activity Monitor in the Menubar and could choose Window -> Activity Monitor or press  1 to get the windows back.
If that is not the case, is there a relevant (crash) log entry in the console?

  • Activity monitor functionality, suspending tasks

Obviously, any process can be killed using Activity Monitor by pressing the big red icon in the upper left... but what about suspending a process? On the command line, it's CTRL-Z. I really wish there was a "pause" button in Activity Monitor. Am I missing something?
    chris

You're not missing anything. It's just not possible to do that with Activity Monitor.
Feel free to submit a feature request to Apple.
    Hope this helps...

  • Re-install utility, activity monitor only

can someone help me to reinstall activity monitor as the original support and or library files are corrupted or missing (7yr old "assistant" at work)
I do NOT want to reinstall the whole osx, only activity monitor.
    thanks very much.

    bluezedd,
The Console Log message begs the question, and I know you previously repaired permissions, but have you tried to permissions repair one more time after you reapplied the Combo Update?
The setuid root message seems to point to ownership issues, but I am not the one to speculate or make recommendations at that level of the system.
The "7yr old "assistant" at work" appears to have done more damage than would be expected with a simple removal of Activity Monitor.
I know that you said that you did NOT want to reinstall the the whole OS, but considering the time that you have already spent on this problem, I would suggest that an Archive and Install of Panther followed by the application of the Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.9, would be the best course of action.
I have successfully used Archive and Install on my G3 iMac when I replaced the Hard Drive, and I was impressed by the fact that all user settings and preferences remained intact.
Whatever you decide, make sure you are properly backed up.
    Good Luck.
    ;~)

  • Updates break Activity Monitor (Mac Pro & G4)

After applying the recent updates to my Mac Pro Quad Xeon and my G4 dual 800, both running 10.4.11, Activity Monitor does not work on either machine. On double-clicking, I get the launch animation and the Dock expands for less than a second, but the application does not launch. Trashing the .plist file in the User domain prefs folder doesn't help. Neither does Repairing Permissions.
Conversely, Activity Monitor works fine on my iMac, running 10.5.5. All machines are networked via a Time Capsule – the iMac via AirPort, and the desktops directly via ethernet (Cat 5e).
Any ideas about what's gone wrong here?

  • Activity Monitor shows no apps in list

When I fired up Activity Monitor today, there are no apps listed in the Application window.
Clearly I am missing something but I've been using AM since 10.0. I am showing All Processes but no matter which tab I click at the bottom of the window, I do not see any applications.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Since there's no applications window, just processes, exactly what are you not seeing?? Additionally, there's nothing dealing with applications when selecting any of the five bottom tabs. What are you expecting??
