Activity Monitor Keeps Locking Up

Every time I try to access the activity monitor, I get the SBOD. How do I fix this?

Open the Console application and look for log entries made around the last time you tried to open the Activity Monitor. If the logs tell you that pmTool isn't setuid, use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to repair your permissions and try again. If you get another message, post back with the complete text of that message.

    @dovn
I red the page, the fact is that I'm not able to figure out what's causing the problem
the application freezes in any occasion, even when the mac was just turned on..
could it be that it's somehow in conflict with an other process running in background?!
Sometime conflict occur, but I doubt with Activity Monitor.
I was thinking of maybe I could just insert the OSX application disk that came with the macbook and trying that way reinstalling the app?!
Did your machine come with Snow? Anyway, I would do a repair install of Sno by installing Sno over Sno as in an upgrade install. Such an install, while usually very safe, still is an install so be appropriated backed up if you proceed. You will need to reinstall 10.6.1 and 10.6.2 after the repair install. Do so using only the [10.6.2 combo updater|http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959].This approach might fix any corruption leading to your problem.

Restart the computer from Apple menu.
When restart dialog box appears, uncheck the box beside
"Reopen windows when logging back in".

Nope, I don't have a "/Users/charon/Library/Mobile Documents" directory, let alone anything underneath it. Is that like an iCloud thing or something?  I tend to avoid the Apple-supplied services when I can (I don't use iTunes either unless I can help it).
As an update, as of about two days later this problem seems to have solved itself. Possibly sleeping and waking did something to it (though that seems unlikely given how many times I rebooted), or else there was just some long-*** kernel process that finally worked itself out.  But my system CPU is back down to normal and the cursor freezes are gone.
    ??? it is a mystery! ???

  • I ended a task on Activity Monitor on my iMac and now my desktop and dock keep restarting?

So, I was on Activity Monitor trying to see how I could speed up my computer and I found this application which was using up a large percentage of my memory so I decided to end it. I can't remember what it was called but now every so often my desktop turns grey and the dock disappears then they both restart themselves. I'm pretty sure it's to do with me ending that task and not a virus. If it is a virus then tell me, if not then does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Sorry didn't mean to press this solved my question, yeah I've restarted it loads of times! It's been happening for a couple of months now it's really strange because it should just restart itself if it's that essential! But it's still not working-.-

  • Why does my macbook pro keep showing me the force quit screen and states that there is not enough memory?  The activity monitor shows that there is plenty of memory available.

The message displayed in the Force Quit Applications window says "Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory.  The only applications that I have open are Safari and Finder and I am simply reading a discussion board.

It would appear that this error can be caused by an excessive system demand for swap space that exceeds the maximum allocation. Just try restarting the computer.
I found a possible solution for finding the cause of the error. Open Activity Monitor. Be sure you have the Real Memory column showing and the Processes dropdown menu set to All Processes. Select the Real Mem column and sort in descending order. Leave Activity Monitor open. The next time the error appears the application at the top of the column is the one causing the error.

  • Multicam keeps locking up after 12 minutes of perfection!

I'm having the weirdest problem with FCP's new multicam feature which I can't figure out if its a hardware limitation or a software problem.....
I've got 3 angles captured via OfflineRT, and I'm editing as if trying to make a "live" switch of the footage. For the first 12 minutes, it worked PERFECTLY. I was shocked and excited at how smooth my little project was coming together. Each edit being made exactly where I wanted it to. Happiness seemed inevitable.
Until I reach the 12 minutes point....
After that, it keeps locking up. The program doesn't crash, but it refuses to play. I get 5 seconds of video, then the spinning beach ball for 50 seconds. No edits recorded. No nothing. It brings my system to a screeching halt until I shut down and restart, only to continue once again after I open FCP.
What the heck is going on? It was working perfectly, then just - stopped, and hasn't sense. I've lowered playback resolution to 25%, changed everything to work at the lowest rate possible - I've done everything and anything to help free up memory. Nothing works. I delete all of my previous edits off the Multicam Timeline. No go. Absolutely nothing seems to make a difference... and I don't know what the heck to do!
I'm running on a PowerBook G4 867, 1.12 Gigs of RAM. I know it's slow, but I've cut two feature films on this thing with no problems until now. I almost want to believe the hardware is just getting too old for FCP5.... but why would it work for 12 minutes then just stop?
Any help would be much appreciated!!

Hey Patrick! Thanks for writing back so fast.
    1. It's after 12 minutes in the timeline.... that's when all the trouble started. Of course, at this point, it won't even work at all. Stops playing at the exact same place every time.
    2. Activity Monitor says only 16% of the CPU is being used by FCP, and 692 megs of RAM is being used overall. Doesn't seem to be maxxing out....
    3. The file size of the project is huge.... which sort of baffles me. 9.2 megs. Features I've edited have smaller project sizes than that, with 5 times the amount of edits. What the heck is going on???

  • For the average person what really is the point of the activity monitor app when all you really want to know is whether your mac is running at its best?

I have had my imac for nearly 18 months now,
It's okay, is the best I can say about it.
    It cost me around £800+
So recently (and foolishly!) I downloaded OS Mavericks when I was actually looking for a freebie word processor programme (I got Bean because it's simple like me.)
Now the point of all this is that Mavericks has new features like a redesigned Safari (But I ain't noticed any difference yet) and Imaps (Huh!) and Ibooks and Imovie or something.
So when you are oldish like me, you really don't want people to keep changing and introducing new stuff (most of which is pointless anyway) all the time; because it takes us old ***** a while to get used to the last "improvement."
So you try and get rid of all these new apps that you don't want and didn't ask for anyway,
and then you find out you can't, because they're an integral part of the new OS.
    Brilliant!
Then you find that Mail has to redo itself and this thing no longer works properly etc. and you start wishing you hadn't got up that morning...
So you try and get it all back the way it was..
    And you can't.
Because you don't have an external hard drive to use the Time machine back up facility.
So you get in touch with Apple Support and it's now nearly bedtime, but at least you feel like you might be gettin' somewhere.
You talk to the supportguy and suddenly you can't remember what the problem is and what your name is, and you're thinking you might as well order in a pizza seein' as you've drunk the last of the gin..."
Anyway the guy manages to keep his temper and you get some degree of order restored but the machine still seems "jumpy" so someone says to you
"Check out the Activity Monitor! That'll tell you if something's not working right."
So you do, but it doesn't.
Just a bunch of numbers and CPU stuff and User Idiot Input etc.
All you really want is some little box to pop up and say,
"Hey! yyyou've really ssscrewed things upppp-p here, old mmmmman!!. This programme is no longer functioning properly, that thing appears to frozen, and you just wiped half your saved photos of Aunt Jessie's 94th birthday celebration (the one's where she had her eyes open)..
Press here for a full maintenance overview and repair menu.."
By this time you are on the floor, your leg's got cramp and you really really need a pee.
But there ain't no maintenance programme, just an activity monitor app you can't make any sense out of, so you yank the **** power cord out of the socket and go to bed..
    So you try and

DVD-R media that is single layer has 4.3 GB formatted capacity.
DVD+R DL media has 7.8 GB formatted capacity.
DVD-R double sided has 4.3 GB on each side.

  • Activity Monitor shows very little free space.  Help?

I am wanting to do Photoshop Creative Suite 6 on my MacBook Pro and everything is running SO SLOW!  I have opened the Activity Monitor to check things out.  I am not a computer expert at all, so I have included some information below in hopes that this will help dissect the problem.
It seems to me that the following numbers are  high and I am wondering if I can TRASH anything that is taking up too  much space?  What programs on my MacBook Pro are taking up SO MUCH space? When I open my computer, I only start running FireFox and Entourage.  Should I get rid of other icons in my dock that are not running?  By being on the dock, does this use RAM?
I had a lot of pictures on iphoto and I moved them all to an external hard drive.
I have emptied the iphoto trash and double-clicked the actual trash can to delete everything!
I don't have any third party software on my computer.  I have heard that this can be bad, so I don't have any of that.
I did purchase Mac Cleaner (or something similar) several years ago, and it caused MAJOR problems on my computer.  I had to start from scratch and set up everything again with the help of a great MAC products person on the phone. I want to TRASH anything that is taking up extra space (cashe) but I don't want to buy a third party "MAC Cleaning" product.
    I have a Mid- 2009 MacBook Pro
Processor: 2.26 GHz Intel Core  2 Duo
    Memory:  2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics:  NVIDIA GeForce 9400M  256 MB
    Software:  OSX 10.8.5
It also shows in the "About the Mac" that L2 Cache is 3 MB.  This seems high for the cashe.  Can this be cleaned up somehow?
I realize that the following numbers fluctuate, but gave the "ballpark" numbers as they are coming up now.
The GREEN portion of the "pie" is almost non-existent.  The % User fluctuates between 5.00 and 8.00.  The RED % System is at about 2.50.  The Black % Idle fluctuates between 80.00 and 90.00.
The System Memory FREE (Green) is at about 104.0 MB.  The ACTIVE is at 758.2 MB.   The INACTIVE is at about 646.0 MB.  USED:  1.90 GB.

Since your computer is five years old there is no warranty to negate.  If if there were, replacing the RAM in a MacBook Pro would not void the warrantly.  If you update the RAM, keep the old RAM just in case.
The new RAM is a $100 investment.  Compare that to a Retina MBP with 8 GB of RAM for $1,400 (128 GB SSD) or $1,500 (256 GB SSD).  Your choice.
Take a look at the free tutorial at http://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook on replacing RAM in your MBP to see if you think it is easy enough for you.  I expect you will.
On a 2009 MacBook (not Pro) I recently upgraded the RAM to 8 GB and the disk to an SSD and it improved the boot time and application start times dramatically.  Now it runs most things as fast as my MacBook Air.  It even boots faster than my MBA.  That was about a $200 investment.  So I my expereince is it is worth updating older Macs.
Rather than installiing an expensive SSD, you can boost the speed of the disk dramatically to SSD-like speeds for about $110.
I am referring to the Seagate 1T Hybrid SSHD 2.5” drive selling for about $110 on Amazon.  It includes an 8 GB SSD cache that really speeds up your I/O and with 1 TB of storage you should never run out of disk space.
It is fairly easy to replace the disk yourself, especially if you purchase the following inexpensive kits:
    Toolkit: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/TOOLKITMHD/ (referenced above)
    USB 2.0 disk enclosure: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/ES2.5BPU2S/
Again, go to ifixit.com for a tutoral on replacing the disk.
    Porting the data is easy:
Install the new drive in the external enclosure.
Boot the Recovery Partition (Boot then hold down Command and R simultaneously).
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
(If your system came with installation disks, boot from them.)
Use the Disk Utility Partition tab to format the drive Mac OS Extended (journaled) with a GUID partition.
Disk Utility > Partition > Partiton Layout: Singe Partition > Options… > GUID Partition Table > OK > Name: Macintosh HD2 > Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled) > Apply >
    Erase tab > Name: Macintosh HD2 > Security Options… > single pass of zeroes > OK > Erase…
(Wait, this will take a long time.)
Clone the existing drive onto the new one:
Disk Utility > Restore > Source "Macintosh HD” or whatever the old system disk is named.
    > Destination: “Macintosh HD2” or whatever you named it.
    > Restore
(Wait.  This well take some time.)
Physically swap the two drives using the tutorial above.
    Boot normally.
Save the old disk as an archived backup until you are sure you don’t need it.
Be sure to backup your system before any software updates or hardware upgrades.

  • Spinning Ball 4 1 App. + No Activity Monitor!?

So I'm having some issues with my G4, running 10.3.9. It is having real problems accessing a certain file and program. I haven't quite been able to reason it down to some corrupt application or file...I believe the problem is bigger than that.
Not sure what I did, but I can't download anything with my download manager Speed Download! I get the spinning-ball-of-death when I try to open or run S.D. I get the same spinning-ball when I try to open the folder where S.D. stores it's downloaded files.
I've unistalled the application and deleted/changed the download folder that S.D. uses. I figure this would cancel out any corrupt files within the app; however, when I try to open the new version of Speed Download it starts the process and then just spins. I can't click on anything to do with the app. But everything else on the machine functions as normal.
Other issues: I have no ability to open Activity Monitor to find out more about the computer's processes. And I get the same spinning ball when I try to open Console, so I can't look to the log files.
I've tried repairing permissions and optimizing the directories with Disk Warrior, but don't know which way to turn.
    Any advice is good advice,
    Thanks,
    Ben
    800 MHz Powermac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1.25 GB RAM + Multiple drives

    Question regarding this continuing problem...
It seems that it is a font corruption problem. I would love to be able to root out the corupt fonts and keep the rest. I can temporarily remove the fonts, or move them to another folder, but this is temporary!
I have tried to resolve duplicate fonts, and disable fonts (even delete) fonts within Font Book. I have used Font Finangler to "clean the cache" of my fonts.
But Speed Download is back to not working. And Word lists corrupt fonts whenever I open it, new ones each time. I've tried deleting the listed fonts from within my main library with Font Book, and erased theOffice font cache before rebooting.
Any easy programs that would allow me to keep the majority of my collected fonts? Do they continue to infect other fonts; spreading like a virus?
    Thank you,
    it is frustrating,

  • Compressed memory showing 0% in activity monitor

On one of my Mac Mini's (late 2012), upgraded to 16GB RAM, I keep getting out of memory messages when running apps and on checking the activity monitor it is showing 0% for all running apps under the compressed memory column. I'm running OS-X 10.10.3.
Any ideas on what's going on here? I've tried resetting the NVRAM....

The system isn't compressing memory because is doesn't yet need to; 16GB is pretty generous. The 'Memory' column includes shared memory (system libraries) so there can be a lot of 'double counting' in the figures. You can control+click on the 'Memory' column headers to get other measures.
Try opening Safari and open a dozen tabs with different complicated pages in each one of them, e.g. some pages news.bbc.co.uk. I'm sure you'll be able to start compression eventually.
Meanwhile, your original issue is a bug, or corrupted file, associated with Solibri Model Viewer. You'll probably need to contact its developer for assistance as I doubt that enough users will be reading this forum for you to get an answer here.

  • MacPro sees 16g mem but Activity Monitor Only Shows 8 Gig

I have 4 simms of 4GB mem in my 2008 MacPro. I always thought all was ok as "About this Mac" shows 16GB of mem. But when I run Activity Monitor, the System Memory pie chart says I have 8GB. Is there another way to confirm how much mem is being recognized by my MacPro?
I only discovered this when running "icleanmemory" from the app store, and noticing I only ever have approximately 3GB free at any one time. Looks like my Mac is not seeing at least 8Gig of mem EVEN THOUGH "About this Mac" clearly shows 16GB.

And not just a reboot, but boot in Safe Mode.
Sometimes a clean install or reinstall over what you have, because a few people (a fraction of a fraction) had a system problem
Some background tasks dont' uninstall, not easily.
They get added to launch services and have to be removed through launchd

  • Activity Monitor Won't Run

Anyone else having this problem? Activity monitor will simply not run. It starts, then crashes...every time.

Me, too! Since upgrading to SL & then immediately to 10.6.2 a couple days ago.
Well, it won't run - it didn't crash, it just hung on startup. I tried repairing permissions and, after finding this thread, removed the plist file suggested, but no luck. I just realized I should check the log (Console), and found it was putting out this, over and over again:
    12/13/09 11:28:47 AM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.ActivityMonitor[4828]) posix_spawn("/Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app/Contents/MacOS/activitymonitord", ...): No such file or directory
And exiting, then retrying every 10 seconds.
I opened the Activity Monitor package to confirm that activitymonitord is there, but upon rereading the message I realized it's telling me Activity Monitor needs to be in the utilities folder - and I had moved it into a subdirectory (to declutter my Utilities folder). It always worked there in previous systems, but apparently SL's Activity Monitor has a hard-coded address built in.
I moved AM back to where Apple wants it and it immediately opened. Don't know if this helps anyone else, but I thought I'd put this out there in case it does . . .
(Yes, I know you "should" leave programs where Apple puts them and keep your files in your user folder, but I just like to do things my way whenever I can get away with it.)

  • Activity monitor does not show on all desktops/spaces

    Hi,
I like to see what my processor load is and so I keep activity monitor running all the time, and I like to be able to see what's happening regardless of which Desktop/Space I'm working in at the time.  So I right clicked the activity monitor in the dock and selected Options->All desktops.  But although that works in the other apps I've tried, Activity monitor refuses to exist in more than one desktop.  Anyone know what to do about it?  It used to work in Snow Leopard, but isn't in Lion for me.
    thanks!

It works for me with one quirk. If I go to empty Desktop 2 it appears, if I return to Desktop 1 it's hidden behind other windows.
