Activity Monitor problems increase CPU and power burn

Migration Assistant worked very nicely, transferring from a Powerbook G4 with 30GB of files and data in about 45min via Firewire.
However, after 2 days of usage, the CPU was still running at 80% and applications were incredibly sluggish. My battery calibration at full charge only showed a little over 1 hour. Activity Monitor also would not show any processes -- the list was completely blank.
The solution was to rename the Preferences folder, allowing programs to create a new Preferences folder. I then selectively populated the new folder with the main old preferences for mail, Safari, etc. This not only solved the Activity Monitor problem, but immediately drove down the CPU usage to about 10% where I'd expect it. Now the battery shows over 2.5 hrs on a full charge with the screen on full brightness (and it's BRIGHT!)
Also, Microsoft Word/Powerpoint/Excel/Entourage: trial software on the MacBookPro will mess up your migration, so delete the trial software BEFORE MIGRATION ASSISTANT.
Hope this helps some of you out there!

Another thing users who run Migration Assistant should know is that many of your background processes and helpers may slow down the Macbook.
For example, I notice that a bunch of PowerPC menu items running under Rosetta slowed things down. Also, the Microsoft Office Autoupdate background process, which is started from System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items constituted one Rosetta process running all of the time.
When I remove/disabled these background processes, I noticed a significant difference.

  • I ended a task on Activity Monitor on my iMac and now my desktop and dock keep restarting?

So, I was on Activity Monitor trying to see how I could speed up my computer and I found this application which was using up a large percentage of my memory so I decided to end it. I can't remember what it was called but now every so often my desktop turns grey and the dock disappears then they both restart themselves. I'm pretty sure it's to do with me ending that task and not a virus. If it is a virus then tell me, if not then does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Sorry didn't mean to press this solved my question, yeah I've restarted it loads of times! It's been happening for a couple of months now it's really strange because it should just restart itself if it's that essential! But it's still not working-.-

  • Activity Monitor Problem

    Hi all,
Have had my macbook since christmas now and everything has been great, until about 3 days ago when activity monitor just stopped working, I open it, then it appears on the dock and disappears a second later! No window pops up, just the icon on the dock.
Anyone got any ideas what the problem might be? I don't really want to go through the rigmarole of a re-install
Ps, I haven't made any changes to the mac recently so I am stumped as to what might have caused it!?

Does the icon stay in the dock? I noticed that if you close the Activity Monitor window and then close the program, the next time you open it, the program will launch but no window will appear. Try this:
    Open Activity Monitor.
Select Window in the menu bar and click Activity Monitor. This should bring a new Activity window up for you.
If the problem is that it launches and then immediately shuts down (disappears from the dock), I would run a maintenance program like Onyx and then restart.

  • Problems checking activity monitor to increase battery length

When I try to check it to see if there are any applications running that are eating up my battery power it says that I can't open it due to possible damage or incomplete. What do I do now. My battery will only last a max of 45 minutes. How can I increase it. Thanks

I have set the power management options to maximize battery conservation and set the screen brightness to 45%. Bluetooth and airport are also turned off.
I ran a timer program to determine exactly how long the battery was lasting. First test was with 30 minutes of regular surfing, then I turned off Airport and did normal word processing. I got a little over 3 hours total. The second test was watching a DVD movie which was 2.5 hours long, and the battery ran out at 2:07. Again, power settings, etc. optimized for conserving power. The third test was playing Age of Empires III, again with bluetooth and Airport turned off. Charge lasted only 2 hours this time.
This seems to be a far cry from the advertised 4.5 hours of surfing and word processing that Apple touts. My MacBook is brand new, has 2gigs of ram, I have calibrated the battery, and have applied AppleCare's battery optimization patch.
Does 2-3 hours fall outside of the acceptable ranges for battery life? Thanks for the input.

  • Software monitoring problem, increased latency?

I tested 8 in the studio yesterday, with a real band etc. There was a major problem though, try as I might I couldn't get a proper monitor signal for the singer using software monitoring(through Logic).
He complained about the horrible flanging/tremolo sound in his cans, whatever the hardware buffer size. I did all the usual tricks, checked that latency compensation was off, switched low latency mode on and off, etc. Nothing worked and I had to resort to hardware monitoring(meaning no reverb for the vocal while recording, not ideal but better than nothing).
I never had this problem with this singer with vs 7, I use a 128 sample buffer which gives acceptable results/no complaints.
I even switched the buffer to 64 with the i/o safety buffer on. Didn't fix the flanging problem, though I was pleasantly surprised audio worked without glitching/breaking up, as it normally does when using 64 with my FF800 and LP7.
BTW, it crashed the first time I used 'save a copy as' for project backup.
    Best,
    Zip
All this on my G5 2.7

    WuWei wrote:
There shouldn't be any flanging - just a delayed signal.
    Well, technically, yes, that's correct.
I think the term "flanging" or "chorusing" gets used a lot, because in the case of a vocalist, they can hear themselves "inside their head" as well as through the cue mix, and the latency, even a small amount, creates the illusion of a flanged or chorused signal.
All that said, I too, find the latency to be greater in version 8. Not a show stopper yet, but for those of us monitoring through the software, every little bit gets noticed.
It's discouraging to get a "new" and "improved" Logic, and have greater latency than before.
If I was the paranoid type, I'd believe Apple did that on purpose, to make us all want to go buy Apogee Symphony systems and new Intel Mac Pros...
Did I just say that out loud...?

  • Increasing speed and power on G4 to run Leopard

    Hello Everyone,
I have an old 533MHz Power PC G4 with 384 MB SDRAMM. I bought this computer back in 2000. I am trying to increase it's processing power to accommodate Leopard. My purposes are to use it as a node machine running alongside my 4x2.5 GHz PPC G5 with 16 GB DDR2 SDRAMM, while running Logic and I can't do that unless they are both running the same operating systems. My questions are as follows:
    1) Can I pull the memory in my G4 and replace it with the memory that I pulled out of my G5 some
    months back? (Wishful Thinking)!?
    2) If question one is not an option, could someone please direct me to the absolute best solution for increasing my G4's processing power so that I may use it as an effective node machine?
As always, thanks to the forum in advance.
    Chad

Here's the spec sheet on your G4 http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermacg4/stats/powermac_g4533.html
    #1 - No. The G4 uses PC133 RAM.
    #2 - Here's the *Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard installation system requirements*
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24950
You could add a faster processor (not cheap), since a processor speed of at least 867 MHz is required. Also you would need to add RAM, as 512MB is the minimum, but 1GB is really needed.
You would be better off getting a used G4 MDD with at least a 1GHz processor.
     Cheers, Tom

  • Multiple problems: Touch Screen and Power Button on my Iphone 4S.

My power button on my iphone will click but it doesn't recieve any response from my phone. Also, my screen isn't working at all. The only button that works is the home button. The phone is only a couple of weeks old. I recieved it in the mail from apple and it has run smoothly up until now. It is a very random occurence and I would like to have it resolved quickly. Any suggestions?

First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider should one appear until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.
Make an appointment at an Apple store to have the phone checked out. Or call Apple Support.

  • Weird Slow Perf. - Activity Monitor - Dock Problem

I have a Powerbook G4 that's been running insanely slow. I went through the troubleshooting steps to fix this, and opened the Activity Monitor to see what's been sucking up all the processing power on the CPU. To my surprise, the Dock application is using 60 to 80% of my CPU at any given time. I know Mac doesn't get viruses, but... is this a virus?

Not in my experience. However, if the Dock is showing a lot of activity, then I suspect that you're running widgets. Click on the Dashboard icon and turn them off (easiest way is to open the Activity Monitor, select the Dock, and quit it).

  • Activity monitor CPU history now shows single graph in Floating window - how to restore display of all eight (8) cores?

Since restarting, the Activity monitor floating CPU history Window now shows all eight cores collapsed into one. This is NOT the behavior I expected after doing some research and finding this article OS X: Activity Monitor shows one CPU Usage graph on systems with more than four cores - Apple Support
Not a show stopper but I've been investigating performance issues on a new machine and this "new" behavior has me flummoxed and suspecting a newbie error.
    Thanks!

Well, after a few more reboots and a therapeutic OS X 10.10.3 reinstall - troubleshooting some really sick performance issues. This problem has gone away. I am no longer staring a beachballs on my 8 core mini with 16GB RAM and an SSD boot drive. Should be good for a while :-)

  • Activity Monitor % User and % System do not add up

Looking at my iMac i7 Activity Monitor/ All Processes/ CPU I find that the % User and % System do not add up to showing the correct % Idle.
For example, a recent screenshot shows % user = 0.81, the % System = 0.41 and % idle shows 61.25. The CPU usage graph show nothing going on and the Process Name list shows nothing unusual.
This constantly changes - sometimes the figures add up to 100% but usually the % Idle can be anywhere from 40% to a correct 98 - 99% based on nothing of any consequence running.
I look at the Activity Monitor on my MacBook and % Idle shows correct addition and a constant 98 - 99%.
    What is going on?
    Thank you.

This afternoon, it will be an entire week without a crash on my Squeezebox system!
Totally removing Intego VirusBarrier X6 from my main computer (iMac i7) finally lets me enjoy my music again.
The main problem is that X6 does not provide feedback as to what it is doing so the user cannot adjust the settings. In other words, no specific message as to what X6 just prevented.
As a crash can occur anywhere from 10 minutes to 8 hours of play time, hit or miss setting adjustments waste an amazing amount of time. This has been going on for a year with the frequency of crashes escalating.
I had already entered all my music devices on the Trusted List and had set up rules for all the ports that Squeezebox uses. Still crashed.
There is no reason why Logitech and/or Intego engineers cannot provide security setup instructions. Unfortunately, Logitech only shows security help for PCs.
Well the nightmare is over. Amazing what free time I now have.
The next three paragraphs are for Squeezebox owners and may be of some help if you are having problems:
A crash (for me) is defined in many ways. The worst crash is when the Squeezebox device shuts off and only pulling the electric plug will revive it. Another crash shows itself when the next song only plays for about 1 second and goes to the next song endlessly until the device shuts off. The Logitech manual says move the device closer to the wireless point when this happens but if they are connected by ethernet cables, this advice is useless. Another crash is when three units are synced and one of them suddenly is no longer in sync and playing a different song.
Crashes can occur when units are in sync or not in sync. Connected wirelessly or by ethernet. And when a crash occurs, the loud 'crunching' noise that occurs is not kind to the speakers.
BTW, if some devices are in sync, make sure these devices are connected the same way - either all wirelessly or all by ethernet. If you don't, you will experience sound lags of about 1/2 second. A very annoying echo effect.

  • My MacBook Pro is slow, activity monitor says crash report using CPU

Hi, my MacBook Pro is running very slow. My activity monitor says high CPU usage by crash report. When i look at the system log MediaTek.winmax appears repeatedly with the word bug close by. • Problems with music and burning

Hi, Thanks for your interest in my problems. I have been using iDVD for years. Always the same copy/version. In the past day or so I've noticed two problems.
    1) When I go in to the media tab and select audio, it shows the top of my iTunes library and various play lists, but it won't show me the entire library by song. I tried to click on the library and music tabs to open it to view my songs, but it just starts to play the first song in the library. How can I get it back to allowing me to view my full iTunes library by song?
    2) This is even more important. I've tried to burn a video that I created in iMovie (6) as always. The DVD will not play in any of my DVD players in the house. I've always done everything the same way. Create the project in iMovie and share it to iDVD, select a 'theme', select the music (see problem #1 above) and hit burn. When it's completed it pops the DVD out and normally, but not yesterday or today, is says 'do I want to burn another disc' to insert it now. For the past two days, it has not given me this message. It says done. and it only gives me the option to cancel. When I hit cancel, it says 'cleaning up' and then never moves again. I have to 'force quit' it to be able to use the computer again.
These are critical issues as I'm trying to burn copies of some video I shot, in anticipation of being hired to do some projects. If I can't show what I've done, I don't stand a chance of getting the job.
Can anyone shed some light on my problems and more importantly, tell me how to fix them?

Your first issue sounds like a dimple dot problem. In your media/audio panel you will see a small dimple dot equidistant from the right and left sides of the panel. Put your cursor on it and drag it up or down to reveal the next display screen Underneath. In your case the dimple dot will be on the bottom, and you need to drag it upward to reveal the songs in your iTunes library.
Your second issue might be solved by using a different DVD brand, like Sony, Verbatim, or HP. But since you also are getting a "force quit" situation" I suggest that you delete iDVD preferences and do a permissions repair. Sometimes permissions and preferences can get corrupted. Whenever iDVD starts acting funny, a common maintenance procedure is to do the following: Delete preferences by closing iDVD and trashing the file com.apple.iDVD.plist found in User (the House icon)/Library/Preferences. Then do a permissions repair using the Utilities/Disk Utility App on your Mac. Open the Disk Utilities window and select the Mac hard drive icon at the top of the side pane at the left. Then click on the Repair Permissions button. When you have repaired permissions and deleted preferences, restart your computer and launch iDVD. iDVD will replace the .plist file that you deleted. Be sure also that you have sufficient free disk space on your hard drive for iDVD to function correctly. 15-20 GB often is recommended by users of this forum. After doing all of the above, relaunch iDVD and see whether you still have the problem.

  • MacPro Quad Core 32g Ram running slow Logic using only 9g in Activity Monitor

Well its taken a while, but this is my first foray into the world of forums! I'm so hacked off with this regular problem and havent been able to find anything anywhere to solve it i thought i'd see if anyone has any similiar issues and maybe even a solve to it.
So.... im an orchestrator and producer and after my mid 2008 Macbook Pro with 8g ram started freezing up i invested in this 3 years ago -
Mac Pro 2x 2.4ghz Quad Core intel Xeon and stuck in 32gb of lovely Crucial RAM and 3 seperate internal 1TB drives with one for operating system (10.6.8), one for Audio recording/saving and one for all my sample libraries.
32gb ram - should be enough i thought!
So i regularly run at least 30 VI's - Ni The giant, Spitfire Orchestral librabies (say 12 string instruments up to 0.69g per load) LASS strings, plus perc STYLUS, ABBEY road drums, Trillian basses (acoustic/electric), ominisphere etc etc. So pretty hefty sample instruments. But theyre sooo nice!!
In addition, the 32 bit server will come alive (NOT! So unstable i find) with my Waves plugs etc.
Looking at ACTIVITY MONITOR however i might be not touching 9 gig (and sometimes even less) of usage for Logic, and only say 800MB for 32 bit server and have NOTHING else open - and what do i find .....
    - Mouse lag and cant really do anything with the mouse whilst playing the track - cant adjust volume - too slow, zooming problems
    - Takes a good 2-3 seconds for track to stop playing
Dont get System OVERLOADS so much, its just that the system goes REALLLLLY slow.
    What ive tried- - -
    - Running Mountain Lion off another drive (havent had time to install it and wanted to be sure everything worked etc)
    - Tried all audio prefs - large/small buffers/threads etc and yes i am on 1024.
in a nutshell how come with 32g RAM everything is so slow when barely using 10g of that???????
I dread getting to the end of a project cos i know im gonna be freezing so much, but with so much editing all the time for the orchestral parts i need everything unfrozen and working.
Sorry if this is long winded but wanted to describe what im experiencing.
Any feedback most welcome! Thankyou in advance.

    Hi
    A few thoughts:

The 32bit server is a pita: Waves v9 are 64bit  compatible (they run fine). 32 bit VI's can be run outside Logic using Vienna Ensemble Pro (see later)

Some of these VI's are extremely CPU hungry: Abbey Rd drums for example, really do hammer the CPU. What does Logic's Performance meter show in the way of CPU load. What does Activity Monitor show regarding CPU load?
With 32G of RAM, this should not be the issue, but you might have general CPU problems (see above), and you may also have Sample disk streaming limitations if all the Loibraries you mention are on the same drive. How does Activity Monitor look regarding disk access? You might find it helpful to add a second drive and split the sample libraries across 2 for faster disk access.
I presume that you have plenty of free space on the System drive?
Logic can get sluggish if the Undo info gets way too big, and also if there are loads of regions in the Arrange: check Options:Project Information.
Many are finding some benefits (me included) by running the VI's in Vienna Ensemble Pro:
Better CPU load distribution than directly in Logic
"Persistant Samples": they can remain loaded whilst you switch Logic Projects
Logic is effectively running much less itself, so generally flies.
32bit Plugs hosted separately in VEP so no 32bit Bridge issues in Logic
Something to consider, though perhaps not yet, would be setting up a Slave computer using VEP.
