Activity Monitor stoped working

My Activity Monitor just stoped working I deleted the perference and it just opens the closes I don't know what to do

Did you have Xcode installed at one point and then use the "/Developer/Tools/uninstall-devtools.pl" uninstall script to remove Xcode? There was a version of Xcode that would try to install the GraphKit.framework, but would skip it because it found that a newer version of the GraphKit.framework was already installed (as part of the OS X installation). When you then ran the "uninstall-devtools.pl" uninstall perl script, it would mistakenly remove the GraphKit.framework even though the Xcode installer never installed that.
That would then cause problems like Activity Monitor crashing as well as other apps that were linked to that private framework.
To fix this, follow the advice that Neil's link gave. (You should be able to use Pacifist to extract the GraphKit.framework from your original install disk, and then use the combo update for your current version of OS X to further bring that framework up to date).
Hope this helps....

  • How can I get Activity Monitor to work?

I've searched the discussions to no avail, so I have this question: how can I get Activity Monitor to work? It launches and its window opens but then the spinning beachball appears. I've checked the Console and it shows that the Activity Monitor is attempting to fully launch but then it "exits" and then it tries to fully start up again, goes into an infinite loop or something. Issued a "force quit" succesfully. I've deleted the Activity Monitor's .plist, no joy. What to do? Thanks!
    I'm running 10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro (late 2011)

I wish I could be more positive but I have no experience of MacBook Pros and whether their demands on the system differ from my simple iMac.   If you have the time to scour through 'More like this' ( to the right of your initial post) and the links within it, you may find leads.
I also found this thread via Google which in parts seems to echo your troubles.  I hope it helps; thank you for the star.

  • Activity Monitor not working correctly / not listing processes

When I open Activity Monitor, it does not display a list of processes. The CPU usage works in the bottom of the window as does the disk usage. None of the other graphs display any graphing/data.
I have rebooted, relaunched AM and I selected "all processes" but it still doesn't show processes.
I used the terminal command "top" and can see processes in the terminal window.
    thanks for any assistance,
    Harold
    imac 2.8 dual core/24"/2gb/os10.5.5

Thanks for the quick reply. I couldn't find the activity monitor preferences file you specified, in the Preferences directory. Here's what I've done: I rebooted from an older backup image on my external drive that I made using superduper. The activity monitor app worked from this disk image. I copied the AM app into my current drive, where it showed as a copy.
I rebooted, and attempted to use this copy. It wouldn't let me due to file permissions problems of some sort. I opened the current version of AM and now it works.
I'm not sure what fixed the problem, but Activity Monitory now seems to be working OK.
    thanks,
    Harold

  • Activity Monitor not working

The activity monitor app stops working frequently. This message appears in the console log :
    2/25/09 6:49:52 PM Activity Monitor[1391] * -[NSCFArray objectAtIndex:]: index (17) beyond bounds (17)
    Any suggestions ...? Thanks ...

thanks for the suggestion ... however it did not work. I am able to recreate the problem every time I scroll in the process screen when the Activity monitor is running and it is always the same message on the console log :
    2/25/09 9:50:03 PM Activity Monitor[174] * -[NSCFArray objectAtIndex:]: index (15) beyond bounds (15)
    Any other ideas ? Thanks

  • Help needed--activity monitor not working properly

Activity Monitor is currently not showing any processes, no matter what I do. Otherwise, it appears to be functioning normally. I just can't see any processes listed. Also, A.M. works normally in a different account on my MBP.

    Hi
In your user account Library/Preferences/ folder, there's a file com.apple.ActivityMonitor.plist Quit AM first, then drag this file to the trash. This is the preference settings file for AM & it's possibly gone a bit odd. A new one will be created when you next open AM - any setting/display changes you made in AM will be lost.
Try that - if it's ok now, just forget the file you trashed.

  • Activity Monitor not working in Yosimite

Error Message:  You can’t use this version of the application “Activity Monitor.app” with this version of OS X.
I am now running Yosimite. Activity Monitor picture not displayed on its icon either.
How do I get Activity Monitor to run and get the icon picture to display too.

    Heheh revjay, exactly :-D
@ Leinie: When you install any new software or updates, then it's always a good idea to repair permissions, so you will have a "clean" system afterwards.
Repairing permission also solves quite a lot of issuses with applications i.e. if they tend to hang, or crash. So this should always be one of the first things you do when something is not doing as it should on your mac.
    Glad that it works now

  • How does Activity Monitor Touch work?

Just wondering if anyone knows how this app works. The screen shot makes it look like it tells you much much time you spend playing games, on factime, reading, etc etc..... Does the iOS store this type of info in memory somewhere? Just curious how they would retrieve/calculate that type of info....
    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/activity-monitor-touch-free/id395986290?mt=8

I'm not sure where they get the 'data' they say they are monitoring, but that app is worthless because some of the 'data' is not even accessable to iOS apps.

  • Activity Monitor not working correctlyResorting the %cp

    Hi,
I've a new iMac, 27 inch, with Maverick installed. I'm having issues with Activity Monitor.
When I open up Activity Monitor, the process window is empty.
Resorting the %cpu tab, shows all of the processes, however it's static, ie the values don't get updated (I tried all frequency updates settings)
When going to the memory tab, all processes show up as 0 bytes
Disk tab also is empty, and stays empty even if i clickt the sort tab
Same for network tab, however after clicking sort it shows the processes, albeit with 0 bytes values and static.
Any advice to fix this would be greatly appreciated. I did already delete com.apple.ActivityMonitor.plist witch didn't change things.
    Cheers
    Tom

I have exactly the same issue and have no idea how to fix it and what reason to appear it. In my case the issue started roughly after I've updated my MacOS up to 10.9.1

  • Activity Monitor not working at all

My activity monitor never shows any processes, even though I have Safari open right now.

    Oh.
Have to say I have not heard of this this happening before. It is most unusual.
In Activity Monitor's menu, under View, Columns, are any selections made. Does selecting and deselecting any make any difference?
Does Activity Monitor operate normally in another account?
If not you may have to reinstall it from the DVD using Pacifist
And to avoid any problems in using it, read the documentation here:
Pacifist Documentation. Click on Usage to see examples.

  • Activity monitor question for experts.

When I open activity monitor it is constantly changing. I have safari open, but it is there and then it isn't and then it is in activity monitor. How do I read this and is that normal?

    mike sanders3 wrote:
I entered the thread because it clearly said Activity Monitor for experts and I had an AM problem please tell me where I went wrong I thought we were here to help each other not be picky about threads. If your thread was something different then maybe it should have been more specific I just needed help and there was an opening that seemed to refer to my problem. I don't spend half my life here as you seem to do judging by your posts, let's just be nice to people who need help.
In order to help people, they should understand the purpose of these boards.
Had you read the OP's post, you would see that his Activity Monitor is working and his question was simply why Safari appears and disappears from the AM window.
Your issue is entirely different and that is why I suggested starting a new thread with your particular problem/issue which has nothing to do with Safari in the Activity Monitor.
Perhaps the term "hijacking a thread" seems rash to you, but it is a common expression with no personal attachment to it. It merely means that someone has used another poster's thread to pose a completely different topic.
To best get help on this or any technical board, first search for instances of your particular issue, which may have already been solved, and if you do not find such a topic, start a new thread with the Subject describing your issue.
Once people start responding to other posts in a thread, nobody any longer knows who is answering whom.
It is always preferable to start a new topic if you want a quick solution to a problem, rather than bury it in another person's thread. It's called "Netiquette" and it is not my invention. It's been around as long as the net has been around AFAIK.

  • In Activity Monitor what is PrintJobMgr?

Don't know if this is the right place for this post, but in trouble shooting my G5 running 10.4.5 I notice the following process in Activity Monitor:
Process ID: 191, Process Name: PrintJobMgr, User: lp. When I click "Inspect" is tells me the Parent Process is cupsd (172) User lp(26)
I've never noticed this before, and although I'm not doing any printing and none of my printer applications are open it's % CPU amount keeps changing and is running between 50% and 97%!
If I click to quit pricess it says "PrintJobMgr is owned by lp. You need to authorize as an administrative user to kill the process."
Can anyone shed any light on this?
Dual G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Trouble shooting slow performance

    Vipir,
Thanks for the reply. I ended up quiting the process in Activity Monitor which worked. Now when I print I see PrintJobMgr re-appears with owner: Root and a CPU use of about 1%. Much more logical.
I did try "Reset Printing System" today when I was having trouble with DVD/CD feed on my Epson R200. The feeding system on this printer has always been iffy for me (sometimes it pushes out rather than pulls in the DVD). It did feed properly after I Reset. Unfortunately, I didn't realize it would delete all my saved Driver Settings. I hate to lose these as they need to be set very carefully to avoid errors. Any idea if I could restore these?

  • Activity Monitor no longer works, but icon is there

Recently, my Activity Monitor App in the Utilities folder stoped working. You try to load it up , but it won't start up.
Is there a way to relaod this app without having to reload the OS X Panther, and do all the updates again?

Open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run the following commands:
    sudo chmod 4775 "/Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app/Contents/Resources/pmTool"
    sudo chown root:admin "/Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app/Contents/Resources/pmTool"
Press Enter and type in your administrator password as necessary; when done, the Activity Monitor should open properly. Additionally, if you deleted some or all of the receipts from the /Library/Receipts/ folder, the ability of the Disk Utility to repair your permissions will be affected; you may need to reinstall Mac OS X to get the receipts back.

photoshop bridge on my 3 year old mac pro has become inoperable.  In activity monitor is is using 180+ percent of CPU.  I also get switchboard not operating.  I deleted all of photoshop and bridge and reloaded them.  Same problem.  Does anyone know a solution.  Setting up a new user account has been suggested.
    Thank you

    Hi @Tom,
Thanks for your response.  "Camera Uploads" is a folder in which Dropbox deposits all my photos and movie clips from my cameras.  It is a rather enormous folder likely exceeding several gigs of media.
    The file path is
    /Users/bpg/Dropbox/Camera Uploads/
I really don't know the difference between "media" and "events".  I consider media a group or bunch of photos and movie clips.  I consider "events" a specific bucket or container of photos and movie clips.  If I should know more, a reference to documentation or an explanation of the difference would receive "This helped me."  If you could explain how to get FCPX working again (it just won't do anything beyond the splash screen), I will provide "This solved my question."
    Thanks for your help!

  • Activity Monitor no more working!

Suddenly, I discovered today, starting Activity Monitor show me an alert panel with
"the application closed unexpectedly", and bye bye. Also as admin user. What the he**?
I have the last available version on my iMac PowerPC, no software update to download.
I reinstalled Activity Monitor from the Leopard DVD using Pacifist, and repaired the
disk permissions. Nothing changed. So what to do?

I asked you to try another user account because I suspected a preference file in your main wasn't working. When the same problem occurs in another account, this usually means the problem is somewhere in the system. In my experience, the easiest way to deal with a system-wide problem is to do an Archive and Install of the OS. It will save all the user data and settings, but puts a fresh copy of the OS on the machine--which should fix whatever hiccup is causing your Activity Monitor to give you problems.
There's the possibility that some terminal commands could help you, but I've no experience with it.
If you don't like my suggestions, don't follow them--an Archive and Install is often suggested when other troubleshooting doesn't help. My post count doesn't much matter to me, really. I'm just trying to help folks and learn while doing so.
