Activity Monitor: useful for diagnostics?

According to the Mac Activity Monitor, the computer's CPUs are doing all the heavy lifting while the graphics card sits around eating bon-bons during Motion's various operations. This don't seem right.
Is the Activity Monitor accurate/useful in trying to troubleshoot Motion's numbingly slow performance? Is this an indication that I haven't configured my system properly? I have tried many of the performance-enhancing suggestions I've found here and at Apple, but am still getting nothin' but beach ball.
Anyone? Thanks.

3-4 particle emitters? One emitter can send out hundreds or thousands of particles. One mistake I've seen is to set the life of the particle so it is kept alive (thus must be calculated) long after it has left the screen...
As to the override settings, I've never tried them, but I don't think there's any advantage to be had...

  • Activity monitor question for experts.

When I open activity monitor it is constantly changing. I have safari open, but it is there and then it isn't and then it is in activity monitor. How do I read this and is that normal?

I entered the thread because it clearly said Activity Monitor for experts and I had an AM problem please tell me where I went wrong I thought we were here to help each other not be picky about threads. If your thread was something different then maybe it should have been more specific I just needed help and there was an opening that seemed to refer to my problem. I don't spend half my life here as you seem to do judging by your posts, let's just be nice to people who need help.
In order to help people, they should understand the purpose of these boards.
Had you read the OP's post, you would see that his Activity Monitor is working and his question was simply why Safari appears and disappears from the AM window.
Your issue is entirely different and that is why I suggested starting a new thread with your particular problem/issue which has nothing to do with Safari in the Activity Monitor.
Perhaps the term "hijacking a thread" seems rash to you, but it is a common expression with no personal attachment to it. It merely means that someone has used another poster's thread to pose a completely different topic.
To best get help on this or any technical board, first search for instances of your particular issue, which may have already been solved, and if you do not find such a topic, start a new thread with the Subject describing your issue.
Once people start responding to other posts in a thread, nobody any longer knows who is answering whom.
It is always preferable to start a new topic if you want a quick solution to a problem, rather than bury it in another person's thread. It's called "Netiquette" and it is not my invention. It's been around as long as the net has been around AFAIK.

  • Activity Monitor Frozen for Days

It's me again. Begging for help. I know how to use the Activity Monitor, and it works well. But this is a problem I haven't seen.
Three days ago, I made the mistake of clicking on the "Sample" button for Classic FTP, which was not working at all.
Since that time, I have had a message that says:
    Sample of Classic FTP
Please wait while the sample is taken.
I have not been able to shut my computer down since. Not by using the Shut Down option, and not even by turning the machine off and back on.
I'm sure the answer is simple, but I can't figure it out.
    Help!

    Thank you!
The Activity Monitor was not available, as it was too busy trying to pull up that sample. But your instructions on how to turn if off via the Power Button (DUH!) was what I needed.
Mac is too intuitive for an old PC-user like me!
    Thanks.

  • Activity Monitor use

My activity monitor is showing the following two items, AddressBookSourceSync and CalendarAgent, using 75% to 85% of my resources. What are these and what are they doing? There is a third call Mingle that is also using a large amount of resources. Is all of this normal?

    Kappy,
I found what you see in the attached screen shot. As you will se I do not have what you suggested. Also, so I understand more fully what did you back up and where did you save it?

  • Maximum number of monitors used for remote desktop not working correctly

My goal is to connect from my home to my work machine but limit the number of monitors used to 2.
At work, I have a machine running Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 with dual monitors. My home machine is Windows 8.1 Pro and it has 3 monitors (on two video cards).
I followed the instructions of the MSDN blog post about using multiple monitors for remote desktop but cannot get it to work right.
Here's what I see when I modify the group policy setting "Limit maximum number of monitors" on the target (work) machine:
    Setting - Result:
    1 - 1
    2 - 1 (???)
    3 - 3
It looks like I can't limit the number of monitors used to 2, I get either one or all. Am I missing something or is this by design?
    Max

    Hi Max,
Support for multiple monitors is available when connecting from any Windows 7/8.1 computer, however, there are restrictions when connecting to a computer using multi-monitor mode. When connecting to Windows 7 computers, only computers that are running Windows
7 Enterprise or Ultimate can be connected to in multi-monitor mode. When connecting to Windows 8.1, only computers that are running Windows 8.1 Professional or Enterprise can be connected to in multi-monitor mode.

  • How To Use Activity Monitor

Is there a tutorial or something on using Activity Monitor?
For instance, I'd like to find out what processes are going on to prevent my G4 from shutting down at the scheduled time. (The shutdown deal has been ongoing since first going to OS X.)

    Hi, David.
    1. What specific version of Mac OS X are you using? Your profile information simply states "10.4". See:• If 10.4.5 or earlier, see "Mac OS X's Shut Down schedule will only work when one user is logged in."
    • If 10.4.6 or later, see Mac OS X 10.4.6 or later: Scheduled shut down occurs at Login window even if users are logged in."
    2. Note that your Mac must be awake at the appointed time for scheduled shutdown to work. See "Mac OS X 10.3 and later: Computer must be awake for scheduled shutdown to occur."
    3. You may want to trash the preferences related to scheduling Startup / Shutdown / Sleep:1. Quit (Command-Q) System Preferences if it is open.
    2. There are two preferences files for power management / energy saver settings under Mac OS X 10.4:• If you want to reset the Scheduled Startup and Sleep/Shutdown preferences, trash the file:
    com.apple.AutoWake.plist
located in the Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration folder. You may be prompted for your Admin password when you trash this file.
    • The Energy Saver preferences related to Computer, Display, and Hard Drive Sleep are saved in the file
    com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
which is also located in the Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration folder. As before, you may be prompted for your Admin password when you trash this file.3. Empty the Trash.
    4. Launch System Preferences and reset the preferences accordingly.Note that some of the information above is from the "Sleep" and "Shutdown" chapters of my book, Troubleshooting Mac® OS X, Tiger Edition.
    Good luck!

  • Activity Monitor won't run after leopard install

The only problem i'm having is that when i try and load Activity Monitor it bounces once and crashes. No amount of relaunches and reset/relaunches fixes the problem.
Any ideas? I've also tried launching the old tiger version of Activity Monitor that is on one of my SuperDuper backup external drives, but no luck.
    Thanks,
    Conrad

I apologize for the poor formatting. I did a filter for Activity and found these references to the crash. It looks like i'm missing a framework required for displaying the graphs that activity monitor uses. Any advice on how to go about replacing that?
    Thanks

  • Getting messages "startup disk is full" and activity monitor is showing "syslog d" is using a lot of CPU.  I'm planning on getting more memory for my late 2008 model Macbook but wondering if there's something that is causing problems that I can also fix.

I had closed out of all of my programs but heard the internal fans running so I checked the activity monitor.  It shows syslog d as the top process using the CPU right now.  I have no idea what that means.
I read a thread about the startup disk being full and how you can free up memory.  I have an airport extreme so TimeCapsule is backing up everything.  I do have a bunch of pictures on iPhoto on the laptop;  could move those to another location but I'm a little gunshy.  I know they are on the TimeCapsule but I would like to save them to a second place before deleting from laptop just to be sure.  I went through several things yesterday and emptied trash, etc.  I wasn't able to locate the hidden files that the thread about the startup disk being full was referencing --- they were talking about large emails that were causing processes to happen taking up the CPU.... I wasn't able to find out if that was the case for me.
Also I'm going to look into getting another 2MB of memory and installing it on the Macbook, so I can upgrade to the latest OS.  Anyone have an idea if that is worth the $$$ over buying a new laptop?  Or anyone have ideas as to where to buy memory, etc.
    Any ideas - help!

  • Difference between Available and Used in Info for MacIntosh HD and Space Free and Space Utilised under Activity Monitor, Disk Usage?

I have a MacBook Air 2010, upgraded to OSX Version 10.8.4.  When I click the Macintosh HD and then look under Info, it says I have 120.47GB capacity, Available 60.97GB, Used 59.5GB.  However when I look under Activity Monitor, Disk Usage it says Space Utilised 92.18GB, Space free: 28.29GB.  Questions:
    Why the difference?
Which is more important for computer speed?
How to I reduce "Space Utlised" to closer to "Used"?  (I've already moved 25GB of the more bulky, less immediate data to external storage from the computer, including emptying IPhoto Trash and the main Trash.  The Space Utilised dropped only from 95GB to 92GB--while the Used space dropped from 85GB to 60GB.)

    Iheartapple1970
Just to let you I tried the reindexing before the Mendes advice and it had no effect.  Of course, I may have done it wrong. It was the HD icon from the desktop which I dragged into the Privacy window of Spotlight (and then did the +, OK, - and close Spotlight).  Should I have dragged in something else?  Or opened up the HD and dragged in all the contents?
Also, there is a small section in my HD which is for my wife's account which has a separate user name and password, although it has no data in it and I set it up while under my administrator account original, so my MacAir may think I still "own" it; in any case, I did not get any sort of error message saying I did not have ownership of the entire HD.

  • Is it normal for 10-20% cpu to be used when idle and watching activity monitor?

Is it normal for 10-20% cpu to be used when idle and watching activity monitor?
I have a macbook 6,1, 4gb of ram, and my os seems to be spinning the rainbow quite often and laggy. I watch my activity monitor and it never drops below 90% cpu available. Is this normal? if not what can I do to clean up my os. Does anyone have any resources or help? Thanks

    Hello:
    Answer - no.
The activity monitor should indicate what is consuming the processor when your system is idle.
I just looked at my own system with Safari running and the usage is about 3%.

Quicktime won't open for me. It was fine about a year ago. Not coming up in activity monitor. What do I do to fix this?
Would appreciate any help as I am not particularly computer savvy.

Greyed imaged in the Import dialog box mean you have already imported the photos into Lightroom, so there is no need and no benefit to importing them a second time.
Just go to the Library module, search for the desired photos, and resume working on these photos.

  • Hide fields for activities when they are opened via Activity Monitor

    Hi,
In CRM 5.0, my requirement was to hide a number of fields from activity display via transaction CRMD_ORDER & CIC0 (SAPGUI based transactions). I achieved it by using screen variant. I assigned my screen variant to different transactions (CRMD_ORDER, CIC0 etc.), and things were working fine.
But when I open activity monitoring report (transaction S_AE2_89000019), search for some activities and open an activity by double-clicking in the report, the hidden fields become visible. Although, the transaction being displayed in CRMD_ORDER.
I couldn't enable my transaction variant for transaction S_AE2_89000019, obviously because this is a report transaction which in turn opens activity when we double-click on the grid.
Any idea how to avoid these hidden fields being displayed via S_AE2_89000019?
    Regards,
    Kaushal

    Hey Kaushal,
Let me first inform you the following:
    1) Transaction Variant are associatated to Dialog transactions only......Which means when u call report which eventually refers the same transaction even then the transaction variants is not called....
For the whole transaction variant to workout, you need CALL transaction "  ..."....
    2) The transaction S_AE2_89000019 is not a dialog transaction, its a parameter transaction which eventually calls a report AQZZ/SAPQUERY/SMCRM_REP_ACT1==
3)This report in turn uses the call to FM CRM_1O_CALL_FOREIGN which launches that crmd_order transaction screen  and not crmd_order transaction..
You can enchance that report by creating a z report and inside that z report you can fulfill your requirement..
    Inspire ppl by reqwarding..
    Regards,
    Anand...
