Actual Formatted Capacity Is?

Hey there.
So my school is getting a Mac lab, and in addition to 16 iMacs we're going to get 10 MacBooks. My question, more so request, is that people who have purchased MacBooks post their actual formatted capacity of the drives so I can get a better idea of how much usable space I am dealing with.
Thanks!
P.S. If you feel so inclined, you can post your two cents about how good the MacBook will perform for iLife and possibly Final Cut Express, or any other apps you think the school will use. We will be using them primarily for media. MacBook Pros are too expensive, and the iBooks severely lacked when they were the low cost laptop.
Probable configuration of the (10) MacBooks will be:
2.0GHz Intel Core Duo
1GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x512
80GB Serial ATA drive
SuperDrive (DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
AirPort Extreme Card & Bluetooth
Subtotal $1,460.00 (Canadian)
Any RAM upgrades in the future are going to be a b^tch because of the symmetrical access..

Hey nice school, is the principal related to any apple founder ? Just kidding...
I am an iLife user since iMovie 2.0 and iTunes 2.0 on MAc OS 9, use iLife '03 on my original eMac 700, '04 on my eMac 1.25, '05 and '06 also on my eMac and '06 in my MacBook also.
to my suprise my eMAc still can handle '06 well up to 1 hour project with plug ins like slick etc. (remember to get one for sweetening your movie class project). And when I run iLife on my MAcBook, it is more responsive (well... compare to my eMAc 1.25) and I manage to create athe same length project more efficently., that is including using the iDVD as well.
iPhoto superb, iTunes,.. well I enjoyed it no speed differ on it compare to my eMac. Garage Band work superb also. Invest Jam PAck if you having music class as well. and invest a pair of decent speaker monitor for each MacBook since the sound output from built in MacBook speaker is thin and nor loud enough.
The only one I never tried is iWeb, since I am not into it and I don't want to have .mac account.
The only concern for me is my 5400 rpm on the HD side, that I afraid will create a dropped frame or hiccup on garage band sound recording, so I always use an external HD (7200 rpm, 8 or 16 mb cache recommended) for my project.
I think it will be a good idea too for your lab, having an external HD for each MacBook or student, so after class, the mac lab supervisor just wipe it or collect all of the external, plug it into his or her iMac, and delete it two HD at a time instead of having walk around and tracing and deleting each MacBook HD project file that could be anywhere if the student save it improperly.
Also invest midi keyboard controler like mAudio or similar one that at least has 21 keys to give the music/recording class a big picture of midi environment and how it is working. Starting from $ 49 and up.
Haven't tried new Final Cut Express, since I stuck with 2.0.2 and I miss one step (Final Cut Express 3) of upgrade before I can upgrade to latest new FCE universal. Can't jump to new FCE it should upgraded from at least FCE 3
Hope this will help make your laboratory more interesting and your principal more confusing with the budget....

  • "Actual Formatted Capacity" of 3rdG Nanos

What is everyone getting for their actual capacity of their new 3rdG nanos?
My 8GB nano is showing 7.41 GB.
I'm wondering if this is about average, or should I swap out.
    Ogie

This is perfectly normal, some of the listed capacity is used for formatting and other functions including the iPod's operating software. You'll see the same thing if you connect any flash memory stick. For instance my 1GB memory stick is reported as 980.7 MB. With hard drives, there's a difference between how manufacturers calculate capacity and how the operating system calculates it. You'll see an example of that if you look at the size reported for your own computer hard drive. My 300 GB hard drive is reported as 279.36 for instance: How much content will fit on my iPod?

  • Ipod Nano actual HD capacity

    Hi everyone,
I just got a 16GB iPod Nano yesterday. When I first hooked it up it showed the capacity was somewhere very close to, or exactly 16GB...I can't remember the exact amount. Last night due to my messing some things up, I did a restore using iTunes. After this it shows that the hard drive capacity is 15.04 GB. Can someone explain why it would change? I wouldn't have been surprised if it started out showing this capacity when I first got it, but I don't like that it changed.
    Thanks,
    Infowarrior.45

When I first hooked it up it showed the capacity was somewhere very close to, or exactly 16GB
    Not really.
It was very close to ~15GB because this is all the memory there is, even with nothing on it such as the OS.
16GB = 17,179,869,184 bytes, not 16,000,000,000 bytes. Go backwards and 16 billion bytes cannot be 16GB.

"One more thing about iPod disk size
In iPod's About menu, the hard disk size is reported as slightly less than the technical specifications for the iPod. The same is true if you connect iPod to your computer in disk mode to look at the info or properties window for the disk.
Why the difference? Most hard disk manufacturers measure disk size this way: 1 MB = 1 million bytes (1000 * 1000). A 4 GB disk, therefore, is one that holds 4 billion bytes. Computers, including Windows computers, Macintosh computers and iPod, measure disk size this way: 1 MB = 1 048 576 bytes (1024 * 1024). The difference in these two calculations is what causes the drive to appear as 3.7 GB on a computer, but actually be a 4 billion byte disk."

  • Remaining hard drive space more than actual drive capacity!

I have a retina macbook pro, and installed mountain lion so not sure which forum to put this post in.
I guess posting on Mountain Lion might be better.
My drive says 548GB available on my finder window.
I actually only have 170GB left based on my About My Mac.
The funny thinh is that my flash drive is only 500GB!!!
So why is this happening? Anything I can do to fix it?

That's more than a bit odd.
You may get different figures from the Finder vs. Disk Utility and the Storage display, because of local snapshots, but none ought to show that.
Select the HD and click on Get Info. See if the results agree.

  • How many gigs is the 30 gb ipod actually formatted?

i know apple says 30, buts its really like a couple gigs less.. anyone know? i have a 60 gb and its really like 5 gigs less then that. thanks
    60gb black 5th gen ipod

All hard drives never have the full advertised storage space, and as a general rule it's around 7% less than stated.
It's because hard drive manufacturers calculate hard drive space different than computers actually read it.
For a full technical explanation, see these.

  • Query Engine to get Instance Data from Binary format to actual format

    Hi all,
In OBPM 10GR3 is there a way to get Engine Instance Data contained in the table PPROCINSTANCE in the BPM Engine DB using the Fuego API in the catalog?
I could not find any method?
    Is there any?
I want to get the column INSTANCEDATA which is a BLOB and then get values from that BLOB which obviously would turn into a Binary Object inside BPM .
So we can retrieve data from that Binary Object?
    Edited by: user8752903 on Jul 11, 2011 2:12 PM

    You can use PAPI
    InstanceInfo istinfo = processSession.processGetInstance("/TestProcess#Default-1.0/1234/0");
    DynamicObject dynObject = (DynamicObject) istinfo.getVariable("instanceVariable", Locale.ENGLISH);

  • Storage Capacity Problem - Macbook Air 11.6"

I got this MBAir last December, and sometime last month had a complete crash... why, because I was forced to terminate a certain application, everything frozen, and I force off (holding power button for 5 seconds)
    History:
    1. I installed a new partition for XP, not via bootcamp because I was having problem acquiring the drivers, size is 9G.
    2. 128G as I remember shows as my storage capacity (or if not, it could be only minus 1-2G)
    3. I realized, I don't need the XP at all, so I decided to have it deleted, but I could not delete it via Disk Utility so I left the app (Disk U) running at the background, and did something else.
    4. Frozen... force restart.
    5. Start up disk (both Mac and PC) could not be detected.
    6. I inserted the flash drive startup disk, and performed the Disk Utility VERIFY AND REPAIR, but not successful.
    7. Ran REFORMAT and REPARTITION.
Now I only have one partition, restored my Time Machine Backup, and everything was restored back, but I noticed huge amount of storage space missing. About 9 G.
Can someone help me with this please??
By the way, I now run Leopard 10.6.4, and still running the update (download) of the 1.06G file size... it takes days before completion with my current Satellite Internet connection.

Now, you can. Your SSD has a capacity of 128,000,000,000 bytes (this is the method device manufacturer's use. You will find this noted in the footnote on the MBA's specs: +1GB=1 billion bytes; actual formatted capacity may be less+.) If you divide the above by 1024^3 it will equal 119.21 GBs or 120,000,000,000 bytes, approximately. Hence what appears to be a loss of storage space. In actuality the two are the same. One computed using Base 10 and the other using Base 2 arithmetic.
You can approximate the difference on any drive by deducting about 7% from the manufacturer's stated capacity. For a 128 GB drive that is about 8.96 GBs - your missing 9 GBs.)

  • Formatted Hard Disk Memory

    Hi,
I am new to the Mac world, and I just got my iBook with a hard disk memory of 80G. However, when I checked out the formatted memory, 20G has already been used, leaving slightly more than 60G. Is this typical? My last notebook was only 20G (not a mac), and the formatted memory was around 17G. If any one can enlighten me, I would greatly appreciate it!
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
This amount of available space is not unusual. The "80GB" capacity is a marketing term, the Finder will report an actual formatted capacity of about 74GB. Mac OS X takes up more than 3GB and iDVD and Garage Band each take up more than 2GB of hard drive space. When you add the games and other software that comes with an iBook, 14GB of used space is just about normal. You might want to take a peek at this previous topic:

  • IPad Actual Storage Space.

I am making a decision now as to whether to buy a 3rd party media device which I need immediately or to wait for the iPad. I have 57 gigs of PDFs and music I need to take around. Will the 64GB iPad fit them after we discount the space needed for OS? Given that it will run the same iPhone/iPod Touch OS + Adding in the apps featured on the iPad microsite at apple.com (e.g. Safari, iWork port, etc), can anyone estimate just how much space will really be available?

Thx. As you know, data storage needs naturally increase with usage, so it is really important to approximate just how much breathing room one has before maxing the iPad out. You know how this industry is, I cannot wait for a 128GB iPad or then I'll keep waiting for the next thing forever.
On Apple's iPad microsite it of course confirms "actual formatted capacity less" but not how much of course. The site does however list that the following are the applications that will be included with the iPad:
    Safari
    Mail
    Photos
    video
    YouTube
    iPod
    iTunes
    App Store
    iBooks
    Maps
    Notes
    Calendar
    Contacts
Now a lot of these are the same as iPhone/iPod Touch (except maybe iBooks). I don't have an iPhone/iPod Touch, so I don't know how much these actually take up. I'm hoping someone with one of these devices can estimate how much these take up including the OS and reserved memory. Would it go over 200MB? 500MB? 1G?

    from Byron.

You can indeed burn moves and shows from the iTunes Store to a data DVD (via Finder or other software) for backup purposes, which is I believe what Byron is asking about (though I can't be sure). You just can't burn them to a video DVD to be played in a standard DVD player.
Well, I'm not sure about that. Having just re-read the terms, it appears that you may re-download content, and that you can burn songs, but this appears to not include videos (unless it is iTunes Plus content):
(iv) You shall be authorized to burn an audio playlist up to seven times.
    (v) You shall not be entitled to burn video iTunes Products or ringtone iTunes Products.
(vi) iTunes Plus Products do not contain security technology that limits your usage of such products, and Usage Rules (ii) – (v) do not apply to iTunes Plus Products. You may copy, store, and burn iTunes Plus Products as reasonably necessary for personal, noncommercial use.
Reading further, then there is this:
    (ix) Content Rentals
    (a) Content rentals are viewable on only one device at a time. You must be connected to the iTunes Service when moving rentals, and you may do so only between your computer and other compatible devices. Content rented using your Apple TV, iPad, iPhone 4, or iPod touch (4th generation) may not be moved. If you move a rental to a compatible device and then use the iTunes Service to restore that device, or choose Settings > Reset > Erase all content and settings on that device, the rental will be permanently deleted.
    (b) You have thirty (30) days after downloading a rental to begin viewing. Once you begin viewing, you have twenty-four (24) hours to finish viewing a movie, and forty-eight (48) hours to finish viewing a TV show. Stopping, pausing, or restarting a rental does not extend the available time for viewing.
Some iTunes Products, including but not limited to Content rentals, may be downloaded only once and cannot be replaced if lost for any reason. It is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage iTunes Products once downloaded, and you may wish to back them up.
Even after years of deciphering contracts and the sometimes rather complex content, I find this a bit confusing and I'd be checking with Apple to make sure I'm not doing anything I shouldn't be.

  • New macbook pro 160 GB 2.26 ghz memory issue???

Just got a new macbook pro, i'm a converted P.C. user , so far I love the thing, but i noticed when I went into Mac HD at the bottom it said 86.4 gb remaining or something to that nature? The only additional things I have put on the hard drive is my music (roughly 12 gigs), so where did the other 60+ gigs of memory go? Are all the applications like ichat, ical, iphoto, garageband, taking up that much space? If anyone can give me any idea's on how to free up some of that space or get it back, it'd be much appreciated!
I do feel that it will take ions to fill up the remaining 85 gigs, but on the other hand if I had bought the 120 gig hard drive i'd be in a different boat and it seems strange for apps to be taking up that much memory!

What donv is alluding to is the fact that the actual, formatted capacity of a nominal 160GB drive will always be around 147GB.
Your OS occupies approximately 9GB, and can be slimmed down by a couple. Your apps and the support files and sample files that accompany them probably occupy 10-20GB more, depending on what you've installed besides the factory-preinstalled apps.
Beyond this, DiskInventoryX will fill you in on where the rest of your space is going.

  • 2 Gb iPod Nano?

What is the exact size of the memory of the 2 Gb iPod Nano? I found out only after purchase. I'm looking through the menus on my new toy and I find out it's 1.8 Gb.
What happened to the other 200 Megabytes?
    Not happy.
    Jon

The very first guideline on submissions in the Terms of Use for this site is:
Search or browse for existing answers before you ask a question. Someone else may have asked your question — it may save you some time.
Your particular question has been asked and answered many times here; if you had looked for the answer first, you might have saved time and found an answer without even posting. It is also courteous to other users of this site, since it can get tedious answering the same question over and over again.
All hard drives, RAM modules, flash drives and any other storage medium is advertised using values in base 10 (the number systems that humans use), but computers report their capacities in base 2 (the numbering system that computers use). Thus, a drive with 2,000,000,000 bytes in it would be reported as 2GB in base 10, but 1.86GB in base 2. However, these two numbers are the exact same number, just different bases.
    Or,
    2,000,000,000 bytes = 2GB (base 10) = 1.86GB (base 2) <== these are all the same number.
This is so because in base 10, the difference from kilo to mega to giga is 1,000 times, but in base 2, the difference from kilo to mega to giga is 1024 times, which introduces a difference between the advertised and reported capacities that gets apparently more significant as the total actual capacity increases. However, the difference is only in how the capacity is reported, not in what the capacity actually is.
You got exactly what you paid for, which is 2,000,000,000 bytes. You should not get 10% off, since you actually got all 100% of your 2,000,000,000 bytes.
This is true of every manufacturer and seller of every computer storage medium, not just Apple. Additionally, on all Apple products that contain some storage device, they always include a note that says something like: "Actual formatted capacity varies."
As far as your car analogy goes, most cars actually get considerably less MPG than they advertise, especially hybrid cars (which often get less than half their advertised MPG) because they are allowed to advertise MPG under optimal conditions. So in all likelihood, a car which advertises 30MPG will probably get somewhat worse than that in actual practice.
