Ad-Hoc between MBP's still a G network!

I'd really like an explanation as to why my 2 N
updated MacBook Pro's are still ad-hoc
(computer-to-computer) networking at G speeds.
This doesn't make any sense to me at all. Yes, both
display n capabilities in Network Utility.
How are you determining that they are only networking at g speeds? From the Link Speed in Network Utility, or via some actual testing/comparison of file transfers.
I'm curious, because I just had the Airport upgrade to my Mac Pro, and just added a Linksys Wireless N router to my network, turned off all other devices, forced "n only" connections on the router, and Network Utility is reporting 54Mb on my Link Speed as well.
I'm going to force g and n connects and see if I get any different transfer speeds via the two.

Screen Sharing does not require the internet at all. I screen share via finder ss via wifi G all of the time between leopard MBA and MBP on a G based network or a N based ad hoc network.
Simply use wifi and create an ad hoc wifi network between the two MBPs from the airport menu in the menu bar as in Create Network. For your purposes, use the simplest open network or a five letter password.
For the screen sharing, go to the screen sharing article at <http://www.macworld.com/article/131094/2007/12/screensharepower.html?t=201> or at the Tidbits site (same article, same author) and set up the screen sharing in the finder.. not ichat. Finder screen sharing is simple and does require a wifi connection between the computers but does not require an internet connection at all.

MBP 15" Slow Start Up (Network Settings)

We had an IT guy come into our office and attempt to connect two MBPs to our Windows AD network. No luck. However, since then, my MBP start up time has been excrutiatingly lengthy (only when NOT connected to the office's ethernet cable). I'm talking > 5 minute to start up. By contrast, when plugged into the network, start up time is < 30 seconds (although I still do not have network access). Please HELP! How do I reset all users/network settings to their default?

Hey there. By startup time, do you mean actual BOOT time of the machine, or do you mean user login time?
I would suggest you try starting your machine in either single user mode or safe mode, just to see where it is getting hung up. Starting in single user mode, you will see a verbose dump of the unix boot process, and can determine if it is waiting for some particular resource.
If the problem is happening at LOGIN time for the user, hold down the shift key while logging in to disable any auto-connections to servers or auto-runs of applications. You can then reset the user network connections the usual way, from the Network control panel. You may also want to verify what order it is searching for network connections. Go to the list of possible network devices in the Network Preference pane, drag them into your order of most frequently used to less frequently used.

PC Still Can Access Network without Joining AD in ISE Environment

Hi Folks,
I'm new to ISE and I have a problem about access control with ISE and here's my situation:
The wired 802.1X is deployed with windows AD using ISE. For now, Clients joined the domain can access the network well, however, for computers which havn't joined the domain can also access the network if the users know their account of the domain. They can start the 802.1X service by themselves and configure the network card properly, connect the network cable, when the windows dialog pops up, the user can enter the username starts with the domain like "mydomain\username"(mydomain is the domain name) and the passowrd, then the computer can gain the access just like it had joined the domain. So I think there may be some mistakes with my Authentication and Authorization Policy.

I'm wondering if I can add one condition to math the hostnames of the windows as computers which had joined have the unified format?

It didn't really work for me.
I managed to set up the AEBS better now, but still no true networking.
I can access the USB HDD from the iMac that is connected via the WAN port on the AEBS. But it's not mounted.
I started up my old iMac, and connected to my network. Interestingly, if I search through the folders in the network link of my old iMac, I find the USB HDD and can actually access it!
The old iMac also sees my netbook (identified by brand and MAC address, which I recognise and is correct for the netbook).
When trying to access that netbook, it asks for a workgroup, a user name and a password. No idea why and what those may be. I assume I have to set those up on my netbook?
Then when trying to do software updates on the old iMac, it does not seem to be able to connect, whilst I have safari open and running fine on the same machine at the same time, what's up with that???
In the mean time my new iMac does NOT see the netbook or the old iMac. I wonder why that is?

Still can't network

So, I managed to get the Airport HDD to be seen on my Mac. As my Mac is hardwired in teh router, this may be why my mac sees it. My windows PC does not see it, although it does use the internet signal wirelessly
I don't understand this, isn't the HDD automatically shared with everything that connects to the router?
Only guest users currently cannot access it according to thr router settings, but I even tried setting that to read&write without effect.
Can someone please tell me how I can actually create a network step by step?
The manual is useless, it doesn't say anything other than "thank you for your money!"

What's the difference between "Extend" or "Join" a wireless network?

I have a Time Capsule as my main base station and an Airport Express I'd like to use on another floor of my home for an internet connection for my Blu-ray player and to stream music via Airtunes. If I connect the Express to the Blu-ray using Ethernet and to my speakers with an audio cable, should I set up the Express to Extend or Join my network? What's the difference between "Extend" or "Join" a wireless network?

When you configure the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to "join an existing wireless network" it will perform like any other wireless client (laptop, printer, etc.) that connects to that wireless network. It will NOT perform as a router nor extend the wireless range of (in this case) the Time Capsule (TC).
However, if you configure the AX to "extend a wireless network" it will perform as an additional wireless access point to your TC's wireless network, effectively extending the TC's wireless range. In addition, the AX's Ethernet port will also be enabled and you can connect a single Ethernet client or multiple ones if you connect an Ethernet switch instead.

I have ARD installed on Client 1 and Client 3 (different locations where I'm at) and I need to manage Client 5 and 6 (and the others, but that amounts to the same problem). Since there are multiple computers behind the NAT, I cannot just patch a port through. I want a secure solution as the traffic goes via the internet.
I have been thinking about letting the users of Client 5 and 6 set up a VPN link to the NAT Router of Client 1 when they need assistance, but when I want to manage this from Client 3, all traffic goes over two VPNs, let alone if the router at Client 1 can manage this in a stable way.
Probably, two assignments in the router of client 5 & 6 would be nice, but can I tell ARD to use different ports for certain machines?

So you're connecting your computer to the wireless, then putting a cable from the computer to an other device, if I'm understanding correctly.
Did you see if both devices generate IP address's?
I'm sure if you call Canon, they will be able to help you.

MBP 2012 still slow after clean install of Yosemite

I'm hoping someone can help me, I've done just about everything I can find online to get my MBP to work like it used to. After unsuccessful attempts at different workarounds, I decided to wipe everything perform a clean install of Yosemite.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:

The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

File Transfer and Screen Sharing between MBP and MBA

I am running 10.5.6 on both. MBP is connected via ethernet to router and MBA via Airport. I can access files and Share screen of MBA while working on MBP. However I cannot log onto MBP while working on MBA. I have tried every combo in System Preferences-Sharing. What am I doing wrong? I can even exchange files with an older iBook. What gives?

Well, you're behind a router, but it is still not a great idea to "Allow all incoming connections." At any rate, it shouldn't be necessary.
Have you looked at the computer names for the two machines, etc., to make sure that you aren't confusing your network devices with conflicting identifiers? Put another way, your two computers are not named the same, are they?
Another thought: Some routers firewall between the wired and wireless networks. You may have to open a port on the router, or enable its "UPnP" capability, if it has one. Have you tried connecting the Macbook Pro wirelessly, and did it make any difference?

Help in Deciding between MBP models!!

I am about to purchase a new MBP and need help deciding what I "really" need.
Here is what I have and what I am looking to do...
Currently a Vista user, and it has driven me to buy a new laptop when I really don't need one. I don't do much power computing, but do want to start messing with iLife's video and web features. The only thing I do currently is surf the web and play World of Warcraft... everything else in Vista is a pain.
I am debating between the two 15.4" offerings, mainly based on the GeForce 8600 with 128MB or 256MB of video memory. I know that video memory is important, but also know that I am playing this right now on a PC with NO dedicated video memory, and it's fine... Will I notice a difference between the two MBP's or should I just go for the lower, and then add more memory with the savings?

Since the only game you play is WOW, the 128MB 8600M will be fine. You will no doubt notice better frame rates with a dedicated video card, especially if you are running an external monitor (as you stated). Since you aren't doing any heavy work, there is no point in getting the higher end machine. Even the Macbook would be fine, other than maybe the integrated graphics, although that wouldn't hurt WOW since its not exactly cutting edge graphics anymore. Your best bet is to spend the extra money that you could spend to get a mere 200Mhz and a more VRAM on physical RAM (better to upgrade your RAM from a third party source, its cheaper).
