AD HOC Internet Sharing Issues

I was delighted when i found out that my MBP could put out a wireless signal for the touch to use as im not in the location for one in my university halls. However although i can access some websites, the majority being search engines, google, yahoo, wikipedia, etc. i cannot go further than that, for example i can go to google, search IPod, look at the results, but not access any of them. The youtube application never loads videos even though sometimes it will find search results. Also i cant get on to the apple website, one of the default bookmarks. Is this due to the integrity of an ad hoc network? Or is there something odd?
I ask this mainly on the basis that it loads the search engines up in a matter of seconds, but then completely times out on the next step of accessing results.
Help for a noob would be much appreciated.
Tim

To elaborate a bit, a more Mac kinda guy than I am confirmed that internet sharing makes the mini act as a gateway, but not a router, which is obviously what I need.  Is there a convenient way to get it to act as a router, or do I need to spend some quality time with ipfw?

I have an ad-hoc wireless network set up with internet sharing on a Mac mini running OSX 10.6.  I have several machines connected to it, all of which can ping the mini and can access the internet in general.  I can also ping each of these machines from the mini.  However, none of these machines seem to be able to see each other - I can't ping them across the mini's ad-hoc network, and when I ping the broadcast IP (10.0.2.255 in this case), I only get a response from the mini.  What secret configuration options do I need to alter to get the machines on the network to see each other?  I'm a Linux guy, btw, so if the answer involves messing with things at the command line, I'm cool with that.

  • Nokia 520- Internet Sharing Issue After WinPhone 8...

I recently updated my Lumia 520 (AT&T) to WinPhone 8.1 OS.  Since the update was installed, I am unable to turn on my internet sharing (mobile hotspot).  I receive the following message on the screen, "Connect not shared.  To enable tethering on this device, go to att.com/mywireless or dial 611."  I have spoken with AT&T technical support on several occasions and they do not see an issue with my plan.  I also have a second device (another Lumia 520) on my plan that was currently running WinPhone 8.0 and successfully sharing internet as a mobile hotspot.  Today, I manually updated the OS on that device to WinPhone 8.1 and as expected, the internet sharing functionality stopped working after the update.
I have looked through various message boards and posts related to similar issues, however I cannot find one that is directly attributed to the WinPhone 8.1 update.
Any ideas or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks Abi99
After I pulled the battery to get the product code, the error message when I try to start ICS changed to:  Connection not Shared.  Internet sharing isn't currently available
I am still on AT&T.  However, I ported the number (not the device) out to T-mob and then back to AT&T 3 weeks later.  I used the 520 on WiFi in the interim 3 weeks, and during this time, it received the 8.1 update notification, and I installed 8.1.

  • Ad Hoc Internet Sharing

I have a windows PC at home and a Powerbook. I want the PC to be directly connected for serving purposes, but would like to be able to have both comptuers on the internet, without using a router. I got a wireless USB key for the PC, and now have it set up Ad Hoc with Internet Connection Sharing active,
The powerbook can see the network in the airport menu, but neither the file sharing, or internet sharing options are working.

  • IMac and internet sharing issue

Under System Preferences_Internet & Sharing_Sharing, I have the internet sharing box checked, along with screen sharing. Whenever I turn on my computer, the internet sharing is disabled, although the box is still checked. Once I re-check the box, it starts up again. What gives?

Everyone I found the answer after I posted my own comment re localhost...got me thinking.
I checked /etc/hosts file and in there was a loopback to localhost

WOW...how the heck did that get entered as I never edited this file??
    Now all works fine.

  • Sudden Internet Sharing Issue From Laptop to Tower

I have a laptop ibook G4 running 10.5.7 that is connected successfully to wifi.
Until yesterday, I was sharing successfully with my G5 tower running 10.4.11.
I restarted my laptop last night and it wouldn't connect. I checked my settings under 'network/airport' and light was green and I got an IP address. I also saw 'network/ethernet' showed green and had a different IP address (not sure it is supposed to do that, but I'd assumed it was the IP address for my tower)
Anyway, I unplugged the ethernet going to the tower and my laptop started working.
Now, as soon as I plug the ethernet cable up, the laptop acts like its not connected.
I turned 'network/ethernet' to off and that makes my laptop work again...
    Does this sound normal?
My tower's prefs arent identical since its 10.4.
I'd had both set to sharing/internet/ethernet and it's worked for weeks. I'm not sure what the current problem is a result of. Should my laptop 'network' settings be set for airport only? Or do I need to monkey with the 'ethernet' too? Should both computers be set for 'sharing' with built-in ethernet, or just the laptop?

First update your Mac OS. This issue may have been solve in one of the recent updates.
Second, be sure that the router firmware is up-to-date. This sleeping issue was common when Leopard first came out. Many of us had it and it was resolved by updating router firmware, or replacing old routers. I include myself in that group. The problem disappeared after updating both my routers.
I would also ignore WEP encryption. It takes a few minutes for anyone in range to hack it.
If your router does not support WPA2, then it's too old and you should replace it, killing two birds with one stone, so to speak.
Any router sans WPA2 is simply too old for today's OSs, and Leopard is very demanding when it comes to router security.

  • Bluetooth Network and Internet sharing issue

I'm trying to set up a network through Bluetooth between two computers having the latest Toshiba Stack installed, and to share the Internet connection with the second computer.
On the firs computer I've set the Internet Connection Sharing, and because of this it automatically sets the TCP/IP adresses for the Bluetooth Personal Area network (192.168.0.1).
On the 2nd computer, i've set everything to obtain it automatically. Firewalls (Kaspersky) disabled.
When I connect the 2 Bluetooth devices, everything looks fine, the 2nd automatically obtains the IP adress, I can ping both computers, and the Internet also works on the 2nd computer, for a few seconds! After that, it appears like the 2nd computer is disconnected from the network... what could be the problem?
In the event viewer under the System tab, I've found Informations like these:
    2nd comp:
The system detected that network adapter \DEVICE\TCPIP_{E44D18EB-91F5-4... was connected to the network, and has initiated normal operation over the network adapter.
The browser has forced an election on network \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{E44D18EB-... because a master browser was stopped.
and at 1st comp also appeares this:
The system detected that network adapter Bluetooth...Area Network - Packet Scheduler Miniport was disconnected from the network, and the adapter's network configuration has been released. If the network adapter was not disconnected, this may indicate that it has malfunctioned. Please contact your vendor for updated drivers.

However as soon as I unplug the USB cable my iphone disappears from itunes and "Sync Now" on iphone becomes greyed.
I can connect to Internet from iphone using the ad hoc network so I know they two devices are communicating wirelessly.
I just don't understand why I can't see the iphone in itunes.
I am running itunes 10.6.1.7 and IOS 5.1

  • Internet sharing has stopped working after 10.8.2 upgrade

Hi.  So, for the past year, I've been receiving WiFi internet on my iMac, and sharing it via ethernet and sometimes FW800.  Lately, mostly just ethernet.  As of 10.8.2, this has stopped functioning.  I have heard many rumors about internet sharing issues in the update, but it seems I am in the extreme minority in terms of sharing internet via ethernet rather than sharing it via WiFi.
For the record, what I have tried so far is, enabling and disabling all options, trashing preferences, creating a second administrator account on the iMac and trying from that one, switching multiple ethernet cables just in case, and even switching to a different wireless network (we have two in my home on different wavelengths).  It's always the same: devices recognize that they're connected to the ethernet port on the iMac.  The iMac recognizes it's connected to them.  They can obtain their own IP addresses through DHCP, but they cannot, under any circumstances, actually connect to the internet.
Please help!  I'm tearing my hair out over here, as this was crucial to my setup.  Updates shouldn't work this way.

As with other situations where a window is not visible, it is likely just off-screen where you can't see it. If your main "Final Cut Pro" window becomes inactive (close, minimize, and zoom buttons turn grey) when you attempt to open the "Background Tasks" window, this indicates that the window is definitely opened, it's just offscreen somewhere.
You can solve this problem by forcing FCPX to gather up all of its windows without having to delete your preferences:
    1. Attempt to open the Background Tasks window in FCPX,
    2. Switch to System Preferences->Displays and change your display resolution,
    3. Switch back to FCPX and verify that you now have your missing window back,
    4. Switch back to System Preferences and change your resolution back to its previous setting (likely the "Best for display" radio button).

  • 10.7.1 update doesn't fix my internet sharing problem

I've updated my Macbook (late 2008) to 10.7.1 today. I'm disappointed to find that the internet sharing issue still exists. I can ping websites through it, but wget never work. Google.com is accessible while other sites don't load on my iPod touch and Palm Pre Plus. But it did work fine within seconds after internet sharing was started. And internet sharing on my iMac with 10.6.8 works perfectly.
I'm using PPPoE to connect to the internet. I guess there are some problems with MTU (maximum transmission unit).
Don't tell me to change wifi channel or set password, it doesn't help.

    m4sheikh wrote:
Internet sharing worked on 10.7 after doing 1 tweak, that is by changing my Computer Name in internet sharing to something else other than the default one... however after upgrading to 10.7.1, the upgrade would mess up with the same tweaks again. It brought my Computer Name to its default, however when I clicked on edit it would give the changed name... I noticed that it has something to do with the IP Address but in any case I did the following and it works again for me on 10.7.1:
    1) Go to System Preferences>Sharing and click on Internet Sharing (don't 'tick' it yet!)
    2) After upgrading to 10.7.1, the Computer Name displayed on the Internet Sharing Screen would revert to the original, i.e. YourName's MacBook Pro. However, upon click edit next to the space where you can enter your Computer Name, it would give the name I had given while I was on 10.7.
    3) Now you just have to make sure that both names are identical (do not use the default name YourName's MacBook Pro). Please see snapshot below (yes, my Computer Name is 'Network-Error', so don't be surprised:))!
    4) Once you have confirmed that both names are identical, you are set to go and you may 'tick' the Internet Sharing option
    5) An arrow facing upwards will appear instead of the wireless icon on the top tray and your device such as an iPhone should connect without any issues (an IP address will be given).
Note: the other options that I have kept in the Wi-Fi Options tab are as follows:
    1) Network Name: should be identical to the one you have entered above
    2) Channel: 11
    3) Security: 40-bit WEP
    4) Password: I've entered a five-digit password that contains numbers
To confirm that its working for me, I've added a screenshot from my iPhone below:
It doesn't work for me. Thanks anyway.

  • Airport Internet Sharing and Double Nat Issue on the road

The Airport express is a very handy little piece of hardware that is particularly easy to pack in a luggage and carry along for those of us that are spending lots of time out of the office and home.
So here is the scenario when I travel and check in into an overseas hotel: I got two iphones, one local network, one my home network, and a Mac Book Pro, and soon, [when it finally ships], an iPad.
That makes it at least 3 MAC addresses in one room, and if i have any visiting colleagues to pack up a presentation, I will have more.
Usually hotels in Asia are well equipped with ethernet points in every room. The problem comes when I want to allow all my gears to connect to the internet.
I can use the Mac Book to share its ethernet connection while tethered to the plug, which not only turns it into an unlikely desktop, but also do not champion stability when it goes in stand by or sleeps and at times it even mixes up which is the access point to the net. Therefore this does not seem to be the best solution.
I can put the AE in bridge mode and plug it straight to the ethernet. But most hotels internet access are designed to charge per MAC address, so every time the router assigns via DHCP an IP to one of my gears it requires to accept new charges for that gear, even if they are all in the same room. This definitely does not seem right either.
Now if I configure the AE to share a public IP address and force it to ignore the double NAT warning, the AE light turns green but the internet sharing does not seem to work at all.
    My two questions are:
    1) Why can't the AE be configured like the Mac Book to have a simple "Internet Sharing" protocol that will be always live and not going to sleep or stand by like the laptop [As the AE is design to be always online as a wireless connection].
    2) is there any way to make that "Share a public IP - *** double NAT" work?
    Any feedback is welcome.
    Thanks. M

    Hi Bob,
thanks for your reply. Yes the only way to work it out on a typical hotel set up is to adopt the bridge mode and sometime the do waive your extra logs in. But I am not always so lucky and I often need to come up with less optimal solution.
This is a bit disappointing when you a have a AE in your luggage and you can't use it properly.
Yet my Mac can work the problem out effortlessly by just "Sharing a internet connection" with the only major limitation of being physically connected to the Ethernet cable.
Why can't the Airport Express do the same thing? Basically the AE could share the internet connection like the Mac Book, i guess introducing a secondary layer of NAT after the Hotel modem/router NAT setup [which is what the MAC Book is doing].
If AE can't do that at all then I guess soon we will just end up shelving it.
I wonder if this is an actual hardware limitation, MAC Book can wire TCP/IP flow to different sources on a double nat and AE can't, or this is just a software limitation and Apple could fix it with a firmware upgrade.
    Any thoughts on this?

  • IPad 2 wifi issues with iMac internet sharing

I have the iPad 2 [ (Wifi + 3G) ( iOS 5.1.1 (9B206) ] which connected to my 21" iMac [Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53)] through Internet sharing seemlessly some time back.
However of late, with latest software updates on the iMac & iPad, the connection seems to work only intermittently.
The connection breaks every half or one hour, despite both the devices being in the same room.
I have tried almost all suggestions on forums like resetting your network settings on iPad, changing channels on the iMac for Internet sharing, with or without password security, resetting the firewalls on & off on the iMac, but nothing seems to work & the only way is to reset all your settings all over again.

I used Internet Sharing like this couple of times!
The situation happens is that when you share your internet over Wifi, and you password protect it, when you connect the iPad or any iDevice to that new hotspot, it happens that after selecting that hotspot, we need to turn on "Auto Join". So when the iPad gets disconnected, it gets disconnected completely and you need to connect back once again. So when you turn on "Auto Join" it will get connected automatically once again it gets disconnected maybe due to power saving or suddenly it leaves the hotspot.

  • Making internet sharing work (Issue with Network Address Translation)

Trying to use internet sharing to enable a BluRay player to get access to the internet for firmware updates, BDLive, etc.
MacBook Pro is setup with Airport (en1) enabled and connected to the internet.
Ethernet port (en2) is set to "Configure IPv4: Off."
I have configured the /etc/bootpd.plist file with the following configuration as mentioned in http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071223001432304&query=xbox%2B360.
    <key>replythresholdseconds</key>
    <integer>0</integer>
After starting up Internet Sharing, the following is observed:
Ethernet port(en2) is reporting 192.168.2.1 as its IP address in Network Utility but not in the Network System Preferences Pane.
The Mac is responding to the DHCP request from the BluRay player and the BluRay is assigned an IP address of 192.168.2.2/24 with a default gateway and DNS of 192.168.2.1.
So you think there would be success with this but wrong. The system log is reporting that NATD "failed to write packet back (No route to host)" or "failed to write packet back (Host is down) and the connection test on the BluRay player is consistently failing.
Even manually configuring the ethernet port on the Mac is resulting in failure. Is there something else I'm overlooking?
Hoping someone can spread some light on this. Thanks.

So you were able to get it to work then?
I ask because I want to get the Sony BDP-N460 Bluray player for my parents, as it's the only Sony player aside from the Playstation 3 that is Netflix capable. I'm not sure why their other wi-fi enabled player doesn't have Netflix on it. I suppose I could get them a Playstation 3, but they don't really need one.
More than likely that Sony is positioning its products that way so people do go for the PS3 and increase it install base and possibly get you to by a game or two.
I want to connect the player to an old iBook G3 that's running 10.4 and share its connection. I did this successfully with the iBook and my Xbox 360 and wanted to know if it was possible to do so with a Bluray player.
I would bet that you will be able to accomplish this if you were able to get a 360 running through it. Just ignore the Blu-Ray player's test connection tool and try to connect to Netflix. Just play it safe and buy it through a retailer like Amazon where returns are hassle free.
