Ad Hoc network keeps disappearing

I've created an Ad Hoc network for my Eye-Fi card to upload pictures directly to my computer. However, when I login to my other network, etc and try to re-log on to my Ad Hoc it's gone. Are Ad Hocs not saved in OS X?

No, ad hoc network connections are not preserved for security purposes.

  • 5Ghz network keeps disappearing

I have Dual band 2GB time capsule. I have 3 networks configured - a 2.4Ghz network + guest network and a 5Ghz network. The 5Ghz network will work for a few days and then completely disappear.
Sometimes rebooting the time capsule results in the 5Ghz network re-appearing. However, most of the time this does not work. The only way I can get this back is to change the firmware version. I usually have to switch between 7.4.1 and 7.4.2 a couple of times a week.
Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a fault with this unit - should I return it?

Hi David. The most likely cause of this is that another 5Ghz network in you r neighborhood is interfering with yours.
Try changing the channel your 5GHz is on to 3-4 frequencies away from where it is now in Airport Utility. Then see if things improve. If you don't see enough channels when you click the drop-down menu, try holding down the Option key we you click the Channel menu and more channels should show up. Cheers!

  • Network Keeps Disappearing

    Hi-
Fired up my mini yesterday and it couldn't find my network.Other networks appeared in the Airport drop down from the toolbar but not mine. Somehow managed to get it working again but this morning it was gone again. It shows up in my list of networks but never gets added to the drop down. Tried creating another but that won't show up either. Never had a problem up till this point.
    Any thoughts?

I would suggest you to readjust the wireless settings on the router...
Login into the Linksys GUI by typing 192.168.1.1 in the address bar...Click on wireless tab and change the Channel Width to 20MHz only and Channel to 11>>>Click on save settings.Under Wireless tab click on subtab Advance Wireless Settings tab and Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...

  • Mac Mini keeps disappearing from network

I have a 2009 Mac Mini running 10.9.1 that is serving as a media center computer. Plex Media Server is on this machine along with my collection of movies and TV shows. I frequently access this machine using Plex clients, both on Mac and Roku, and also via file sharing and screen sharing on other macs. I almost always manage this machine through screen sharing, which makes this problem extremely frustrating.
Basically this mac keeps disappearing from my network. I can see it under "Shared" in finder on another computer, but when I click on it it hangs on "connecting" for a while and then just disappears. Same thing when trying to access via the Plex client on Roku. Sometimes I try to play something and it tells me to make sure my server is connected and running, and sometimes it doesn't even see my Plex media server at all.
I have screen sharing and file sharing enabled, and the firewall is set up to allow incoming connections for screen sharing, file sharing, and also Plex and all its helper programs. I don't think any of these should be the issue because I can access the mini with no problems SOME of the time just not all the time. Seems like if I haven't connected for some unknown amount of time this problem crops up. When it doesn't work I have to trot down to the basement, turn on the monitor (100" projection screen, so kind of annoying) and restart the computer. I have tried toggling "Put hard disks to sleep when possible," and that didn't seem to have any effect. I also have the energy saver set to wake for network access.
I do not recall having this problem as often, if ever, before I upgraded to Mavericks. Not sure if that could be part of the issue. One other quirk since upgrading to Mavericks is that upon every restart I am asked if I want to allow incoming connections for Plex and Connect 360, both of which are listed in the firewall preferences ad allowed programs.
    Can anybody help?

See if it's related to this...
It also seems to be related to later OSX versions, like 10.8.x & 10.9.x

  • ITunes library keeps disappearing with network home directories&MacBookPro

I've been using iTunes with network home directories for years. My wife & I have network home directories on our Macs and we can log into any of our Macs with our network home directories. The actual iTunes Music folder is also on the network server and shared between our user accounts.
This has always worked fine with my G4 cube, my PowerMac G5 and my PowerBook. As long as I only open iTunes on one machine at a time, I can open it on any of my machines and everything works great.
However, with my new MacBook Pro, my library keeps disappearing and I have to reimport it from the XML file every couple of days. Seems to erase my iPod Shuffle too at the same time (maybe it's triggered by plugging in my iPod).
Any ideas? Is there an endian issue with the library?
I can't figure out how to get any feedback on what's happening. Is there a debug log file I can enable?
PowerMac G5, PowerBook, MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I've got one better...I imported all my CDs onto iTunes. Then I upgraded. Here is what happened...All songs remained listed, however when I would click onto a song, a ! mark appears in front of the check mark and a window pops up saying "song could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" Well this occurred on 75% of my songs. Apple info led me to believe I could use my iPod as a hard drive. So I tried hooking up the pod to my computer. Well, from 3688 songs, I was down to just over 200, so I guess that is an even higher percentage.
What iTunes did was made a folder in "my music" with years 1955 to 2007. In those different years folders are the CDs that were released in that year. They have to be opened, each individual song, and re entered to itunes. All this I discovered on my own. No help from Apple. Not to mention what a royal pain in the *** process, which I am still in the process of doing. And don't even get me started with Artwork

  • Creating ad-hoc network for iTouch in XP

Has anyone been able to sucessfully create an ad-hoc network within Windows XP and get there iPod touch online with it? (***** that you can't import certificates on the iTouch yet...)

    Ok, a few points.
    1) I'm not sure if you are using just your laptop and the iPod. If so you will need another computer to keep the network alive. If you don't add another computer the network will stay alive for a short period of time which will allow you to at least use it for a little while.
    2) Do you have Internet connection sharing enabled in windows? Go to Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Right click your Internet connection -> Click the 'Advanced' Tab up top -> And check the box 'Allow other users to connect through this computer's Internet connection'
    3) If you have done the above or are sure your internet connection is being shared ie. Another device (other than the device directly connected to the Internet) on the network can use the Internet. Ensure that the computer connected directly to the Internet has the IP address 192.168.0.1
To check this go to Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Right click your WIRELESS network connection.
In the area below "This connection uses the following items:" scroll down to "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", select it and hit properties.
Ensure "Obtain an IP address automatically" is NOT checked. Enter the IP address 192.168.0.1 if it is not already entered. Subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0.
    Once you have done this.
On your iPod Touch go to Settings -> Wi-Fi -> Whatever your network is called (tap the blue arrow next to this)
    Under IP Address click "Static"
Enter and IP Address not used on your network. eg. "192.168.0.2" DON'T USE "192.168.0.1" as we just used it for the computer connected to the Internet!
    Subnet mask is "255.255.255.0"
Router is "192.168.0.1" - Yes I know you don't have a router but the computer connecting to the Internet is acting as one. If you wish you can also enter DNS as "192.168.0.1". I have but it shouldn't really have any impact.
You're Internet should now work assuming you don't have a proxy enabled, which I seriously doubt you would. If you do then enable HTTP Proxy below where you just entered your IP address and enter your proxy username and password.
    Everything should work now.

  • AirPlay icon for Apple TV on iPad Keeps Disappearing

Please help! Since updating to IOS8 the AirPlay icon on my two iPads (Air & new mini) keeps disappearing. I keep rebooting the WIFi router and the AirPlay system works for a minute or ten and then just disappears. The WiFi signal is strong and the phone line is in order; very weird and deeply frustrating. It all worked fine with IOS7. AirPlay is switched on.
    Thanks for any help offered.......

    Hello there BradTheAce,
It sounds like your Airplay function is intermitent on iOS 8. I would use these troubleshooting steps from the following article to help troubleshoot the issue:
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    Restart your iOS device.
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you're connected.
    Tap  and Forget this Network.
Try to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Note: You may need to enter your Wi-Fi password again if your network requires one.
Turn your Wi-Fi router off and on2. If your ISP also provides cable or phone service, check with them before attempting this step to avoid interruption of service.
Update your device to the latest version of software.
Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware2. For AirPort Base Stations, install updates using the AirPort Utility.
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings including
previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
    recently used Bluetooth accessories
    VPN and APN settings
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • How do I store the configuration of an ad-hoc network?

I have created and Ah-Hoc network in Mavericks, pretty easy. Connection to my iPad works too.
My MacBook is connected via LAN to the internet and via the Ad-Hoc conection to my iPad, the reason for that is that I work in a secure environment and this way I don't have to add my private iPad into our business network but can still share documents and I can use the connection to securely share documents while commuting.
But I haven't been able to figure out how to store this configuration so that I can use it permanently. I don't find an option for that in the Airport Preferences.
Is there a way to script that? Using Automator or so?
I am BTW good with the terminal, if there is thus a hack to do it with vim I will have no problems.
    THX

    Look into keeping multiple "Locations".
Each one is a collection of settings intended for a different place, e.g, work, starbux, home. A whole raft of individual settings are carried along with the Location file, and choosing a different pre-set "Location" sets them all.

  • IOS 4.1 / iPod Touch 4th generation and Wiindows 7 Ad Hoc Networking issue

I have an iPod Touch 1st Gen that I have been successfully using with my Win2k, Win XP, and Windows 7 laptops to transfer files via Windows' Ad Hoc Networking for a couple of years.
I just received my new iPod Touch 4th Gen iOS4.1 a few days ago and have been having trouble connecting to my Windows 7 laptop using Ad Hoc networking. On Windows 7, I created an unencrypted ad hoc wireless connection. When I try to connect with my Touch 4th Gen, the network status on the laptop keeps on saying "Waiting for users". However, if I try with my Touch 1st Gen, the network status immediately says "Connected"
Touch 4th Gen connects properly to ad hoc networking only to my Win XP and Win2k laptop. When I connect via a wireless router / access point, the iPod Touch 4th Gen is able to ping my Windows 7 laptop and I am able to do FTP file transfers. VPN PPTP and IPSEC connectivity works fine.
So the issue seems to be isolated to iOS4.1 / Touch 4th Gen and Windows 7 Ad Hoc networking.
Just tried my Touch 1st Gen iOS 3.1.3 and it's able to establish Ad Hoc networking to all windows platform that I have.
Anyone else seeing the ad hoc networking with Windows 7 and iPod Touch 4th Gen issue?

I have iPhone 4 running IOS 4.1 and ThinkPad running Vista and am experiencing a similar problem. I am able to connect to the ad-hoc network (using WEP encription as WPA2 didn't work at all) however I cannot get internet access through this network connection. My wife has an iPhone 3GS running IOS 4.0.2 and she has no problems at all connecting to the ad-hoc network and getting a connection to the internet.
I also find that my phone does not remember the pass code to connect to the network and I need to enter it each time I try to connect. The option to "Auto-Join" the network always slides back to "OFF" when I exit from the network setup page. Again my wifes phone does not have this same problem.
Looks to me like it is either an IOS 4.1 issue or iPod/iPhone 4 hardware problem.

  • Which Airprint enabled HP-Printers support ad hoc network?

I want to buy a printer/scanner for my mother who uses an iPad 2 with 3G-connection. She doesn't have Wifi. Now there are several printers which support ad hoc network so that the Ipad could directly connect to the printer and print through Airprint.
First I thought about the Photosmart 5510 or 5515, but i read here in the forum that the 5510 doesn't support ad hoc network.
Can someone please tell me which printers i could use for printing through Airprint and an ad hoc network? Will scanning directly to the Ipad also work?
Thanks a lot and best regards, O.
PS. Meanwhile I found the term "HP wireless direct" which seems to stand in for an ad hoc network. Unfortunately I haven't found any list of printers which support HP wireless direct.
    This question was solved.

    LearningAdHoc,
I am going to speak from the prospective of the m251 laserjet printer with regards to wireless direct. If you are looking at this printer's control panel and turn wireless direct on, then  your iOS device will detect it. You can even go into your Embedded Web Server (EWS) and change your wireless direct and Bonjour name if you would like to make it more recognizable or have more than one printer your would like to have on the network. Once you have done have turned on the wireless direct from your control panel, you go into your setting on your iOS device, wi-fi > choose a network > and choose the printer (caveat - the "spinning wheel" will keep turning, just ignore it).  Go back to your setting main menu and you should see that your printer has been choose as the access point. You can then go into your photos, safari, etc and print from them by choose the action button and when the menu comes up choose print > select your print (should already be selected).
The wireless direct connection and the cellular internet connection can be used at the same time but a word of caution....if you have a wi fi network setup, you will have to jump between the 2 to print....make sense?

  • Cant delete ad-hoc network

Hi, I connected my N95 successfully to my wlan at home so I could sign up for navigation. Since then I've been unable to stop it trying to connect to the network.
In my efforts to get round this I change the name of the wlan and now the phone has created an ad-hoc network of its own which it automatically connects to and I STILL cant get rid! I'm not even sure what application is keeping the connection open!
All the solutions I've read don't seem to apply here and I'm out of ideas myself. The phone is now utterly useless until I manage to solve this.
Here's hoping someone has an answer for me!

  • Using netcfg for an Ad-Hoc network

I have an app on my phone that allows me to tether via an Ad-Hoc network.  So I want to set up a netcfg profile.  I'm using what lcpci refers to as "Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection (rev 02)" and I'm using the iwl3945 module.  Here's what I wrote:
    CONNECTION="wireless"
DESCRIPTION="A simple WEP encrypted wireless connection"
    INTERFACE=wlan0
    SCAN="yes"
    SECURITY="none"
    ESSID="G1Tether "
    IP="dhcp"
    IWOPTS="mode Ad-Hoc essid $ESSID"
But ... it doesn't work.  This is what netcfg reports:
    [root@pwn network.d]# netcfg tether
:: tether up - Wireless association failed. [FAIL]
Interestingly enough, iwconfig states that it is in Managed mode, even though I used iwopts to set it to ad-hoc:
    [max@pwn ~]$ iwconfig
    lo no wireless extensions.
    wmaster0 no wireless extensions.
    wlan0 IEEE 802.11abg ESSID:"G1Tether "
    Mode:Managed Frequency:2.422 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
    Tx-Power=14 dBm
    Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr=2352 B
    Power Management:off

Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
    eth0 no wireless extensions.
Something else that is interesting: if I try to switch modes while the interface is up, it will fail:
    [root@pwn network.d]# iwconfig wlan0 mode Ad-Hoc
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Device or resource busy.
I have to manually bring the interface down with ifconfig, set it to ad-hoc, then bring it up.  Perhaps this has something to do with it, I'm not entirely sure.
What should I try to make this work?  If I use iwconfig, I can associate with my phone just fine.  It gets an IP and I'm able to go online, so it works.  And also, is there a way to use netcfg to set ad-hoc mode without using IWOPTS=()?
edit - Yes, I know there's a space in the essid, it's supposed to be that way

I even stopped the wicd daemon. No difference. It keeps trying to connect to the home network even with the router switched off.
Not sure where to go from here.

  • Ad hoc network for ipod touch

I know there's several posts about this but non are specific to my setup so I though I would create my own thread.
    My setup
I have a pc running vista 32 bit and I use this as my server. My internet connection goes through this pc and i shared amonst 3 other pcs. This pc has 2 NIC's, 1 for the internet/modem and is shared, the other to connect to my 1gb hub. I do not have a router, I have the net shared through the server pc then on to a hub which the other pcs are connected too. I have assigned static ips to the network computers and all manage to get on the net.
My laptop (win XP Pro) which is one of the computers connected to this hub also has built in wireless and I would like to know how I can use this wireless feature to get my ipod touch online as well.
The laptop is on the net using the NIC and everything is fine. For the wireless connection I setup an ad hoc connection and it's showing up in the wireless network connections in XP on the same laptop so that's running correctly. My ipod finds this wifi and does connect, however i can not browse the net using it. It keeps saying Safari can not find the server.
server pc wired - ip 192.168.0.1
    laptop wired - ip 192.168.0.2
    laptop wireless - ip 192.168.0.3
I have tried the following settings in my ipod wifi settings.
    ip 192.168.0.4
    subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    router 192.168.0.1
The wifi symbol shows up in the top left of the ipod but again it just won't connect to the internet. IS my network too complicated or not how things should be setup? I know ad hoc works but perhaps i'm not doing it right.
Any help would be great. Thanks!

Hey, thanks for reading my problem!
The vista PC has the internet in to it... cable modem with ethernet wire to NIC.
    Auto addressing through virgin media.
Same PC with a second nic with manual addressing.
    192.168.0.1
    submask 255.255.255.0
I also manually put the dns server address in here from virgin.
This nic connects to my 1gb hub.
laptop using win XP connects to this hub using nic and wire using a manual address
    192.168.0.2
    submask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1 (vista pc nic address)
dns set as to what virgin media is showing
    same laptop built in wireless.
    192.168.0.3
    submask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.0.1 (vista pc nic address)
i have tried setting the dns and allowing it to be auto but neither makes a difference.
create ad hoc connection on the laptop
    shared authentication
WEP encryption with network key i typed in
    key index = 1
advanced setting computer - computer ad hoc network only.
    Does this sound about right?
If i'm totally off then feel free to laugh LOL!
i then set my touch manually
    ip address 192.168.0.4
    submask 255.255.255.0
router 192.168.0.1 (vista gateway ip address)
    is this wrong?
Just to clarify, I do not have a router... it's a cable modem connected via a wire to my hub which is a stand alone hub that has no features. The only wireless thing i have is my built in laptop wireless chip that i created the ad hoc connection with.

  • Airport Express connected but keeps disappearing from itunes

    HI,
I have an airport express which is connected to some speakers and I'm using Airplay to stream music from Itunes to the speakers.
However the speakers keep disappearing from itunes.  If I reboot the Airport Express they reappear, then have a few hours will disappear again!
In all cases I can connect to the Airport using the configuration utility and I can ping the device, so I don't think it's a problem with the Wifi, just with Airplay.  Also the Airport express is only 4 meters from the Access Point.
I have two windows 7 machines, both using itunes (latest version) and a MAC - all machines have the same difficulty with the speakers intermittently disappearing.
Also on the network I have 2 x TVs and a Bowers and Wilkins Zeppelin - all working fine with Airplay.
The Airport Express is on version 7.5.2 and is using a static IP address.
    Any Thoughts anyone?

Did you disconnect the cable modem's power supply before re-connecting it and then attaching the AirPort Express device? Be sure to pull the power spike—don't just use an on/off switch.
On some older cable modems, it's necessary to leave the power cable unplugged for up to 12 hours or so.
