AD "Log on to" restriction causes RDP connections with network level authentication to fail

I am running a Server 2008 R2 environment and have recently enabled network level authentication for RDP connections. Since the change, users who have their logons restricted to specific servers via AD, now get an error when logging on via RDP:
An Authentication error has occured
The Local security authority cannot be contacted
After investigating this error and reading technet I found that removing the "log on to" restriction within their user object solved the problem even tho they had rights to this server. Adding the users client PC name to the "Log on
to" list also solves this issue.
My question is, is there another way around this? We have an environment where some users may require an RDP connection from a client PC not on the same domain (over VPN) as the server. It will not be practical to add many different client PC names
to the log on to list and I don't understand why client PC's must be specified in the Log on to list and not just the actual server they are logging onto.
Any pointers appreciated

I have just come across this problem on one of my client’s domains; they have recently enforced a policy to “Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication (more secure)”  and users with “Log on To” restrictions
on their account are no longer able to RDP using their second account.
After a lot of fiddling around I finally resolved the problem by adding the connecting computer name into “Log on To” list.  Ultimately it appears that Network Level Authentication (NLA) requires authentication to take place on both the host initiating
the connection and the remote host.

  • Remote Desktop Connection - Windows Network Level Authentication

    Hi
I'm trying to find a piece of Remote Desktop "Manager" software for Mac which supports Network Level Authentication (NLA). When NLA is enabled on a Windows Server I am unable to connect via CoRD or Royal TSX.
The reason I say "Manager" is because I have many, many windows servers I need to connect to and so I like to use software such as the above to save a list of all the servers for ease of access - this saves me having to type in the name of the server each time.
At the moment, for those servers with NLA enabled, I have to fire up Remote Desktop Connection for Mac and enter the name. I realise I could save this each time but then I would have LOADS of shortcuts.
Any ideas/proposals on pieces of software that can cater for this?
    Thanks!

    Hi!
Royal TSX actually supports NLA but you have to use the FreeRDP plugin instead of CoRD and enable the setting in the advanced settings of your RDP connection.
    cheers,

  • NLA Disabled. Still can't RDP; "requires Network Level Authentication"

Had a server I could RDP onto without any issue running Hyper V.
I removed the Hyper V role.
I then rebooted and attempted to RDP onto the server and can't:
The remote computer that you are trying to connect to requires Network Level Authentication (NLA), but your Windows domain controller cannot be contacted to perform NLA. If you are an administrator on the remote computer, you can disable NLA by using
the options on the Remote tab of the System Properties dialog box.
    OK... Never needed before.
I checked the network settings remotely with netsh and confirmed correct DC as DNS. So I'm scratching my head why Microsoft are lying to me?
OK, so I check the NLA settings remotely, sure enough is enabled. So I disabled via remote registry, reboot the machine, confirm the registry is set to NLA disabled again remotely and attempt to connect.
    And... Same message.
I can access any other of the 2012 R2 servers on my domain without issue. I can open AD or any other Domain tools from other servers with the same DC as the problem server as their primary DNS.
How can I get that message when both the DC is contactable and NLA is disabled?
How did removing a role cause this BS suddenly?

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Which version of client RDP you are using?
You can use RDP v8.1 for better performance.
Apart from above, Use local admin account to log on to the virtual machine and set the DNS to point to your DC. Alternatively, assign the IP address of the DC/DNS under DNS servers of virtual network.
Also when trying to remote desktop check the option “Allow connection from computers running any version of Remote desktop (less secure)” under system properties.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

Error?  I don't see any error.
Process that have errors issue error messages and codes.  They do so to assist in solving the error.  Why do you not share that information?

  • I lose connection with network whenever put MacBook Pro to sleep or reboot. Lost network configuration. Have to use diagnostics to relocate and reconnect. What is the fix?

I lose connection with network (router: Airport Extreme, latest firmware) whenever MacBook Pro put to sleep. Have to use diagnostics to reconnect. Tells me network configurations have changed, then reconnects me to network. What is the fix?

Try the following, in order, until (hopefully) resolved:
    1a. Delete Preferred Network(s)
System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced > AirPort tab
Under "Preferred Networks," delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list.
    1b. Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
    1c. Add Preferred Network(s)
System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced > AirPort tab
Add the preferred network(s) using the "+" button.
Restart or log out then back in.
    2. Move System Configuration Files
(Note: You will have to reestablish your network connections settings.)
    Go to /Library/Preferences
Move the SystemConfiguration folder to the desktop.
Restart your Mac. (Note: OS X will rebuild the files that are now sitting on your desktop. If this doesn't resolve the issue, you can move the folder back to it's original location.)

  • Can't make a connection with Network Solutions

I successfully published my site today to the GoDaddy server - no problems, the iWeb Site Publishing Settings Page worked great.
I have another site on Network solutions. I put in all the correct information in iWeb's FTP Server Settings block on the Site Publishing page. Hit "Test Connection" and it failed. Over and over and over. So get this - I call Tech Support at NetSol. They are on the line with me for half an hour and we tried everything and could not make a connection. We both gave up.
Is anyone having problems getting a connection with NetSol?
I just tested the Apple Publishing page with GoDaddy again and it still works just fine there.

  • NCO3 - Connection with Message Server via SapRouter fails

    Hello @all,
i have successfully used nco3 as client (.net framework 3.5 / VS 2008) with an application server connection via saprouter.
But i tried several ways to connect to a message server via saprouter without luck.
The parameters i used to connect:
            parameters(RfcConfigParameters.Name) = "Test"
            parameters(RfcConfigParameters.MaxPoolSize) = Convert.ToString(5)
            parameters(RfcConfigParameters.IdleTimeout) = Convert.ToString(10)

            parameters(RfcConfigParameters.LogonGroup) = "USER"
            parameters(RfcConfigParameters.SAPRouter) = ...
I always get an SAP.Middleware.Connector.RfcCommunicationException with following exception details:
    InnerException     Nothing

Because of empty error message I don't know what to do. It seems that nco3 can't get the application server from the message server, but why? The connection via the old nco2 (VS 2003) works and also if i try to connect with the saplogon ocx from sapgui (some short code in vb6) the connection is established.

  • Connection with Advanced - custom JDBC URL fails with some valid JDBC-URLs

    Hi,
I am trying to create a connection with a custom JDBC connection string, but SQL*Developer throws the error message:
Status : Failure -Test failed: Required property 'hostname' is not set on the DatabaseProvider my tests are:
<li> with connection via Connection Type set to TNS and a proper alias - it works fine
<li> with connection via Connection Type set to Advanced and exactly the same values from tns in the url: jdbc:oracle:thin:@(DESCRIPTION=(enable=broken)(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=172.24.32.113)(PORT=1521))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=RESTSVP_SITE1))) - it fails with Status : Failure -Test failed: Required property 'hostname' is not set on the DatabaseProvider<li> with JDBC URL set to jdbc:oracle:thin:@172.24.32.113:1521/RESTSVP_SITE1 - it works fine

Edited by: berx on Oct 12, 2012 11:32 AM - fixed typos

    Hi Martin,
    1/oci/thick
    2/RAC options
    3/TNS connection
    1/oci/thick
OCI driver has a slightly different set of features than thin:
-try oci/thick (requires Oracle Client, server or instant client) (It requires SQLDeveloper java and .dll, .so libraries to match)Re: SQL developer 3.1 shows error Incompatible version of libocijdbc
    jdbc:oracle:oci:@(DESCRIPTION=(enable=broken)(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=your_host_name)(PORT=1521))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=your_service_name)))
    2/RAC options
    More speculatively:
-Try sid instead of service name (will disable some networking features on that connection), try switching load balancing off.
From: Unable to access RAC from SQL Developer!
In general and especially for RAC database you should use SERVICE_NAME to connect and not SID (because only SERVICE_NAME can use load balancing and failover features):
    3/TNS connection
with connection via Connection Type set to TNS and a proper alias - it works fine(Which Connection Type TNS did you use? TNS Connect Identifier = oci/thick, TNS Network alias (can be thin (I should check, might depend on oci/thick checkbox))
Is this issue stopping your work i.e. is this workaround unacceptable?

  • When on internet my iMac keeps going to gray screen with message reading 'You are not connected to the internet'. My wireless connection is fine for my other devices, why does my iMac keep losing connection with network?

I have read other post about this and one of them said to uncheck "enable auto channel scan" in my router settings and chang from chanel 6 to 5.  I was able to change the channel to 5 but i can't find anywhere on their page where it has the option to uncheck "enable auto channel scan".  I have a Netgear router WGT624 v3.  Can anyone recomend anything?

I've had this problem for months and finally called Apple support and paid the one time support fee to get a solution.  I purchased a 21.5" iMac in the summer of 2011 and am currently running OS X 10.7.3.  After confirming all my wifi settings were correct (already suspected this, since every other wireless device in the house works great), the Apple support tech recommended changing channels on my router from "Enable Auto Channel Scan" to one channel out of the 11 available.  I currently have a D-Link DIR-655 router, but the tech said the same structure exists on all wireless routers.  In other words, my situation would not improve if I bought an Apple router (Airport Extreme, Time Capsule, etc).  I logged into my router (here are common IP addresses for routers...  http://compnetworking.about.com/od/workingwithipaddresses/f/getrouteripaddr.htm , and made the channel preference change (in my case, unchecked "enable auto channel scan" and changed from channel 6 to channel 5).  It's been a few days since applying this change and so far, I haven't lost my connectivity. Even though I live in a residential subdivision (not an apartment / condo), my iMac is detecting up to 21 other local networks and this was causing interference (some of my neighbors using the same channel).   Sure enough, when I check the channels of nearby networks, I find many are using channel 6 and no one is using channel 5.  To find out what nearby network channels are being used, go to Apple icon in top left, "about this Mac", "more info", "system report", under network choose "wifi", scroll down and see other wifi network info.  Changing the router channel from auto enable to a specific channel has improved both my internet connectivity and speed (not sharing same channel with neighbors).  Hope this helps!

  • Problem with Restrict Access to Page with access level using ASP

I'm using Dreamweaver CS3 with ASP-VBScript and an Access
database. The pages were created from scratch for this project,
using those tools all the way through.
I've created a login page, an admin homepage, and add, edit,
and list records pages for three tables. The login page uses the
Server Behavior "Log in User", all other pages use the Server
Behavior "Restrict Access to Page". All of these are based on an
    Access Level.
Login seems to work correctly, and redirects to the admin
homepage. From the admin homepage, I can open any other page as
expected, and they initially display correctly. On the add and edit
    pages, however,
submitting the form often results in getting logged out, but
    not always.
Once this happens, I can log back in, but other problems will
sometimes occur during that second login session. Sometimes,
logouts will occur on pages that worked fine during the first login
session. Sometimes, another session variable that I've setup
manually will change when it shouldn't...as if there were two
values stored for my session variable, and reloading the page
    changes to the other value.
    This
post seems closest to my experience, but it doesn't look like
there was really an answer beyond "I had to fight with it for a bit
    to get it to work":
I suspected that there is some problem with session settings
on the server. We have an almost identical tool on the same server
that was developed with an older version of DW that works more
reliably; it sometimes has problems with the initial login, but
never has a problem after that.
Has anyone experienced problems like this? Any suggestions
for what to check? I'm really pulling my hair out since it's so
unreliable...the kind of problem that goes away when you try to
show someone and comes back when they leave.

    Hello,
I was thinking that all I would need would be the username, although username and paswsword would be more secure.  There are about 50 users and no groups or levels.  They are all equal ... same level.
The website is private and there is a general content area for all users and then there will be private areas for each user where proprietary documents will be held.  I need to be able to ensure that user 'A' can only see the user 'A' pages, user 'B' can only see user 'B', etc.
I don't really understand what the Dreamweaver script is doing, but the overview sounded like it was the right tool to accomplish what I'm trying to do.
    Any assistance greatly appreciated.
    thanks.

  • Ipad won't remain connected with network

I can connect our Ipads to our home wireless network (Netgear) without a problem, but they both intermittently drop their logins and have to be manually logged back in. This doesn't happen with my Macbook or my Iphone. What gives? They are both registered in my router.

    Try #5.
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

I have installed xmii in my laptop and created some application which i sent permission to a user created by myself.
When i try to unplug the laptop from the network and try to access xMII its directly going into the home page without asking login. I want a specfic user to be logged in and role it displays in the  xMII main page as Local Adminstrator not the Role which was there in xMII.

look at the list of Trusted Servers in Security Services.  If you log in from any of these, you will automatically be logged in as admin.  It doesn't matter if you use the hostname or IP.  If you find your IP listed as one of the Trusted Servers, remove it, save, and open a new browser window and try logging in again.  You need to start a new browser session - not open another window in an existing session.
If you need to have your machine listed as a trusted server and you don't want to be automatically logged in as admin, then you're out of luck.  I've tried using the loopback adapter to get around this; in Windows that won't work either because of the braindead way Microsoft implemented the loopback adapter.  Your only recourse is VMware or the like...
