    Hi Ged
    • Upgrade your computer to ‘N’ standard wireless hardware. If needed, buy a suitable N wireless adaptor from BT atwww.bt.com/nwireless
    • Keep your computer streamlined eg. by running our ‘PC Healthcheck’ app (part of BT’s Desktop Help software atwww.bt.com/desktophelp)
    • Reserve wireless for mobile devices, use Ethernet for main computer
    • Consider powerline adaptors for longer ranges

How soon after an exchange goes live with Infinity will BT allow other providers to sell Fibre To The Cabinet services from that exchange? My existing ISP is waiting to announce pricing details to me so I can make an informed choice. Thanks

Are we able to get fastpath on BT infinity,or will this ever be available ?
    7:12
    Martin S.:
i Neil. When Openreach enables an exchange for fibre, all internet service providers are able to use that service equally - so other ISPs should be able to offer their fibre products at the same time as BT Retail's Infinity product
    7:12
    KerryG:
Thanks for all the great questions coming through guys... answers being typed as we speak!
    7:13
    Charles:
Hi Paul, We don't support Fastpath on BT infinity at the moment, I'm afraid.
    7:13
    Comment From Helen
I've recently upgraded to Infinity 2. The ethernet connection is fine, but the wifi is constantly dropping. I have an old Homehub 2 , which we had for total broadband, will it work, so I can test the wifi.

    Hi all
    7:15
    Martin S.:
Neil - also its worth remembering that when an exchange is enabled for fibre, this does not automatically mean that all cabinets and lines connected to that exchange are also enabled, which might explain if your exchange has been enabled but your line is not appearing as eligible yet
    7:16
    Comment From Kevin
Whats the upgrade path from fttc to fttp does it mean a new contract or can we just expect it to migrate?
    7:17
    KerryG
Out of interest...are those on the chat existing Infinity customers or people thinking about it?
    7:18
    Charles
Hi Helen, your wireless should work ok on your Hub 2, though our more recent Hub 3 is better. If you're expereincing drop outs, it's usually a sign of radio interference. Have you any powerline adaptors you could use instead?
    7:18
    Comment From Neil Potter
Thanks Martin - Workmen recently dug up the path outside my driveway to install FTTC so I know it's there  My exchange goes live on 30th June - I can't wait!I have another question: I'm in the process of consolidating my TV, Telephone and Broadband into one bundle. The "BT Vision Unlimited" looks ideal.
    7:19
    Comment From Paul
Is there a estimated date that fast path will be available ?
    7:19
    Martin S.
Hi Kevin - Due to the structure of how fibre has been deployed, your line will either be FTTC or FTTP; there is no way to change your technology type. If you mean 'how do you move to the faster 80mb product (on FTTC)?', this can be done using the links on BT.com

Why are you fitting 2 separate items a modem and a wireless router? cant we have a combined unit, without the need for 2 adaptors and sockets its not the tidiest install
    7:21
    Comment From Chris
Regarding the Infinity installation, is it mandatory for the BT O/R Engineerer to have access to your PC?
    7:22
    Martin S.
Hi Chris - It is not mandatory, but we recommend allowing the engineer to show you on your own equipment your fantastic new speeds!
    7:22
    Comment From Simon
hi, im trying to setup port forwarding to my old draytek, as it has more powerful wirelelss capabaility then the bt homehub, is it possible
    7:23
    KerryG
Hi Simon - that sounds like a great question for the forum boards, the Draytek is not a BT product so we can go into detail here in this chat, but there will be lots of people who i'm sure can help in the forum.
    7:24
    Charles
Evening Kevin, for BT Infinity is based on thecurrent FTTC product offered by BT Openreach, which comprises the VDSL modem provided by Openreach and the Home Hub 3 provided by Retail. If/when Openreach move to supporting a single box solution, then we would look to moving to that. Openreach will shortly be trialling this.
    7:24
    Comment From Helen
I've already checked there's nothing interfering with the Hub.
    7:24
    Comment From Helen
I don't have a Hub3, both the one that is currently connected, and the old one I have in the box are Hub 2.
    7:25
    Comment From Chris
Yes, going from 3mb to an estimated 50mb+ is quite the upgrade, I would even be happy if it was merely a 10MB upgrade. - If I remember correctly FTTC is around(if not the same) price as standard broadband these days.
    7:26
    Charles
Helen - could you post your issue in the Bt Infinity forum and one of our mods will look into this for you.
    7:26
    Comment From Kevin
My install is planned for the 28th May my question is i have my master socket downstairs directly below the room i want my fttc modem installed is it possible to have the modem upstairs with the extension cable ?
    7:27
    Comment From Mike B
I have an istalation question. I understand that the modem for Infinity needs to be sited close to the BT phone socket. Am I right in thinking that the modem is then connected via a Cat 5/6 cable to the wireless router situated elsewhere in the house? Does this impact on the speed?
    7:27
    Comment From Helen
    Ok charles, I will do..

    Comment From Neil Potter
On the subject of Powerline Adaptors (PA's) - I have a unique setup here at home whereby I would need to utilise 4 x PA's. Are there any known performance issues sharing data, experiencing latency or dropped packets from Desktop PC's all connected via PA's at the same time?
    7:28
    Martin S.
Kevin / Mike B: The engineer can use an extension cable up to 30m long to help position your equipment where you want it - this should not affect your speed.
    7:29
    Comment From Eric Simpson
I have bt broadband .. I am currently getting 3M download. I have two "estimates" from the BT site. One says I should get between 10-17 ... the other which does some sort of check/diagnostic (and appears to be the real thing) says I should get between 1-4. We are meant to get Infinity next month. How would that impact me?
    7:31
    Charles
Hi neil - good question. I've found from experience that powerline performance is very much dependent on the adaptor manufacturer and your home environment, specifically how 'clean' your electrical spectrun is. All I can say is give it a try. That said, i would always recommend an Ethernet connection for the fastest and most stable speeds.
    7:31
    Martin S.
Hi Eric. You can find your predicted BT Infinity speed (if it is available on your line) at bt.com/infinity and entering your number into the availability checker
    7:31
    Comment From Simon
hi, really I'm just asking a tech question - can the bt home hub port forward?
    7:32
    Comment From Eric Simpson
Does my question pop up only when it comes up the queue?
    7:33
    KerryG
Hi Eric - Yes, they will flow in as they get answered - it helps to make the chat easier to read as the Q & As flow in a reasonable order.
Great questions coming through... lots more to get through...been a quick 33 mins!
    7:33
    Charles
Hi simon - I'm assuming you're talking about the Hub 3 (our latest Hub). Yes, it does support port forwarding. You can set this up via the configuration menu in your Hub. See instructions in your Hub user guide for how to do this.

Hello folks. I have a question. We often see on the Vision forum that users start having problems with their service on Infinity that they weren't having with ADSL. Do you know of anything that would cause this?
    7:35
    Martin S.
Hi Glynn, we are currently reviewing Fibre on Demand and have not yet announced any pricing or availability details.

    7:38
    Charles
HI guilbo - I'm not aware of any technical issues for Vision customer regrading to Infinity. We have hundreds of orders go through each week. If the problem persists, I would suggest customers contact the Infinity helpdesk.
    7:38
    Comment From Neil Potter
Thanks for your reply Charles - If I could ask, the PA's you supply with the current BT Vision boxes are manufactured by Simpler Networks - would I need to purchase identical PA's from the same manufacturer for extending my network? Will BT Retail sell me these as an additional extra? This will be my last question - I feel I have been fortunate to have two answered already
    7:39
    Martin S.
Hi Chris - The speeds estimated in the checker are a very good indication of actual speeds, but we can only know the exact speed once installed.
    7:39
    Comment From Eric Simpson
it says not available yet. I am just frustrated because I get faster speed from my little Android phone using it as a hotspot. If there is a bottleneck somewhere in the system, would fibre really make a difference
    7:41
    Comment From Kevin
I have been given the estimate of 59.4Mb download 20.0Mb upload will this be accurate?
    7:42
    Charles
Hi neil - yes you should always stick to the same model for all your PA's. I am pretty sure that additional Vision PA's can be bought from the BT Shop, and these should be fine. I have had 70mbps out of mine! seewww.bt.com/shop
    7:43
    Martin S.
Eric - Generally fibre can make a very significant difference to overall speeds, though individual increases can't be guaranteed. If / when it becomes available on your line, the checker will tell you how much of a difference it could make to you.
    7:43
    Comment From Chris
I'm assuming it's based on the length of copper from my house to the Green Cab. - The exchange is 2miles~ away from me and the said Cab. Will this also effect my speed?
    7:45
    Charles
Hi Kevin - our estinmates are as accurate as we can make them, but your actual speed will depend on your underlying phone line speed. We will only know your true speed once Infinity is live - it will then train to your optimal line speed, which should be approx as shown by your prediction.
    7:45
    KerryG
Glad to see you all keeping Charles and Martin busy here... keep the questions coming in, we're in the last 15 mins now...
    7:45
    Martin S.
Chris - Yes, your speed is primarily affected by the total amount of copper between you and the exchange. With FTTC fibre products, the old copper between the exchange and the cabinet is replaced by fibre, meaning less copper overall and faster speeds.

The Cab is 500-600 metres away from me, and according this graph the the BT estimated speed is just right on that.
    7:47
    Charles
Hi Lewis - DLM will apply interleaving only if it detects an ustable line. It will not apply interleaving unless it is warranted.
    7:47
    Comment From Kevin
I guess when i get my infinity installed a lot of sites and links will still be on dsl or adsl+ or even slower and the speed my end wont improve the speed there end ie my speed will depend on the site i visit and there upload speed for my download speed?
    7:48
    Comment From Dom
I am moving to BT infinity, but I had to order my line and then wait for it to be activated before ordering infinity. Is this a technical issue or a process at BT issue?
    7:49
    Charles
Evening Dom. It's a process issue - we can only provide Infinity once a Retail line is up and running.
    7:49
    Comment From William Sinclair
Hi guys. I've upgraded to Infinity 2 with an estimated max download of 49.5 Mbps however my IP profile hasn't budged from the Infinity 1 value of ~30. Any thoughts?

Hi Kevin - yes, some websites that you visit may not be able to keep up with your superfast speeds! We aim to give you the best speeds at your end, but sadly there may sometimes be bottlenecks in the wider internet.
    7:51
    Charles
HI William - sorry for the delay in responding. Best thing to do is to reboot your Hub, then it should pick up the new speed. If not, contact the Infinity forum.

Apologies in advance for my ignorance. If Infinity is installed does the 'phone continue to use copper all the way to the exchange or does this also go over fibre?
    7:54
    Charles
Hi lewis - the most common cause is interference on your phone line, in which case DLM will moderate your BB speed until the line stablises. There'smore lot of info on this at the Infinity FAQs on BT.com
    7:54
    Martin S.
Hi Guilbo - good question - yes, the phone still uses the copper.

  • Changing Header and Footer in Discussion Channel

    Hello,
I need to change the header and footer graphics and links for the page that displays when you search for Discussion Channel topics and displaying Ciscussion Channel posts. I have been looking in the DiscussionProvider directory and I am now looking through the SearchProvider directory. Does anybody have an idea of the locations of the Header and Footer files?

I am sure someone in this forum has had the desire to change the headers from the default of SUN ONE Portal Server and has accomplished this throughout their implementation. Please help! I have succeeded in some containers like the JSPEditContainer so when someone edits bookmarks from a BookmarkProvider channel they see a header that I define, but not in the SearchProvider nor the DiscussionProvider directories. I have seen no mention or <include header.jsp> tags in the jsp files for either of these providers, and I have copied header.jsp and menubar.jsp to both of those directories but it is not picking up the files. Do these containers find the header and menubar.jsp file contents from another location?

  • Lumia Imaging SDK and PubCenter on WP8.1 RT : System.TypeLoadException

Hello, i'm developping a WP8.1 RT app using the Lumia imaging SDK for 8.1 and it's working like a charm. Recently, I had to put some PubCenter ads on my layout. When navigating to a page that is making calls to Imaging library, I catch an exception : "Requested
Windows Runtime type 'Lumia.Imaging.RandomAccessStramingImageSource' is not registered".
I tried reinstalling the Imaging SDK through nuget. The only way to make my code work again is to delete the reference 'Microsoft Advertising SDK for Windows Phone 8.1 (XAML)'.
I also tried to add this reference on a Lumia Imaging Sample from the official website, same problem but on different methods from the Lumia.Imaging namespace.
Do you guys already experienced this kind of errors ? Is PubCenter known to work with the Lumia Imaging SDK ? If not, is there any other good ad provider on WP8.1 RT (since Admob is no longer supported...)

This looks like is a Visual Studio 2013 update 4 issue, or if you are using Community Edition which includes this update.
The "Requested Windows Runtime type <class> is not registered" exception is caused by that fact that the appxmanifest is file is not correctly generated in VS2013 update 4. There is a bug in Microsoft.Build.AppxPackage.dll, creating an incomplete
list of classes to be registered. This is supposed to be fixed in VS2013 update 5.
    Workaround:
Replace the AppxPackage files with VS2013 update 3 version.
    - Microsoft.AppxPackage.Targets
    - Microsoft.Build.AppxPackage.dll
Replace the two files located at VS2013 installation path (e.g. C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v12.0\AppxPackage\ ) with the update 3 version.
The update 3 files are available here (patch.zip):

  • Discussion Forum  - Retain Portal Login

    Hi all,
Hope I'm in the right place for this.
We are looking to install a discussion forum solution (currently running 9.0.4.1.0 - Build: 129).
Ideally we would like the forum to work in the following way:
A user logs into the portal, clicks on 'Discussion Forum' tab and posts a message. We would like the message to insert their login name (#USER.FULLNAME#) along with their message i.e. the user doesnt have to register to the forum, or enter their name or email.
Is this possible with any of the forums out there?
    Thanks for your time.

    Hi There,
    <p/>
You could check out the Oracle Provider for Jive Discussion Forums on Portal Integration Solutions page. You will need to buy Jive Discussion Forums and then install the providers.
    <p/>
What you are asking for is definitely possible as the portlets provide a single sign-on mechanism to the users.
    <p/>
    thanks
    Harsha

    I have AS 10.1.2.0.0.
I deployed the Discussion Forum successfully -> I can access the provider test page.
But when I try to register the forum provider in Portal I get the following error:
    Internal error (WWC-00006)
An unexpected error occurred: Invalid column index (WWC-43000)
Any help would be highly appreciated as there is no support through OS for it and I don't have any idea what's going wrong...
    Best Regards
    Manfred

  • Interconnecting MDS 9148 with 2 different Fiber Providers

    Hi
I would like discuss the following issue :
We have 2 HP SAN EVA 8400 ( one at the production site and one at our Disaster Recovery site ) replicating using a fiber channel service from ( 2* FC dark fiber from PROVIDER A )
They are linked together  with 4 Cisco MDS 9148 Multilayer Fabric Switch (2 fabric ).
We have recently purchased a new fiber service ( 2* 1Gb FC managed service from PROVIDER B) in order to create a port channel  with the 2 running ones and we have some problem.
We disconnected the PROVIDER A FC ( running for 10 years now )  and left the SAN replication during a couple of days running with the new PROVIDER B 1 Gb FC to make sure the link was stable and we had no issue.
Then we tried to connect the 2 FC together from the 2 providers and tried to create a Port channel.
However we discovered that to create a PortChannel, interfaces must have the same configurations ( speed, mode, rate )
In our case , the interface FC 1/1 using PROVIDER A link is running at 4 Gb and the interface FC 1/2 using PROVIDER B is running at 1 Gb

Have you already seen that kind of situation ?
Is there a best practice  to reduce the interface speed in order to create the PortChannel with identical interface setup ?
Your help and advice would be much appreciated.

the RTT delay by each link is different and this is causing packets to arrive out of order.
not sure if port channeling between two different links or different characteristics is good practive.

The buzz around BT and The Digital Economy Act
    Hi everyone
Perhaps if you've read the news, you'll know that BT is legally challenging the UK’s Digital Economy Act because it says it is unfair to customers. If you're wondering what it's all about, here's some info.
    Thanks

What is the Digital Economy Act and how does it affect me?
The Digital Economy Act is designed to prevent copyright infringement by requiring internet service providers to act against persistent offenders. BT and TalkTalk have concerns about the Act and have asked for a judicial review to find out whether the Act is enforceable under European rules.
How would service providers be expected to act against persistent offenders?
Service providers could be asked to cut off an entire household's internet connection. This assumes guilt and would ensure that everyone in a household stopped using the internet for legitimate purposes; other people would suffer the consequences too.
Don’t you agree with protecting copyright?
Breach of copyright is entirely wrong but action against those who access or share music, movies and other material unlawfully needs to follow due process and be proportionate.
Are you inviting us to have a discussion on the DE Act?
    And BT's challenge to it?
Privacy, internet copyright infringement, tracking, EU e-Privacy Directive, and all that stuff?
    Clauses 1 - 48 and Schedules 1 & 2?

Which section of this forum should we kick off in please?
Or is here the right place?
And what are the guidelines for such a discussion please? In terms of what we can say, and quote and link to?
And what opinions we can express?
    Are you SURE about this?

    Hi Linda_Smith
This announcement was for info for everyone as I know there has been press coverage on this. We don’t have anything else to say on this at the moment.

  • Discussion forum Cannot find the configuration file config\common\bc4j.xcfg

I successfully deployed the discussion form portlet and registered it with portal. I can reach the provider test page at Http://myserver:7777/forum/providers/forum
Everything seems to be good except when I add the portlet to a page, and then view the page, I see an error in the portlet:
"Unable to perform the operation: JBO-29000: Unexpected exception caught: oracle.jbo.JboException, msg=JBO-33001: Cannot find the configuration file config\common\bc4j.xcfg in the classpath"
I have verified that bc4j.xcfg (as I have modified it) exists in:
    $IAS_HOME\j2ee\OC4J_Portal\applications\forum\forum\WEB-INF\classes\config\common
I followed the instructions exactly. Does anyone know how to resolve this error? I'm running portal 9.0.2.3.0B, PDK 9.0.2.6.2 and the latest discussion forum download (downloaded 7/1/2004)
    Many thanks in advance!

    No ideas anyone?

  • External RAID-1 storage providers?

I'm looking for suggestions and providers of RAID-1 (mirroring) storage solutions. I work in-house for a corporate video company and we think that an external RAID-1 storage would be best. I'm also very open to hear what other people think would work for us as i'd rate my technical knowledge at intermediate.
All our work is currently DV25. We may switch to HDV in 2 years or so. Currently we're working off various single drive Firewire or USB 2.0-based hard drives. Thus, I don't believe read speed is a concern for our needs. Also, I read alot about the drive speeds of technology like SATA III, so maybe read speed is a null issue?
We like RAID-1 for it's simplicity, it's very easy to understand how it works . It also feels like the right 'place' we'd like to be on the backup spectrum. We could be more intense with the backups (e.g. multiple backup drives at off-shore locations) or less intense (simply burn project files to DVD), so RAID-1 feels like a nice balance.
Cost is almost a null issue. But we're looking for a solution that provides for some portability. So we're not looking for some intense multi-server rack solution, but more something like a typical LaCie drive that we can put into our backpack and move to a different location. We definietly don't mind paying extra for the 'backup' drive as it pays off for us in piece of mind and ease of use.
How we're basically looking to do this is that when we're done a project and the RAID-1 is near full, we would simply catalogue it (whole different discussion lol), then place it on a nice looking shelf for clients to gawk at. We don't generate a ton of data. With the availability of 1+ TB hard drives, we would probably only be putting one or two RAID-1 drives into our storage space per year.
In terms of a RAID-1 drive/provider, we'd prefer to deal with a company that would still be around and relevant ~10 years down the road. Great customer service is also key. Internal build quality is important, and i'd be very happy to have an ugly ugly chassis if the internal parts were top notch. We also live in Canada incase that's an issue. We bought a G-Tech drive a while back and had to pay an extra 20% on it due to import duties .

Thanks Shane for the reply! My last experience with 'hot swap' was ~5 years ago with a server. It required a bunch of special trays, and I had extra hard drives pre mounted into these trays for hot swap daily backups. What is hot swapping a drive like now a days? Is it simply plug and play?
How durable is the CalDigit FirewireVR? The front grill looks delicate :S. As I may bring the drive to different locations (though it would be reasonably cushioned), durability is important to me.
Would you recommend that I buy spare hard drives directly from the enclosure manufacturer (e.g. CalDigit)? Do you know why they are so expensive (250 GB drive from CalDigit ~$120), higher quality? Since i'm doing RAID-1, would it be ok for me to buy drives from Best Buy (could get 500 GB for ~$100).
Also to clarify my previous post, our intention would be to use multiple enclosures. So once the RAID-1 is filled, we would NOT take out both hard drives and put them on the shelf. Rather we'd prefer to simply put the enclosure, WITH the hard drives inside, onto the shelf.
But if hot swapping IS simply 'plop in the naked hard drive and you're good to go', then maybe I'd be open to simply storing the RAID-1 hard drive pair on the shelf...

  • Malformed URL Exception causing discussion channels to fail.

    Hello,
I created several new discussion channels in role level DisplayProfileXML files using DiscussionsProvider. The channels are not displaying proper content but are displaying error messages: ERROR: Content is not available
This function worked previously using the defalt discussions channel that was already created with the install of the sample portal
I have tried restarting the server, doing the redeploy command.
Here is the error text. Any help would be appreciated!

Found it - stepping into the remoteObject.execute() call in debug mode, I eventually got to the class that throws the error (com.sap.tc.webdynpro.model.webservice.model.WSGenericModelClassExecutable).  In the catch block of the operation invoke call, the actual error object is visible in the NWDS variables list - it was an XmlMarshallException:
"com.sap.engine.services.webservices.jaxrpc.exceptions.XmlMarshalException: XML Serialization Error. Property [LOVLanguageMode] of class [com.bp.models.siebel.servicerequest.ServiceRequestQueryPage_Input] must exist and can not be null. This is required by schema description."
So I hadn't populated a mandatory field in the xml!

One further point, please no offense intended.
I lost access to my blogger account with Google several years ago, automated spam clearing bot of Google just deleted everything. Months passed before I managed to actually get my data restored. My point here is I now simply do not trust the "cloud" with my data. They make no substantive guarantees as to privacy, nor availability on a day to day basis or in the longer term. So I am wed to a local copy as well as a cloud copy. I think they cover different loss scenarios. My local copy might get wet or burned, the cloud might get hacked or the company just loose the data.
Some suggestions I can make that might help long term is create an exception for the Thunderbird profile folders in your anti virus program. They do not need to be scanned every time you move or delete a mail.
Turn off incoming mail scanning. Especially if your are using Nortons. Most Thunderbird users are using SSL or TLS. Most ISP's and free mail providers now require it. Nortons does not scan email over encrypted connections. So the functionality can only have a downside.

  • Discussion Forum installation problem

    Hi,
I'm having trouble installing the discussion forum by Peter Moskovits. The test page (http://server:port/df/providers) gives the message "The page cannot be found". It seems to be looking for a /df/ directory under /htdocs/. Can anyone help me?
    Thanks

PS. I have Portal 902 installed on Windows 2000.

    Hi Carey,
Has the application been deployed successfully (ear file unzipped, ...)?
Did you make all the necessary changes to the config files (http-web-site.xml, server.xml)? Can you double-check whether you have any typos in there?
Could you post the relevant sections of the config files here?

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.
