Adapter and new video iPod

Hi, I just bought my first Ipod (30 GB video) and the $30 power adapter, but the USB cable that came with the iPod does not physically fit in the adapter - do I need to buy ANOTHER accessory to connect these two?

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Are you sure you bought a USB power adapter and not a firewire adapter? Is the port on the adapter rectangular?

  • Problems with my new Video iPod

Hi, I just got a brand new black 30GB video iPod, so far it has been great. However, I've noticed a problem with the HD. Whenever the HD is spinning up and the iPod is moved you can hear the HD clunk. It also tends to make a odd whirring noise when I move the iPod around. If the iPod is moving around during startup (Apple logo appears) it will clunk and I will get the sad iPod icon. This doesn't seem right, this is exactly what my previous iPod did (20GB 4G) and that is why I got the new video iPod as a replacement. It just doesn't seem right for it to do this. Has anyone else noticed this before or do I just have bad luck with my iPod's? Secondly, I was considering buying the Apple USB power adapter. It is possible to buy a 3rd party charger for less money than what Apple wants? It's really stupid to not have a charger included on a device this expensive.

The sad face icon usually means the hard drive is dead. If you're seeing it, it sounds like your hard drive is about to die. I'd exchange it or get it repaired. One thing I would do now too is to do the diagnostic on the iPod just to see if the hard drive is bad. Reset the iPod by pressing Menu and Center. Right when the Apple logo appears, quickly hold down Center and RW. Press Menu to do manual test, go to IO, go to HardDrive, and then to HDSmartData. If the hard drive is good, it gives values for retracts, reallocs, and some other numbers.
Third party USB power adapters should work fine, and yes I agree it is cheesy and cheap for Apple not to include one, which they used to when they were nicer.

  • New Video iPod will not connect

I have a new video ipod that will connect on one computer but not the one I want to use. I have reloaded itunes several times and checked firewall. When I plug the ipod in the computer makes three dings. Is this an error code of some type? It will not show up in diagnostics and after trying it shuts down internet connection until computer is re-booted. It connects fine on the other computer. Has anyone got any answers? I have tried different plugs and it shows to charge just will not connect.

You want to check and see if the other computer has usb 2.0 first.
If it does try to reset the ipod while it is plugged into the computer. Reset is the menu and the center button on the ipod. Also make sure the hold switch is all white.
Also you want to make you that you try different usb ports.
If that doesn't work use msconfig type that into the search here on the support page let me know if this works.

  • Does the new Video iPod scratch as easily as the old?

I'm thinkig aobut getting a new 80gb Video Ipod to replace my "old" 30 GB video iPod. Does the new version scratch as easily as the old?

I've been to Bestbuy and Circuit City also, no scratches on any of the new video iPods yet. They must have switched to a scratch resistant plastic for the screens. I've looked at the new video iPods at the Apple store, Bestbuy, and Circuit City and none show the slightest scuff after a few weeks. The only scratch I saw was where someone intentionally damaged one of the screens with a knife or something.

  • New video ipod has russian settings

I just took my new video ipod out of the shrink wrap and powered it up and everything is in Russian. Since I only speak english I don't know how to reset the language settings. Can anyone explain how to set the language to english. This is a bummer.

You can restore it using the ipod software that comes on the cd. This will change it back to factory settings so you can start from scratch.

  • Error 1418 on BRAND NEW Video ipod - Only 48 hours old!

    Hi,
Just upgraded from a click wheel ipod to a new 80GB video Ipod. Installed itunes 7.02 and everything worked fine. Last night got the message saying an update was avaliable for my ipod so I clicked update and since then I get the following messages
    1. The ipod could not be read from or written to.
    2. The ipod is in recovery mode and needs to be restored
    3. Unknown error - 1418
    I have tried
    1. 5r's
    2. Reformat through windows
The ipod now says it is corrupt and needs to be restored through itunes but itunes only returns the 1418 message.
I have googled this to death and there seems to be alot of issues with the new firmware. I am really annoyed as I havent even had chance to listen to my music yet and ive spent alot of money on it.
Any one have any ideas please, any other Video users had a similar problem after the firmware update?
    Thanks

The link works for me. However, here's the post.

Downloaded iTunes 7 and you've gone through the 5 R's until your red in the face?
    * This probable solution 'stumbled upon' using a 60GB video. I have no idea if the process will work the same for nano. But if your desperate and have backed up your library... full steam ahead.
If you've noticed that your iPod does not show up in My Computer, but shows up in iTunes, and the new Update or Restore option within iTunes (Summary tab of a recognized iPod) doesn't work (choosing 'Update' gives you error 1417 and 'Restore' gives you error 1418 - whatever they mean) then give this a try:
    1. Restart your computer - just to make sure we're all on the same page
    2. Start up/Load iTunes
    3. Connect your iPod to your computer - it may take a little time for iTunes to connect to your device
    4. When the dialogue box pops up telling you that a new version of firmware (ver. 1.2) is available choose: INSTALL
    5. As iTunes shows you a progressive bar of 'installing' (the bar scrolls across again and again) use the "Safely Remove Hardware" option in your taskbar and stop "Apple iPod USB Device". The computer will then tell you that the device can now be removed
    6. "Installing" continues... plug in/connect iPod again. The "Install" continues like nothing's happened. Weird, huh?
    7. Apple logo and Update status bar should now appear on your dimmed iPod screen (because of no backlight)
    8. At this point, dialogue box pops up on computer to tell you that updating continues
    9. "Do Not Disconnect" symbol will then show on your iPod
    10. Process finishes after a time, and now the Summary tab says the iPod has been updated.
HA!!! If this is all that troubles you - HUZZAH! And I hope this helped.
Now that we've come this far... I've found that when I normally open iTunes and plug in my iPod to aunto-sync, I now get ERROR (-50) -> Mac needs to get a database online or something to tell me what these 'errors' mean so I don't freak out when I get one...
    1. Go BACK to the Summary tab or your recognized deive in iTunes. Now choose RESTORE. Make sure whatever is on your iPod can be replaced
    2. This part takes time
    3. Computer will pop with dialogue box saying that iPod is restored and being changed to factory settings
    4. Prompt then pops up for you to name your little iPod. At this stage you can choose to 'Auto-sync songs and vids when connected' or 'Auto-sync photos' and from which directory. It's up to you.
    5. iTunes will then thank you for registering your iPod. From this point, the files are copied to your device. Depending on how large your library is affects how long this process takes.

  • Just bought new video ipod need help

    Hey everyone...
Yesterday I bought a new 30gig black video ipod.
Using some programs i bought on the internet, i was able to convert the movie "Animal House" to MP4 and put it on itunes.
The computer I did this on was my brothers computer since my computer does not read DVDs... I thought once the movie was in his itunes and in his library, I could simply drag the movie from his library to my ipod but it is not working. I do not know how else to get the movie onto my ipod. This is the second ipod i have bought and all my music is on my computer (Windows... not mac) Please help... thanks in advance

Hey again... i dont think I really told everyone what was going on so sorry...
I have all of my music on my computer and my ipod has that music from my computer.
I was using my brothers computer to download this movie because my computer does not work with DVDs and i got it in his itunes on his computer. It is in the right format on his computer. I thought once it was in his library in his itunes, I could plug my ipod into his computer and drag it from his library to my ipod. That is what i used to do with my ipod mini but for some reason it was not working with the video. Is there any way to get the video from his computer to my ipod without syncing my ipod for that computer. Thanks again.

  • Is there any way to import my OWN DVD movies into iTunes and my video iPod?

I just purchased the new 30 GB video iPod last week, and although I have already purchased a few movies from the iTunes store, I wanted to know if there was a way to import a DVD movie from my own DVD library like we can with our own music CDs?
    Thanks,
    Suzanne

"That's too bad, because these are movies (DVDs) that I own and have purchased legally myself. How is that different from importing your own purchased CDs into iTunes? Seems like a double standard to me."
About "legally owning" the DVDs - Yes, I understand, and I'm figuring that most folks who want to put their DVDs onto their iPod are owning the movies legally (or, at least, it appears so).
That's not really the issue here, though.
The problem is, there is an encryption that is written onto regular, copyrighted DVDs (i.e., movies). In order to get that onto your iPod, you will have to use software on your computer that breaks that encryption, and makes the file into some more "normal" format, like say, MP4.
This action can arguably be considered as illegal, in a sense, since you are removing the encryption that's on DVD, which is protecting it from being easily copied, and transferred around. (which would be illegal).
This is a bit different than CDs, since, although they are copyrighted too, the songs are usually not in a protected format.
If you have a song that you've purchased from the iTunes Store, and you want to break into that "protected" file format, that's the same kind of issue as the DVD ripping.
(Notice that the Hosts included that into the ADUA as well, right along with DVD ripping.)
...It's quite an interesting kind of subject, isn't it?

  • Are the 30Gh and 60Gh Video iPod the same dimension?

I'm wondering if the 30gig and the 60gig video iPods are the same dimensions? I'm looking to buy that Video iPod protective case, and the item's description says: "Fits a 30G iPod" Is there a size difference between the two of them??
    Thank you,
    Andre

"But here’s the kicker: At under half an inch thin, the new 30GB iPod takes up about 45 percent less room than the original iPod. Even the new 60GB model is over 10 percent thinner than the fourth-generation 30GB iPod. More features in less space? Sounds like iPod."
Its a bit thicker than the 30gb.

  • New Video Ipod

I currently have a library in Itunes, which was originally created with my mini ipod. I recently purchase a new ipod (video ipod,30GB).
To update the new ipod with my current library, do I just plug the usb cables and it will automatically update? Hence, I plan to retain the old version of Itunes (V. 6).
Please advise at your earliest convenience.
    Ms. Serious

I agree with the post that you should buy the largest storage you can afford. Content adds up quickly.
I have done a few tests using NERO Recode (which I see is not as popular of a way to squash video as many of the methods on this forum - But I've been using it for a long time and it didn't even need to be updated to make IPod compatable movies. (and easy to crop widescreen movies if I don't want the letterbox or squashed head effect)
Since Nero lets you choose the quality according to how much space you want to squash the video into, I did some tests using a 2 hour (nearly exactly) movie. I tried putting it into 400MB (stunning and flawless on the Ipod screen) 200MB (notably blocky in some action scenes) and 300MB which seems to be a magic medium - barely noticable artifacts and a pretty small file.
I also agree with the post that said to recode movies to the format and put them somewhere else. I can store 15+ 300MB movies on a single DVD and just put the ones I want for a particular road trip ect. into Itunes/Ipod.
I could also keep a slew of movies along with my 30+GB of music on my new 60G. (as soon as I get it fixed - mine had a slight problem upon delivery and keeps rebooting)

  • Playing Video Podcasts on my new Video iPod?

Just got in my new 30 gig. video iPod and spent several hours charging it up and loading all my music, podcasts and video podcasts. However, I haven't been able to watch any video podcasts. It will play the audio but that's it. What am I not doing right or was this just a misunderstanding on my part?
    Thanks.
    Brian

Just figured it out. I was trying to watch the videos under the music section. Once I looked under 'videos' everything was cool.
    Life. is. good.

  • Deleting and syncing videos / iPod software version

    Two questions:
    1) I have videos downloaded through iTunes on my computer and synced on my iPod. They are taking up way too much space on my computer's hard drive, though, and I was wondering if I delete them from my iTunes Library and off my computer, will they remain on my iPod the next time I sync?
    2) I have an outdated version of iPod software. How important is it to have the most current version?

    1) I have videos downloaded through iTunes on my computer and synced on my iPod. They are taking up way too much space on my computer's hard drive, though, and I was wondering if I delete them from my iTunes Library and off my computer, will they remain on my iPod the next time I sync?
No, if you delete from the library and sync then they will be deleted. You could either switch to manual managment of your iPod or you can remove the physical files from your computer while retaining the entries for them in the iTunes library. When you try to sync again iTunes will report that it cannot sync certain files as they cannot be found, but it should leave the previously synced files on your iPod. You can disable the warning if you choose. You will still be able to add new videos onto the iPod by adding them into iTunes, then syncing. You can also remove items you no longer want on the iPod by deleting their library entries. I would stress, however, that this method should be avoided if it results in the iPod containing the only copy of a particular file because the iPod could easily be lost, stolen or need restoring at some point. When (and not if!) you restore your iPod, you will lose all the files on it. For this reason a better appraoch would be to get an external drive to hold data you don't want on your main computer & sync from that.
    2) I have an outdated version of iPod software. How important is it to have the most current version?
Only really matters if there's a new feature or bug fix which affects you. Since Apple don't publish a list of bug fixes it can be hard to tell. Me, I'm all for the latest version but others are more cautious. Horror tales of "the update bricked my iPod" are common enough on here, but you don't generally hear the voices of happier users so I wouldn't worry too much.

  • DVI to Video Adapter and S-Video Cable = Flipping TV Screen

    Hello!
I attached my DVI & S-Video Cable to my television. Everything was fine, except when choosing different display resolutions, the TV screen would start flipping.
    THEN:
    • I removed the DVI to Video Adapter from the computer while it was still plugged into the TV.
Now, no matter what I have tried, I get a TV screen that flips.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!
    Jeff

S-Video is the better of the two interfaces. Neither is very good when compared with a computer screen, which will have much higher resolution. I doubt you will notice much difference between S-Video and RCA Video but if you have the choice you might as well go S-Video.
