Adapter for extended desktop

Hi there, I am new to this forum, so I hope I am asking this in the right place.
I just bought an Intel iMac and have kept my old 17inch studio display monitor (ADC). I would like to have an extended desktop, but I am confused as to what type of adapter I need to buy for this.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'd be tempted to sell the 17" Apple Display on to a PowerMac owner (who no doubt have old graphics cards lying around with ADC connectors on) and use that money towards a new display which can be taken with you to all future Mac purchases.
kind regards

  • Get higher resolutions for extended desktop

We have a new iMac. We also have an older Apple Cinema HD display monitor that we're using with the iMac as an extended desktop. On the iMac, we're using 2560 x 1440 resolution; but the highest resolution we can get on the Cinema HD is only 1280 x 800. Does anyone know how we can get higher resolutions on our Cinema HD display monitor?

I've been looking for a way to have the screen resolution change for different Apps too.  I can't find anything in Automator, but I hope there is a way..  Like you, I like my editing programs to be higher resolution and my finder, email and the rest to have a lower resolution.

  • L10: Using single click for extended desktop

    Hi
I use a Sattelite L10 for presentations. Is there a way to set up the extended desktop with a single click (one! via .exe, .reg , .. file etc)? (A hot key would be nice too)
The problem is, if I start the computer without the external monitor / projector etc connected it reverts back to single display (normal desktop) and I have to Click right, browse to the correct option etc) I want a single button on my desktop / taskbar. (or hotkey)
    Thanks
    JP

    Thanks for the replies.
But it obnly works until you shut down and restart without the external monitor attatched!
Thene you have to right click, properties, choose extended desktop etc again.

  • NB305-106 - Display driver for extended desktop

I would like to know if there is a display driver or any way possible to have "Extended desktop" with my NB305 rather than cloned dual display?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi there,
Yeah thats the first thing I tried. However the extended desktop is not showing as an option, only dual display clone.
The display version was 8-----1972 so updated to the latest driver from Tosh support but still no extended desktop option.
A little frustrating as I have a really old Dell laptop with xp on running two external monitors as extended desktop.

  • Silly Question regarding extended desktop

I have just ordered a new 24" iMac however, the tech specs for the UK note:
+Support for external display in video mirroring mode+
Where as the US tech specs note:
+Support for extended desktop and video mirroring modes+
Which is correct? Does anyone from the UK have their aluminum iMac running in extended desktop mode?
I am upgrading from a white 20" and I have a second monitor as an extended display. I just want to make sure I do not lose this functionality.

All Intel iMac's will do extended desktop mode (by default) when you connect a second display. The next bullet says
"Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display, and up to a 30-inch display (2560 by 1600 pixels) on an external display"
so that basically says it will extend the desktop, since it would not support "full native resolution" up to 2560x1600, if it was simply mirroring the built-in 1920x1200 display.
The new iMacs have a Mini DisplayPort (instead of a mini-DVI port), so you will need a new adapter.

  • Dual Display, 2 Monitors - Extended Desktop

    Hello Everyone:
There isn't a clear cut answer or solution in connected a Macbook Air to 2 external monitors in an attempt to create an extended desktop. I have read older posts that it's either doable or not doable. My questions are the following:
-Is it possible to connect a new Macbook Air to 2 external monitors for extended desktop purposes?
-Some users have reported lag issues (mouse dragging , delays, etc.). Will this happen for sure with a Macbook Air or is it a monitor issue?
-What's the best non-Apple monitor brand that would work best with a Macbook Air for dual display purposes? I've read that Dells have a problem in this regard.
-What would be the advantage or disadvantage of using a dock station in setting up a dual display environment? Would this add to the lag, latency factor?
I'm thinking of investing in a new Macbook Air, but I want to make sure I dont end up with silly issues - such as latency, monitors, etc.
Thank you for all your help and advise.
    Best,
    G.

Yes, extended desktop works with monitors set to differant resoultions. the Monitors pref pane allows you to select relative arrangements and rez of all monitors composing the extended desktop.
    personally I run a dell CRT at 2304 X 1728 @ 60Hz along with an NEC 6FG a 2048 X 1280 @ 60Hz off a radeon 9800pro on an MDD.

  • Extended desktop with 2 LEDTVs and VGA?

    Hi everyone,
I really need some help here.
I have 2 40" Samsung LEDTVs with the model UA40D5003BRXXM. They are docked on the wall side by side. Basically i want to achieve extended desktop (not mirroring) for my mac mini (if can). Assume I open a browser 1 on 1st LEDTV, i can drag that browser to the 2nd LEDTV. So i can see more stuff at 1 time.
However I am not using HDMI or DVI as the cables are too short. Based on my contractors, HDMI cable is max 2 meters. So we got them to work on VGA cables. The mac mini and the LEDTVs are quite far away. The cables are already connected below the flooring and hacked into the wall.
    So few questions:-
    a) how can i connect 2 VGA cables to my mac mini?
    b) can I achieve dual LEDTVs for extended desktop here?
If i can't find a way to do it, then i will have to buy non Mac here i prefer mac if can.
    Any help? Thanks.

I have never personally used one of these DisplayLink adapters myself. According to their Mac software download page, you can have up to 4 of them on a single Mac. See http://www.displaylink.com/support/mac_downloads.php
I could not find specific mention of whether it supports using them as an extended desktop rather than mirroring, but as they support up to four screens (on a Mac) and mirroring only applies to using two, one can deduce this means extended desktop is supported.
Upate: Ok, the user guide does confirm extended desktop support is included, as well as mirroring.
Note: USB does not have enough bandwidth to drive multiple hi-res screens at the same time, DisplayLink gets round this by using the computers GPU to compress the data before sending it to the DisplayLink interface. They do say it supports playing movies. However I personally would expect that you may see some peformance hit and that the low end Mac mini with just an Intel GPU might struggle.
I could not find system requirements for Mac use other than that it currently is not Lion compatible - just spotted a beta version for Lion so you could use it.
If your VGA cable is not solidly embedded in plaster etc. i.e. is reasonably loose, you could consider (after testing the Cat5 HDMI devices) using the VGA cable to pull the new cable through.

  • Cant get extended desktop

    Hello
    I have a dual 1.8 with gefore5200 card.
    I have a new macbook.
I have the mini dvi-dvi connector and a cable to the dvi port on the geforce 5200 card.
I cannot get the arrange selection on the display preferences to appear for extended desktop.
In about this mac - the geforce card is not recognising another display connected and the mirror is turned off.
    Any ideas?
    thanks
    bronwyn

The video port on the MacBook is an output only, not an input. It is there for driving an external display. You can't drive the MacBook's built-in display as a second monitor for your G5. You should not be cabling up two DVI outputs as you have done. Hopefully nothing has been damaged.

  • 15" G4 Extended Desktop

I've been looking around at that Firmware hack that allows for extended desktop on iMac's, but the 15" 700MHz is excluded from the list. Of course, that's the version I bought to use specifically for Keynote presentations. I assumed since it had VGA out it supported extended desktop just like the rest of them. It's got a GeForce2 MX in it, which Nvidia's site says supports dual monitoring.
The warranty on this thing is gone anyway, so I really don't have a problem with messing with the Firmware, I just need any kind of down and dirty trick to allow extended desktop on this iMac.
    Thanks in advance!

AFAIK this can't be done. Sure Nvida's PCI version can dual display but it hasn't had the firmware crippled by Apple.
Screen Spanning Doctor (firmware hack) will allow most iMac G4's to dual-screen but not the 15" 700MHz or 800MHz models.
I present every morning at work (Admittedly it's Office 98 on a WinNT PC so can never be too complex) and never use a dual-screen set-up. You'll have to live with the single-screen setup or get saving for an Intel iMac.

  • Princeton dual display extended desktop

This is my first apple...I have the G5 quad and I hooked up my two Princeton LCD17 monitors, with the adapters. They both have the apple background screen, but only the right monitor has cursor function, the left is just the blue background w/the info screen on the resolution. I've played around with the resolutions...but to no avail. Are the princeton's compatible for extended desktop? Thanks.

    Good evening!
Maybe I can help. Maybe I can't. But I'll try.
    I have a Princeton 19" VL193 lcd here, and a 15" LG 566LM lcd.
When I turn my system on, it automatically goes into extended mode, giving me my normal 19" view with background and menu's and dock.
The 15" shows a blank screen. So I went into the SYSTEM PREFERENCES under the APPLE menu. In there, go into DISPLAY. Each screen should show it's own resolution settings. I can set each screen's resolution and refresh rate, as well as colors, independently of each other.
On the MAIN screen, there is the option to "mirror" the screens, and then they will show identical images etc.
    That's what you SHOULD see.
If now, there is the option to "DETECT DISPLAYS" on the DISPLAY screen.
So they can run seperate backgrounds / wallpapers, or identical.
Let me know if this helps at all.

  • How can i use my old iMac as a extended desktop display for my new iMac?

I recently purchased a 21.5 in iMac and wanted to use my old iMac as a extended desktop. My new iMac has thunderbolt and USB 3.0 connections while my old iMac has firewire (400 and 800), USB 2.0 and mini-DVI. Is this posible?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If your iMac has got Mini-DVI, you have a 17, 20 or 24-inch iMac that doesn't support Target Display. Late 2009 and Mid 2010 27-inch iMacs, and iMacs with Thunderbolt can be used as external displays. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
If your old iMac doesn't support Target Display mode, you can use ScreenRecycler to use your old iMac as an extended display for the new iMac. The only thing you need is that both Macs are connected to the same network

  • Is it possible to assign an extended desktop to be an external desktop for a window's machine?

I have an iMac with Lion and a Windows Vists Laptop and corresponding external monitor on my desk. I'd ideally like to use my iMac as an external monitor for the Window's machine and essentially remove the physical one from my desk.  Make sense?
I already have 4 extended desktops created on my iMac and I'm HOPING that I could assign Desktop 4 (example) as the external monitor to be controlled by the Vista machine. I'd like to be able to flip between my Mac OS and the "extrernal monitor'' via the 2-finger-swipe gesture. Anyone have any ideas?
NOTE: I also have Paralles installed with Windows 7 running on my iMac, but I specifically need the Vista machine to have the external monitor, so please do not suggest this solution.

Thank you!  While reading these directions, I realized that I have the wrong connector.  I have the old Mac Monitor serial port to VGA instead of the MiniDisplay port to VGA needed (didn't even think about this computer not having that port available).  I just bought the correct one from Apple, so I'll attempt these instructions as soon as it arrives.
To confirm: I'll be able to run the iMac as the external display and have Lion open simultaneously, right? (Obviously not both on the screen simultaneously, but the ability to "switch" views) Based on the article, the trick is turning the Target Display on/off with the Command + F2 buttons (as opposed to assigning an extended desktop and using gestures), correct?
Again, thank you for your help!

  • Allow an extended desktop for imac G5 using OS X 10.3

I got a new display for Christmas that I connected to my imac G5 using a mini VGA, which i intend to use as an extended desktop. I went to System preferences and they said if I don't have an extended desktop option, that means my computer can only display a mirror image on the new monitor.
Is there anyway I can modify my imac to treat the new display as an extended desktop instead of just mirroring the image?
