Adapter Fried

My macbook adaptor decided to die today - when I came back to my desk the DC cord was burned through right near the strain relief at the brick end. On checking the apple support site I found the following :
"If the spark comes from somewhere other than the blades of the plug, if you experience charring or melting of the adapter, or if you have other concerns about sparking, contact Apple. Even if your product is out of warranty, you can take your adapter (you don't need to take the computer) to an Apple-Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store for evaluation and replacement if necessary."
So I took the adapter to my local apple authorized service provider who said "yes it's dead, we can order you a new one for $79" ... I asked them about the apple website telling me to bring it in for replacement - they said that there was no replacement program from apple for out of warranty machines as far as they knew. But they would like to know if such a program does exist and they missed out on notification of it.
So are apple replacing these or do they just want us to visit an apple retailer to buy a new one ?

my encounter recently with apple repair center was that they may not know some of these replacement issues.
my experience was, i went to the repair center and they quoted me $200+ for a new battery.
So i shown them the hard copy of the free replacement and they were not sure of this.
So they verified it with the website and checked with the support.
Unless Apple states that the adapter has some faults and it is a free replacement, you can print out the hard copy of that statement and ask the repair center to verify it against the website. But if it isn't, you may have to buy a new one since it is out of warranty.

  • Adapter Fried My MBP

Yesterday my L-shaped adapter toasted my MBP mid-2009 c2d.  It was plugged into the wall, alone, after charging my MBP to full and I went to retrieve as I was streaming video in another room for an hour, not charging.  I brought it to where my computer was on the carpet and plugged it into the outlet -- no sparks.  Then I held the wire near the charging end and as it approached the charger docking station on the computer, BAM! there was a bright arc of current and my computer shut down, leaving a blackened spot on the carpet, the computer, my hand, and the charger.
I read a thread here from '08 on macrumors where someone posted something similar but that's the closest I've found to anything like this happening.  Most people have posts about sparks coming from the outlet when they plug it in but there aren't many people that talk about sparks from the charger.
I've had the charger for a few months as my original charger started to die on me and I bought this one from an Amazon vendor.  It still carries the Apple logo and writing that the other one did on the transformer/adapter but I guess it could be a fraud.
As you can see from the photos (I can't seem to upload any of the images as this computer only shows a pop-up with "Insert Image" text, but I would love to show anyone), there is a horizontal disruption of the aluminum on both the charger and the docking station area where I'm assuming the current arced from the charger into my computer and subsequently fried part of the board before grounding on that screw where the blackened part is.  Now I can't turn on my MBP, although I can charge it.  I'm assuming the board and maybe the processor are fried in there but I am concerned about the HD and RAM.
This is a royal pain as I have several school deadlines..and I'm writing this from a PC..:).  I'd rather drop 1 grand+ on another MBP than on a PC laptop as I do occasional music production and love the interface that OSX has and the touchpad.
Is it possible to still to get the hard drive memory back?  Also, would any one recommend trying to purchase a logic board and see if I could get it to work if I replaced it?  (I'm not too optimistic, plus I don't have much experience doing more in the MBP than replacing RAM and battery)  Finally, wtx! It could have started a fire in the apartment!

Assuming the HD wasn't fried, you should be able to recover the files. When you get your new Mac, pull the drive from the old one and put it in a 2.5 enclosure. You should then be able to read the external drive. In fact, if it still works, you can use it with Migration Assistant to migrate everything to your new Mac.

Plotinus is right though. Start with a trip to the Genius Bar and ask them to diagnose. Maybe you'll get lucky.

Do not dis/connect iPod with the radio on!
I reconnected the iPod with the radio off and then turned radio on. iPod still wouldn't work for me, but the Genius at the Apple Store was able to get it going. He restored the software and advised me to charge it. Now it's working fine. Yea!

  • HP Pavilion Power Adapter Beeping/Not Working

I just made a post earlier tonight about how my HP Pavilion dv7-1014ca Entertainment Notebook was running too hot. Well now I've got bigger problems.
The battery on my laptop has been shot for a while now. My notebook isn't even 2 years old yet and I've gone through3 batteries. For whatever reason, they just aren't lasting. Last year I also had issues with my power jack not working properly. I got it repaired last summer, but in the past two months, it seems as if the issue has returned. Sometimes when I move the chord, the power supply cuts out. Also in the past month or so, my power adapter has been making this annoying beeping noise whenever I plugged it in. It would usually go away if I fiddled with it, but as of right now, I can't get it to stop, short of unplugging the thing. As it stands, the power adapter no longer seems to work, and since my battery is shot, my notebook has turned off. With no battery and no external power source, my laptop is unusable.
So... is the adapter fried? Is my power jack toast again? Seeing as my PC is no longer under warranty, what are my best options for replacement parts/fixes?

    Hello @pxj,
I understand that your notebook's keyboard is not working, and that your alternative keyboard does not function as well. I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
Since your system's available drivers do not contain any keyboard drivers for Windows 7, I recommend obtaining a recovery disc to re-install Windows Vista on your system. This can be done by following this document on Obtaining HP Recovery Discs or an HP USB Recovery Drive.
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, and I look forward to your reply!

  • Biege Desktop G3 and Viewsonic E771 No longer Working Together..Pls Help!

Hello. Please help me if you can. I still love my old G3 and use it for my SCSI scanner when I need to do scanning but over the years I have had to jiggle and prop up the Viewsonic VGA E771 monitor adapter to stay firm in the port in back because, more and more as time has gone by, the screen blacks out with an audible crackle as the green power light turns to amber, popping back on again as I re-position the plug.
As I said, this problem has gotten worse and worse over time, even though I rarely use the machine, and now.... completely not working. What's interesting is that, when the monitor's cord is NOT plugged into the adapter, the green power light of the monitor is on and the video display is working ("No Signal"). I have double-checked the dip switch settings on the adapter and they are correct... they have never changed in all these years so I know they are not the issue.
Is my adapter fried or my video card? How can I test this without another monitor? I do have an iBook and a MacBook Pro, one running Tiger, the other Leopard, whereas the G3 is still on OS 9.
Thanks for your input ahead of time.

the green power light turns to amber, popping back on again as I re-position the plug.
Sounds like mecanical fatigue/failure at the connection.
Support of the components or replacement with new are all that can usually be done when mecanical fatigue is the root problem.

  • No OSX networking after crash, but bridged VM OK???!

I havent investigated much, few hrs, but at a loss of what to try. Not coming up w anything from searches, thought I'd ask...
Went over basics, but I no networking wiz. I cant get networking working on ethernet nor wifi, both worked find before macbook pro siezed w black screen, multi-lingual message.
I've removed my firewall and set manual static ip, same as had worked in past. no luck. no ping to gateway.
Obviously rebooted, power cord unplugged, everything i own/have access to upstream.
I feared my network adapter fried. But it MUST be a driver of cfg since a vmware fusion 4 instance of ubuntu using bridged networking and it uses dhcp works fine..
    differences i see:
    * eth0 dhcp not returning correct. or at least after dhcp release,i get a 169.254.58.30 and i've foudn online a 169.254.*.* is a dhcp failure
nothing in logs when i do a release. no popup error.
    ----- tests:
    ping gateway_ip  -> request timeout
the diagnostic wiz came up short..

Please, any help! No resolution yet.
I have done a few time-machine full system restores and it works fine until I restart or shutdown and later startup...
Networking still works fine in fusion 4 vms, both ubunto and winxp vms.
Networking on host osx laptop says ethernet or airport has the self-assigned ip address of 169.254.whatever and will not be able to connect to the internet. I have this message RIGHT now on my airport, but it still is connected to a pw protected wifi network. my xp vm that i'm typing this in is bridged to the airport. winxp did not ask any wifi pw, it's internet just 'works'...
only thing i can find wrong is that /etc/resolv.conf is a broken symlink. i've tried putting a valid nameserver in the file but no luck.
what can I check??? i dont want to reinstall from scratch. I dont get how networking can be broken. a reboot and redhcp should fix most conf files. That leaves system files trashed??

  • Laptop + charger

This doesn't really involve arch, but my old charger died,so i got myself a replacement from a mate, the funny thing is that i don't think it's charging my battery, just working as an adapter.
    i tried
    acpi -abt
    Battery 0: Unknown, 3%
    Adapter 0: on-line
    Thermal 0: ok, 44.5 degrees C
    Any ideas?
EDIT: Forgot to mention, My laptops input is 19.5v 4.62A, the charger is 19v 3.95A. I've used a 19.5V 3.XX A charger before,it worked. Btw i'm 100% sure that my battery is not dead.

You are better off buying a new adapter for your laptop make and model. Your warranty will get void if you use any unapproved adapters in case your friend's adapter fries your battery or anything else.

  • I will be traveling to Rome and Paris.  I'm concerned about frying my IPad when charging the battery.  Will I need a converter/adapter to charge the battery or do I just need an adapter.

I will be traveling to Rome and Paris and I'm concerned about frying my iPad when charging.  Will I need a converter/adapter when charging or will I just use an adapter?

what RBRY says. Look at the fine print on your power brick. It says 100v-240v. This means it can handle world wattage.....both the us 110 and the UK/and other places 220. Anything that displays that range works anywhere in the world with the right plug adapter.
You can get plug adapters at walgreens, walmart, target, kmart, best buy, office max, office depot.....almost any major retailer. Look in the travel/luggage area.
Do some googling and find out what Italian plugs look like or you can simply find a kit that is a 'world wide' kit.

  • Computer FRIED connecting Video Adapter

    Hi guys,
strangest and worst thing happened today.
When I connected a video cable from my TV to the Video Adapter (miniVGA to Video), my Mac just DIED. Sparks came out, and I think (actually I'm pretty sure) the board was fried, I have no idea why that happened.
It still turns on, but the display doesn't and nothing happens.
Does anyone have any idea what could have happened?? Did I do anything wrong????
    Thanks...

    I feel your pain!
The only thing to try as a last resort is to reset the SMU: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301733 - give it a shot, it probably won't help but a least you tried...

  • Power adapter port frying power adapter?

    sequences of events:
    1) travel with madsonline power adapter, months ago when plugged in, cord is yanked, bent the met ring around the male part of the adapter, pried it back to a sort of circular shape, fits back in adapter port and with proper placement charges machine
    2) after months of using original apple adapter at home, always detected and charges, and the madsonline on the road, with some proper setting into the adapter port will charge, when on the road the machine stopped detecting the power adapter
    3) bought new apple brand power adapter, plugged into port, circle is green but machine did not detect the adapter, no charge
    4) went to local apple sales and repair place (not an apple store) and while there, using another adapter, machine detects and charges (the tech at store heard some sort of short or electrical event when connecting), then I used my new adapter and worked, recall slight short/shock noise, the old madsonline did not show anything.
    5) came home, new adapter plugged in, ring goes orange, goes to full charge, remove the adapter and there is a noise like a short, pluge it back in and the adapter ring has no light, machince does not detect adapter.
Q1) Could it be that the damange to the adapter port killed the madsonline and now killed my new apple adapter?
Q2) Since it appeared an adapter we used at the store also made that electrical noise, may replace the 3 day old apple adapter with a new one but if it just shorts another one I guess it is the DC-in adapter port. Anyone guess that this behavior means a replacement for the adapter port?
Sorry for the long story, looking for some feedback or confirmation if anyone has had this type of behavior.
    thanks
    Craig

    update to story, day 2
    1) went to store where bought the adapter, they tried it on a display model and it worked fine so assumed my port on my machine was bad
    2) get home, power down the machine, plug in the adapter and it works, and is working, charging. I still heard some type of pop when connecting it to the machine so something must not be totally correct.
    3) saw the DT&T service as an option, was going to ship it but will determine if there is a way for me to connect and unconnect the power without losing the ability to charge (i.e. always when powered down?)
    I have reset the PMU.
Any suggestions for attaining more reliable power connection or if anyone has this behavior?
    thanks

I've been using a mini-DVI to video adapter, mostly to watch DVD's since my PS2 broke, for about a month. However, tonight when I tried to set it up, it didn't work.
I plugged in the cable and the adaptor and the only thing that would show up on the screen is my wallpaper-- not my cursor, or the dock, or the icons on the desktop. Just the desktop wallpaper. And nothing else is showing up.
Is the port fried? Or is it the adaptor? Which is more likely/how can I tell/how can I fix it? Thanks in advance!

The desktop background is visible, so it is working, but in extended desktop mode, if you move the mouse or drag a window far enough it will show up on that display.
    options:
-close the lid, when the internal display shuts off the external will become the primary display, do you have an external keyboard/mouse to wake up the computer when the lid is closed?
-Use System Preferences: Displays: Arrangement to drag the white menu bar (and Dock) to the other monitor.
-Also, in System Preferences: Displays, check the Mirror displays to force both the laptop and the external display to show the same thing.
I'm not sure how your settings got changed or what you did before, but it's possible that something reverted to a default setting if you did some software update or something.

  • Minor Problem with MagSafe Power Adapter

I got my MBP almost a year ago now (partially why I'm asking the question) and I've noticed that my power adapter doesn't always show the charge light. Sometimes it is not on at all, and sometimes it is less bright in color (both green and amber).
If I remove it and put it back it usually corrects itself.
It if fully functional; even if the light is completely out and plugged in it still shows as charging.
So, is this normal? I never remember having this sort of problem with my PB G4.

I would think the led light on my adapter cable was broken, but I discovered it works fine on a co-workers MBP. His adapter, which we know works, does NOT work (ie. the led does not come on) when attached to my computer. This indicate to me that the problem, whatever it is, can sometimes be with the computer and not the adapter.
I would be curious if others with apparently dead leds have tried their chargers on other MBPs.
Here's the long version of my story:
My 5W MagSafe completely fried after only 9 months.
The new adapter was fine for several days until this morning.
My "low battery" warning popped up, so so I plugged it in to recharge and immediately noticed the little led on the charger cord did not come on.
I found it hard to believe that I had another bad adapter, so before making the trip back to the store, I went into the studio where there are some other MBP users.
I plugged my adapter into another laptop and the led came on. It appeared to function completely normally. I tried MagSafe adapters from two other MBPs, but the led did not come on on either of them while attached to my computer.
This made me think there was some sort of problem with the connector on the computer itself. Just visually, it appears to be clean and corrosion free.
The next obvious step, it seemed, would have been to try swapping batteries with the other laptops, but mine is a 17" and everyone else here has 15"... and so we have different battery sizes.
One of the people here at the studio had a little utility called "Coconut Battery", that reports information about the battery health. When I ran it on my laptop, I got what I thought were rather surprising results.
It showed the usual things like current charge (21%), battery capacity and so on. But under "Additional Info" it said "Charger connected: Yes" and "Battery is charging: No".
I figured this narrowed it down to a problem with the battery. But as I was showing these results to my co-worker, the "Current Battery Charge" changed from 21 to 22%. Huh? We left it plugged in and it continued to show a steady climb in the charge, as if it is working normally. Except there is no led light, and the software still says it is not charging. Odd.
I then noticed that the built-in battery level indicator on the status bar was also showing the same increases. The led lights on the back of the battery are indicating an increase as well.
Just out of curiosity, I ran a second battery health analyzer program and again got these conflicting results. This one reported the same battery charge and capacity and so on as the previous one. It also recognized that the laptop was running off of AC power, that there was a battery, but it said "Not Chargeable."
So now I am going to let it continue until I have a full charge and then see if the computer will run as usual from the battery.
I don't think the store here is going to give me another adapter since this one appears to work just fine on the other computers.
Any thoughts on why the led would work on other laptops but not mine?
Why the battery health monitors report that the battery is being charged, but also that it is "not chargeable"?
