This sounds like a hardware problem that will likely require a 'hands on' approach. Hopefully there is an Apple Store Genius Bar close-by

  • Power adapter issues using MacBook Pro in European countries?

Are there any known power problems with the new MacBook Pro in European countries such as United Kingdom, France or Italy assuming that I use one of the plug adapters in the "Apple World Travel Adapter Kit"?
Also, is it advisable to provide more protection between the electrical source and the computer than what the computer already handles such as a currency/voltage type converter?
    Adapter Kit: http://store.apple.com/us/product/M8794G/B?fnode=MTY1NDA2Nw&mco=MjE0NjQ4NQ

The MagSafe adapter is designed to work with 110-240 volts so it's fine to use across those countries with the World Adapter Kit (I have one too). The only issue you might come across is earthing, i.e. you could feel a tingle in your palms when using some power supplies due to lack of proper earth connection.
Your alternative is to take your regular power lead and purchase a plug adapter, then you're more likely to get an earth connection and no tingle.
There's no real need for surge protection but it won't hurt.

  • What's the maximum LAN speed with the Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter on my MacBook Pro?

While I was at Yodobashi Camera yesterday, I got a Thunderbolt to Gigabit ethernet adapter for my MacBook Pro. I figure, since I'm paying for the high speed fiber optic (Sony Nuro), why limit my self to wi-fi speeds at home?
Before connecting the adapter, via wi-fi it the speed was 143.8 Mbps down and 181.5 Mbps up.
After connecting the adapter and making a direct LAN connection to the router, the speed is 783.2 Mbps down and 940.1 Mbps up.
I'm certainly happy with the speed, but since Sony Nuro is supposed to be 2 Gbps down and 1 Gbps up I was wondering what the maximum possible is with this computer and adapter. Before asking the provider I was curious what the maximum specs where.
    The ether cable is a 3 m category 6.
    Thanks,
    doug

It's not really your computer that is getting the 2Gbps download - it is the router/ modem.
If you hooked better/ different hardware up you could probably push those speeds around your network too. The trouble is that most residential hardware is gigabit ethernet not fibre. Fibre cards & cable are expensive in comparison.
The existing hardware may allow you to 'bond or aggregate' multiple ethernet connections into one link to get more speed over ethernet. Obviously this requires more complex routers, switches & a network admin to set it up
Those speeds sound nice, this bottleneck will mean that other devices on you network can't choke up the whole connection & make other users sad.

  • Menu Bar issues on Macbook Pro

I came across this problem with my mac where after logging in I noticed that the menu bar, specifically the battery and wifi icon takes atleast 5-10 mins to appear and when I hover the cursor anywhere on the right side of the menu bar it shows the spinning rainbow. Also the volume button seems to be greyed out as well and usually I have to plug in ear phones and it will go away but only temporarily. This never happened to my mac until today and for some reason I think it has to do with the installation of Adobe CS6 Master Collection. (yes, it was torrented. no, I wont do it again.) I did some slight research and on some website it said that there could be some applications recently installed that could have caused this to happen. If anyone has a solution I would very much appreciate it.

Having the same issue. Macbook Pro 2011, latest Mavericks update ....
Apple menu disappears and reappears when Google Chrome is open/closed. Behaving the same with random programs. Do you have any ideas?? Software is up to date, THANKS!!!

  • [SOLVED] Linux kernel 3.6.2-1 issues on Macbook Pro 4,1

After my recent system upgrade to linux-3.6.2-1, I ran into a couple noticeable issues on my laptop.  The first was the inability to use "mount -i /home/user", which is in my .bash_profile, to mount my encrypted home directory at login.  An error message would respond saying that eCryptfs does not support aes.  I was able to manually mount it with "mount -t ecryptfs /home/user/.private /home/user", but could not figure out the issue.  I also noticed my laptop running a hotter that usual and found that my fans were not changing according to the sensors.  I use macfanctld from the AUR to change my fan speed and killing its process and restarting it had no effect.  I then decided my recent system upgrade may be at fault so I rebooted into linux-lts and the issues were solved.  I then downgraded linux-3.6.2-1, linux-headers-3.6.2-1, nvidia-304.51-4, virtualbox-guest-modules- 4.2.0-6, and virtualbox-host-modules-4.2.0-6 to linux-3.5.6-1, linux-headers-3.5.6-1, nvidia-304.51-3, virtualbox-guest-modules-4.2.0-5, and virtualbox-host-modules-4.2.0-5.  These issues are now fixed on my system with the downgrade and I have blocked them from upgrade in pacman.conf.  I did not notice any other issues.

I felt it was necessary to post this issue, especially if another person also has it, so that it may be resolved in future kernel updates.  If there are any logs or other information people need to help resolve this issue or if I should notify a mod of this or something, please let me know.

After further investigation the issues were easily solved.
Regarding my encrypted home directory, I checked kernel.log and found that ecryptfs did not like the argument ecrypt_key_bytes=16 and that manual mount has the variable name ecryptfs_key_bytes=16.  So I simply changed that in my fstab.  Auto-mounting my home directory works nicely again.
In regards to the fan issue, I had to alter /etc/macfanctl.conf because the output of the sensors command (lm-sensors) contained some negative values which may have affected average temperatures and such.  I excluded those temperatures and played with the constraints more until the fans spun faster when I felt they should.
Still found it strange that some of these issues happened during kernel upgrades, but glad to have solved the issues.

  • I am looking for wifi adapter for my MacBook Pro(Mavericks 10.9.2)

i am looking for wifi adapter for my MacBook Pro(Mavericks 10.9.2). Somebody help me to find compatible Wifi adapter for my MacBook.
    Thank you!!

Then you are not looking very well. The first one in the list has compatible wifi adapters. Mavericks compatable wifi adapters are included in most of the results from my link.
If there are not enough results included in the list try modifying my search term. Try this instead:
    https://www.google.com/search?q=usb+wifi+adapter+for+mavericks
    There are dozens/hundreds listed.

Are you saying you're running Windows in BootCamp or Windows as a Virtual Machine? You can increase the fan speed on the Mac using smcFanControl and use the software OGELTHORPE recommended to observe improvements.
smcFanControl is a Mac application and doesn't work in Windows, but if you set a higher minimum fan speed (which is how smcFanControl works) while running OS X, when you reboot into a BootCamp partition, that minimum speed tends to be carried over.

  • MacBook adapter vs. MacBook Pro adapter

Can you use the MacBook and MacBook Pro adapters interchangably? I've heard rumors that it hurts the MacBook if you use the MacBook Pro charger...is that true? If so, what does it do?

You can use the MacBook Pro adapter on a regular MacBook without any worries. It has more capacity than needed by the MacBook, but that's OK. The MacBook just won't draw on the additional capacity (watts).
You can also use a MacBook adapter on a MacBook Pro, however there is not enough juice to run the computer and charge the battery at the same time. The adapter can do one or the other just fine, however. So there's really nothing to worry about there beyond some inconvenience.
This has been the case with past generations of iBook/PowerBook adapters that were interchangeable but with reduced capability in certain scenarios. As long as you understand possible limitations when using a lesser powered adapter to run a laptop with higher requirements, you'll be OK. Now if there was a situation where the lesser powered adapter was not appropriate to run or charge a laptop, then that should be avoided. But so far that has not been the case.
It comes down to how many watts capacity the adapter has, and how many the computer needs to run, charge, or both.

  • Sound Issues with macbook pro 13" and external display

Hey guys I have a 13" macbook pro from mid 2012 with 8 gb ram and the i7 processor. About a year ago I bought a thunderbolt to hdmi adapter and hdmi cable to use my 32 in tv as a monitor. It worked flawlessly and I never experienced the flickering issue people have been talking about. The tv is only 720p so the picture wasn't as clear as it should be. I was also tired of using a pullout desk and thought the 32 in was a little too big so a couple weeks ago I added an entire desk setup in the corner and bought a brand new 24 in Vizio E241i--a1 and mounted it on the wall as a monitor. This tv is the full 1080p. Ever since then, I have had trouble with the sound playing from the macbook>displayport-hdmi adapter>hdmi cable>monitor. I select the monitor as the output device and sometimes it will actually play and sometimes it will not. I mostly use the macbook in clamshell mode when at my desk but sometimes I have both screens on. No matter what if the sound has stopped working it will not go back. If I select the macbook speakers as the output then it will play through the macbook speakers. But once I switch back to the hdmi output for sound it still will not work. The only thing I can do to fix it is to leave the macbook in clamshell mode and then restart it causing the monitor to be the main display at boot up. Once I got the new tv, I also started experiencing the flickering issue people have been talking about with the external monitor. I know it is not because of Mountain Lion because I had Mountain Lion when I used my old setup and never experienced either of these problems. Any ideas on what could be going on? Thanks in advance

Did you format the external drive for use with OS X?
Open Disk Utility. Does Disk utility see the connected drive?
Format it to "Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

  • Issues with MacBook Pro and Asus VW266H

I own a 2.4 GHz 15 inch MacBook Pro,and an Asus VW266H (external monitor) that I wanted to connect to my Mac via VGA,since the DVI is connected to my desktop computer. So I went ahead and purchased Apple's MiniDisplay Port to VGA adapter, and connected my Mac to my display. At first, the Mac didn't recognize the display with its name and would only go up to a resolution of 1920x1080(while the maximum resolution of the display is 1920x1200). I restarted the Mac with the display plugged in,and once the laptop booted up,the resolution was 1920x1200 and the display was recognized, but immediately quite a lot of trembling was noticeable. When the display wasn't detected properly(as an Asus VW266H) this problem wasn't present. I'm guessing that this is a compatibility issue, which by the way wasn't fixed by the latest EFI update by Apple, which improved external display compatibility. Does anyone have any idea if the problem might be something else other than lack of compatibility and/or how to fix it?
I know that neither the adapter nor the VGA cable have a problem since I connected the computer to my 1080p TV and it worked just fine...

    Concerning this comment:

I would like to point out that 1080p has a lower pixel clock than will 1920 x 1200. So it could be the stability problem is only present when the pixel clock is at the high end of the range.
You could return the adapter and try another. A new one might have better margins. Another thing you could try is to use a utility like SwitchResX to lower the pixel clock and see if stability improves.

  • Issues with Macbook pro and siemens gigaset se587

    Hello!
    Wondering if anyone can help me with this issue;
Bought my macbook pro about a year ago as a refurb off the apple site, everything works fine with it up until about a month ago, when the wireless internet kept dropping out and required me to type the passcode back in to gain access (I thought this was wierd as it is supposed to remember this info).
The next stage of this was the router disapeared completely off my airport list, after navigating through the forum pages I found that broadcasting on a different channel usually works, it was on 13 I dropped it down a couple and we had wireless internet once again.
As of recent, my router seems to of randomly reset itself after speaking with TalkTalk we got it back and running... but only on the PC. The element that had changed on the setup was (I may get this wrong) the router was pppoe and not pppoa (im not clued up on wireless networks an lingo, but I hope it provides some insight as to what happend).
The problem now is my macbook can see the router but the passcode (from the bottom of the router) does not work, everytime I type it in I get 'connection timed out' and it only works with a wired connection.
I hope I have provided enough info for you guys to help me out. I will be very appreciative of any insight you can offer.
    Thanks in advance

  • Using Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter to connect Macbook Pro (2009) for a presentation via projector.

When I connect my Macbook Pro (2009 model) using a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter to display a presentation via projector, only the top-left portion of what is displayed on my Macbook Pro's screen is displayed on the projector, as though I zoomed in on that portion of my screen. The projector is on and the adapter and the cable that connects the adapter to the projector machine is correctly connected. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

    Hi glraczon.support,
It sounds like the external display you are using (projector) operates at a smaller resolution than your MacBook Pro. You may want to configure the display preferences in System Preferences for the external projector.
Here is an article that may help you with that process:

  • Where can i buy an thunderbolt to video adapter for my macbook pro i7?, where can i buy an thunderbolt to video adapter for my macbook pro i7?

I recently upgraded my macbook pro 1,1 to a macbook pro i7 i had a dvi-i to video adapter to connect it to the tv.
the new macbook i7 uses thunderbolt to connect, i bought a dvi-d to thunderbolt connection to bridge with the old adapter but this now doesnt work.
is there a thunderbolt to video adapter? or can anyone suggest a proper way to connect the two?

The only Thunderbolt display I'm aware of is Apple's.  However, the Thunderbolt port on your MBP is also a mini-displayport and that is the normal way of connecting an external display to your MBP.  You therefore need a mini-displayport to whatever you need on the TV end, e.g. HDMI.  Apple have a good selection of cables on their online store.

  • Pdf printing issue in macbook pro

    hi everyone,
since i got a macbook pro, i found this problem. it doesn't respond to command-P (printing) at all. i removed and downloaded the newest version of adobe reader, i reset printing system, updated the printer driver,.. i can't print. i use iMac to print pdf. what could i do to fix this? would it be hardware problem or software problem?
    thanks for reading it.

I too have an issue w/ my Macbook Pro keyboard (2nd time since I've owned it) although this one isn't quite as severe as the one reported.
I started noticing over the past couple of weeks that when I type, I start hearing this odd "click" sound every once in a while. As I started to pay more attention to it, it appears that every time I hit the letter 'E', it sounds like the plastic beneath the key is loose or breaking (?). They key itself feels loose and I'm worried that its going to pop off. (this has happened on my Dell Inspiron a few times and its been an annoying issue ever since as it regularly pops off now).
Is this something covered under Applecare? (my previous keyboard issue was a couple of dead keys including the spacebar that required a new keyboard).
Also (side question), when I go to the concierge page to setup a time to visit an Apple Genius, there's GUEST and MEMBER login. Is Member login for those who have Applecare? If so, then what would the member number be? The Applecare agreement # doesn't seem to take.
    Thanks,

  • Issue with MacBook Pro charger?

    Hello,
I bought my MacBook Pro 15" in October 2009. I hardly ever take it out of my place. Senior Apple adviser told me, that the battery in my computer is factory calibrated, so bassically I treat my laptop as iMac. It's connected to the charger all the time. When I'm done using it, I either put it to sleep or shut it down. Two days ago I noticed: (Not Charging) by the icon of the battery. Apparently the charger stopped charging. It's MagSafe charger with T style connector. From what I've been reading in disscussion forum regarding charger issues, it looks like perhaps this charger needs to be replaced.
But the interesting part is, that the green led on the connector holds steady since (Not Charging) appeared two days ago, and also, the battery power dropped only to 94% and holds steady as well.
So this makes me wonder, is there something wrong with the charger, or is it something else?
My computer knowhow is limited, so any information or tip will be appreciated.
    Thanks
