Adapter or battery?

if im using the laptop at home, should i always use the adapter? i know i must run the entire cycle atleast once a month.
but what if i charge it to 100%, discharge it, and then again recharge, discharge. and keep repeating this with no interval between discharge and recharge, will it be harmful.
eg. im gonna use the macbook pro for an entire day non stop. what should i do.
keep the adapter on throughout or do the discharge-recharge cycle the entire day.
thanks.

If you don't need to use the computer on battery power then don't. Although no damage will be caused each time you go through a full charge cycle you reduce the remaining life of the battery. There's no need for that. If you always use the computer on AC power, then re-calibrate the battery every two to three months.

  • W520, 55++, 27++, unplugged from power adapter, 0% battery. Press Power button -- power up loops.

Just faced a rather strange issue, but not really an issue, just different system behaviour than expected.
    System:
    W520
    Batteries:
    55++ connected
    27++ connected
    Power adapter:
    Unplugged
    No other accessories connected.
    Scenario:
I was using the system till it power itself off due to low power (0% reached for both batteries). i.e. Ungraceful Windows shutdown. Then upon pressing the power on button, the LEDs flashes, no THINKPAD logo or BIOS message appears, system appears to then restart again, and the LEDs flash again...and loops until it was no longer able to even attempt to POST.
    Expected behaviour:
Either display the message that says "Battery level is too low".
    Or
Don't loop (this is the behaviour when only the 55++ battery is connected at 0%)
Why does having the 27++ would make the system go through this looping cycle?

    Hello Chatbox,
I can understand your issue very well, as there is no message comes on the screen which gives you information to plug the power adapter and prevent the laptop to get shut down.
You should install Power Manager software and then customize it as per your requirement.
The software can be download from the mentioned below web link.
    http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/8mu417ww.exe
Hope, after this laptop will not shut down automatically due to battery backup

  • IPhone 3G won't charge from car adapter when battery is low

I regularly use my Griffin car charger to charge my iPhone 3G. It seems to work well most of the time.
When my iPhone 3G is very low on battery charge, I discovered that the the iPhone will no longer charge via the car charger. Only way I can recharge the iPhone is via the cable connected directly to my computer or via the wall adapter.
Is this a normal behavior? Very unfortunate if it is since forcing a mobile user to connect to a wall outlet or a computer makes no sense.

Copied from my previous post in this thread.
I know if the iPhone's internal temperature if over a designated temp, you can't charge the battery until the internal temp has been reduced. This is protection for the battery and internal components since charging increases the internal temp.
When this occurs, the charging indicator will switch to showing as being fully charged.
    Are you using a case?
Charging increases the internal temp of the iPhone, and using GPS will also increase the internal temp of the iPhone. Combined must have increased the internal temp of your iPhone past the designated temp when charging stops. Using a case can prevent heat from being dissipated properly.

  • New power adapter and battery, still not working?!

A couple days ago, my macbook stopped charging. The power adapter was plugged in, but there was no indication that it recognized it or was charging, so I figured it was a broken power adapter. I bought a new one, plugged it in, everything was fine - until the next day. The new power adapter stopped working as well. So, I go to the genius bar, and they tell me it's my battery. I buy a new battery and plug in the new charger. Everything's working again, until I unplug the power adapter to move my laptop into another room - and now it's not charging again! I tried every power outlet, and something is definitely wrong with the macbook itself. I'm pretty frustrated since I've now spent $200 on new stuff and the problem still isn't resolved.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

  • Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet adapter drops battery life by 50%

    Hello,
as the title states, the battery life of my MacBook Air 2013 goes from 15h to 8h when using the adaper. Is this normal? Will the same also happen with the USB Ethernet adapter?

I have the same conclusion. But when I tried both wifi add +1 hour to my battery life according to battery health app. Which is really weird. But when I plug the adapter back in, it takes that extra time off.
    e.g.
    Wifi = 6.50 hours
    TGEA = 5.04 hours
Here's the watts usage after 1 minute of use:
    Wifi ~ 9.34 Watts
    TGEA ~ 12.31 Watts
I bought TGEA to lessen the battery usage in the first place.

  • Had Power Adapter replaced, battery icon not showing charge

Hello, hoping you guys can help me out. Recently, my power adapter had burned out (wouldn't show charge/light up at all). I've had it replaced as of today and is working fine (Whoo!), but now a new problem's come up.
I admit I used my battery to it's limit while waiting for the new adapter, and while the light on the adapter is green, the battery icon on my screen is showing 0%. Pressing the button on the battery only gives me one green light.
I've heard something about Re-Calibrating the battery in my manual, but I'm unsure if that's the best course for my case. Here's my Power System Profile, if it helps:

Re-calibrating the battery is typically done with a new battery, where you charge it all the way up, then run it all the way down a couple of times. This calibrates the battery's internal electronics to the actual capacity of the battery. Not a concern here.
Looking at your battery stats, is your battery fairly new? It is showing 56 charge/discharge cycles, does that sound about right? Reason for asking is, if the battery is old, like maybe the original battery that came with the system, sometimes a dying lithium battery throws up screwy stats. If it is an older battery, that may be why it's not charging ... it's dead. However, if it is a newer battery ....
There's only 4 components to the charging circuit - power adapter, dc-in card, battery, and logic board. You have a new power adapter, and the system is seeing the 65 watt power adapter, so the power adapter and dc-in card appear to be OK. That leaves either a battery issue or a logic board issue. Do you have another battery you can swap in, or a friend with the same model PowerBook, or an Apple store nearby? If you swap another battery in, and it starts charging, and the current batter is an older one, then replace the battery. I used this one on mine, and others have had good things to say about it: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/powerbook/battery/g4-15inch-aluminum/ . I would stay away from batteries sold on ebay, as there have been a number of people very disappointed with the lack of quality in the battery they bought.
If another battery won't charge, that would point to a logic board issue. We just had that on one of our PowerBooks, where it would charge, and it wasn't a power adapter, dc-in, or battery problem. The Apple store sent it off to the Apple Depot, for around $350, and they replaced the logic board as well as the battery. If they do more work, like replacing a dented case, the price goes up. If the Apple store replaces the logic board in the store, it costs around $750 or more.

  • Using ac power adapter vs. battery on MacBook Pro

I purchased a 15 inch MacBook Pro with retina display a couple months ago.  Most of the time I use it with the ac power adapter.  Is there any harm to the battery life if I never left the battery drain down some and then recharge it? I have come to understand that when the battery is fully charged and plugged in to an outlet the battery is basically on standby.
    Thanks

If you use it mostly on AC, then once every one or two months you should use it on the battery until the battery runs down to about 20%. Then reconnect the AC so the battery can recharge.

  • How to identify 45 watt vs. 65 watt adapter?  (Battery Updater not working)

I have read that it's better to use the original 65 watt adapter, not the 45 watt, to charge my PowerBook G4. Can you tell me how to tell which one I have? The wattage is not listed on the adapter anywhere.
My real issue is that I run the PowerBook G4 Battery Updater and I get the message "You must have a 65W power adapter plugged into a working power source during the update process." I am plugged in using what I think is the adapter that came with it, but it does not complete the update.
    Thanks!

You can calculate the wattage from the information on the power supply. Look for the output voltage (i.e. 24.5v) and current (i.e. 2.65A) and multiply to get 64.925 watts.
Be aware I think there have been reports of 65W adapters erroneously showing in System Profiler as 45W adapters. I don't recall if the adapters were mislabeled or what.

  • Endless Switching between Adapter and Battery/Not Charging

My battery is from fall of 2007 (I received it during the recall.)
The little battery icon on the top of the screen is endlessly flickering between the charging symbol and an almost dead battery symbol. If I open energy saver, it tells me that the computer is switching back and forth between the two power sources: my Power Adapter, and my battery, with my battery perpetually stuck at 1%. This seems to me to be more than just the battery not charging, but since my computer is indeed running off of the adapter, I wanted to see if perhaps this was just its way of telling me the battery is no longer charging. Also, any advice on getting the battery to hold something, at least for a little longer (my new job gives me a computer in August, so I'm just trying to stretch this one as much as possible.)
    Thanks in advance!

    BUMP -
I'm having a similar problem. Will keep scanning the older posts on this board, but:
I just replaced a lost MacAlly G4 Adapter with a new one (MacAlly). It charges the Powerbook when I leave the computer shut-down (so I'm not screwed ...), but when powered-up with the adapter plugged into the G4, the battery symbol alternates between the charging symbol & the battery status symbol - and slowly drains. The screen also dims & brightens.

  • HP Zbook15 not charging battery; AC adapter works, Battery works bu not charging

Window 7 OS. Zbook battery wont charge. I checked it via HP battery health check and it show OK, Discharging, capacity 91%. Battery health check could came back that AC adapter not present, however it was plugged in and power the the computer. The AC adpter works and powers computer. But when battery is installed the plugged in icon does not show. The plgged in icon only shows when battery is removed. This is NOT a failed battery or failed AC Adapter problem. Both check out completely by exchange with another same model laptop. How can I get my computer to recharge the battery?

  • Quick Question -- only adapter, no battery

All, Thanks again for your information. I just have a curious question this time. Will the MacBook Pro run on only an adapter? My battery ran out today and the computer turned off. I said no problem, and plugged it in. But it still wouldn't turn on. I had to wait till the battery was a little charged before it woke. Then after it turned on, it slept again after the battery drained while plugged in. Will it work on only adapter power?
    thanks.

    Hi usafitz
It sounds like your adapter is not working properly. My laptop will turn back on as soon as I put the adapter in and it will charge while plugged in. It will also run fine on just only the adapter without the battery installed, but keep in mind that the power adapter can be pulled out easily.
What is the rating on your power adapter? The MacBook Pros come with an 85W power adapter.
    Hope this helps

  • T410s, 135 watt adapter + ultrabay battery.. Decreased charging times?

I am running the regular 6 cell, and also a 3 cell ultrabay.
    I have discrete GPU.
Will the charging times decrease if I use a 135 watt charger, and ifso, under which (or 2/3) of the following scenarios)?
    1) Drained batteries and using the computer at full performance
    2) Drained batteries, computer is off.
    3) Drained batteries, 4338-10u mini dock plus, 2 monitors external monitors, computer at full performance
    Thanks!

    I don't think so.
The reason being is that the battery can only charge at a certain rate- or else it will overheat and explode (probably a bad thing).
What's the time it takes for your batteries (the 6-cell and the 3-cell) to fully charge when the computer is at idle? (Or off?)
We can assume that you're not using more than 49 watts at any time (the CPU's rated for 35W maximum power and the GPU eats 14W) at full performance (such as running an application such as Folding@Home or a standard stresstest)
So depending on how fast the battery charges when you're not using any power (or little enough to have no effect on charge rates) we can figure out if it will charge faster with a 90 W or 135 W adapter since we can see if the battery, at fastest charging rate, will overstep the power output.
