  • DVI to ADC Adapter Overheating

My DVI to ADC Adapter overheats when I plug in a 22" Apple Cinema Display M8058. I've used this adapter with my powerbook and after about 30 minutes or so it is hot enough to cook an egg on the apple and it shuts down and the display goes dead. The same happens with my G5. Once it's cool it fires up. It works ok on a smaller ADC display without shutdown. I can't find anywhere where overheating is an issue and wonder if this adapter is a fire hazzard or I got one that's gone bad ? Anyone else have this problem?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Yes , that's true , my Adapter is overheating too , but I have Drop-Outs at the resolution 1600x1024 ono my Cinema Display 22". I think it's a case of warranty.

  • Why does the adapter/recharger plug get so hot?

When we recharge the iPad2, the adapter plug gets very hot, even if the iPad is turned off. I always plug it into a surge protector, but it concerns me...
    is this normal?

Yes, it is perfectly normal for power adapters (including the iPad included 10W adapter) to get considerably warm
(to the point where you would not want to hold your hand on it for an extended period of time). I've had my fair share of power adapters over the years, and it seems the lower-end PC ones tend to get extremely hot (where you would not want to hold them in your hand for an extended period of time), but never to the point where it would be unbearable to hold in my hand.
If, indeed, it is too hot to hold or touch, then please make sure it has proper ventilation. Make sure it is not covered by a blanket or sheet, make sure it is not in a cramped corner, etc. If the overheating issue continues, assuming your device is under warranty, take the power adapter to Apple.
As far as this being a concern about like burning down your house, it will certainly not get to that point. More than likely, the worst that could happen is the power adapter overheats and dies, but please again check to make sure the power adapter is plugged in right, and has proper ventilation . . . two very important things.

  • How to fix iPad sudden shut down, reboot loop?

    Dear all,
I have an ipad 3 bought six months ago, lately in the past 2 weeks, i have noticed clearly when i try to open google earth application (or some other apps) but mostly testing it with google earth, the app suddenly freezes for less than a second screen goes black then flashes white and black screen for few seconds then reboots to the apple logo, then black screen again then apple logo again and then the iPad starts normally! Also i have noticed, when charged in a wall, the adapter overheats and when ipad is in use, heating is noticed on the bottom left side of the device.
i've researched the net seen many results but nothing came successful to my device, i have tried, restoring, reseting, restoring from back up, entering recovery mode all that and nothing came successful!
I am somehow sensing a hardware problem.
Whoever wants to help, I kindly ask you to give an answer that is logical and please do not repeat any steps that i have mentioned above. please cooperate in a logical mature way.
    Thank you

If anyone has faced this issue and was able to fix it, I am hoping from you to share your fix.
If no fix is there, so i can take it to be fixed since it is not under warranty, and wehre i live it will cost a lot for fixing

  • My MacBook Pro overheats when connected to Thunderbolt Display

I've had these since August 30 of this year.  I switch to Mac and brough home two Pro's and two Thunderbolts.  They have been doing fine, not a problem yet.  Until Friday, when mine started overheating.  My MacBook Pro Retina runs fine on it's own.  But I came home, plugged it into the Thunderbolt, and immediately it started overheating.  It did the same thing, when I woke up Saturday it was so hot, I could not pick it up with my hands.  I found another thread with similar problems, but it was four pages of "I have this problem, too".  It's not sitting on a desk, it's in the stand sold by Apple, and I"ve had it plugged up to the Thunderbolt 80% of the time since we bought it, but never had a problem until five days ago.  Clamshell mode in a stand with wireless Keyboard and Track Pad, all the newest releases of Pro Retina and Thunderbolt. All the updates, everything.  Any ideas?

Connecting an external monitor/display turns on the high-performance graphics adapter which can generate significant heat.  The base-plate can get pretty hot (Apple states this and for this reason says to not use the MacBook Pro on your lap.  They don't even refer to them as laptops.).  Just make sure that nothing is blocking the cooling ports under the display hinge.  If the MacBook Pro actually overheats, it will shut down.  So, don't worry yet.

  • HP ENVY m6 Notebook PC overheats several times per day

My laptop overheats and crashes CONSTANTLY—several times per day!  I have vacuumed all of the vents in back, I took it to the Geek Squad, who sold me a chill pad that helps minimally, I have started putting ice packs on the lower left corner, I don't take it outside, anymore.  There is nothing that keeps this laptop cool enough for me to use like a laptop and take it where I need it.  It started doing this about 6 months ago.
It's sitting on the chill pad right now, getting hotter and hotter (everywhere to the left of the letter i).  Also, the adapter gets so hot, it makes me think it might be a fire hazard.  It seems to overheat slower when it runs off the battery, which seems to be the only thing that doesn't get hot.
What do I do about this?  I don't want to get another laptop; this one is only a year and a half old.

It likely needs to be opened up and cleaned out around the processor/heatsink and new thermal compound applied. I am understanding that the battery does not heat up? What if you let it run down and then recharge it with the laptop on? Does the battery get hot during that process? It does not heat up as much on battery power because the processor has been "throttled back" to save battery life so that tells us the heat is likely coming from the processor. You can set the processor to run at 97 or 98% power even when plugged in and this helps a lot but should not be seen as a permanent fix. Go into power options in Control Panel and get to advanced.
Set maximum processor state plugged in to 98% and see if that does not help.

  • Question about X-series with the bundled 65W adapter, gets very hot

    Hi all,
My company purchased many X230 notebook in last year.
some are standard configuration (i3 CPU) and some are (i5 CPU).
The i3 seems to have no problem.
However, the i5 model had some issue that it can't full run all the 4-core in high load when connecting the bundled 65W AC adapter, and the adapter got hot. After investigation, we change to 90W AC adapter and the problem is gone. All the 4-core runs correctly and the 90W AC adapter is cool.
The reseller said that the 65W should be factory package and they will not provide any warranty if we use it incorrectly with the 90W adapter (but the lenovo homepage says the adapter supports....).
Now, we are considering the X230i model with the same upgrade to i5 CPU.
Can someone provide feedback if using the X230 / X230i + i5 CPU normally with 65W AC adapter?
    Regards,
         Donald

Could this be the same or related issue?
I have a T430s with integrated graphics and dual core i5 CPU. According to Lenovo sales literature this system will work with a 65W AC adapter. Also when I ordered the system online from Lenovo's site I was also given the option to select either a 65W or 90W adapter.
At the office I use a 90W adapter. The system idles at under 40°C with the fan usually not spinning or spinning at slowest setting (according to TPFanControl) even when the system is under load. It may get as hot as 50°C when the system is under heavy load. But I've never seen it overheat or had the fan spin continuously at maximum speed, etc.
When travelling I use a 65W adapter in order to minimize size and weight. In that situation the fan is always running and temperatures are usually in the 50°C to 60°C range. On more than one occasion system temperature has "run away" getting increasingly hotter, going to 80°C or 90°C.
In one case the system shut itself down. I let it cool down overnight. When I rebooted I got a fan error. After that incident I sent the T430s to Lenovo for repair. The technicians found nothing wrong. From their report it's not clear if they replaced the fan or not. Nevertheless this "run away" temperature situation has recurred since then.
From reading posts on this thread and based on my experiences with the T430s it seems to me that the 65W adapter doesn't have enough power for even a basic T430s despite what Lenovo's marketing literature may say.
I wonder if the same conclusion doesn't also apply to your systems? Do your temperature issues go away when your system runs on a 90W adapter?

  • [T430s] Small ripple on external monitor when power adapter plugged in

If I unplug adapter, external monitor picture is fine. But if it is plugged in, I can see small ripples on the screen.
    How can I fix it?
    Thank you.

Yes, the charging stops but the battery goes into a state that never discharges, which interferes with its life. This is what the Apple support said. Actually several of them confirmed that having it plugged in all the times will affect the battery life. They said to unplug it and let it discharge completely once a week to allow a full cycle to cycle to occur.
As you can tell, there is mixed information. They say one thing in an article and another on the phone. There is also a lot of opinion. The complete understanding will happen only when time passes with the computer constantly plugged in.
I speak from experience of having my older Macbook Pro plugged in for 7 years. I got the same story from Apple (battery stops charging - no harm done) Right. The battery overheats, it bulges, it presses on the chips inside and the mac goes crazy. Also the battery life goes down to only about 20 minutes after a year of  being plugged in. This new Macbook Pro may have a better battery technology and electronics but they were saying the same thing back than. The difference was that with the old Macbook Pro my battery replacement cost me $60 and it took me 10 seconds to exchange it. This time battery replacement will cost me $200 and will have to part with the computer for 4 days to have it replaced. And how often will I have to do that? I guess I will follow up on this discussion in a year to let you know the outcome.
I hope I was clear in expressing my concern.

  • Power adapter sparks

I just received email notice of the class action settlement on the MagSafe adapter for MAcBook Pro. I have a Samsung adapter - it sparks and overheats, just as the one in the recall, but I don't htink it's same one. How can I find if If I can get mine replaced?

Apple only supplies Apple adapters. If yours doesn't bear Apple's name, it isn't the original adapter that came with your computer.

  • Power Adapter fails

I have one of the powerchords HP wants to replace because there is a risk of it melting or catch a fire. I have had an issue with my whole adapter since this summer, the first time it overheated big time and didnt charge my laptop anymore, after a cooldown period of an hour it started working again but now it completely stopped functioning. When i called the Dutch helpdesk i was told that the powerchord has nothing to do with my dead adapter and since i purchased too long ago i had no more rights and would have to purchase a new adapter. Funny thing is, the first time i called an employee, she said HP would probarbly replace the adapter too, but i didnt have my serial number presence and she couldnt help me that time. Next time i called , i was told i had to purchase a new one.
I would like an explanation why an adapter that died because of overheating is not dead because of a powerchord that might overheat or melt.

    thanks for your quick reply.
Yes, it is the original charger that is dead. (sorry for calling it adapter, dutch word  for it, sounded english )
I did call the dutch helpdesk 3 times , first time i didnt have the serial number, second time the connection was ended when i said i wasnt pleased with the answer and  the last time they said HP procedures said : powerchord recall has nothing to do with your  dead charger. Never did any of the employees suggest to escalate it. I dont really feel like calling again.

  • Charge overheats if Google Map is used while the phone is being charged.

    I've encountered a strange problem:
The Charge does NOT overheat when using Google Maps on battery power.
The Charge does NOT overheat when being charged(either via AC adapter at home or DC adapter in car),
    if Google Maps isn't open.
When Google Maps is open(GPS on)  and the Charge is being charged, then the phone overheats and
shuts itself off after a warning message appears.
Verizon replaced the battery 3 times with brand new Samsung batteries.  The phone was hard reset each time.
I ended up trying it on the Verizon corporate store's Charge on display. Turns out that the problem can be
reproduced in store....   Does anyone else have this problem?

I don't know why this problem has been marked "Solved".  It is not solved.
I have the same problem when using Google Navigation in the Samsung car dock and the car charger.  I started off with a fully charged battery because posts on other sites have complained that the Charge cannot keep up with the power draw of the Google nav app while using the car charger.  About an hour into my trip, I got a message that the battery was overheating and to unplug the charger which I did.  I then had to contend with the screen going out because it was running on the battery.
I let the phone discharge to about 70% then tried the car charger again.  Within a few minutes, I got the same overheating message.  It was not an overly hot day and the car A/C was set at 68 degrees.  THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.  I love this phone, but in the 3 days I've owned it, I've had one issue after another.  Dropped Audio to other Verizon customers.  Camera flash causing the phone to reboot.  And now this issue.   I hate to return it, but I'm running out of time.

  • Charging Macbook with Macbook Air's power adapter

I have noticed that the power connector on the late 2008 aluminum Macbook accepts the Macbook Air's power adapter's plug. The Macbook Air's power connector also accepts the aluminum Macbook's power adapter's connector. So, can these power adapters be used interchangeably? The output power specifications are a little different. The Macbook Air's power adapter supplies voltage that is a bit lower than the aluminum Macbook's.
The reason I am asking is that if my wife and I both travel with our laptops (she has Macbook Air and I have the new Macbook), it would be nice to be able to bring only one power adapter and use it with both laptops. I have also noticed that the airplane power adapter shipping with the aluminum Macbook (late 2008) is the same one that I bought for my wife's Macbook Air. However, according to Apple, the airline power adapter does not charge the battery, but only powers the laptop.

It is safe to use your macbook power adapter on the macbook air, but not the otherway around. The macbook air power adapter won't supply enough power to the macbook and probably will overheat and eventually burn out (if not worse).

  • WRT400N and AE1200 - Overheats

Products overheat every 10 minutes. What is the point of N devices that can't handle that throughput?
My WRT400N also overheats and resets itself occasionally, though less frequently than the USB stick.

If the device overheats then the device could not be functioning well. For the router, you can try to reset, power cycle then reconfigure the router's settings. For the wireless adapter you can try to uninstall and reinstall the drivers then try to observe. If you still experience the same problem then you might need to verify this concern from tech support.

  • Replaced battery/Got shocked/Adapters Overheat/All PBs

I've been told to start a new topic in this section, even though it seems to be relevant to all PowerBook models - I'm on a 12" PB.
I am hoping that by comparing experiences, we can get more information about what is actually going on, and what we have to do to fix it.
I have recently become aware of a mild buzzing-type sensation that I associate with electricity when using my PowerBook while plugged in.
I was alerted to this problem after being shocked, and not lightly, in a situation where other causes would be freak occurrences.
This incident led to me becoming aware of my overheating power adapter, which does not appear to be in the adapter itself, however, because plugging my computer into an otherwise fine adapter also causes that adapter to overheat.
One possible factor in either or both of these problems might be battery replacement. (My replacement battery from the recall is just within the ill-fitting limits to deny re-replacement.)
[Poll removed - polls are against TOU]
if you have had these problems and actually figured out what was wrong - what did you do to fix these issues?
    PowerBook G4 12" Mac OS X (10.4.9)

When I noticed this problem, my first steps were to try different outlets with and without the grounding plug, with and without a surge protector and in different houses.
    I reset my PMU.
I queried myself as to what software I had recently installed which could have affected my hardware functioning.
I would have noticed, and replaced my adapter rather than be concerned about it, had the cord been frayed, but this has not been a problem for me.
I'm sorry to have been confused by the term "discussions", in assuming that this was a place where people could talk about the problems they are having, and work together to find solutions.
