Adapter to add SSD to T420s ultrabay

I want to add a 128-180 GB SSD to my T420s ultrabay, but I'm having trouble confirming compatibility of the various options.  Is 43N3412  the right SATA adapter?  I'm planning on using it with 0A65630 "ThinkPad 180GB SATA 6.0Gb/s 7mm Solid State Drive" (unless someone has a suggestion for a better price/value option).
Solved!
Go to Solution.

There are two versions of the Ultrabay adapter, one 9.5mm thick (43N3412) and the other 12.7mm thick (0A65623.)
I don't know for sure about the T420s but I suspect it has a 9.5mm opening like my T430s. I bought this clone adapter on eBay for about $10, shipping included. It fits perfectly and works just fine.
In my case I put the SSD into the standard HDD bay and put the HDD that originally came with the T430s into the adapter. That way when I'm travelling I can easily pull out the HDD in the adapter so that it's not vulnerable to physical shocks, etc.

  • Add SSD to DV7 (LC748EA#ACB)

    Hello!
    I want to add SSD OCZ Vector 150 to my notebook as a disk with Windows.
    I clone Win to this SSD and set it to my notebook as a disk 1.
    But I can't select my new ssd in BIOS as bootable disk.
    BIOS version HP F1.B
    Please help me)

    What did you use to clone the disks? And to be clear, you now have the SSD in the primary slot and the hdd in the second slot? Try removing the HDD completely and see if it will boot just off the SSD. The HDD should not be in the boot order if it is in the second bay.
    The SSD is a full sized 2.5 inch SATA form factor, not an mSATA mSSD, right?

  • Is the T420s ultrabay compatible with the seagate momentus XT 750gb hard drive?

    Hello,
    I have a T420s with a 160gb SSD. last friday i got the BAD_CTX error for the SSD drive and lost all of my data. i called lenovo support (still under warrenty) and they told me the drive was fine. i was shocked! never the less, i found a way to get the drive to work again, but this "fix" will delete all the data on the drive.
    i want to use the ultrabay to add a new HDD to backup my SSD on and would like to know if the these three products are compatible.
    T420s using the ultrabay with a seagate momentus XT 750gb hard drive?
    Thanks in advance for your help...

    I'm 99.9% certain that the answer is yes. I have a 500GB HDD in my UltraBay with no problems.

  • T420s ultrabay or external HDD

    Hello everyone!
    I'm thinking of increasing my T420s HDD capacity since 128GB SSD is not enough for me anymore. I have two options:
    1) to buy an external HDD with usb 3.0 (e.g. WD my passport ultra)
    2) to buy a ultrabay chassis and 2,5" HDD inside
    The question is: which solution will be faster in terms of reading/writing files and managing backups?
    My model is T420s 4171-7FU.
    Thanks in advance for any advice
    Best regards,

    Hi,
    If you haven't installed a WWAN card in the WWAN/mSATA slot, an mSATA SSD might be a 3rd option.
    My own preference is a 256GB mSATA SSD + a large-ish HDD for data in the main drive bay.
    I think the "s" has the slots to do that...

  • T510/520 Drive Bay Adapter III and SSD compatibility

    Hi,
    I would like to use a Drive Bay Adapter III with some SSD as second drive on my T510 and T520 (I would switch it between those two laptops, use it to transfer data and so on). Are there any compatibility issues out there? Should I avoid certain SSD controllers or is it perfectly the same if I go for Sandforce or Marvell or any other?
    Thank you.
    Solved!

    Hello flashheart:
    The Drive Bay Adapter III or Ultrabay adaptor (#0A65623) would replace the optical drive, which you probably are already aware of. There should not be any compatibility issues with either of those controllers but I have read many instances in the forum that the Sandforce controller is probably the fastest.
    Some more information on the adapter:

  • T420s Ultrabay Loose?

    I just got my new T420s laptop a few hours ago and stuck 8GB of RAM and an Intel 320 series SSD into there.  I've been more or less happy with it except for one thing...
    The Ultrabay slot seems to be quite a bit larger than the actual Ultrabay devices on my laptop.  (I have both the optical drive and an Ultrabay battery to test with)  You can clearly wiggle around the Ultrabay devices quite a bit when installed and when the optical drive is reading a disc it is quite loud due to the vibration of the drive clanking about in that Ultrabay.
    It's almost as if I am missing some 1-2mm spacer that I need to wedge into there to fill up that extra space.  Has anyone else noticed this on their T420s?  It is quite annoying to me...
    Here's a picture I took of it, hard to see from just a picture though...I'll see if I can upload a video of it sometime.

    " about 15 layers of duct tape mainly on the top & bottom of it so it isn't rattling around in there....worked like a charm..."
    QUOTE    Yangorang.
    Duct tape does not "age well", so what you will end up with will be a soft & sticky layerd mat around it's edge
    which when after having dried-out will become a powder of sorts. This resulting mess will infiltrate you computer
    just at the time the warranty expires. (LOL) Even small cork pads, or mounting tape will deteriorate over time by
    "chunking-out", with the resulting residue - something that again you don't ever want. The only "correction", and I
    mention that term as in passing, is to apply two small doubs of silicone sealant to the top part of the battery/ultra-
    bay HD adaptor where foregoing last enters the slot.  You will be able to guage it's required thickness by the use
     of a measuring shim before the sealant application. Cured silicone sealant can be cut with a sharp razor knife
    or removed with vinegar, while duct tape gunk will be disolved by lighter fluid. How the two foregoing affect the
    substrate remains an open question.
    Doing any of the above to my own machine, this is a non event.

  • Add SSD and running OS from it in an HP Desktop

    Is it possible to add an SSD to HP 700-070d P/N: H5Y85AA Desktop and moving the OS to that SSD?
    Prompt reply would be much appreciated.

    Hi,
    Yes, you can clone your current HDD to your new SSD, install new SSD on your machine and run from there. Please note:
    (a) SSD normally smaller (2.5" vs 3.5") therefore you need a mouting kit for it, such as one of the following ones:
          http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_nkw=2.5%22+TO+3.5%22+MOUNTING+ADAPTER+BRACKET+SSD&_sac=1
    (b) When cloning, you MAY need to select only the OS drive, otherwise it won't fit UNLESS you have larger (capacity) SSD. There are many free software around
      http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/five-apps/five-free-and-reliable-cloning-tools/
    and you can also get a cloning kit from vendor for around $10-$15.

  • Lenovo T420 and T420s Ultrabay

    Im curious if anybody can help me with this question.
    Will the Ultrabay slot in the t420 and t420s support Sata 3 drives?
    Im thinking of purchasing one of these laptops and wanted to replace the optical drive with an OCZ Vertex 3 SSD for my operating system.

    What you like for screen is certainly individual but I have had it with a Hi Res glossy glass covered screens like the IPAD and the MB Pro.
    I try and watch movies on my monthly cross country flights on my IPAD and all I can see is myself.  Even MBP now has an option for a matte screen.  Yes, a lot of people like that glary screen because it oversaturates colors, but that doesn't work for me.
    Even when I look at photos I prefer true colors as opposed to oversaturated.

  • Need USB / SATA adapter converter for SSD thnsn2128gsps

    Hi,
    I have an ssd from a broken macbook air thnsn2128gsps,
    Is there a converter available to either normal SATA interface or USB 2/3?
    I understand these ssd's use 3.3v and the normal SATA is 5V so a voltage change is needed.
    I just want to connect it to a PC (Got the software to read macdisks) to get the data off the drive.
    Thanks in advance.

    Don't get me started on Macs and non standard interfaces.
    I have found what looks like what we are both looking for, although the price is on the high side for the usb version. Also I have not yet found a UK supplier.

  • HOW TO ADD SSD to MacBook

    I read in numerous forums and never came up with a real answer if it is possible to add a SSD (solid state drive) drive to your MacBook.
    My test model was a new aluminum MacBook 2.4 already updated to 4 gigs from OWC for $80 delivered. (which I might say has worked flawless for over 7 weeks now)
    To start I had to determine what type of drive I had and what type I needed.
    The various types in the macbook appear to be PSATA, SATA, and SATA II.
    My macbook uses SATA, however SATA II is backward capable and works fine in 10.6.
    I then shopped for a SSD and found a 120 gb drive which is actually a 128 with 120 usable for only $199 shipped from NewEgg.
    The model I use is this link
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227361&nmmc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel&cm_mmc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel-_-Content-_-text--
    (OCZ SATA-II 2.5" 9.3 mm thick. Core Series V2 120GB (actual usable)
    model OCZSSD2-2C120G
    bar product code 42024-00982
    I paid 199 shipped and the price rises and falls on demand.
    After 3 days the drive arrived and I then called my local Mac Genius, who has worked for Apple for over 20 years on instructions on how to make everything work.
    I connected the bare drive to my computer via a standard mini usb to usb cable.
    This drive also has a mini built in usb connector on it.
    The drive instantly showed up on the desktop.
    Next I opened Apple Disk Utility and highlighted the drive (upper not lower ID)
    I then under the partition set it for 1 partition and also set it for "Guid partition table"
    This step is important as the PC environment need to see it under this
    I set the type of formatting as "Mac os Journalied and let the drive format.
    Once this was done I went to Bombich.com and downloaded carbon copy cloner
    Once on the desktop I selected the Mac hd as my source and the SSd as my target drive
    46 minutes later I had a perfect clone of my original with all serial numbers and programs.
    I now turned off my machine flipped it over removed the rear battery cover and the battery from the macbook
    With a small phillips screwdriver I removed the screw above the hard drive which permits a little rubber bar to be removed.
    I then pulled on the plastic tab on the drive and the original pulled out and the connector simply pulls off.
    I then with a small torx screwdriver removed the 4 torx screws from the side of the original drive and installed them on the SSD drive.
    I attached the connector to the drive which was a perfect fit and installed the drive back into the computer.
    Installed the rubber bar retaining unit with phillips screw, battery in once lever is in open position and replaced the lid.
    Note-lever must be in open position for battery to go in and out. It appears lever also secures battery and not just battery cover.
    Once everything finished and double checked I started the computer which worked flawless
    Only thing I noted was that I had to re-enter my wireless extreme name and password in order for it to work otherwise all other passwords were there.
    Less then 24 hours of use it is fast quiet and extremely cool.
    Power consumption has gone down from .60 amps @ 5 volts to .35 amps @ 5 volts a power savings of .25 amps or 1.25 watts per hour.
    Given that apple claims a 5 hour run time for this 4 amp battery at 12 volts or 48 total watts this means that the computer uses approximately 9.6 watts per hour.
    With this drive saving 7.5 watts over the 5 hours (1.25 x 5 hours)or now using only 8.35 watts per hour with this hard drive you should now get about 45 minutes more run time.
    Of course this is all speculative and does not take into account energy saved, by not running the fan more often as the hard drive barely registers any heat.
    In comparison my hard drive temperature was 108-f, and base was about the same, with cpu running around 120-f.
    Now with the new hard drive the temp is 32-f for the hard drive, with the base running about 86-f, and the cpu at around 108-f.
    The temperature for the HD appears to be too low to either be measured or register as 32-f would be freezing which is impossible in my household which hovers around 72-f.
    On a scale of 1-10 research was about a 10 formatting and cloning the drive about a 5 and for switching the drives about a 2, and only a 2 because you had to change from a phillips to a torx screwdriver.
    I hope this helps anyone else who is considering this upgrade to a 128 gb for less then $200.
    Tim

    Your ssd does not have a temp sensor so the software sets it to the baseline which is 32.

  • I have a imac 2308. where can I find a thunderbolt to VGA adapter to add additional monitors

    I am trying to attempt to add two additional dell monitors (vga) to my EMC2308 imac. I only have one thunderbolt port and have not had luck finding a thunderbolt to vga adapter. Any ideas?

    A notable peculiarity of Thunderbolt is that it uses exactly the same connector as Mini Display Port, and that's not all. The Thunderbolt connector also carries Mini Display Port video signals. That means you can plug a Mini Display Port video cable/adapter in to a Thunderbolt connector and your monitor will work.
    If you plan to do other things with your Thunderbolt connector and don't want it wasted on a monitor, you can also choose an HDMI --> DVI adapter, which for your purposes will be functionally equivalent.
    You can even use both at the same time.

    Don't think an Apple Store will do that work, but if you call around you might find an Authorized Apple Service Provider that will. see > Apple - Find Locations

  • JMS Adapter EJB Add-on

    hi
    I want to add this code to change  ONLY the JMS_IBM_Last_Msg_In_Group JMS Parameter
    any way to do it with EJB after all the messages are sent with the adapter?
    Thx,Shai
    MQConnectionFactory factory = new MQConnectionFactory();
    factory.setQueueManager("QM_host")
    MQQueue destination = new MQQueue("default");
    destination.setTargetClient(JMSC.MQJMS_CLIENT_NONJMS_MQ);
    Connection connection = factory.createConnection();
    Session session = connection.createSession(false, Session.AUTO_ACKNOWLEDGE);
    MessageProducer producer = session.createProducer(destination);
    String groupId = "ID:" + new BigInteger(24 * 8, new Random()).toString(16);
    for (int i = 1; i <= 5; i++) {
        TextMessage message = session.createTextMessage();
        message.setStringProperty("JMSXGroupID", groupId);
        message.setIntProperty("JMSXGroupSeq", i);
        if (i == 5) {
            message.setBooleanProperty("JMS_IBM_Last_Msg_In_Group", true);
        message.setText("Message " + i);
        producer.send(message);
    connection.close();

    Hi Shai,
    I'm not too convinced that this is the XI-way to go. The JMS adapter will have its own MQ Connection and handle the communication with JMS (putting the message on the queue, etc.)
    I believe, you should try one of the following options (even though I don't know whether they will work):
    Set Additional JMS Properties in the Communication Channel configuration (this will only allow a fixed value to be set)
    Implement a module that accomplishes this task. However, I don't know if this is supported by the Module Chain.
    Have you asked SAP (through an OSS Message) whether this can be accomplishe in a Module?

    Peter

  • Looking to add ssd to new dv7 7000

    I recently ordered a dv7 7000 and i am wanting to make the 1tb hdd that comes with it the secondary hdd and add an ssd as the boot drive.
    I have never had or installed an ssd drive and i am wondering what extra items i am going to need other than buying the ssd itself.  I assume there is a specific wire/connector i am going to need but i have been unable to find anything in my searches.
    Any suggestions or advice anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated .

    If your GF is out of contract, I would just add a line to my account and select a family plan and get her a phone and port her number over. (If she still wants it).
    If she is NOT out of contract and is with VZW, you can do an Assumption of Liabilty to bring her into your account and then you can choose a family plan and wait to get new phones. (This does not add time to either contract)
    If each of you are more than 12 months into your current contracts, (that is if she is on VZW also) and have a base plan of $49.99 or more a month, each can upgrade now at two year pricing. You forego your NE2 discounts and each MAY pay an add'l $20 but you each could get your new phones now and THEN bring her into your account via an AOL. This will change your contracts dates two more years from date of activation.
    I hope I did not confuse you too much.

  • Add SSD to HPE h8-1287c

    Does/has any information adding a 256gb SSD to improve HD performance for this desktop?
    Thank you, Richard

    Hi,
    These HP How-to articles will show you how to install hard drives.
    Your PC is provisioned for two hard drives so you should be able to use the empty bay in the hard drive cage.
    You will need a 3.5" to 2.5" hard drive adapter and a SATA data cable.
    The Samsung EVO 250GB is a really fast performer.  I am using three of them.
    Be sure to create a set of the HP recovery disks.
    Backup your data.
    Temporarily disconnect the hard drive.
    Install the SSD and cable the SSD to the SATA port that was used by the hard drive.
    Now boot up the HP recovery media and reload the system to the SSD.
    At some point after you have the SSD and system stable, then reconnect the hard drive to an empty SATA port. You can now use the old hard drive for an emergency boot drive and/or for bulk data storage.
