Adaptive resolution CS6..slow
Hello,
I am having an issue creating a simple graphic with no effects added. I have 2 layers one is a logo the other is shapes. Using the Ellipse tool I'm creating up to 73 circles and when I want to change the size or color of the circle after effects slows down completly and shows the "color wheel spinning" then still does not change the color. When this is happening I have the red wireframes through my image with a message saying adaptive resolution.
I do not know why this is happening and how do I fix this?
Here are my specs and I will add a screen capture:
MacBookPro Retina, 2012
Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E2620)
After effects:
Trial version 11.0.1.12
Thank You for your help
I've got a MBPro Retina and I'll be happy to take a look at your project.
Did you run the terminal commands necessary to add the Cuda Drivers for the MBPro??? If not, you can find instructions here. I'm actually quite happy with my setup.
Set to final quality is found in the Fast Previews section of the Comp Panel.

Slow Adaptive Resolution Update
We recently setup a monstrous workstation in studio by BOXX. Everything runs great however there is a sluggish update and response in the viewer of After Effects when moving a camera or scrubbing through a scene. Lite scenes have no issue....but slightly heavier scenes bog down heavily. I have a smaller lesser system at home but with similar specs that can scrub through the same scene as if it were on a premiere timeline with great adaptive updates to the preview panel. The scene consists of 7-8 5K resolution cutout still images spaced out in Z space so the camera move gives some parallax. I have tried the following options to fix it with no avail:
- Tried Off (Full Quality), Adaptive, Fast Draw, and Wireframe. Fast Draw obviously helps but the system at home still outruns it at full rez with adaptive resolution. 1/8, 1/4, etc all tried as well as upping the amount of texture memory from 1600 to 4500.
- Viewer Quality at all settings for both zoom and color.
- MP rendering on and off. Single core seems to be slightly more responsive. There are 40 cores on this system and I have tried many combinations of cores. The more cores the more sluggish it seems. Also almost impossible to render on all cores without rendering to frame sequences. Plus takes forever to prep those cores and actually render.
- Disk Cache on and off
- Layer Cache on and off
- Video cards don't seem to be natively supported under the Raytracer setting....tried both enabling and disabling unsupported GPU support.
- I even tried adding my video cards to the supported list in the raytrace text file. This seems to have accelerated the response some for sure but still no match for the system at home.
The system specs are as follows:
Windows 7 Pro 64bit
Dual Xeaon 2687W v3 (40 cores at 3.10-3.5Ghz)
128GB of RAM
2x500GB SSDs in RAID 1 for boot drive
1x800GB SSD for Adobe Cache
3xTITAN Black Editions with 6GB of ram each.
18TB RAID 50 fibre SAN array for media running at 900MBs Write and 1,650MBs Read
Home System that has no preview problems with same project:
Windows 7 Pro 64bit
Dual Xeaon 2687W v1 (32 cores at 3.10-3.4Ghz)
32GB of RAM
1x250GB SSDs for boot drive
1x250GB SSD for Adobe Cache
3x680 GTs with 4GB of ram each.
8TB RAID 5 internal SAS array for media running at 600MBs Write and 800MBs Read
This machine cost the facility quite the chunk of change and should be smashing through previews and adaptive updates in After Effects. The fact that a slightly lesser system can scrub through the scene as if it were a video file is completely confusing and points to there being a problem.
An odd thing I have noticed is the home machine's Fast Preview icon is lit blue constantly, though it is set at adaptive resolution, where the studio systems icon is grey until actually updating then it turns blue. Also the timeline instantly has a green bar over it when opening the comp on the home machine however it does not do that on the studio machine.(as there are no keyframes just layers in 3D space and I move the camera through z space to check their distances).
Any ideas as to the issue? Is it possible the three TITAN Black video cards are just not officially supported and optimized thus my preview problem? Or is it something deeper? Thanks.SLI is not enabled nor would it be for production purposes.
The Raytraced option does work under the non supported experimental checkbox or by adding the GPU to the supported list config file.
Both systems are designed to be full MGFX Workstations and Color Grading Workstations. This includes heavy 3D work in C4D and other apps. Including 3D GPU rendering. For Grading in DaVinci Resolve the more GPUs the better and in both of these configurations using CUDA acceleration across all three GPUs allows both machines to handle heavy color grade node trees with full premium debayer quality of RED Epic Dragon 6K in real-time outputted to high end grading monitor and larger client monitor. This is also true of Premiere. For finishing in uncompressed formats the throughout of the various raids is necessary, especially when you are talking about 400+ layers of 4-6k Tiff sequences in After Effects.
So these systems are adequate but more power I'd always needed to hit our deadlines and render.
That being said the newer system can actually use more cores than the old one at once as it can allocate ugh more ram.per core and therefore is more efficient in MP processing.
These things being the case the night and day difference in previewing the same project file is a mystery. The only thing I can think of is if these GPUs are truly not supported in AE or optimized. Or maybe the Xeon and this many threads are not optimized for AE. Though the problem persists even without MP enabled.
Any help and suggestions or recommendations would be welcome. I'm seriously considering pulling the Titan blacks out of the box and putting in a old 680 just to test. However that would be an undertaking as it is rack mounted in the server room. -
Can I set adaptive resolution to OFF as the default ?
Hi -
I turn off adaptive resolution (fast previews) as a matter of course but it seems that I have to do this specifically for every composition window.
The default is apparently for adaptive resolution to be on.
This is a little tedious and I wondered if there is a way to change this default behaviour.
I would expect to find such a setting in preferences but that only offers an option to set the degree of adaptive resolution - not turn it off completely.
Obviously not desperate but it would be one less hassle.
Thanks.Thanks Rick.
By the time I discovered that I didn't like adaptive resolution and then how to do something about it I already had a couple of CS6 project files and lots of comps on the current job.
I suppose I would have realised this before too long but I'm grateful to you for taking the time and getting me there quicker.
Thanks - Rod -
Here's my specs:
OSX 10.8.5
Pr6 6.0.5
Imac 3.4 i7
24GB ram
Plenty of space on my Mac HD
Media on a usb3 drive.
Recently installed the trial of CC
All of a sudden CS6 slows down and I get the beach ball when performing certain processes such as:
Duplicating a sequence
Renaming a bin
Dropping a merged clip into the project window.
It's really weird, it plays back my RED footage fine but when I do certain tasks
as I listed above, it beach balls and I can't work.
In the activity monitor I see that Premiere process hits over %100 cpu, when I do these processes.
Any idea how to fix this? I tried restarting, tried disbeling cuda and doing software only.
This just started happening and is a major time sink.Seems to just be affecting that one project file.
When I open a different project file, things work okay. When I create a new project file on the same media drive, things are okay (I often work off externals for clients so I keep everything on th drive).
Anybody have an idea what's going on? I am working with 5k RED files but the playback isn't the problem, it's those weird issues above. -
Adaptive Resolution while adjusting mask path
This is something that has been driving me crazy for a while. Whenever I adjust a mask path, the resolution of the preview window drops to 1/2 and displays the words "Adaptive Resolution (1/2)" appear in the top right corner of the preview window.
This make it really difficult to make precise adjustments. Is there a way to prevent resolution loss when adjusting mask paths? I've tried, to no avail, changing the Adaptive Resolution settings in the Preferences panel.
Much thanks,
DanielIn the Composition Panel select OFF (final quality) under the fast preview options.

Why performance of Illustrator CS6 slower than Illustrator CS5.5?
Ex: Process get text of TextFrame has 657 characters:
Dim t1 As String
Dim t2 As String
t1 = DateTime.Now.Minute & " " & DateTime.Now.Second & " " & DateTime.Now.Millisecond
Dim text As String
For iChar = 1 To iCharNum
oChar = oContents.Characters(iChar)
Dim str As String
str = oChar.contents.ToString
text = text & str
Next
t2 = DateTime.Now.Minute & " " & DateTime.Now.Second & " " & DateTime.Now.Millisecond

Adaptive Resolution with OpenGL doesn't work
I wanna use Adaptive Resolution with OpenGL, so I checked on OpenGL with Adaptive Resolution, but it's chosen and unchosen state doesn't make any difference on the OpenGL preview. I've already tried to mess with the settings.
Could someone help me?OpenGL stuff is handled via the prefs. There is no "Adaptive Resolution" in this mode - either it works at the resolutions specified in the prefs or it doesn't. The behavior is actually quite logical - if your graphics card is too weak, the OpenGL texture buffer will only be calculated once at the resolution, if the card has sufficient juice, it will always be full res. Everything else wouldn't make much sense...

Why is CS6 slow, 64bit-mode or not?
Got the CS6 trial for OSX. Its not nearly as responsive as promised.
It can't handle average files with let say 30states in it.
Escpecially if you create symbols with a lot of elements(30+) which are nested and you want to edit those symbols, there is huge perfomance drop:
You can't use your keyboard for moving elements within those symbols. The programs give you no feedback what it is doing.
Then I checked the activity monitor: Apparently fireworks is not running in 64bit mode.
Is this just the trial version or is the Adobe-Add misleading that it should be running in 64bit?
My comp-specs:
lates iMac
20GB Ram
SSDAnd why it has not been improved? Its so obvious slow!

Performance improvement in CS6 is made interms of refreshing the Property inspector on Mac platform.
On Windows platform file open /edit and save limit has been increased for 64 bit machines.
Adobe Fireworks CS6 is a 32-bit application only. Also performance interms of rendering on canvas or preview is not changed in CS6.
Thanks

Cs6 slow, lagging performance
As in the title, I have Photoshop cs6 and I cannot make it work properly. It's almost as the program was running on a much slower system. Common optimization has given no results. I can wait 5 seconds or more before seeing the effect of a command or brush stroke.
Cs5 gives no such probelms. I have a 64 bit Windows 7, but 32 and 64 bit versions behave the same. Here are my specs:

Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter Resolution?
If I hook my macbook to my hdtv using the Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter what's the highest resolution I'll achieve? Will it be the max resolution of the TV or the Macbook?
Hey,
These are the specs that Apple provides for the GMA 950.
"Extended desktop and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 1920 by 1200 pixels on an external display, both at millions of colors."

Mini Display Port to VGA Adapter Resolution Issue
Hi there folks, I just had to replace my NVIDIA 8800 so I opted for the upgrade to the ATI Radeon HD 5770 (Apple part number: MC742ZM/A)
I have two monitors on my desk, an apple 30" cinima display and a smaller 19" Hyundai monitor that uses a VGA connection as my second display.
After hooking up my Cinima Display to the DVI, and the Hyundai to the Mini Display Port via adapter and restarting my Mac the second monitor does not show up. Well, It appears on the arangement screen, and on the system profile screen, but no image appears.
If I unpluged and replugged the monitor then I can get an image to appear. Only I cannot change the resolution from 800x600. The monitor supports 1900x1200. I can see the correct resolution in the list, however selecting that resolution will not stay. It always reverts back to 800x600. I tried several other lower resolutions and none of those work either.
I zaped the PRAM, checked for system updates, hopped on one leg and cursed the gods but nothing has worked so far. I can give tech support a call tomorrow, but I was hoping someone on the forum knows of a solution since I know many of you are smarter than the tech support folks.
Thanks in advance!I had the exact same problem. It actually escalated from there and it would crash at the startup screen (the white one with the apple and the spinning gear). The only way I was able to fix this was to reformat the entire computer. I was lucky enough to have backed up all my data when it first started crashing. I've only reformatted yesterday and things seem fine for now. I don't know what caused it, or how to fix the problem any other way.

Enabling GPU in CS6 slows down brush strokes
Hello, I'm currently using Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended and I am experiencing a performance issue with the brush tool when the GPU option is enabled in the performance preferences.
When the GPU option is disabled I am able to draw lines and marks very quickly with all of the default brush tools available. Even when options such as scattering and dual brush are turned on simultaneously the brush strokes are rendered so quickly on the canvas it feels instantaneous. This is great for me because I use Photoshop and other programs for digital drawing and painting.
However with the GPU disabled I am unable to use functions such as canvas rotation, flick panning, scrubby zoom and so on - features that I find incredibly useful. Also at different zoom levels images become highly pixelated and smooth lines appear very jagged. This obviously makes images very difficult to work with!
As soon as I turn on the GPU option, even at the most basic setting the brush tool renders much slower across the canvas than when it was turned off. However other operations such as zooming, flick panning, saving etc appear to be very fast.
This is quite confusing (and disappointing) as the brush tool is by far the most important tool I use in Photoshop. I spend more time painting marks and drawing lines than anything else. My understanding is that the brush tool should be just as fast to use (if not faster?) when the graphics processor is enabled as when it is disabled.
Here is the setup I am using:
Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit)
Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended (64 bit) with latest updates as of 28/11/14
Asus Geforce GTX 560 Direct CU with the latest driver 344.75
16GB available RAM
Intel i7 Quad Core CPU 3.07 GHz
As my GPU does not appear to be working hard at all when Photoshop is running even with advanced settings turned on, I can only guess that this is a problem with the Nvidia driver or Photoshop itself? It seems as if the opengl drawing mode is not communicating properly with the Nvidia driver. That's my guess so far as I'm no tech expert.
I have followed every step of the Photoshop CS6 GPU FAQ multiple times http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/photoshop-cs6-gpu-faq.html
But the problem always persists.
I have also followed the advice of others by turning brush spacing up to 10% or higher which does help a little bit but this obviously does not solve the problem!
I would be extremely grateful if anyone could help me to solve this problem - perhaps someone from Adobe can test this on a similar hardware and software setup? I would be very interested to learn what exactly is going on that is causing the slowdown.
I will also notify Nvidia and see if they are aware of the problem.
Many thanks,
CalumYes, it sounds like something is wrong with your video card driver.
Until Apple releases a fix, you can keep OpenGL drawing disabled. -
Macbook Pro VGA adapter resolution issue
I have an Optoma projector that has been connected to my Lenovo laptop for the last 2 years. I have just decided to set my mac up to it, and had a mini display port to VGA adapter. The native resolution of my projector is 1280x800, yet when I plug in the mac, I can only get 800x600. If I change it to optimize for the built-in display, I get a scaled image of 1280x800 on what is really 800x600. This has been extremely frustrating and my searches on the web have proven unsuccessful. I have tried the PRAM/NVRAM restart where you hold Option, Command, P + R, and it has not resolved the issue. How can I display the correct resolution, which is exactly the same as the Macbook itself??
Upon more research, I have learned that holding down the "option" key while clicking Scaled in the Display Properties will allow you more resolutions to choose from. I now have the option of 1280x720, 1280x768 or 1280x960, but still not the true resolution which is 1280x800!! How ridiculous! Why can't the MacBook determine the resolution of the projector and use it to its maximum potential the way Windows did?

Why does Adobe Premiere CS6 slow playback after importing some audio?
Adobe Premiere CS6.0 v6.0.2
Mac Pro:
1, 4 core - 3.2ghz CPU
16gb ram (4 sticks of 4gb @ 1066 MHz)
1 Tb dive with OS/Apps on
2Tb 7200 RPM media drive
ATI Radeon HD 5770
Sequence:
30Fps
1920x1080
Media:
mostly .MFX files from a Canon XF100 however these clips commonly play nice with Premiere.
Issue:
After importing some audio clips (.wav/.mp3, possibly other extensions) to the timeline on occasion the video playback will become choppy and the audio will slow down 3% creating any voices in the video to become deeper and slows down. Choppy video playback as well. The problem is very annoying but it can be temporarily fixed with a computer restart but it will come back.
Things to note:
Creating a rendered ID (Exporting the movie out to a .mov) the slowed choppy video does not appear in the final movie.
Temp. Solution:
The only way I can fix this problem is by restarting the computer. Simply restarting Adobe Premiere and closing any non-essential applications does not fix the problem.
Any ideas on how to fix this are much apperciated.Try converting your MP3 to AIFF ,QT or something else Macs like. See if that helps.

Photoshop CS6 Slow Performance
Hi guys,
Wonder if you can help me with this one. I've noticed recently my copy of CS6 has become very slow and laggy.
Symptoms:
Unresponsive
Repeated messages about "Out of memory"
GUI unresponsive, everything goes grey
Temp Fix:
I've messed around with the memory settings to see if that helps, but it doesn't seem to do a great deal. I've had it set to 90% and 50% and get much of the same results.
Normally when the program hangs or becomes unresponsive, I have to close it via Task Manager
System:
Windows 7 Pro
2.4Ghz Quad Core CPU 64Bit
4GB RAM
Photoshop CS6 13.1.2 x64
As I write this my CPU usage is 5% and physical RAM is 66% - surely there is more than enough to keep Photoshop ticking over?
Any thoughts on how I can sort this out would be appreciated. It is becoming very annoying that I can't use the product properly and have to keep repeatedly restarting it.In case Chris wasn't clear enough, Photoshop doesn't act like that without something being wrong with your particular installation.
You say this happened recently... What's different from when it worked?
One additional piece of advice for something to try: Clear your preferences to defaults by pressing and holding Control - Shift - Alt immediately upon cold starting Photoshop. If you're quick enough to get the keys down - and you have to be very quick - Photoshop will prompt you to confirm the deletion of the current preferences. If it just comes up without prompting you weren't quick enough.
