ADAT interface

Hi,
not really LP related, but maybe someone can help me anyway: I'm looking for an ADAT-interface, that only needs to have 2 to 3 ADAT-ports. no analog-audio, midi, etc needed.
thanks.
christian

Hi Solo,
As you're now using G5/Logic to record, I presume that sometime in the future you'll ditch the ADAT XT? And I also presume that you currently plug in all your external gear into the XT, but you're trying to get the Optical ADAT out into your G5, and do all your mixing within Logic... right?
First of all, your G5, as well as the 410 doesn't support ADAT Lightpipe...
I suggest you sell your 410 and get the 1814 (or something similar), archive/copy all your ADAT XT tapes onto your G5 (via the 1814) and then stop using the XT... You can then plug in 8 instruments (or 4 stereo pairs) directly into the 1814 for recording via firewire into Logic... you wouldn't need your XT any more, after all the less equipment you have to fiddle with, the better : )
I've used M-audio's 1814 FW for a few years with no problems on a G5 (taking the ADAT out of my Behringer DDX3216 into the 1814 then into my G5, recording all 8 tracks at once), but as it is not currently supported on the Mac Pro, I've had to completely change the way I work - I get the same results with a much simpler set-up with just the Alesis Multimix 16 FW... No bulky mixer, no ADAT and no dedicated FW interface needed.

  • Q to the Pro's: ADAT Interface Channel Assignements with Alesis io|14

    Hello all,
    * Problem Outline
ADAT Channels via Alesis io|14 Firewire Interface into Logic Express 8 does not work, channels do not show up.
    * My Setup
    Fostex Digital Mixer -> ADAT -> Alesis io|14 -> FireWire -> Mac -> Logic Express 8
    * Description
Using the io|14, Logic correctly shows the io|14's 14 channels. All analogue inputs work as expected.
Now, with the Digital Mixer connected via ADAT, looking into Alesis's Monitor Software 'HDM', the level meters reveal that the input signals from ADAT appear on an input channel greater than 14, like 16 or 19.
Of course, Logic won't let me select any channel > 14 because the driver reports only 14 channels...
Does anyone have a tip how to solve this and work with the ADAT channels from Logic? Probably these channels need to be rerouted or something like that?
    TIA,
    Karl

    Yes… cross-purposes!
Anyway… there must be a reason why it is assigning these ADAT Channels to higher numbers than it can actually output. Perhaps you have already assigned 1-14 to something else? And I still think there must be some kind of mapping function to deal with this. I would have thought that by default, 15 would map to 1, 16 to 2, & so on… perhaps you can select banks of channels?
It's a shame the manual isn't clear. You can't find a Forum anywhere for users of this device?

  • ADAT to firewire converter

I have recently bought a Behringer ADA8000, which I will be taking through my Fostex DMT-8, and recording multiple tracks simultaneously into logic 7.2.
What I require is a simple converter, rather than having to fork out more money on an 8-channel firewire audio interface, if this is possible.
I thought this was the most relevant place to post such a question, thanks in advance and sorry if i got it wrong.

    'A simple converter' isn't possible.
What you require is a device that accepts digital audio signals sent via the ADAT interface and then sends then via FireWire in a protocol your audio applications can understand.
Guess what, that device is called an audio interface with ADAT ports.
As to what is the cheapest Firewire interface with 2 ADAT ports, that is another story, but check out interfaces in the Focusrite Saffire range, or from MOTU.

  • Questions for I/O interface experts

I have few questions for I/O interface experts:
I have a Power Mac G5 2.3 Ghz 8GB of RAM, PCI-X slots, and am running Final Cut Studio FC version 6. I currenly have an HD project on my timeline (uploaded directly form a P2 card via 400FW), and I'd like to be able to output on a HD VTR deck as wellas a BetacamSP deck:
    1) which AjA Kona cards (3, LHe, LH) is right for me?
    2) did you personally experience, or are you aware of any issues with this Kona card and Final Cut version 6? Any tips before I purchase?
    3) will this card allow me to output uncompressed HD, that is, the same quality I uploaded?
    4) in which of the slots on my back tower does it go? 64bit 100MHz or 64bit 133MHz?
    Cheers,
    Rinaldo

I think FireWire is probably the best route.
The main difference between the two seem to be that the 1814 has more inputs and the ADAT interface, the 410 has more outputs.
So are you planning on recording, then go for the 1814.
If you envision that 2 mics and 2 inputs is enough for your recording needs and you eventually want to mix surround you'd need the 410 as it is the one with enough outputs.
If you want specific advice about interfaces I suggest you ask in the Logic forums as those users would be most experienced with this aspect of an audio system.

  • Gradual distortion

    Hello,
I am a new user of Logic Express. Love the possibilities of this app but am having problems. I suspect my mac is not powerful enough or I have buffer settings or sample rate conversions incorrectly set? In the Activity Monitors app, it seems I am using about 30-60% computer power (never near the top).
Using Alesis io/14 interface, I am transferring 8 tracks (6 digital, 2 analog) from ADAT. Logic Express starts recording with little or no distortion, then the tracking audio increases to virtually "white noise" (the recorded audio is OK). Re-engaging the Audio Core seems to re-start this unsuccessful process all over again.
When finished, I've tested that it is not the Alesis interface causing the distortion by disengaging the Alesis interface outputs by using the Mac's built in-audio outputs. Then when playing back the tracks in Logic Express, the sound is OK, but then gradually distorts to "white noise". The more tracks (no effects so far) that are activated causes the distortion to increse more quickly. With just one track (no effects) playing, the distortion increases a small amount near the end. When bouncing the files to Itunes, the output seems correct (without distorion). So it seems Logic Express records properly, but does not let me hear the mix without increasing distortion.
I tried adjusting buffer sizes from minimum to maximum, no effect. I am wondering if capturing 44 bit from my 48 bit ADAT machine is causing my macintosh to use excessive computer power? (I tried changing, but my mac keeps auto-re-setting to 44bit).
It seems I am not doing anything advanced at the moment and thus, Logic Express should work correctly. What remedies can I try?
    Thank you,

    Terry,
Is your Alesis interface locked to the ADAT's
digital clock? I'm not familiar with the Alesis
I/O 14 or the software is uses. In any case,
the ADAT machine should supply the master clock
    signal, the Alesis audio interface
should lock to that external signal.
I transfer 8 digital channels from ADAT all the
time with no problems, so it is possible.
    Pancenter
Thank you Noeqplease and Pancenter for your prompt
    replies.
Noeqplease: I tried changing my sample rate from
44kHz to 48kHz. It improved somewhat, but did not
    fix
    the problem.
Ok, now this makes me think you don't have the
Alesis I/O14 locked to the ADAT's clock.
First, what sample rate is your ADAT tape recorded
    at.
Second, you usually have to tell your audio interface
software to lock to external digital clock. It's not
something that just "happens". The ADAT needs to be
the clock master. Does the Alesis come with a
    software applet
that allows adjustment via the Alesis' software
    drivers?
Look there for a setting to lock to external clock.
When it's set right it should automatically match the
sample rate of the incoming clock.
The sample rate should be the same as your ADAT tape,
the ADAT will be feeding audio and clock sync through
    the lightpipe cable.
Before, when I start to record from the
ADAT, the monitoring mix began clear, then ended in
static/white noise at the end of the song. Now,
    there
is constant static throughout the recording process
(although much less). The static tends to get loud
when the music gets loud, and then softer when the
    music get softer.
Sounds like a digital clock problem to me.
PanCenter: I am glad you have ADAT transferring
experience. I believe my Alesis interface is locked
to the ADAT's digital clock. I have set it in the
midi/audio preference controls. If there is another
place to set it, I may be in dereliction.
Alesis Drivers: Yikes, I've been reading Craig
Anderton's forums about possible "faulty" Alesis
drivers. This is a possibility, but I have loaded
    the
very latest drivers from Alesis. Perhaps I should
re-try one of the earlier drivers?
    Don't know about that.
What happens when you play back the recorded "analog"
    audio?
What happens when you mute the analog audio...
Problem with Apple's Core Audio: I have OS 10.4.3.
    Will upgrading to 10.4.9 help?
    Don't think so.
    Pancenter-
    Hello Pancenter,
You wrote "First, what sample rate is your ADAT tape recorded at."
I believe all ADATs record at 48 (default). If one can change this setting, I don't believe I ever did. But I shouldn't assume, I will confirm that I have indeed recorded at 48.
You wrote "Does the Alesis come with a software applet that allows adjustment via the Alesis' software drivers?" Yes, there is one (that I know of) seperate window that allows to change these parameters. They are currently set to 48 and clocked to ADAT, BUT, I now notice the "LOCK" box. Sometimes it reads "lock" and sometimes "disabled/unlocked". It seems to change on its own. You wrote "you have to tell your audio interface software to lock to external digital clock." Ah-HAHHH! Errr, how do I do this? Is it possible it is doing this automatically? I am encouraged THIS might be the problem!
You wrote "What happens when you play back the recorded "analog" audio? What happens when you mute the analog audio..."
    When I ONLY record from the analog outs from the ADAT or other source, thru my Alesis io/14 line inputs (not using the lightpipe) to Logic Express, it works perfectly. If the recorded "analog" tracks are recorded along with the "lightpipe" tracks there is some distortion on the "analog" tracks. No matter which tracks are muted, all the tracks have at least some static. (With earlier Alesis drivers, the ADAT track recordings, when including lightpipe, started with 0% static and then ended with 100% static.){Because Logic Express only records 12 inputs (unfortunately, only includes ADAT tracks 1 [LE 7] thru 6 [LE 12]), to record simutaneously, I have to record ADAT tracks 7 and 8 through the Alesis analog line inputs.}
I suppose I COULD record 2 sets of four ADAT "analog" tracks and then sync them somehow, but that would be a darn-dirty-shame. The ADAT interface option was the entire reason for buying the Alesis io/14. I would have bought something other than the Alesis io/14.
OK, I am encouraged by your clock syncing comments. Let me look into the manuals/try adjusting the settings and see if I can make this bird sing.
If you have further comments, please don't hesitate to add.
Pancenter, again, thank you for your continued assistance,
    Terry-t

    Hi,
Anyone here have experience of Logic8, Snow Leopard and Echo Audiofire8? Is the combo stable? Thinking of getting one of those. My criterias for audio interface are two decent preamp, ADAT-interface and stable drivers.

"The only problem that I see with this is that it only has one firewire port. That could mean problems for many people as most laptops only have one firewire port - you can't guarantee a reliable connection through a secondary FW port on an external HD or through a hub."
My Powerbook only has one firewire port. Right now, I connect my Ozonic into the 2nd port on my Lacie firewire drive, which then goes to my laptop port. Is this generally unstable? I can record 4 tracks simultaneous, with no problems into Logic, Pro Tools and Live. Do you foresee problems if I went to get a ProjectMix and an ADAT interface and record 16 tracks? With the infamous "Davec test" (http://duc.digidesign.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=335638&page=&view=&sb=5&o=&fp art=1&vc=1) I can do 26 tracks in Pro Tools. I'd never have that many plugins running if i were to do 16 at once.

  • Need help finding an audio interface for my old ADAT

    Hello,
I've been using Cakewalk Sonar for about 3 years and recently purchased a Macbook Pro and am making the switch to logic. In Windows I was using a E-mu 1212m PCI audio card that was connected via lightpipe to a Behringer ADA8000 8-channel preamp that has ADAT lightpipe output.
The songs I do are 90% audio with midi only used very sparingly for maybe a piano here and there. I record drums with a 6 mic setup (2 overheads, 2 on snare, one bass, one hi-hat). I'm looking for a new audio interface to use with my Macbook Pro. I'm also looking at purchasing Logic Express as it seems like the only things in Pro that affect me is more channels than I use on songs.
I would really like to spend no more than maybe 400-600 dollars if possible. Based on reading these forums, the best thing may be for me to get a MOTU 828 MKII off eBay (they seem to be available for about 500) or PreSonus Firepod.
I've heard that some people love the PreSonus Fireface, but I'm not sure how the Firepod compares. Are the converters on the Firepod and 828 comparable or is the 828 significantly better?
Also, my behringer preamps seem OK but I wonder if the Firepod would probably have better sounding ones, I think I only paid 2 or 300 dollars for the Behringer one.
Any feedback at all would be great. Alot of great stuff on this forum I'm just having a tough time figuring out if I should ditch my existing ADAT preamp for a Firepod or use it with the 828 basically.
    Thanks,

  • Interface with the most adat opti i/o's

    Hi,
I currently use RME's Raydat which has 32 adat i/o's. I thought of using two raydats via aggregate device, but aggregate device has never worked solidly for me.
Does anyone know of a single interface offering more than 32?
Is stacking Motu 2408's with the Motu 424 pcie still a viable route in Snow Leopard?

  • Using ADAT Optical Interface

I am trying 2 add additional tracks via Optical Converter and have no idea how to get started. I am running:

    Behringer Ultragain PRO-8 Digital ADA8000

Can anyone here help me get started in enabling the Behringer ADAT? Getting the inputs set-up?
If this is the wrong Forum for this or even wrong site, could someone lead me in the right direction? I realize this a newbie question.
    Thank you in advance!

Perhaps someone else will be more familiar than I with the equipment you're using, but just to get the ball rolling (since no-one else has pitched in yet)…
Is the problem that you don't know how to enable 16 tracks?
+"If you are using the native engine, you can limit the number of tracks via the+
Audio > Audio Driver > Max. Number of Audio tracks
+setting for the individual driver/hardware, thereby limiting the amount of memory and processing power required."+
IOW, first check there & make sure it isn't set to prevent you having enough tracks. It should be set to a sensible number, but if not, that could be limiting you. (You can disable this setting, but I doubt that will be necessary.)

  • Suggestions on firewire/usb interfaces with 16ch of adat lite pipe

    hey guys,
I recently bought an rme fireface 800 and am not too happy with it. looking for a firewire or usb interface with at least 16 channels of adat. can't use any pci options like 2408 because slots are full.
    thanks

convertors on the fireface aren't anywhere close to my apogee stuff, digi 192 or the da convertor on the presonus central staion for that matter. did small shoot out between fireface vs apogee da16 vs central station. Fireface was by far the worst of the bunch. Thought it was just me and called a friend who has a ff and a cs. he said the that ff sounded like "pooh: running analog through the central station but sounded great being connected directly to speakers. all of my other convertors sound great coming through the cs (digi 192, apogee trak 2, apogee da 16) but fireface doesn't. all were clocked off of apogee big ben and all were using moogami or monster cable. So the logical conclusion would be that the fireface d/a convertor aren't that good.
In thinking about it maybe the fireface might only sound good when it is using its own clock and doesn't like big ben (I haven't tried that yet). I suppose I could reconfigure things so that when I'm using logic the fireface is the master for everything but I run pt and logic at the same time and would rather not.
It just seems to be a waste to only use the fireface for it's 16ch of adat and routing matrix...but it looks like I might not have a choice.
any insights, comments or suggestions are welcome.
    thanks,

  • Dropouts when using ADAT as interface

Hello, I have been experiencing drop outs when using ADAT machine as an A to D converter. The setup is this: Motu 828mkII=10 ana inputs, ADAT lightpipe out into Motu828mkII provides 8 more inputs to Logic, now 18 total. The ADAT sync out cable into Motu 828mkII. So far I believe there is nothing else to configure, just select the proper input channel in Logic and whoop there it is.Yes, but I'll be holding a chord on a Moog that is being converted by the ADAT then periodically you hear a quick dropout say 125ms where silence gets recorded to Logic. NOT good. Anyone know of a parameter in Logic or the Motu that must be set in order for this to work properly ?

    G5 Dual 2.7 4.5 gb   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Logic 7.1.1 motu 828mkII

Since no one has has jumped in here....
If you're using the ADAT as only a set of converters and not transferring from tape, there's no need to attach the
ADAT sync cable. So, do away with that.
I haven't used the MOTU 828MKII before so bear with me.
When using the ADAT as converters...the ADAT has to be the master clock. With RME hardware, I have to manually switch my hardware (using a software applet) to sync to the incoming ADAT lightpipe clock.
Is this something that needs to be done on the MOTU, or does it auto-sync to the ADAT lightpipe clock?
Make sure the 828 is synced to the ADAT and you're not running two independent clocks. Logic/MOTU sampe rate should match the ADAT's sample rate.

    Hey K T,
Thanks for the reply. The drive doesn't show up in Disk Utility via Snow Leopard. I see all the other mounted drives(Macintosh HD, Bootcamp and Matshita DVD...) but no USB drive =/
that's not a good sign and usually means a dead drive. try booting from SL dvd and using disk utility there. does the drive show up? also, do you have access to a different computer? try it there.

I am confused:Please clarify for me.
In the post title you say you want to go to an ADAT.
In the post itself you say you want to go to a DAT.
    They are different machines.
    So,Questions for you:
1.Does your rosetta800 have ADAT optical outputs? If YES,then you can go to ADAT.If NO,then you cannot go to ADAT.
2.Does your rosetta800 have SPDIF or AES outputs? If YES,then you can go to DAT.If NO,then you cannot go to DAT.
At the risk of sounding slightly mauve with shades of red, please,RTFM of the rosetta800.
    Cheers
