ADAT to firewire converter

I have recently bought a Behringer ADA8000, which I will be taking through my Fostex DMT-8, and recording multiple tracks simultaneously into logic 7.2.
What I require is a simple converter, rather than having to fork out more money on an 8-channel firewire audio interface, if this is possible.
I thought this was the most relevant place to post such a question, thanks in advance and sorry if i got it wrong.

'A simple converter' isn't possible.
What you require is a device that accepts digital audio signals sent via the ADAT interface and then sends then via FireWire in a protocol your audio applications can understand.
Guess what, that device is called an audio interface with ADAT ports.
As to what is the cheapest Firewire interface with 2 ADAT ports, that is another story, but check out interfaces in the Focusrite Saffire range, or from MOTU.

  • Thunderbolt w firewire converter to older MacBookPro

I just purchased a Thunderbold Display and everyone told me it would work with my 2009 mac book pro but after plugging it into to my firewire converter it is still not responsive! Does anyone have a advice! I just want them to sync up!

    Hello jordiemosley22,
If your MacBook Pro does not have a Thunderbolt port, then the display will not power on. Take a look at the article below for more information about the system requirements as well as any other questions you may have about your new Thunderbolt Display.

  • I have an iPod G2 with a firewire 400 lead. how can I attach it to my new 13 inch Mac book Pro, is there a 400 to 800 firewire converter. USB lead wont work with the Macbook Pro. iPod used as an external drive to archive memory cards on the go.

My G2 iPod that I use as an external drive to archive memory cards on the go cannot link with my new 13" Macbook Pro cause it uses a firewire 400 lead. It will not work with a USB lead. Is there a firewire 800 ipod lead or converter available? Can any one shed some light on this please?

As far as I know, if a harddrive works with a Macpro, it should work with the Macbook: if your Macbook is low on power, plug in the AC adapter
If your Macbook has a firewire port, then it should be fine. BUt i would do somemore research first.

  • RCA to Firewire converter?

I'm just starting to get into real editing (FC Exp rather than iMovie) and I realize that people may give me video in fromat other than my mini DV. Am I right in thinking I need a converter (RCA to Firewire?) to get video off their camcorder onto my Mac?
If so, are there some things I should look for/be wary of in a converter? Do some have trouble with Macs? Would if be cheaper to purchase some kind of player that will play and output several types of tape?
Sorry if this is either too broad or covered elsewhere, I didn't find other info here. Any advice would be appreciated, I am just starting with Final Cut Exp. and I'm hoping to go from hobby to small home business, but don't want to waste $ or start with bad habits....
    Thanks,
    Bryan

I mainly Camera Op, but can also edit and started off in a similar way to the way you're intending, but I'd had a bit more camera operating experience and so really the editing came after, which is why I was giving you an answer from the perspective of all round video production.
Having said that, as you describe it, you may be OK starting slowly, offering editing services as a way in. It's just that folk may ask you to shoot some stuff as well, so it would be crazy not to learn camera techniques just in case.
Starting off small by perhaps doing a couple of projects cheaply for friends/relatives/neighbours and things may snowball by word of mouth. As you get more experienced, you may be able to advertise locally or on the web. You just don't want to promise what you can't deliver and get negative feedback.
If you're not too experienced, don't put all your eggs in one basket and invest all you have and chuck in your job.
I went back to college as a mature student and took a college degree in Media Production, with tutors that had TV, Film and Radio Industry experience. I also did as much as I could out of college to increase my knowledge and scrimped and saved for equipment a bit at a time.
After college I worked in a crappy job part time, doing bits and pieces, both for myself and for others who'd seen I was serious and reliable and knew how to wield a camera in a half decent fashion.
As I got more work, it put me in a position to be able to chuck in my old job, but I didn't do it 'till I was sure I could get enough work to pay the bills. I've done corporates, weddings, music video, documentary, fiction and freelance news camera, mostly camera op but also editing, sound, directing - it helps to be able to multitask!
So my advice is to start it off as a sideline, learn as much as you can and only upgrade your equipment if you can justify the expense or need. You may start editing home videos for people but as your capabilities expand, different avenues may open. It really does depend upon how much you want it and how much you're prepared to put in.
Either that or win the lottery or marry a rich widow!
    Good luck.

  • S-Video to USB or Firewire Converter

I'd like to use the S-Video output on my VCR to input into my Mac via either USB or Firewire. Is there an affordable (less than $50) converter that can do this job? I can use either iMovie or Final Cut.

Unfortunately there is no under $50 converter that will do what you want unless you can find a 'deal' on eBay or Craigslist.
The Canopus ADVC-55 will do the job and is about the least expensive converter available, but it goes for $200. AND, if you were to consider that expense I'd really suggest the ADVC-110 instead - at the same price it gives you bi-directional conversion, not single direction.

  • USB to FireWire converter cable, will it work?

There are a number of sellers on auction sites selling USB to FireWire (4-pin) converter cables. Will these work with iMovie in respect of connecting my Samsung MiniDV Digital (tape) camcorder? The seller claims they will, but I am skeptical based on what I've read on the internet - so I thought I'd ask the discussions for their advice/experience...?
FYI I'm using a 13 inch Alu MacBook prior to the inclusion of a FW port...

Despite Niel's great suggestion, the bottleneck is the USB connection into the Mac; even though it's possible to plug a FireWire adaptor into that USB/ExpressCard socket, the ultimate connection (..or combination..) has a USB specification.
USB delivers burst of high speed data, not continuous hi-speed data, which is what FireWire offers, and what miniDV camcorders send out. The camcorder won't be able to make proper contact with the Mac at the far end of the chain, so the computer won't "see" the camcorder, and nor will the camcorder be able to tell the computer "here I am, sending you a digital video-&-audio stream".
The connectors will all physically fit together ..just as you can physically pour paraffin (kerosene) into a car's petrol (gasoline) tank ..but that doesn't mean that the car will actually run with a tank full of kerosene ..or diesel fuel, for that matter.

  • SCSI to USB2 or Firewire converter?

I got my wife a mini and would like to connect her large format Epson scanner to it, but it has a SCSI connector. I see a lot of converters out on the market but am not sure which I should get. They run from very cheap to very expensive and some say they are not OSX compatible. Has anyone used one that works? Preferrably something not too pricey. Firewire or USB2, though Firewire is probably the better one to use.
She's running the lastes Tiger by the way.
    Thanks!

    Yeah,
The large format scanners are expensive, so I don't blame you for wanting to make it work, and it sounds like the drivers may not present a problem.
The SCSI to PCMCIA adapters are common, so that you could make it work on a PowerBook with a PC Card slot, and SCSI to PCI cards abound, so you could make it work on a Desktop Mac.
    But wait, there's more!
Here's a handy little Ratoc adapter for SCSI to Firewire. It states that it is OSX and Tiger compatable. At about $89 retail, it's a little pricey, though.
    http://www.ratocsystems.com/english/products/subpages/firerex1.html
Once upon a time I had an Agfa SnapScan SCSI scanner that was great. So, please let us all hear if you try the Ratoc adapter and how things turn out.
    Peace to you,

  • Agfa DuoScan T1200 SCSI with USB or FireWire converter?

    Hi!
I am in the process of upgrading to a new iMac and I am currently looking for any success stories on connecting and using (both in opaque and transparent mode) the venerable Agfa DuoScan T1200 SCSI scanner with Intel-based iMacs.
Has anyone around here been successful in doing this?
    Options:
    * SCSI to USB converter: which brands have you tried?
    * Scanning software Agfa's FotoLook (running on Rosetta) or VueScan.
Thanks a lot for any input!
    /rafa

    Dude en BA
You are discussing just what I am dealing with about a friend. Just an early answer, is that there are SCSI-USB adaptors, costing about US$70,- to US$130,- here in USA. Have yet to find if this AGFA is supported in OSX. Can work with OS9 (Classic), will have to check if what software can be downloaded.
You are thinking of doing what I am working on my friend to get away from. Moving everything off his 10 year OS9, past his 5 year OSX to his 2.5 year OSX! Your avenue a possible but, but possibly not worth it.
    Best wishes

  • Using Nikon Super Cool Scan 8000ED through 800/400 firewire converter

I have a Nikon Super CoolScan 8000 ED that I am trying to use with my iMac quad-core i5 running Snow Leopard. The only connection coming out of the scanner is Firewire 400. I purchased a Firewire 400/800 adapter and plugged it into the Firewire 800 port on the iMac. There is no response from the computer, it doesn't even seem to be able to detect that the scanner is connected at all.
I have downloaded the driver from Nikon, and it appears to be installed on the computer.
    Any suggestions? -J.

People have had a lot of problems with FW400/FW800 plug adapters. Better to use a cable with a 6-pin FW connector on one end and 9-pin FW connector on the other. Here is the cable I use and it works perfectly.
Make sure you can 'see' the scanner in +System Profiler > Hardware > Firewire.+ If the scanner shows up there, then any scanning app should be able to access the scanner.
Also, what driver did you download from Nikon? There is no driver needed for this scanner on OS X. Did you download & install Nikon Scan (4.0 or 4.0.2)? You don't need it - it's not a driver, it's a scanning app and it was never updated for Snow Leopard; only a lucky few seem to have been able to get NikonScan working on Snow Leopard.
Download a copy of Vuescan - it works great with the Nikon scanners.

  • Choosing a Video Format - Importing using an Analogue/FIrewire Converter

I am importing video using a Canopus ADVC110 analogue video converter, and am not sure what the best format to import is. None of the documentation on either iMovie (or Final Cut for that matter) has mentioned what the precise differences are between all of the offered formats. Obviously HD doesn't apply here - but what would be the difference or advantage/disadvantage of importing in say DV-NTSC as opposed to MPEG-4 for example? Is there a reason why I would use one setting over another in this case? Any info would be appreciated.

I am importing video using a Canopus ADVC110 analogue video converter, and am not sure what the best format to import is.
The Canopus ADVC110 converts your analog input to DV which can be captured directly to any Apple editor and is a dedicated video editing format. Its primary disadvantage is that the captured files are generally much larger than MPEG-4 or H.264 files. The primary disadvantage to use of MPEG-4 would be having to convert already compatible files to the MPEG-4 compression format and the attendant potential for a loss in quality depending on the data rate/settings used for the re-compression.

  • Daisy Chain USB To FireWire?

    Hi all.
I'm not really sure where to post this, so any suggestions about a better place would be great. Anyway, here's my question.
I do a lot of work with photos, and they take up a lot of hard drive space, so what I'm planning to do is this: I'll buy a big external hard drive with lots of connections (1 USB, 2 FireWire 800, 1 FireWire 400). I'll also buy a smaller external hard drive with much less in the way of connections (1 USB only). The big drive will act as my main storage drive, with all the files for each image included on it. The smaller drive will act as the bakcup drive, with the top 20% or so of my best photos in only a compressed format on it. I want the smaller (backup) drive to be as cheap as possible, as I don't have much of a budget at all. Here are the two drive selections I've made: big drive:
    LaCie Big Disk Extreme+ Triple
    Small drive:
    WD Elements
    Desktop
So, here's the question: I know that you can daisy chain FireWire drives that have more than one port together, like this:
A cable from FireWire port on Drive A to FireWire port on Drive B, then a cable from another FireWire port on Drive B to the FireWire port on computer. I know this works (right?).
But I don't want to have to spend more money on Drive A (the backup drive) so that it has a FireWire port. Since Drive B (the main drive) has a USB port, I thought I would run a USB cable from Drive A to Drive B like this:
*Setup 1*:A cable from the USB port on Drive A to the USB port on Drive B, then a cable from the FireWire 400 port on Drive B to the FireWire 400 port on the computer.
Will setup 2 work? Will the data from Drive A make the crossover from USB to FireWire? If not, I suppose I could also use this setup:
*Setup 2:* A cable from the USB port on Drive A to one of the FireWire 800 ports on Drive B, then a cable from the FireWire 400 port on Drive B to the FireWire 400 port on my computer. Will this work better? Do USB to FireWire 800 adapters really work?
So, basically, all I really need to know is whether or not Setup 1 will work, and if it doesn't, whether or not Setup 2 will. Also, if anyone has any info/reviews/stories about the two drives I've selected, I'd love to hear that as well.
Thanks so much in advance for any help I get. Sorry about the long post; I hope it made sense.
    Thanks again.
    Nate

    Thanks for the response!
What about Setup 2, though? Does someone sell a USB to FireWire Converter?
Nobody has heard of a USB to FireWire converter that works.
The first example you gave would require a USB B to USB B cable or perhaps a "gender bender". Both of the drives you're looking at seem to still use the original full-sized USB B port, while many have gone to the mini-B. It wouldn't work anyways since both are USB slave devices. USB was never designed to daisy-chain.
Why can't you just connect the USB-only device to the USB port. If you're strapped for ports, then maybe a USB hub. You wouldn't even need a powered hub if you have a few low-powered devices and this external drive which doesn't use bus power.

  • How to Run a SCSI Scanner with Firewire In OS X?

Does anyone know how to run a SCSI scanner with Firewire in Mavericks?
I have unsuccessfully tried the RATOC FR1SX SCSI-to-Firewire converter. The Ratoc is recognized as a Firewire device in the System Profiler (see pic below). However, the VueScan scanning software does not recognize the scanner.  I know the scanner works because I have been using it in an old HP PC. As such I  installled Windows 7 64 bit via Boot Camp to see if I could use the scanner, but had no luck.
    I have an iMac 21.5-inch, Mid 2010.
    ANY HELP?

The Mac scanner driver is not seeing it as a native SCSI device assuming VueScan supports the model of scanner you have. (You did not list the scanner model.)
Other than getting a modern non-SCSI scanner, a possible option would be to get a Thunderbolt PCI expansion chassis and a 'real' SCSI interface card. There is no guarantee this will work though as SCSI has been discontinued in the Mac world for years and years. If you then want to look at a SCSI card for use with the expansion chassis then look at the following.
Hmm, just looked the AttoTech SCSI cards have been discontinued as well, as I said SCSI is ancient history in the Mac world.
