ADC Apple Display only works by unplugging-replugging power source

I recently replaced my PRAM battery due to the following issues:
1. The ADC Cinema Display quit
2. I kept getting a "update time manually message
3. I lost connection with an external
I replaced the battery and it solved the external disk mounting, but I have to continually reset my pram by unplugging to get the cinema display to get it to work. I have reset the pmu button (for 1 second) . I have done an Apple/option pr startup pram reset. Funny thing is that it started up to the original drive. I have 3 drive slots occupied. The original drive is still in the same drive slot Don't know if this could be an issue.
Okay, I just did another restart after the screen went dead again. It didn't connect. I am unplugging, waiting 30 seconds, replugging, and waahla... the display is on. It just went off again after about a minute. I hit to on button and it didn't start. I disconnected the power this time and it restarts and the display is on. Anyone have a clue on this one?????

Allan,
Thanks for the reply. I'm running NVIDIA Geoforce4 T 4500 128mb, the original card. I have no usb cords plugged into the display. I never unplug it except in storms. I'm unplugging/replugging just recently to get the display to work. I have had the computer since 2002 and just replaced the pram battery yesterday. I'm not using any cable adapters. I have 2 extra drives installed in addition to the original ibm. All drives are ATA.  Interestingly, if I zap the pram, as I did for the first remedy, it restarts not in my start up drive (WD 320), but to the original drive running Tiger (ibm 120). I'm thinking about changing drive slots, but I don't know if that will do anything, just a guess.

  • Display only works for 2 or 3 seconds after this is black on Qosmio G50

    Hi
    I have a problem with my G50.
On starup the display only works for 2 or 3 seconds after this is black, I connect to a external display and using de FN+F5 i can see everything on the second display, if I turn to the internal display using FN+F5 it works only the same 2 or 3 seconds.
    thanks

    Hello
If you can see everything on the external screen the graphic card itself is ok and works properly! So the problem must be the internal display itself or a part of it like FL inverter
Its hard to say what part exactly and I think this can only be done from professional people. So you should contact nearest authorized service provider in your country and ask the guys for help. Im sure the problem can be clarified with the guys very easy because they have professional diagnostic tools. Also they can order original Toshiba spare parts to exchange the defective hardware part.
Here is a list of them:

  • Mouse Only Works When Unplugged

    Hi,
When running gnome under xorg, my mouse only works if I unplug it and then plug it back in whilst in the x environment. I am not using the hotplug daemon, and have the ohci_hcd module loaded. Can anyone please help me with this problem?
    Thanks,

Or.... run the hotplug daemon ;P  The hotplug daemon will detect that you have a usb mouse plugged in that wasn't loaded, so will load the driver.

  • External display only works with bootcamp

Ok, so I am not by any means bad with computers, in fact I am quite good with them.  I have quite a bit of experience and can usually sort just about any problems I have out myself but this is just getting really annoying.  I have a 2011 13 inch macbook pro, and a SyncMaster BX2335 monitor.  I bought a miniDP to hdmi adapter when i bought the computer, and it worked great to display on my tv, however when I connect my hdmi to dvi cable up to the mbp, so that I can use my monitor, their is no picture and the monitor sketches out a bit, displaying random error messages.  At first I thought that my hdmi to dvi cable was just to old to work with the mDP to hdmi adapter. However, for an unrelated reason I had to install windows under bootcamp today, and I noticed that the external monitor works.  For some reason the exact same setup that I am trying to use under OSX which I greatly prefer, mDP->HDMI->DVI, only works under my bootcamp partition...I can not figure out why.  The only thing that happens under osx is that the monitor is recognized, but no amount of tweaking resolutions or settings was able to get anything to display.
Oh and I have 10.6.7 installed, which was supposed to fix display issues.

Tabudrummer, just thought I'd give you a tip. I've been reading around the web and it seems like the 13" has a problem with the mDP->hdmi->DVI setup (I've got it set up the same way). Seems like OS X doesn't like it . I hope to get hold of a mDP-DVI cable in the next few days and see if it helps. Will report to you

  • My display only works when held in the landscape position outdoors?

My ipad works fine indoors, but when I take it outdoors to read, it only works in the landscape position. In the portrait position, nothing shows up at all.
    Any suggestions?

Thanks for reading and thanks for the advice. Perhaps I'll ask them about it next time this problem occurs, although carrying the thing through a mall that is only about a mile away is the least of my worries. I'll do if it is both free (I don't make enough at my job to pay for such a service) and relatively speedy, although I'd hate for them to come over and for the computer to work properly (as bad as that sounds). It'd be a wasted trip and nothing would get fixed.
I'm contemplating videotaping myself performing my "fixes" on it the next time I have this problem.

  • X220 uncontrollably switches to 50Hz refresh rate upon unplug from power source

    Hello,
I'd like to reiterate that I LOVE my x220 apart from the few issues I have with it.  Having said that, I am having the (seemingly) ubiquitous problem where the laptop constantly switches to 50Hz when unplugged from a power source.  I have tried reinstalling the Power Manager and Power Manager driver, and all of my system software is up to date.
Just to be certain, is everyone else experiencing this issue as well?  I know T420s owners recently reported it and it was subsequently forwarded to engineering.  As long as a fix is in the works I am happy. :-)

    Hey erik,
I really do appreciate your input.  That's a good idea, though honestly I don't know if I will bother with all of that now. :-)  Perhaps instead if I get a moment in the near future I may try wiping out all Intel graphics drivers entirely from the system manually and then reinstalling.
Having said all of that, on a somewhat unrelated note, I'm getting 4,900+ in 3DMark06, which is shocking!  After experiencing the trouble with the unplug/replug refresh rate switch, I tried a wide variety of solutions including using the 2361 graphics drivers from Intel's site.  This plus my high-speed fan settings at anything over 60C probably helped contribute to the score I guess.
But back to the topic... is anyone else experiencing these same refresh rate switching issues?

  • My Display Only Works Part of the Time and Apple Care Won't Help Me (Long)

I bought my computer at a discounted price because it was a restocked item, but was it really worth it? I'm beginning to think not. I saw that it had one stuck pixel, but saving that much money on such an expensive computer, the pixel hardly seemed like a travesty. However, I think I've discovered the real reason why the last owner gave up such a seemingly exceptional piece of hardware...
After about a month of flawless operation my "new" computer started to act a little strangely. It wouldn't always go to sleep when it was scheduled, the screen saver wouldn't always come on by itself...things that I though a simple PRAM reset, SMC reset, or disk permission repair would fix. After countless attempts at all three "fixes" I was still having problems...a few days after these problems started occuring something even more drastic happened: My computer would turn on (the little light would come on, I'd hear the fans start running and the start up tone) but the screen would remain black. I tried several PRAM and SMC resets as suggested on this forum, but the screen continued to come up black for about an hour. That's when I called Apple.
The Apple Care specialist on the phone asked me for the serial in which I had to lift the computer up to get (since I obviously couldn't read it off the screen). She suggested an SMC reset which, I explained to her, I had tried already but it hadn't worked, however, I was willing to give it another shot. Oddly (and rather annoyingly) enough it worked, and for a short amount of time I was happy...until it happened again...another call to Apple...and again...and about 3 or 4 calls to Apple Care later, they suggested that I go in to an Apple Store to have it looked at.
The Apple Specialist made an appointment with me to meet with an Apple Genius the next day at 4:30PM at a store about a mile away from my house. The next day I lugged my 24" iMac through the local mall (I'm female, 5'2", and I weigh about 108 so it wasn't too easy of a feat) to discover the apple store was CLOSED for the next few days so that they could "make the store better." I called Apple Care on my cell phone right there in the mall and asked them what was going on. Didn't they know that this Apple Store was closed? The man I was talking to said that they knew and he wasn't sure how the person I had talked to just the day before had signed me up for an appointment when he hadn't even asked for my e-mail address. It was most bizarre. This man made an appointment with me for later that same day at an Apple Store about 45 minutes away from where I live. I didn't want to go, but I'm a college student and I was a desperate for my computer to work again.
Shaking around in that box must have brought it out of it's strange seized-up state because as I brought it out for the Mac Genius to look at it turned on for him no problem. Quite a frustrating problem because it's so spontainious that it keeps making me look like either a liar or a fool. He said he'd run an 8-hour diagnostic check on it and I could pick it up the next day. So the next day I waited for their call but I got none. I called them and they said that they were still running tests and it'd be ready the next day. The day after, about an hour and a half before I had to go to work, they called me and told me my computer was ready. They said they had ran a 24-hour diagnostic and everything was working fine but they said they'd run more tests if I wanted them to. I'm a full-time college student and I need my computer for just about all of my classes, so I declined more tests and told them I'd pick it up right away. I dashed over there to pick it up and dashed back as fast as I could (and I even made it to work on time...but just barely). Later that night I found that they had accidentally left their diagnostics CD in my computer (I called them about it and they said that would like it if I would bring it back...I still haven't mailed it).
All was fine and good (well, just okay...it still had problems with its sleeping and screen-savering) with my computer until yesterday. I got that black screen again upon start up....but this time my "fixes" worked after a few tries. There were no more problems for the rest of yesterday.
However, today I came home from school and go to start up my computer and the screen turned on and I saw the little mac symbol and that little circle of bars...but then it froze. I held in the little button to force a shutdown and when I started it back up again I was greeted by my good old friend, Mr. Black Screen. Just wonderful. I tried my "fixes" but today I didn't get lucky. So while I was holding in the button to start up my computer (again) and give it another go, I held it longer than I was supposed to and the little on light began flickering. Then I heard this unpleasant tone that lasted a few seconds before stopping and treating me to the startup sound. This time the screen turned on. Yay! I go to call Apple to find out what I had just done, and I find out that my 90 days are up and unless I wanted to pay $50 for them to be puzzled by my issue once more or give them $300 for not quite 3 more years of service, I'd have to lug my computer to an Apple Store or post here to get help. Thanks a lot Apple Care.
My "new" computer cost me almost $3,000. It should work the way it's supposed to. I need it to last me no less than 6 more years, but with the problems I've had with it in the first 3 months (which seem only to be getting worse and more frequent), I don't know if I'm expecting WAY too much out of it. I've been a loyal Apple user for 13 years and out of the 5 computers I've had in that time I've never had so many problems (actually I've never had any problems, at least nothing really serious; I'd never even called Apple Care before this). I'm a fairly experienced user (I'm not a Mac Genius or anything, but I know the ropes) and I am sure this is not normal behavior for an Apple computer (or any computer of that matter).
I'm so frusterated I'm not sure what to do. What's wrong with my computer? How can I get Apple to help me? How can I get Apple to even believe me? Any advice would be greatly appreciated and thank you so much for reading my very long (and rather dramatic) story.

Thanks for reading and thanks for the advice. • Charger stops working, must unplug/"replug" cord to make it work again

I've got a MBP unibody- about 2 months old. Not happy with battery life around two hours (yes, with settings for better battery life), but now the charger's acting up!
Sitting still, working on laptop, suddenly I'll see the icon change to "using battery", even though it's been plugged in for hours. This has also happened when not working- this morning, it was in deep sleep because the battery had run all the way down overnight, even though it was plugged in.
Simply detaching/reattaching the magsafe adapter does nothing- I have to either unplug and replug the adapter from the surge protector, or detach/reattach the cord from the "brick" to get it to work again.
Anyone else seeing this? It's a 45-minute drive to an Apple Store, so I'm asking here first...

You might try resetting the SMC:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411?viewlocale=en_US
If that doesn't cure the problem, it's possible you have a bad power adaptor--it sounds like the power adaptor is not being recognized and the battery may not be getting fully charged. You might also want to look at this article on troubleshooting mag safe adaptors:

  • External display only works with Macbook open?

I have an Acer AL2623W which works fine as an additional or main screen, but a second after you close the laptop the screen goes blank and it shows an 'input not supported' error. The Macbook stays on, it just doesn't drive the monitor alone. Re-open the Macbook and both work normally!

    Hello Siôn Dafydd,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you are using an external display with your MacBook Pro and when you close the display on your MacBook Pro, the second display turns off. It sounds as though your MacBook Pro may not be connected to power while using with display closed. • Why does my G4 ibook display only work when it's partially open?

The display on my iBook G4 shows no video until I nearly close the lid. I can then see the display working but it is at an extreme angle. I'm thinking that it must be a contact problem, but cannot find any forum or troubleshooting support that address this issue. Does anyone know of a procedure to check and repair this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Randy

    Randy,
I have repaired those inverter cables. The break is usually at the hinge point and often it's the red wire that breaks. If you open up the iBook (bottom case, top case (Be very careful with the power lead, it's easy to rip the socket off the logic board. I don't even attempt to unplug it, just free up the speaker cables and the power lead (blue and white) by pulling it free from the adhesive) and the top shield. (lots of patience required here to keep from bending the shield esp. near the top left). Often I'll just leave it connected and tape it to the display. You have to tease the inverter cable out and might have to remove the display to get full access. Note carefully how the cable is routed around the hinge. I tease the silver tape apart (often you can see the break - big black burned spot) so then I solder it back together, lots of tiny shrink tubing.
When I remove the top or bottom shield I'll tape the individual screws right to the shield near where they belong. 3M blue for this. That way reassembly is a no brainer. I used to measure the screw length w/ a metric rule and that took forever.
I also use a "black stick" that I made from a #3 black nylon propeller from the hobby shop. I cut it in half and tape the cut ends w/ self fusing electrical tape. The black stick is essential to releasing the tabs that hold the case together. Don't forget to release the one inside the battery compartment as I often find that one broken off in iBooks that come in for donation.
More if you email me but I won't be back in the shop until Saturday night.

  • Display only works when 1/4 open

    Hi,
Recently I have noticed that my display wasn't working - I thought it was due to PGP encryption software that was required for work, however I was allowed to remove the PGP when I updated to 10.7.2 as it has full disk encryption.
Then I noticed - the display works - but only if the computer is at a 45 degree angle - if I open the screen past that - the display goes dark.
    Anyone?

Yes, I'm sure it's not that. Startup will be ok and then screen will go black halfway through startup. Machine boots but no video with built in screen. Hook up to external monitor and can use OSX like that but with only the external monitor..not internal display. Also no "arragement" tab under display preferences...? And like I said will boot fine under windows xp with internal macbook screen. :/
