ADC to DVI adaptor

I just bought a new Macmini, abd want to use it with my OLD monitor (the first flat panel Apple offered).  I'm told by a genius at our local Apple store that I need an ADC to DVI adaptor.  Someone on this discussion site said I need to use an adaptor with a brick.  Is this so, and where do I find one?  I googled the adaptor, and it only showed me adaptors with no brick.  Any help with this would ne appreciated.

Dear MaryAnn,
I think it makes more sense at this point to bid a fond farewell to the old monitor if it is ADC.
The problem is that Apple's ADC monitors ran power, video and USB through one cable. It's the "power" side of the equation that requires the brick; the monitor can't get power from the wall like a regular one does. The Apple genius was wrong. Those people seem good with current gear, but are commonly weak on older equipment made before they had to use underarm deodorant daily.
Original Apple adaptors are sky-high in price:
M8661LL
I recall there being third-party adapter like Dr Bott but they are also discontinued and scarce. I looked for one about two years ago and they were already around US$100.
For $100 you can get a nice flat-panel monitor and, for $150 you can get a really nice FP monitor.
I am an advocate for keeping old technology in service and out of the landfill, but ADC has to be scored as an Apple failure in the long run.
EDIT: Forgot your monitor was probably newer than the pre-1998 equipment this forum served. You may want to look through this part of the forums where older displays are discussed:
Older Displays & Monitors
to see it there are any better workabouts.

My video card has a VGA and an ADc connector. Connected my 19" monitor using VGA connector.
Got a Belkin ADC to DVI adaptor for the ADC output.
Got a DVI to HDMI cable to connect to the TV.
    Everything plugged together Ok.
On powering up the Mac, the Widescreen TV shows the grey screen with the apple symbol and the spinning wheel, this disappears and the 19" monitor comes on. This displays the desktop picture, but no icons appear and that's all that happens. Power off theMac, power off the Widescreen TV, power on the Mac and it comes up normally. The grey bootup screen appears on the 19".
So how do I get the system to recognise BOTH displays. I've played with the System Preferences, but because the system won't recognise both screens I can't switch on the mirror option.
Any thoughts on the problem welcome.

I take it that OS10.5.5 is detecting my Viewsonic VA1912w Screen connected to the VGA; but for some reason has decided that there is NO display (my HDTV via HDMI) connected to the ADC.
I've been playing with this for a day or two now. With both screens attached and powered on I power on the G4. The grey "boot up" screen with the Apple logo and spinning wheel appears on the HDTV screen, meaning the Mac has found it and is using it. While this is happening the Viewsonic is grey.
Then both screen go black, the Viewsonic goes blue, then puts up an old desktop picture, while the HDTV remains black. And that's all that happens.
I have to disconnect the HDMI cable from the HDTV, power down the HDTV & the Mac, then power on the Mac again to get it back.
So why would the Mac detect the HDTV, then decide it's not there?
I've tried adjusting the display settings and frequencies to no avail.
    Anyone?

  • ADC to DVI

I have an "old" G4 733. It supports VGA and ADC connections. My CRT is about to fail and I wanted to use a new apple cinema display. Will the new 23" cinema display work on it? I have heard about adaptors like, Belkin's ADC to DVI adaptor for the older display connection issues, but I am not usre about it working with the new displays.
    G4 733   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You need a Dr Bott Extractor II ( DVI to ADC - DVI display to Apple ADC connector), its about £25 + vat and works just fine. be careful you dont buy a scrren that is too big for your graphics card though.

  • Fromac ADC to DVI

    hi
i bought a formac ADC to DVI adaptor the other day so I can make use of my two displays.
I but my spare display has a VGA input so i bought a dvi to vga adaptor and connected this to the ADC to DVI one and thought this would be perfect
    But.........
everything on my monitor is green i can see the desktop and everything else but its a different shads of green,
I kno the DVI to VGA adaptor is in perfect working order and I kno my LCD is so Im guessing the ADC to DVI adaptor is faulty
or am I missing something and I shouldn't be using the DVI to VGA adaptor on the end of the ADC one and this is what is causing the problem??
    thanks

Yes, that's most likely the problem.

  • 23" ADC from the USA connecting to ADC to DVI to my Macbook Pro, problem???

    Hi guys,
I love my 30" display, don't get me wrong but its to big for everyday use so i use it for movies etc, i think i might buy the 23" ADC display from the USA as the exchange rate is good but if i use a UK adc to dvi adaptor, will there be too much power to the screen and damage it?
    Thanks
    Danny

I assume you are thinking of buying an older 23" display, as the newer ones have DVI?
I believe the ADC/DVI power brick converts the native voltages to those the display needs on it's ADC connection so you should be fine...always worth a call to Apple to check.
The ADC/DVI power brick might be multi-voltage/standard but I'm not at home so I can't check mine for you unfortunately.

Can I use the Belkin ADC to DVI Connector Cable to

    Yes.

Yes. The adapter just provides the digital video signals. You still need to plug in the power, USB, and FireWire (if needed) cables from the display
All the documentation seems to be restricted to G4s,
When the adapter came out the only ADC computers were G4s. They haven't updated the documentation, but it will work on a G5.

If so, am I right in assuming that I still use the Cinema Display power connector in addition to using this adaptor cable?
All the documentation seems to be restricted to G4s, and for some reason the cable doesn't seem to be carried by the online Apple Store here in the UK.

  • Where to buy a ADC to VGA adaptor

Im looking for one to pick up at a store. Does anyone know who might carry a ADC to VGA adaptor?

I'm on the same hunt. Today I decided to make use of a second monitor kicking around and rearranged my desk. Then I went to plug it in... No such luck. What's the point of this? What's wrong with two dvi ports, besides the point that adc meant another few bucks spent on accessories.
Anyway, I found one here for the cheapest price I've seen so far.
    good luck.

  • Searching adc to vga adaptor

I'm trying to connect my second Monitor port to a VGA Display and am searching for the correct adaptor.
I found solutions on the net, but rather than paying more fore shipping than the connector is worth, I'm looking for someone who has one lost in some box he could spare.
I'm ok with spending some money on this, but then more than 50€ would be over the limit.

Thanks in advance for any help provided.

You will need a ADC to DVI adapter
    <http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-F2E9142-WHT-Apple-Monitor-Adapter/dp/B000067RLH/re f=dpcp_ob_title0>
    or ADC to VGA adapter
    <http://www.amazon.com/COMPUCABLE-ADC-VGA-Adapter-Cable/dp/B000071A8Q>
ADC to VGA adapters have become very scarce. If you have to use a VGA display, you can use a DVI to VGA adapter on the computer's DVI port. You can then connect your DVI display to the ADC port with the ADC to DVI adapter. (A DVI to VGA adapter won't work connected to a ADC to DVI adapter, since the ADC to DVI adapter doesn't pass the analog video signals needed for VGA.)

  • ADC OR DVI or DVI-I?

    Hello,
Decisions, decisions, decisions!! Got a PM G4 MDD 1.25 Dual w/2MB L3 cache per processor. Undecided on what to do as far as monitor is concerned. Currently, connected to a big, heavy kahuna 19 inch sony CRT monitor. Want to get rid of it for an LCD. Should I go with ADC? or DVI? Or something new called: DVI-I? Help!
I am not looking to spend a whole lot of money for such a device, but was told to stay clear of the Apple LCD monitors compared to other companies.
Well, what does everyone have to recommend to me? ADC or DVI?

I bought a ViewSonic 22" wide aspect ration flat panel for my G4 MDD with stock Radeon 9000 vidcard. The monitor has both VGA and DVI ports and came with a cable for each. The R900 has one DVI and one ADC port.
I've tried both VGA and DVI and found I get a better selections of usable resolutions with the monitor's VGA port and cable (using the DVI-to-VGA adaptor that came with the MDD). Although the native res for the monitor is 1680x1050, I run it at 1440x900 (VGA) in deference to my aging eyeballs. If I use the monitor's DVI port and cable, only 1680x1050 is supported without distortion. Every other res offered in DVI mode looks stretched even with only the Finder running.

  • Mini dvi to hdmi adaptor vs. mini dvi to dvi adaptor

Do the mini dvi to hdmi adaptor works? I notice a lot of them for sell on ebay, but none at apple store. Does apple not recommend this setup? Most of the forums address the mini dvi to dvi adaptor to dvi to hdmi cable set up. I can not find anything that clearly says you can use the mini dvi to hdmi adaptor and just connect a regular hdmi cable to get video from a macbook to tv.
BTW My LG tv model 42PC3D (link to manuel below) says that the HDMI cable supports computer connection.
    http://us.lgservice.com/index_b2c.jsp

There are reports here that non Apple mini DVI-->whatever cables don't work correctly connect to a MB. That said, if the cable is cheap enough, give it a shot. I just looked at the mini DVI-->HDMI cables on eBay and they all look "short" and for most installation, will require a longer HDMI-->HDMI cable.
So, unless the price of a DVI-->HDMI cable is a lot more than an HDMI-->HDMI cable, why not go with the standard Apple mini DVI-->HDMI cable? However, if you already have the latter, I can understand why you might not want to buy the former cable.

  • ADC to DVI and DVI to VGA on my G5

I have a G5 with an ATI 9600 video card that has both DVI and ADC outputs.  I cannot find am ADC to VGA adapter, but I was wondering if I could use and ADC to DVI adapter and then connect that to a DVI to VGA adapter and use a 2nd VGA monitor on my Mac.  Has anhyone tried this?
    Thanks!

ADC to DVI-D adapters pass digital, not analog. There is no way for DVI to VGA to receive analog from the ADC port.

  • 17" MacBook Pro to 30" HD Display issue using Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adaptor.

Just replaced the Western Digital hard drive on my MacBook Pro with a SSD now running Lion 10.8.2, (updating from Snow Leopard latest version).
I have a 30" HD Apple display monitor and very much love using it.
    The issue.
The MacBook Pro will only allow the 30" Monitor to display its top resolution when the unit is closed, when it is open it shows either 2 screens or mirrored screens depending upon the settings, but not at the top resolution capable by the monitor.
Now, when I was using Snow Leopard on the previos hard drive, I could close the MacBook Pro and put the computer to sleep also putting the 30" Monitor to sleep, I could then wake the computer while it was closed with my external keyboard and the screen would wake showing the FULL resolution possible on the 30" Monitor.
Then I could open the lid of the MacBook Pro and the screen would stay black allowing ONLY the 30" HD Monitor to be used effectively as a desktop computer, without the complication or need to display 2 screens or mirrored screens but most importantly the fans wouldn't need to work overtime due to the MacBook Pro being closed cutting off vital ventilation through the 2 air ducts to the left and right of the keyboard.
For some reason I cannot do this with Mountain Lion, the compluter needs to be closed in order for the 30" Monitor to display top resolution, and the fans are working overtime and the unit is getting really hot.
My concern is that the MacBook Pro will overheat, the screen will be damaged as the MacBook does get exceptionally hot when running design and audio packages, even Adobe Flash sets the fans off, and lastly the computers speakers are muffled which is more of a moo point.
If anyone could shed some light or offer a solution I would be most appreciative.
    My specs:
MacBook Pro 17" Mid 2009 3.06 Intel Core Duo, 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512 MB, OS X 10.8.2 - connecting to an Apple 30" HD monitor with a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adaptor.

Thanks for your quick reply! I want to think I'm not technically challenged, but... are you saying to go from minidisplay on macbook directly to the firewire in the back of the monitor? Or should I try to attach it to that ugly bunch of cables at the end of the monitor cable (dvi, usb, firewire and the power adapter thingy)? Either way, it seems like I might need yet another cable? Like Mini-display to... ?
I feel like my mother asking these questions... At any rate, when I called the guy at apple support last time he acted like it was a Miracle that I had anything on my cinema display at all if I had a minidisplay cable plugged into the thunderbolt port. He said that didn't work (but obviously it did, at least a little) I DID get a picture, it just wouldn't display at the 2560x1600 resolution. More like 1680xsomething. fuzzy and big. I want my pretty picture back.
Thanks so much for your help.

  • "miniDVI-DVI adaptor" + "DVI to VGA cable" can't detect LCD TV

    Hi,
I just bought a "miniDVI-to-DVI" adapter, and then a DVI-to-VGA male-to-male cable to connect my MacBook to Viewsonic 19" monitor but my MacBook didn't detect the 19" monitor. (This 19" monitor has only VGA but no DVI input!)I tried it on my friend's 32" LCD TV but it couldn't work too.
Then I tried to connect my MacBook by using "miniDVI-DVI" adaptor + "DVI-DVI male to male" cable to DVI socket of my frind's 32" LCD TV. It worked! So I think it's not the problem of the "miniDVI-DVI" adaptor.
I worried that it's the problem of the "DVI-to-VGA" cable so I went to the shop to exchange another new "DVI-to-VGA" cable. But my MacBook still couldn't detect all these 2 monitors via VGA socket.
Can anybody help me? Please advise! Thanks!

    Hi,
    Thanks for your response.
The shopman told me that "miniDVI-VGA" adaptor was out of stock, only "miniDVI-DVI" adaptor was available yesterday. At that time I thought I had to buy a connecting cable also (no matter it's VGA-VGA or DVI-VGA cable).
Since my friend has a DVI-DVI cable, if I buy this "miniDVI-to-DVI" adapter I may share my MacBook with his 32" TV too. So I bought these adaptor & cable.
